Monitoring of soil fertility and crop productivity in long-term application of silicate fertilizers is necessary to use fertilizers efficiently. This study was conducted to investigate effects of continuous application of silicate fertilizer for rice cultivation from 1969 to 2014. The treatments were no silicate fertilizer treatments (N, NC, NPK, and NPKC) and silicate fertilizer treatments (N+S, NC+S, NPK+S, and NPKC+S). The 46-yr input of $2\;ton\;ha^{-1}yr^{-1}$ of silicate fertilizer increased pH 0.6 ~ 1.1 and exchangeable Ca $2.0{\sim}2.4cmol_c\;kg^{-1}$ in silicate fertilizer treatments (N+S, NC+S, NPK+S, and NPKC+S) compared with no silicate fertilizer treatments (N, NC, NPK, and NPKC) because silicate fertilizer included Ca component. Also, available silicate concentrations of silicate fertilizer treatments (N+S, NC+S, NPK+S, and NPKC+S) increased $169mg\;kg^{-1}$ compared to no silicate fertilizer treatments. In Period II ('90~'14), the mean annual Si field balance varied from 62 to $175kg\;ha^{-1}yr^{-1}$ in silicate fertilizer treatments, indicating continuous accumulation of soil Si. Silicon uptake and grain yield of rice had greater differences between N treatment and N+S treatment than other treatments. This showed that the application of silicate fertilizer had greater effect in nutrient-poor soils than in proper nutrient soils. Thus the application of silicate fertilizer led to improvement the fertility of soil and increasement of rice production for the lack of soil nutrients.
To verify suitability of the developed nutrient solution for fertigation culture of cucumber, chemical changes of soil, growth characteristics and yield of cucumber as affected by conventional fertigation method (Control), the developed nutrient solution for fertigation culture (DNF) and Yamasaki cucumber recipe (YCR) were investigated. At 48 days after transplant, photosynthetic and transpiration rate of cucumber leaves were the highest in 3/2 strength of DNF and 1/2 strength of YCR, but not different with the Control, in the later growing period photosynthetic rate was the highest in 3/2 strength of DNF and YCR and was clearly different with the Control, transpiration rate was the highest in 3/2 strength of DNF and 1/2, 1 strengths of YCR. The growth and yield of cucumber, nutrient elements of cucumber leaves except for calcium were more in DNF and YCR than in the Control. Compared with pre-treated loam soil, pH of the soil was low and electric conductivity was high in all treatments, amounts of accumulated phosphorus, potassium, calcium, and magnesium were much in the higher concentrations per the kinds of nutrient solutions. From the above results, it was considered that the developed nutrient solution has suitability as nutrient solution for fertigation culture of cucumber.
This research was performed to test the hypothesis that the optimal fertilization rate for red pepper is changed by soil moisture condition. The experiment was conducted in rainfall-intercepted fields in Suwon, South Korea from 2002 to 2003. Soil was irrigated at 30, 50, or 80 kPa of soil moisture tension at 20 cm soil depth in 2002 and 30, 50, 100, or 150 kPa in 2003. For both years, fertilization was performed with four levels: none, 0.5, 1, and 1.5 times of the recommended N, P, and K fertilization rate. The irrigation amount was the greatest at 30 kPa irrigation while the water use efficiency increased with decrease of irrigation amount. The Irrigation amount was 508 mm at 30 kPa irrigation and ranged from 355 mm to 435 mm at 50 kPa irrigation. The maximum yield was found at 30 kPa irrigation and 1.5 times of the recommend fertilization rate in 2002 and 2003. The yield index of red pepper increased linearly with the fertilization rate at 30 kPa which implied that excess irrigation induced nutrient leaching and reduced nutrient availability. The maximum yield in 50 kPa and 80 kPa was found at the recommend fertilization rate while the yield decreased by fertilization at 100 kPa and 150 kPa irrigation. It implies that reduction of fertilization is the feasible practice to mitigate drought stress in fields without stable irrigation resources.

This study was conducted with the data of monitoring on soil chemical properties of rice paddy soils in Gyeongbuk Province. The selected soil chemical properties were analyzed every 4 year from 1999 to 2015. The soil pH measured in 2015 was higher than pH 6.0, which was 0.3-0.4 pH unit higher than data until 2007 survey year. The mean content of organic matter was greater than $24g\;kg^{-1}$ since 2003, but 35% of soil samples remained below the recommended level ($20-30g\;kg^{-1}$) in 2015. The mean concentration of available phosphate was maintained at $40mg\;kg^{-1}$ higher than the upper recommendation level ($80-120mg\;kg^{-1}$), and more than 40% of paddy soils tested were found to have less than the recommendation level during the survey period. The exchangeable K concentration ranged from 0.25 to $0.39cmol_c\;kg^{-1}$. Exchangeable Ca showed an average at the optimum range ($5.0-6.0cmol_c\;kg^{-1}$) during the monitoring period. Exchangeable Mg decreased linearly ($0.02cmol_c\;kg^{-1}\;year^{-1}$) from $1.55cmol_c\;kg^{-1}$ as of 1999 to below the lower level of the recommendation range ($1.5-2.0cmol_c\;kg^{-1}$). The amount of available $SiO_2$ was increased significantly from 2011 to over the recommendation level (${\geq}157mg\;kg^{-1}$). It was revealed that the soil chemical properties of rice paddy fields was influenced by topology, soil texture, type and region as result of principal component analysis or cluster analysis. Therefore, an assessment on chemical properties of rice paddy soils should be performed to consider various soil physical conditions and agronomic practices such as fertilization, cropping system, and so on. Because of the high variability of nutrient levels across Gyeongbuk Province, nutrient management based on soil fertility test is required by respective farm land unit.

To consider the nutrient removal characteristics of BNR process activating soil microorganisms under the influence of DPB and to clear the characteristics of DPB under anoxic condition was investigated in the this study. The batch tests were conducted using sludge sampled from the BNR process activating soil microorganisms during operation periods. The results of this study were summarized as follows: - The DPB(Denitrifying Phosphorus removing Bacteria) performing denitrification and phosphorus uptake in the anoxic phase plays an important role in removing nitrogen and phosphorus in the BNR process activating soil microorganisms. - The PUR(Phosphorus Uptake Rate) of DPB in the anoxic phase was to be about 50% of PUR in the aerobic phase. - The DPB in the BNR process turned out to be increasing nutrient removal efficiency of BNR process.
Nutrients and water absorption by Citrus unshiu Marc. cv. Miyagawa Wase were examined using spray type of out-door hydroponics system. Three different concentration levels of nutrient solution were treated to citrus trees to examine nutrient uptake. To do so, concentration and the volume change of nutrient solution was measured for each treatment. By weighing the volume of solution and citrus trees, amounts of water uptake and fresh weight increase were observed periodically. Water uptake by trees increased as tree grew and time elapsed, but was lower at high level of nutrient concentration than the rest, due partly to the reduction in hydraulic conductance and to the sustained high salt concentration. Rapid increase in fresh weight and nutrient uptake occurred from May to July and from August to September. The amounts of nutrient uptake were significantly different among nutrient levels: the higher concentration, the greater uptake by citrus tree. The absorbed amounts of $NO_3$, K and Ca were much higher than those of $NH_4$, S, P, Mg, and Fe. Most mineral contents in leaves were proportional to the concentration of supplied nutrient solutions. From the results of nutrient absorption and contents in leaves at different levels of nutrient solutions, the composition of major elements for citrus nutrient solution can be modified as follows: 27.1, 16.5, 66.0, 80.0, and $24.0mg\;L^{-1}$ for N, P, K, Ca, and Mg, respectively.
Soil environmental conditions can affect nutrient availability during growth stage of tree fruit. We investigated the cause of disorderd fruit by the influence of soil chemical properties in orchard soil, composition of mineral nutrient in leaves and fruit to occur physiological disorderd fruit at four locations (Ulsan, Gyeongju, Pyeongtaek, Ansung) compared to healthy. There were significantly different (P=0.05) in exchangeable Ca, K, Mg and total nitrogen content in orchard soil between physiological disordered fruit and healthy fruit. The exchangeable Ca content in orchard soil caused by physiological disordered fruit was statistically lower than that of healthy fruit. However, exchangeable K, Mg and total nitrogen contents were higher than that healthy (P=0.05). There was a significant difference (P=0.05) in Ca content between physiological disordered fruit and healthy. Ca content in fruit flesh of physiological disorderedfruit was statistically lower than that of healthy. The physiological disordered fruit was a higher ratio of Mg/Ca in fruit flesh and peel compared to healthy fruit and also the ratios of N/Ca and K/Ca in a leaf were higher. The negative correlation between Ca and K, and Ca and Mg was detected in the fruit flesh of physiological disordered fruit. Therefore, we concluded that insufficient Ca content in fruit may cause 'the physiological disorder' pomelo disease and high content of N, exchangeable K and Mg ion in the soil solution might be disturbs exchangeable Ca ion to be absorbed in fruit.
This study was conducted to investigate tissue nutrient contents and salt accumulation in plastic house soils cultivating lily, rose and carnation. The soil tested had high total salts, available phosphate and exchangeable potassium. The soil cultivating rose had highest salt concentvation followed by chose of carnation and lily. Tissue nutrient contents of lily were higher than chose of carnation and rose. In comparison among cultivars, the nutrient contents were as follows; 'Snow Qeen'>'Le Reve'>'Casa Blanca' in lily; 'Marina'>'Super star'>'Mary Devor'>'Madelon' in carnation; and 'Cocktail'> 'Marina'>'Maderon' in rose. The range of the nutrient contents were: T-N: $1.66\;{\sim}2.35%$, K: $1.73{\sim}2.23%$, Zn: $2.13{\sim}6.43\;mg/kg$, Cu: $3.79{\sim}13.89\;mg/kg$ in carnation; T-N: $0.79{\sim}1.65%$, P: $0.18{\sim}0.44%$, Ca: $0.59{\sim}1.26%$, Mg: $0.21{\sim}0.46%$, Zn: $23.65{\sim}90.30\;mg/kg$, Cu: $0.99{\sim}4.62\;mg/kg$ in lily; and T-N: $0.75{\sim}1.62%$, P: $0.17{\sim}0.30%$, K: $1.60{\sim}2.91%$, Ca: $0.64{\sim}0.94%$, Zn: $24.57{\sim}48.31\;mg/kg$, Cu: $3.10{\sim}9.08\;mg/kg$ in rose. The amount of nutrients uptake per plant was high in order of: K > T-N > Ca > Mg in lily; and T-N > K > Ca > P > Mg in rose.
We performed this study to determine the foliar nutrient concentration and the nutrient stocks of restoration areas and adjacent Pinus densiflora S. et. Z. (red pine) stands in opencast kaolinite mines in Sancheong-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do, southern Korea. We chose six sites to determine foliage nutrient concentrations and the nutrient stocks of soils (0-10 cm depth). The dominant vegetation planted in restoration areas comprised Quercus acutissima Carruth., P. koraiensis S. et. Z., Festuca arundinacea Schreb., and Lespedeza cuneata G. Don. Invading vegetation in the restoration areas comprised Alnus incana (L.) Medik., Robinia pseudoacacia L., and Lespedeza spp., among others. The carbon and nitrogen stocks at 10 cm soil depth were significantly higher in the red pine stands than those in the restoration areas, whereas those of phosphorus, potassium, and magnesium were not significantly different between the two areas. However, calcium stocks were significantly higher in the restoration areas than in the red pine stands. Nitrogen concentration in foliage was higher in L. cuneata (20.28 mg N g-1) than that in F. arundinacea (5.67 mg N g-1), whereas potassium concentration was twice as high in F. arundinacea (18.8 mg K g-1) as that in L. cuneata (9.07 mg K g-1). Foliar nitrogen concentrations in invasive vegetation such as A. incana, R. pseudoacacia, and Lespedeza spp. were twice or four times higher than those of Q. acutissima and P. koraiensis. Our results indicate the development of suitable vegetation and soil amendment treatments to improve poor soil environmental conditions in restoration areas are necessary following opencast kaolinite mining.
