  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the performance of solar thermal system according to regional weather conditions and feedwater temperature. The performance analysis of the system was carried out for the annual and winter periods in terms of solar fraction, collector efficiency and it's optimal degree. The system is simulated using TRNSYS program for 6 cities, Seoul, Incheon, Gangneung, Mokpo, Gwangju, and Ulsan. Simulation results prove that the solar fraction of the system varies greatly from region to region, depending on weather conditions and feedwater temperatures. Monthly average solar fraction for winter season from November to February, a time when heat energy is most required, indicated that the highest is 73.6% in Gangnueng and the lowest is 56.9% in Seoul. This is about 30% relative difference between the two cities. On the other hand, the collector efficiency of the system for all six cities was analyzed in the range between 40% and 42%, indicating small difference compare to the solar fraction. The annual average solar fraction is rated the highest at 40 collector degree, while monthly average solar fraction during winter season is rated at 60 degree.

  • A computer code for an optimum design of solar space and domestic hot water heating system has been developed. The f-chart method developed by S.A. Klein et al. has been incorporated in the present computer code. The main conclusions obtained from the present work may be summarized as follows: (1) In Seoul area, about 46% of the total heating load can be obtained from the solar collectors whose total surface area is about one-third of the total heating floor area. (2) In Pusan area, total area of solar collectors should be about half of the total heating floor area in order to obtain an equivalent solar fraction of Seoul. (3) In cheju area, on the other hand, only about 42% of the total heating floor area of solar collectors is needed to get the same solar fraction as in Seoul and Pusan. (4) In order to get the first 50% solar fraction, only about 10-14 collectors ($4'{\times}8'$ collectors) are required, whereas about 48 collectors are needed to obtain the solar fraction of 100%. That is, roughly 3.5-4.5 times greater number of collectors are required to increase the solar fraction from 50% to 100%. Therefore, it can be concluded that it is relatively inefficient and less economical to build a solar system whose solar fraction exceeds more than 50%.

  • In this paper, performances of solar hot water supply systems are parametrically analyzed with the variations of solar collector area, slope of collector and volume of storage. All simulations are conducted by using TRNSYS computer program. Average solar fractions, collector efficiencies and temperatures of storage are investigated monthly as well as annually. For system analysis, the maximum value of monthly average solar fractions has a limitation of 90 percent. As a result, the designed solar thermal system with $6m^2$ collector area, $50^{\circ}$ slope and $0.36m^2$ storage volume could provide almost an annual average solar fraction of 72 percent. By increasing the storage volume to $0.42m^2$, the annual solar fraction of system increases up to 73 percent.

  • This study aims to analyze the performance of solar thermal system with heat pump for domestic hot water and heat supply. There are four types of system. Systems are categorized based on the existence of a heat pump and the ways of controlling the working fluid circulating from the collector. Working fluid is controlled by either temperature level (categorized as system 1 and 2) or sequential flow (system 3 and 4). Heat balance of the system, the solar fraction, hot water and heating supply rates, and performance of heat pump are analyzed using TRNSYS and TESS component programs. Technical specifications of the main facilities are as follow; the area of the collector to $25m^2$, the volumes of the main tank and the buffer tank to $0.5m^3$ and $0.8m^3$, respectively. Heating capacity of the heat pump in the heating mode is set to 30,000 kJ / hr. Hot water supply set 65 liters per person each day, total heat transfer coefficient of the building to 1,500 kJ / kg.K. Indoor temperature is kept steadily around $22^{\circ}C$. The results are as follows; 6 months average solar fraction of system 1 turns out to be 39%, which is 6.7% higher than system 2 without the heat pump, indicating a 25% increase of solar fraction compared to that of system 2. In addition, the solar fraction of system 1 is 2% higher than that of system 3. Hot water and heating supply rate of system 1 are 93% and 35%, respectively. Considering the heat balance of the system, higher heat efficiency, and solar fraction, as whole, it can be concluded that system 1 is the most suitable system for hot water and heat supply.

  • This study is on the availability of solar thermal energy in Korean high-rise apartment complex depending on the installation type of solar collectors to roof or facade of building. Firstly, solar access evaluation on the roof and the facade of apartment buildings was carried out. The total thermal load of each apartment unit and building was investigated and matched with the energy which was produced by solar thermal systems on the facade. The considered layout patterns of apartment buildings were '一type', 'alternative 一type', 'ㄱtype' and 'ㅁtype' and that was analyzed in prior studies. Extensive dynamic hourly energy simulations with the solar thermal system were Performed with the TRNSYS of SEL. We assumed that the apartment complex is composed of 9 buildings and located in Daejeon. The collectors are the heat-pip evacuated tube collectors and the number of collectors are 45 tubes We assumed that the collectors are installed on the balcony of each unit and the angle of incilnation is $90^{\circ}$. As a result, the supply amount of solar thermal systems is about 4,850,086kJ/hr and the solar fraction is about 66%. The solar fraction according to each azimuth is about 66% on the south, 62% on the south-east $30^{\circ}$ and 56% on the south-east $60^{\circ}$. So, we quantitatively got a line on the optimal azimuth for installing the solar thermal systems. The solar fraction has differences from 5% to 15% of each floor, 6th, 12th and 20th and those tendencies are same in analyzed each 4 types of the apartment complexes.

  • This paper is to simulate a solar hot water heating system used in a medium-scale office building using the dynamic simulation. This study is focused chiefly on the annual variation of energy performance, the solar fraction with respect to the difference of hot water load temperature. For this purpose the simple model of a solar hot water heating system has been considered with TRNSYS program and the simulations were performed with the weather data in Seoul, Korea. The share ratio of solar hot water system of the summer season appeared higher than the winter season because that the decrease of the domestic hot water load was far despite the relative decrease of the solar radiation. As the temperature was lower from $60^{\circ}C$ to $50^{\circ}C$, the solar fraction increases 8.1 percent due to 20-percent decrease of annual hot water load.

  • The performance of a solar water heater incorporating evacuated tubes was evaluated using a transient simulation program, TRNSYS. Simulations were performed for $60^{\circ}C$ of hot water load temperature and for 280 liter of daily hot water volumes and three 400 liter of storage tank volumes. Three patterns of daily hot water consumption profile were used in the present study (morning, lunch and evening). The results show that the increase in solar fraction depends on the load profile, as well as the collector efficiency coefficient. Hot water draw profile has a large effect on the performance of the SDHWS, the morning load profile has the highest solar fraction. The annual solar fraction of the system, at the weather conditions of Jinju is approximately 84% at lunch load pattern, the 280 kg of load volume, 400 kg of tank volume and the $60^{\circ}C$ of load temperature.

  • Experimental study on the operating characteristics of a solar hybrid heat pump system according to indoor setting temperature were carried out during spring and winter season. The system was consisted of a concentric evacuated tube solar collector, heat medium tank, heat storage tank, and heat pump. As a result, the heating load was increased by 21.1% when the indoor setting temperature rose by 2oC for the same ambient temperature. Besides, the spring season had good outdoor conditions compared to the winter season, therefore the heating load was reduced and heat gain by collector increased, relatively. In case of the winter season, the solar fraction was shown less than 10% because the heat losses of system and space increased considerably. The solar fraction decreased significantly as the indoor setting temperature increased.
