The behaviors of layers developed in a solar pond were studied by experimental and analytical methods. An experimental solar pond heated from below was constructed and operated at the net heat fluxes of 110 and 160W/m$^{2}$ and at the initial salt concentration gradients of 18.2, 27.3 and 36.4%/m. The thicknesses, growth rates, temperature and salt concentration in the top and the bottom mixed layers, the diffusive layer and the upper and the lower interfacial boundary layers were measured. The shadowgraph technique was used in order to observe all layer formation and an electroconductivity-temperature probe consisting of four electrodes was fabricated and used in measuring the salt concentration. Based on the experimental results, a model for the solar pond was developed and the governing equation and the assumptions were established. The governing equations were solved by the numerical method. The calculated results obtained from the analysis were compared with the experimental results.
This study was accomplished to get the foundation design data of VMD(Vacuum Membrane Distillation) system for Solar Thermal VMD plant. VMD experiment was designed to evaluate thermal performance of VMD using PVDF(polyvinylidene fluoride) hollow fiber hydrophobic membranes. The total membrane surface area in a VMD module is $5.3m^2$. Experimental equipments to evaluate VMD system consists of various parts such as VMD module, heat exchanger, heater, storage tank, pump, flow meter, micro filter. The experimental conditions to evaluate VMD module were salt concentration, temperature, flow rate of feed sea water. Salt concentration of feed water were used by aqueous NaCl solutions of 25g/l, 35g/l and 45g/l concentration. As a result, increase in permeate flux of VMD module is due to the increasing feed water temperature and feed water flow rate. Also, decrease in permeate flux of VMD module is due to increasing salinity of feed water. VMD module required about 590 kWh/day of heating energy to produce $1m^3/day$ of fresh water.

Typical trouble patterns in solar thermal systems include working fluid leakage and freezing other than breakdown of pump. A fluid sensor for measuring electric resistance of fluid was developed and installed at the top of the collector piping in order to check the fault of solar system. Working fluid level in the pipe was determined by measuring electric resistance from a fluid sensor. On the base of this, it was confirmed that the fluid sensor diagnoses leakage of fluid. Electric resistance of propylene glycol aqueous solution was measured in the range of $0{\sim}70^{\circ}C$ and 0~40% of concentration. The response surface analysis was performed by using a central composite design, and the regression equation was derived from the relationship between electric resistance, temperature, and concentration. Through the experiment in a real solar system, we can estimate a concentration of working fluid when a pump is not operating and predict a possibility of freezing. Finally, an effective algorithm for trouble shooting was proposed to operate and maintain the solar system.
The concentrating solar module with high concentration ratio(320)has been studied.in this paper. The solar module was composed of the EMVJ solar cell, (Fresnel Lens-DCPC)concentrator and heat sink, and was measured by using the PASTF system. The experimental result and the result analysis for the individual item of the module were as f ollows; (1) The conversion efficiency of the module was 8.3%. (2) The optical efficiency of the concentrator was 46.5% (DCPC; 84.8%, Fresnel Lens; 54.8%). (3) The thermal loss of the solar cell was 4.9%. And methods for the further improvement of the concentrating solar module efficiency have been suggested.
The present solar energy concentrator is a 2-dimensional system that incorporates with a tubular absorber. A new design theory is developed on the basis of the generalized edge-ray principle. The result shows the increase of concentration ratio for the same acceptance angle as the basic CPC by a factor of $C_{new}=C_{cpc}\{1+(d/{\pi}r)\;sin^2{\theta}_c\}$. For example, if ${\theta}_c=30^{\circ}$, the new design offers the concentration of $2.0{\sim}2.72$, whereas $C_{cpc}=2$. The new system also provide a thin and light-weight design.
HCPV(High Concentrated PV) systems have well known for CPV market all over the world. Low concentration type silicon based modules have been introduced in the market. But low cost of standard flat silicon modules made them useless nowadays. High cost of compound semiconductor solar cell reduced cost effective cpv module production than that of recently silicon solar cell. In order to overcome increasing cost of CPV module, we study middle concentration type fresnel lens simulation using concentrated type silicon based solar cell. Linear type fresnel lens made production of CPV module without secondary optics such as light pipe or light tunnel. This type of fresnel lens design makes more cost effective solution for cpv niche market.
This study was conducted to investigate the relation between ozone concentration and the affecting factors in Seosan City of Korea from Jan. 2002 to Dec. 2002. We analyzed the air pollutants such as NO$_2$, PM$_{10} $,SO$_2$, CO and the meteorological factors including solar radiation, air temperature, wind speed and relative humidity. The analytical data were taken statistics by SPSS method. The results were as follows: The seasonal average concentration of ozone were detected 35.0 ppb in Spring, 25.4 ppb in Summer, 23.5 ppb in Autumn and 21.4 ppb in Winter. So the difference of concentrations showed significantly in statistics. The hourly ozone concentration in a day was increased at 7-9 AM, peaked at 3-4 PM. The correlation coefficients was negative to ozone concentration and NO$_2$, SO$_2$, CO, relative humidity, but positive to solar radiation, air temperature, wind speed. With stepwise multiple regression analysis on the 8 factors such as NO$ _2$, PMSO$_{10}$,SO$_2$, CO, solar radiation, air temperature, wind speed and relative humidity, the seasonal primary factors were air temperature in spring, relative humidity in summer and solar radiation in autumn and winter. The above results suggest that ozone is the secondary pollutant by photochemical reaction as the concentration of ozone was increased with the raise of solar radiation.
The artificial increase in the solar intensity incident on solar cells using lenses or mirrors can allow solar cells to generate equivalent power with a lower cost. In application areas of Fresnel lenses as solar concentrators, several variations of design were devised and tested. Some PV systems still use commercially available flat Fresnel lenses as concentrators. In this study, we designed and optimized flat Fresnel lens and the 'light pipe' to develop 500X concentrated solar PV system. We performed rigorous ray tracing simulation of the flat Fresnel lens and light-pipe. The light-pipe can play imporatant roles of redistributing solar energy at the solar cell and increase the mechanical tolerance so that it can increase the lifetime of the high-concentration solar PV system and decrease the cost of manufacturing. To investigate the sensitivity of the solar power generated by the concentrated solar PV according to the performance of lens and light pipe, we performed raytracing and executed a simulation of electrical performance of the solar cell when it is exposed to the non-uniform illumination. We could conclude that we can generate 95 % or more energy compared with the energy that can be generated by perfectly uniform illumination once the total energy is given the same.
The artificial increase in the solar intensity incident on solar cells using lenses or mirrors can allow solar cells to generate equivalent power with a lower cost. There are two types of concentration optics for solar energy conversion. One is to use mirrors, and the other is to use Fresnel lenses. The gains that can be achieved with a Fresnel lens or a parabolic mirror are compared. The result showed the gains are comparable and the two configurations were developed competitively. In application areas of Fresnel lenses as solar concentrators, several variations of design were devised and tested. Some PV systems still use commercially available flat Fresnel lenses as concentrators. A convex linear Fresnel lens to improve the concentration ratio and the efficiency is devised and flat linear Fresnel lens in thermal energy collection is utilized. In this study, we designed and optimized flat Fresnel lens and the 'light pipe' to develop 500X concentrated solar PV system. In the process, we compare the transmission efficiencies according to groove types. We performed rigorous ray tracing simulation of the flat Fresnel lenses. The computer aided simulation showed the 'grooves in case' has the better efficiency than that of 'grooves out case'. Based on the ray-trace results we designed and manufactured sample Fresnel lenses. The optical performance were measured and compared with ray-trace results. Finally, the optical efficiency was measured to be above 75%. All the design and manufacturing were performed based on that InGaP/InGaAs/Ge triple junction solar cell is used to convert the photon energy to electrical power. Field test will be made and analyzed in the near future.
A numerical analysis was conducted to predict the heat transfer characteristics of a solar receiver which is subject to very high heat fluxes and temperatures for solar thermal applications. The concentration ratio of the solar receiver ranges 1000 and the concentrated heat is required to be transported to a certain distance for specific applications. This study deals with a solar receiver according to internal geometry variation incorporating high-temperature heat pipe. The isothermal characteristics in the receiver section is of major concern. The diameter of the solar thermal receiver was 120 mm and the length was 400 mm and the angle of receiver end wall set $90^{\circ},\;60^{\circ},\;45^{\circ},\;30^{\circ}$. And the diameter of the heat pipe was 12.7 mm, 48 axial channels of the same dimensions were attached to the outer wall of the receiver with even spacing in the circumferential direction. The channels are changed to high-temperature sodium heat pipes. Commercial softwares were employed to deal with the radiative heat transfer inside the receiver cavity and the convection heat transfer along the channels. The numerical results are compared and analyzed from the view point of high-temperature solar receiver.
