In this study, a newly modified soil nailing technology named as the pretension soil nailing system, is developed to reduce both facing displacements and ground surface settlements in top-down excavation process as well as to increase the global stability. Up to now, the pretension soil nailing system, has been investigated mainly focusing on an establishment of the design procedure. In the present study, laboratory model tests are carried out to investigate the failure mechanism and behavior characteristics of the pretension soil-nailed wall. Various results of model tests are also analyzed to provide a fundamental basis for the efficient design.
The purpose of this study is to investigate and evaluate management status of use-completed landfill in Kyunggido area and characteristics of its surrounding soil contamination. The soil samples showed Showed the anxious standard of soil contamination. The effect of liner system and leachate treatment unit showed very low because of showing similar concentration with non system landfill. Therefore, the further supplementation of leachate treatment unit, rainfall exclusion unit, LFG exclusion unit etc. must be performed to ensure a efficient management for landfills.
Several soil parameters such as particle characteristics, geological element, drainage and loading conditions are influenced on the shear strength of soil. The characteristics of soil particles are important factor to the shear strength of soil. However, this component is not well considered in the determination of soil strength in Korea. The particle shape of sand was analyzed by utilizing SEM(Scanning Electron Micrograph) and compared its results in terms of aspect ratio, angularity and roughness. Based on the determined soil parameters, the ultimate bearing capacity of sandy ground was estimated by using Terzaghi bearing capacity equation.

The purpose of this study is to identify how much the MODIS NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) can explain the soil moisture simulated from SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) continuous hydrological model. For the application, ChungjuDam watershed (6,661.3 $km^2$) was adopted which covers land uses of 82.2 % forest, 10.3 % paddy field, and 1.8 % upland crop respectively. For the preparation of spatial soil moisture distribution, the SWAT model was calibrated and verified at two locations (watershed outlet and Yeongwol water level gauging station) of the watershed using daily streamflow data of 7 years (2000-2006). The average Nash and Sutcliffe model efficiencies for the verification at two locations were 0.83 and 0.91 respectively. The 16 days spatial correlation between MODIS NDVI and SWAT soil moisture were evaluated especially during the NDVI increasing periods for forest areas.

Two extraction techniques, Ultrasonic and Microwave extraction method, were tested for the determination of arsenic in contaminated soil SRM (Montana Soil). The extraction mixture was prepared by mixing 1 M ortho-phosphoric acid and 0.1 M ascorbic acid. This extractant was known to preserve arsenic species. The appropriate extraction time was 10 min to 20 min and the recovery rate was about 80%. A coupled system, SPE-HG-ICP-AES, was used for the determination of inorganic arsenic species. The detection limit was around 2 $\mu\textrm{g}$/1 and the linearity of calibration curve was better than $R^2$=0.99.
This study is to estimate the spatial distribution of soil loss using the land use data produced from QuickBird satellite imagery. For a small agricultural watershed (1.16 $km^2$) located in the upstream of Gyeongan-cheon watershed, a precise agricultural land use map were prepared using QuickBird satellite image of April 5 of 2003. RUSLE (Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation) was adopted for soil loss estimation. The data (DEM, soil and land use) for the RUSLE were prepared for 5 m and 30 m spatial resolution. The results were compared with each other and the result of 30 m Landsat land use data.
SATEEC ArcView GIS system was developed using the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) and sediment delivery ratio (SDR) modules. In addition, time-variant R and C modules and $R_5$ module were developed and integrated into the SATEEC system in recent years. The SATEEC ArcView GIS 2.1 system is a simple-to-use system which can estimate soil erosion and sediment yield spatially and temporarily using only USLE input data, DEM, and daily rainfall dataset. In this study, the SATEEC 2.1 system was used to evaluate the effects of USLE LS input data considering slope length segmentation on soil erosion and sediment yield estimation. Use of USLE LS with slope length segmentation due to roads in the watershed, soil erosion estimation decreased by 24.70 %. However, the estimated sediment yield using SATEEC GA-SDR matched measured sediment values in both scenarios (EI values of 0.650 and EI 0.651 w/o and w/flow segmentation). This is because the SATEEC GA-SDR module estimates lower SDR in case of greater soil erosion estimation (without flow length segmentation) and greater SDR in case of lower soil erosion estimation (with flow length segmentation). This indicates that the SATEEC soil erosion need to be estimated with care for accurate estimation of SDR at a watershed scale and for accurate evaluation of BMPs in the watershed.
Coastal and fishing facilities are gradually deteriorating in function due to the continual accumulation of soil sediments, which has affected local economic activities. Currently, there are many methods to remove soil sediments, but these methods are either a temporary solution or require a repetitive removal of the soil sediments, which is a huge financial burden for the maintenance of the facilities. To solve these problems, this study proposed a non-power soil cleaning system and evaluated field applicability by carrying out field model tests. The conditions for the evaluation focused on the drainage-elapsed time and drainage-outflow velocity according to the water level change in the water tank. In the field test, silty clay and sand were separately installed, and sedimentation soil removal test was practiced. As a result, the system was verified to have a sufficient outflow velocity for the removal of soil sediments. In addition, a generalization equation that can be used in different regions of the tide was suggested in this study. These results will greatly contribute to removing soil sediments in ports and dike gate facilities on the southwest coast. Since the system is an eco-friendly technology that does not require additional energy, thus it is expected to contribute to maintenance of sustainable facility performance as well as economic effect in the future.
Dynamic numerical simulation of pile-supported slab track system embedded in a soft soil and embankment was performed. 3D model was formulated in a time domain to consider the non-linearity of soil by utilizing FLAC 3D, which is a finite difference method program. Soil non-linearity was simulated by adopting the hysteric damping model and liner elements, which could consider soil-pile interface. The long period seismic loads, Hachinohe type strong motions, were applied for estimating seismic respose of the system, Parametric study was carried out by changing subsoil layer profile, embankment height and seismic loading conditions. The most of horizontal permanent displacement was initiated by slope failure. Increase of the embedded height and thickness of the soft soil layer leads increase of member forces of PHC piles; bending moment, and axial force. Finally, basic guidelines for designing pile-supported slab track system under seismic loading are recommended based on the analysis results.
The soil nailing system at permanent slope reinforcement is used with various facing methods in Korea. Also, pressure-injected grout technique is variously applied to many structures. However, most design of the pressure-injected grout technique have been carried out empirically because of complicated mechanisms associated with the behavior of surrounding soils and the hardening process of cement grout. Therefore this study, a newly modified soil nailing technology named as the PGSN (Pressure Grouting Soil Nailing) system with fabric form is developed to increase the global stability. Up to now, the PGSN system has been estimated mainly focusing on an establishment of the design procedure. In the present study, numerical study are carried out to evaluate potential failure surface and minimum factor of safety including facing stiffness and expanded radius of cemented grout by SSR (Shear Strength Reduction) technique. Also, results of numerical analysis are carried out for the typical section of soil nails slope using $FLAC^{2D}$ program for expanded effective radius by pressure grouting.
