  • Since the atmospheric clearness index is main factor for evaluating global-dimming of atmosphere environment, it is necessary to estimate its characteristics all over the major cities in Korea. We have begun collecting clearness index data since 1982 at 16 different cities and considerable effort has been made for constructing a standard value from measured data at each city. The new clearness data for global-dimming analysis will be extensively used by evaluating atmospheric environment as well as by solar PV application system designer or users. From the results, we can conclude that 1) Yearly mean 61.9% of the atmospheric clearness index was evaluated for clear day all over 2) A significant difference of atmospheric clearness index is observed between 1982-1989 and 1990-1997, 1998-2005 through 16 different cities in Korea.

  • Energy self-reliance is important for economic growth and development for any nation. An energy self-reliance technological analysis for Kampala the capital city of Uganda is presented. Three renewable energy sources: Municipal Solid Waste (MSW), solar and wind are assessed for the period of 2014 to 2030. Annual MSW generation will increase from $6.2{\times}10^5$ tons in 2014 to $8.5{\times}10^5$ and $1.14{\times}10^6$ tons by 2030 at 2% and 3.9% population growth respectively. MSW energy recovery yield varies from 136.7 GWh (2014, 65% collection) to 387.9 GWh (2030, 100% collection). MSW can at best contribute 2.1% and 1.6% to total Kampala energy demands for 2014 and 2030 respectively. Wind contribution is 5.6% and 2.3% in those respective years. To meet Kampala energy demands through solar, 26.6% of Kampala area and 2.4 times her size is required for panel installation in 2014 and 2030 respectively. This study concludes that improving renewable energy production may not necessarily translate into energy self-reliant Kampala City based on current and predicted conditions on a business as usual energy utilization situation. More studies should be done to integrate improvement in renewable energy production with improvement in efficiency in energy utilization.

  • There are the stirring test and drain test in the daily performance test to determine the thermal performance of a domestic solar hot water system. The drain test is a test that measures the discharge heating rate while drain the hot water from the top of the storage tank and supply the city water to the bottom of the tank. From the perspective of the user, this drain test is more effective than the stirring test. In this study, the thermal performance were compared through the drain test for a passive type and an active type domestic solar hot water systems consisting of the same storage tank and collectors. At this point, a passive type was used the horizontal storage tanks, and an active type was used vertical storage tank. In the drain test, when the hot water drained up to the reference hot water temperature, an active type which have vertical storage tank represents excellent daily performance than a passive type which have horizontal storage tank regardless of weather conditions. The reason for this is because the vertical storage tank is advantageous to thermal stratification in the tank. After the drain test, the residual heat for the horizontal storage tank was much more than the vertical storage tank, but in the next day the amount of discharged heat were less than the those of vertical storage tank neither. Thus, the solar water heating system which have horizontal storage tank should be adopted preheating control method rather than separate using control method when connected with auxiliary heat source device.

  • Steam reforming of methane in the high temperature solar chemical reactor bas advantage in its heating method. Using concentrated solar energy as a heating source of the reforming reaction can reduce the $CO_2$ emission by 20% compared to hydrocarbon fuel. In this paper, the simulation result of methane-steam reforming on a high temperature solar chemical reactor(SCR) using Fluent 6.3.26 is presented. The high temperature SCR is designed for the Inha Dish-1, a Dish type solar concentrator installed in Songdo city. Basic SCR performance factors are referred to the former researches of the same laboratory. Inside the SCR porous metal is used for a receiver/reactor. The porous metal is carved like a dome shape on the incident side to increase the heat transfer. Also, ring-disc set of baffle is inserted in the porous metal region to increase the path length. Numerical and physical models are also used from the former researches. Methane and steam is mixed with the same mole fraction and injected into the SCR. The simulation is performed for a various inlet mass flow rate of the methane-steam mixture gas. The result shows that the average reactor temperature and the conversion rate change appreciably by the inlet mass flow rate of 0.0005 kg/s.

  • The value of Photovoltaic as an independent power supply is small, but the city's carbon emissions reduction and for the reduction of fossil fuel use distributed power is the power source to a very high value. However, according to the weather conditions for solar power generation by power fluctuations because of the size distribution to be effective, the big swing for effectively controlling real-time monitoring should be made. But that depends on solar power generation solar radiation forecasts from the National Weather Service does not need to predict it, and this study, the diffuse sky radiation in the history of the solar radiation in the darkness of the clouds, thick and weather forecasts can be inferred from the atmospheric transmittance to announce this value is calculated to represent each weather forecast solar radiation and solar radiation predicted by substituting the expression And the measured solar radiation and CRM (Cloud Cover Radiation Model) technique with an expression of Kasten and Czeplak irradiation when compared to the calculated predictions were verified.

  • For a conventional natural-circulation type solar water heater, the pressure head is limited by the height between the storage tank and hot water tap. Therefore, it is difficult to provide sufficient hot water flow rate for general usage. This study deals with a design modification of the storage tank to utilize the tap-water pressure to increase hot-water supply Based on fluid dynamic and heat transfer theories, a series of modeling and simulation is conducted to achieve practical design requirements. An experimental setup is built and tested and the results are compared with theoretical simulation model. The storage tank capacity is 240 l and the outer diameter of piping was 15 mm. Number of tube turns tested are 5, 10, and 15. Starting with initial storage tank temperature of $80^{\circ}C$, the temperature variation of the supply hot water is investigated against time, while maintaining minimum flow rate of 10 1/min. Typical results show that the hot water supply of minimum $30^{\circ}C$ can be maintained for 34 min with tap-water supply pressure of 2.5 atm, The relative errors between modeling and experiments coincide well within 10% in most cases.

  • The purpose of this study is to address the progress of the heat island phenomenon and the scheme to decrease in heat island phenomenon through analysis of micro-climates according to land use and make a plan to construct wind ways. The result is: 1) Analysis of temperature and humidity at 6 spots for 24 hours showed that heat island phenomenon was considerably intense around center road of Gwangju and can be mild through making lakes and green zones. 2) Analysis of the direction and velocity of the wind at 2 spots for 24 hours showed that the direction of the wind at the center of Gwangju was SSW(South-South-West) and average velocity of the it was $1.2{\sim}1.5\;m/s$. To make the inflow of the low-temperature air current from Mt. Mudeung into the city through Gwangju river, efficient management of Gwangju riverside parks should be considered for Gwangju river itself to be wind way. 3) Analysis of mobile temperature measurement on 3 courses for 24 hours showed that the low-temperature air current of Mt. Mudeung and a micro-climate of Gwangju river can lighten thermal storage phenomena of the city in that the temperature was lowest at Gwangju riverside. These outcome is from a day term measurement. So, to figure out accurate condition of heat island phenomenon in Gwangju City, it is needed to have long term measurements and accumulation of those information.

  • Solar energy is one of the most abundant renewable energy sources on Earth but there are restrictions on the use of solar thermal energy due to the time-discrepancy between the solar-rich season and heating demand. In Europe and Canada, a seasonal solar thermal energy storage (SSTES), which stores the abundant solar heat in the summer and uses the heat for the winter heating load, is used. Recently, SSTES has been introduced in Korea and empirical studies are actively underway. In this study, a $2,000m^2$ flat plate type solar collector and $20,000m^2$ of borehole thermal energy storage (BTES) were studied for a greenhouse in Hwaseong City, which has a heating load of 2,164 GJ/year. To predict the dynamic performance of the system over time, it was simulated using the TRNSYS 18 program, and the solar fraction of the system with the control conditions was investigated. As a result, the solar BTES system proposed in this study showed an average solar fraction of approximately 60% for 5 years when differential temperature control was applied to both collecting solar thermal energy and discharging BTES. The proposed system simplified the configuration and control method of the solar BTES system and secured its performance.
