In order to properly evaluate the spatio-temporal variations of groundwater flow, the data obtained in field experiments should be corroborated into numerical simulations. Particle tracking method is a simple simulation tool often employed in groundwater simulation to predict groundwater flow paths or solute transport paths. Particle tracking simulations visually show overall the particle flow path along the entire aquifer, but no previous simulation studies has yet described the parameter values at grid nodes around the particle path. Therefore, in this study, a new technical approach was proposed that enables acquisition of parameters associated with particle transport in grid nodes distributed in the center of the particle path in groundwater. Since the particle tracking path is commonly referred to as streamline, the algorithm and codes developed in this works designated streamline analysis method. The streamline analysis method can be applied in two-dimensional and three-dimensional finite element or finite difference grid networks, and can be utilized not only in the groundwater field but also in all fields that perform numerical modeling.

Feasibility of electrokinetic(EK)-Fenton process and Ozone chemical oxidation were investigated for tile removal of organic contaminants and heavy metals from the contaminated soil. In EK-Fenton process, accumulated electroosmotic flow(EOF) was 80 L for 26 days. Removal efficiency of TPH, As, and Ni were 61%, 36%, and 47%, respectively. The concentration of As was high near the anode due to the transport of anionic As toward the anode, while the concentration of Ni was high near the cathode by the movement of cationic Ni to the cathode. Field scale application of in-situ ozonation was carried out for removal of TPH in 3-D test cell (3 m$\times$2 m$\times$2 m). After 25 days of ozone injection, more than 80% of removal rate was observed through the test cell.

This study is intended as an investigation of the EK remediation characteristics of natural soil with treatment time under unsaturated conditions. EK tests are performed under the voltage gradient of 1V/cm, the degree of saturation of 82.8%, and the installing of cation exchange membrane. It was found from the results that the acid front is initially transported at 0.75cm/day and then continuously degreased until the transport velocity of the acid front is balanced to the velocity of the base front. The residual lead concentration indicated the maximum value at the treatment time of lOdays, then the increasing of treatment time largely decreases the concentration within the sample though electromigration than electroosmosis.
This study investigates reducing characteristics for the spreading of dredged soil and the diffusion of contaminant by silt protector curtain through three dimensional numerical experiment. The numerical medel is modified by combining the sediment transport characteristics for cohesive sediment into the previously developed model. Several numerical experiments have been given in order to investigate the reducing effect of silt protector using two dimensional numerical channel model under various parameters such as upstream flow velocity, depth of silt curtain and the position of dumped materials. Through the evaluation of several simulation results, we knew that the careful design has to be given in the determination of depth and position of silt protector.

Interrill erosion by the rainfall is divided into a detachment of soil particles by raindrop splash when raindrops having kinetic energy strike on the surface soil and a sediment transport by sheet flow of surface runoff. Rainfall kinetic energy is widely used as an indicator expressing the potential ability to separate the soil particles from soil mass. In this study, the soil erosion experiments of rainfall simulation were operated to evaluate the effects of rainfall kinetic energy on interrill erosion as using the strip cover to control raindrop impact. The kinetic energy from rainfall simulator was 0.58 times to that of natural rainfall. Surface runoff and subsurface runoff increased and decreased respectively with increase of rainfall intensity. Surface runoff discharge from plots of non-cover was 1.82 times more than that from plots with cover. The rainfall kinetic energy influenced on the starting time of surface and subsurface runoff. Soil erosion quantity greatly varied according to existence of the surface cover that can intercept rainfall energy. Sediment yields by the interaction between raindrop splash and sheet flow increased 3.6~5.9 times and the increase rates of those decreased with rainfall intensity. As a results from analysis of relationship between stream power and sediment yields, rainfall kinetic energy increased the transport capacity according to increase of surface runoff as well as the detachment of soil particles by raindrop splash.

In this study, the fly ash was employed as a possible alternative to the bentonite for its high sorption capacity against cationic heavy metal. To consider the constituents of barrier possibly used, the specimens were mixed with different material contents (fly ash : weathered soil : bentonite), then sorption test was performed. Also the specimens were molded on the wet side of optimum moisture contents like mixing ratio of sorption test and their hydraulic conductivities were measured in flexible-wall permeameters. And to confirm the effect of dissolved cations, the hydraulic conductivity tests were repeated by converting the permeant liquids from water to $Cd^{2+}$ solution. Finally, the Cd-concentration at the effluent was analyzed for 500hrs to compare the effectiveness of each specimen in contaminant retardation. Test results showed that the more the ratio of fly ash increase, the more Kd value increase, and the hydraulic conductivity of weathered soil/bentonite (95:5) mixture was the lowest $(2.9*10^{-8}cm/sec)$, and specimens made of fly ash and fly ash/weathered soil mixtures showed similar hydraulic conductivity. Although the permeant liquid was changed from water to $Cd^{2+}$ solution, the hydraulic conductivity of all specimens except for weathered soil maintained similarly like before. Consequently, the initial breakthrough point of Cd in weathered soil specimen was observed at about 5hrs after the test started while that of fly ash specimens was not observed during the whole test period of 500hrs. The results implied that fly ash had a sufficient retardation capacity against contaminant transport possibly by its high sorption capacity although it showed little effect on the reduction of hydraulic conductivity. Based on the test results, it could be concluded that the fly ash can be possibly used as a suitable barrier material in containment system to attenuate the contaminant transport for its high retardation capacity and for the low cost.

A deterministic conceptual erosion model which simulates detachment, entrainment, transport and deposition of eroded soil particles by rainfall impact and flowing water is presented. Both upland and channel phases of sediment yield are incorporated into the erosion model. The algorithms for the soil erosion and sedimentation processes including land and crop management effects are taken from the literature and then solved using a digital computer. The erosion model is used in conjunction with the modified Kentucky Watershed Model which simulates the hydrologic characteristics from watershed data. The two models are linked together by using the appropriate computer code. Calibrations for both the watershed and erosion model parameters are made by comparing the simulated results with actual field measurements in the Four Mile Creek watershed near Traer, Iowa using 1976 and 1977 water year data. Two water years, 1970 and 1978 are used as test years for model verification. There is good agreement between the mean daily simulated and recorded streamflow and between the simulated and recorded suspended sediment load except few partial differences. The following conclusions were drawn from the results after testing the watershed and erosion model. 1. The watershed and erosion model is a deterministic lumped parameter model, and is capable of simulating the daily mean streamflow and suspended sediment load within a 20 percent error, when the correct watershed and erosion parameters are supplied. 2. It is found that soil erosion is sensitive to errors in simulation of occurrence and intensity of precipitation and of overland flow. Therefore, representative precipitation data and a watershed model which provides an accurate simulation of soil moisture and resulting overland flow are essential for the accurate simulation of soil erosion and subsequent sediment transport prediction. 3. Erroneous prediction of snowmelt in terms of time and magnitute in conjunction with The frozen ground could be the reason for the poor simulation of streamflow as well as sediment yield in the snowmelt period. More elaborate and accurate snowmelt submodels will greatly improve accuracy. 4. Poor simulation results can be attributed to deficiencies in erosion model and to errors in the observed data such as the recorded daily streamflow and the sediment concentration. 5. Crop management and tillage operations are two major factors that have a great effect on soil erosion simulation. The erosion model attempts to evaluate the impact of crop management and tillage effects on sediment production. These effects on sediment yield appear to be somewhat equivalent to the effect of overland flow. 6. Application and testing of the watershed and erosion model on watersheds in a variety of regions with different soils and meteorological characteristics may be recommended to verify its general applicability and to detact the deficiencies of the model. Futhermore, by further modification and expansion with additional data, the watershed and erosion model developed through this study can be used as a planning tool for watershed management and for solving agricultural non-point pollution problems.

The mechanism of soil-geotextile system has been studied among researchers since the application of geotextile as a replacement of graded granular filters is rapidly growing. The interaction of soils with geotextile is rather complicated so that its design criteria are mostly based on empiricism. Hence, it is essential to study the characteristics of fine particles transport into geotextile induced by the groundwater flow In this study, the permeability reduction in the soil-filter system due to clogging phenomenon is evaluated. An extensive research program is performed using two typical weathered residual soils which are sampled at Shinnae-dong and Poi-dong area in Seoul. Two separate simulation tests with weathered residual soil are peformed: the one is the filtration test(cross-plane flow test): and the other is the drainage test(in-plane flow test). Needle punched non-woven geotextiles are selected since it is often used as a drainage material in the field. The compatibility of the soil-filter system is investigated with emphasis on the clogging phenomenon. The hydraulic behaviour of the soil-filter system is evaluated by changing several testing conditions.
During the electrokinetic remediation, direct current applied to a soil-water-electrolyte system derives the variations of fluid transport phenomena in soil-water system and soil-water interface characteristics. Therefore, these variations affect the electrokinetic reaction. In this study, lab-scale electrokinetic remediation tests were performed to characterize the electrical and chemical parameters variation in soil. During the test, voltage gradient, electrical current, zeta potential and pH variations were measured. On the basis of experimental results, computer modeling techniques predicting the variations of these parameters are suggested.

Column tests using KCl and Benzene as tracers were conducted for four different cases: 1) no hydrogen peroxide and no microorganism; 2) hydrogen peroxide only; 3) microorganism only; 4) hydrogen and microorganism to investigate the sorption and degradation characteristics of Benzene. The observed BTCs of KCl and Benzene in all cases showed that the arrival times of the peaks of both tracers coincided well but the peak concentration of Benzene was much lower than that of KCl. This result reveals that a predominant process affecting the transport of Benzene in a sandy soil is an irreversible sorption and/or degradation rather than retardation. Decay of Benzene through sorption and degradation increased with the addition of hydrogen peroxide and/or microorganism. Dissolved oxygen decreased with the increase of Benzene in all cases indicating that Benzene was degraded by dissolved oxygen. For BTCs with the addition of microorganisms (case 3 and case 4), microorganism showed much lower concentrations compared to the initial levels and an increasing tendency with time although concentrations of Benzene returned to zero, indicating a possible retardation of microorganism due to reversible and irreversible sorption to the particle surfaces.
