Accelerated soil erosion is a worldwide problem because of its economic and environmental impacts. To effectively estimate soil erosion and to establish soil erosion management plans, many computer models have been developed and used. The Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) has been used in many countries, and input parameter data for RUSLE have been well established over the years. However, the RUSLE cannot be used to estimate the sediment yield for a watershed. Thus, the GIS-based Sediment Assessment Tool for Effective Erosion Control (SATEEC) was developed to estimate soil loss and sediment yield for any location within a watershed using the RUSLE and a spatially distributed sediment delivery ratio. SATEEC was enhanced in this study by developing new modules to:1) simulate the effects of sediment retention basins on the receiving water bodies, 2) prepare input parameters for the Web-based sediment decision support system using a GIS interface. This easy-to-operate SATEEC system can be used to identify areas vulnerable to soil loss and to develop efficient soil erosion management plans.
This study was conducted to investigate the applicability of true model theory in a powered lugged wheel-soil system and to examine the possibility of using principles of similitude in investigating the dimensions of soil parameters pertinent to a powered lugged wheel-soil system concerning the sinkage prediction. The following conclusions were derived from the study; 1) The sinkage of prototype wheels proved to be predicted by those of the model wheels for the range of the dynamic weight tested. 2) A conditional equation which can be used for the prediction of sinkage of prototype by model test was derived as $n_f=n{_\ell}{^{-b}}$. The range of the numerical value of b, which is the exponent on the length dimension of the soil property ${\alpha}$, was found to be -1.48~-2.54. 3) Considering a relatively wide variation of b values, it was concluded that there are several soil properties which are pertinent to the powered lugged-wheel soil system concerning the sinkage prediction.
To obtain site-specific values of the Derived Concentration Guideline Levels (DCGLs) for decommissioning of KRR-1&2, the soil density and distribution coefficient values for Cs-137, a major contaminant radionuclide, were determined. The soil density was evaluated according to the test method established by the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards of the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy (KATS). The distribution coefficient was evaluated using a batch test. The validity of using the evaluated soil density and distribution coefficient as site-specific values was assessed through radiation dose assessment reflecting these values. Average soil density value obtained was 1.738 g/cm3, which was within the typical range of normal soil density, 1.0-1.8 g/cm3. The average distribution coefficient value was 7,754 mL/g. Applying the maximum, average, and minimum values of the evaluated soil density and distribution coefficient showed similar radiation dose results, thus suggesting that it is reasonable to use the average values of each parameter as site-specific values. Findings of this study can help determine DCGLs that reflect the characteristics of the research reactor site.

QAMDI(Quantified Acid Mine Drainage Index) was developed for more synthesised, qualified and quantified assessment index which can be applied to both coal and metal mine drainage. QAMDI is calculated using three parameter groups i.e. acidity, sulfate contents and toxic metal contents. Since QAMDI expressed in terms of concentration. It reveals the different status of each mine drainage more clearly. QAMDI can be converted to the quantity of pollutant loading by being multiplied by the water flux.
During an earthquake, soils filter and send out the shaking to the building and simultaneously it has the role of bearing the building vibrations and transmitting them back to the ground. In other words, the ground and the building interact with each other. Hence, soil-structure interaction (SSI) is a key parameter that affects the performance of buildings during the earthquakes and is worth to be taken into consideration. Columns are one of the most crucial elements in RC buildings that play an important role in stability of the building and must be able to dissipate energy under seismic loads. Recent earthquakes showed that formation of plastic hinges in columns is still possible as a result of strong ground motion, despite the application of strong column-weak beam concept, as recommended by various design codes. Energy is dissipated through the plastic deformation of specific zones at the end of a member without affecting the rest of the structure. The formation of a plastic hinge in an RC column in regions that experience inelastic actions depends on the column details as well as soil-structure interaction (SSI). In this paper, 854 different scenarios have been analyzed by inelastic time-history analyses to predict the nonlinear behavior of RC columns considering soil-structure interaction (SSI). The effects of axial load, height over depth ratio, main period of soil and structure as well as different characteristics of earthquakes, are evaluated analytically by finite element methods and the results are compared with corresponding experimental data. Findings from this study provide a simple expression to estimate plastic hinge length of RC columns including soil-structure interaction.

Shallow slope failures in residual soil during periods of prolonged infiltration are common over the world. One of the key factors that dominate slope stability is hydrological response associated with infiltration. Hence, the soil-water profile during rainfall infiltration into unsaturated soil must me examined to evaluate slope stability. However, the hydraulic response of unsaturated soil is complicated by inherent uncertainties of the soil hydraulic properties. This study presents a methodology for assessing the effects of parameter uncertainty of hydraulic properties on the response of a analytical infiltration model using first-order reliability method. The unsaturated soil properties are considered as uncertain variables with means, standard deviations, and marginal probability distributions. Sensitivities of the probabilistic outcome to the basic uncertainties in the input random variables are provided through importance factors.

In the present study an attempt was made to predict the complex nonlinear parameters of the soil-pile system subjected to the vertical vibration of rotating machines. A three dimensional (3D) finite element (FE) model was developed to predict the nonlinear dynamic response of full-scale pile foundation in a layered soil medium using ABAQUS/CAE. The frequency amplitude responses for different eccentric moments obtained from the FE analysis were compared with the vertical vibration test results of the full-scale single pile. It was found that the predicted resonant frequency and amplitude of pile obtained from 3D FE analysis were within a reasonable range of the vertical vibration test results. The variation of the soil-pile separation lengths were determined using FE analysis for different eccentric moments. The Novak's continuum approach was also used to predict the nonlinear behaviour of soil-pile system. The continuum approach was found to be useful for the prediction of the nonlinear frequency-amplitude response of full-scale pile after introducing the proper boundary zone parameters and soil-pile separation lengths.

When the transient current with high frequency components such as lightning surges are injected the grounding electrodes, the performance of grounding electrodes should be evaluated as grounding impedance. It is restricted to analyze the grounding impedance by measurement approach since the grounding impedance is very different with the shape and size of grounding electrodes, resistivity and relative permittivity of soil and the frequency component of the injected current. So a variety of simulation approaches have been developed. Typically, the soil resistivity measured with low frequency and relative permittivity between 1 and 80 are used for simulation of the grounding impedance. However, the resistivity and relative permittivity of soil are changed with frequency of injected current. In this paper, the frequency-dependent resistivity and relative permittivity of soil are measured and these parameters are reflected in the simulation of the grounding impedance of a ground rod. The simulated results are compared with the measured results. As a result, the simulated results with frequency-dependent soil parameters show capacitive aspect like measured results in the frequency of lower than 100[kHz] and they are more consistent with the measured results in wide frequency range.
Several curvature parameters, solar radiation parameter and topographic flow generation parameters have been summarized and calculated to predict the spatial distribution of soil moisture content. The spatial distribution of soil moisture data can be obtained using Global Positioning System(GPS) and portable soil moisture monitoring equipment, Theta-Probe. Correlation analysis has been performed between the parameters of soil moisture prediction and measured data of soil moisture. Multiple regression analysis of soil moisture prediction shows the potential capability and limitations of existing methods of digital terrain analysis.
The dynamic response of structures under extremely short duration dynamic loads is of great concern nowadays. This paper investigates structures' response as well as the associated structural damage to explosive loads considering and ignoring the supporting soil flexibility effect. In the analysis, buildings are modeled by two alternate approaches namely, (1) building with fixed supports, (2) building with supports accounting for soil-flexibility. A lumped parameter model with spring-dashpot elements is incorporated at the base of the building model to simulate the horizontal and rotational movements of supporting soil. The soil flexibility for various shear wave velocities has been considered in the investigation. In addition, the influence of variation of lateral natural periods of building models on the obtained response and peak response time-histories besides damage indices has also been investigated under blast loads with different peak over static pressures. The Dynamic response is obtained by solving the governing equations of motion of the considered building model using a developed Matlab code based on the finite element toolbox CALFEM. The predicted results expressed in time-domain by the building model incorporating SSI effect are compared with the corresponding model results ignoring soil flexibility effect. The results show that the effect of surrounding soil medium leads to significant changes in the obtained dynamic response of the considered systems and hence cannot be simply ignored in damage assessment and response time-histories of structures where it increases response and amplifies damage of structures subjected to blast loads. Moreover, the numerical results provide an understanding of level of damage of structure through the computed damage indices.
