This research was performed to test the hypothesis that the optimal fertilization rate for lettuce is various with soil moisture conditions. The experiment was conducted under a rainfall-intercepted facility in Suwon, South Korea from 2002 to 2003. Soil was irrigated at 30, 50, or 80 kPa of soil moisture tension at 15 cm soil depth in 2002 spring and fall and 20, 30, 50, or 80 kPa in 2003 spring. Fertilization was performed with four levels in spring for both years: none, 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 times of the recommended N, P, and K fertilization rate. The irrigation amount increased with decreased irrigation starting point as soil moisture tension. The maximum yield was found at the lowest soil moisture tension in spring while irrigation at 50 kPa resulted in the greatest yield in fall. The yield responses of lettuce to fertilization rates were various with soil moisture condition. In spring, maximum yield was found at 1.0 or 1.5 times of the recommended fertilization rate at 20, 30, and 50 kPa irrigation while 0.5 or 1.0 times of fertilization rate resulted in the maximum yield in fall. Especially for 80 kPa irrigation in 2003 spring, yield was decreased by fertilization. It suggested that the optimum fertilization rate for lettuce is affected by soil moisture condition and that lower fertilization rate should be suggested when soil is managed in drier condition.
This study was conducted to investigate the influences of sapflow flux on soil water tensions and soil moisture content at the Abies holophylla plots in Gwangneung, Gyeonggido, from September to October 2004. The Abies holophylla had been planted in 1976 and thinning and pruning were carried out in 1996 and 2004. Sapflow flux was measured by the heat pulse method, and soil water tension was measured by tensiometer at hillslope and streamside. Time domain reflectometry probes (TDR) were positioned horizontally at the depth of 10, 30 and 50 cm to measure soil moisture content. All of data were recorded every 30 minutes with the dataloggers. The sapflow flux responded sensitively to rainfall, so little sapflow was detected in rainy days. The average daily sapflow flux of sample trees was 10.16l, a maximum was 15.09l, and a minimum was 0.0l. The sapflow flux's diurnal changes showed that sapflow flux increased from 9 am and up to 0.74 l/30 min. The highest sapflow flux maintained by 3 pm and decreased almost 0.0 l/30 mm after 7 pm. The average soil water tensions were low ($-141.3cmH_2O$, $-52.9cmH_2O$ and $-134.2cmH_2O$) at hillslope and high ($-6.1cmH_2O$, $-18.0cmH_2O$ and $-3.7cmH_2O$) at streamside. When the soil moisture content decreased after rainfall, the soil water tension at hillslope responded sensitively to the sapflow flux. The soil water tension decreased as the sapflow flux increased during the day time, whereas increased during the night time when the sapflow flux was not detected. On the other hand, there was no significant relationship between soil water tension and sapflow flux at streamside. Soil moisture content at hillslope decreased continuously after rain, and showed a negative correlation to sapflow flux like a soil water tension at hillslope. As considered results above, it was confirmed that the response of soil moisture tension to sapflow flux at hillslope and streamside were different.
A study was carried out to develop a modified Gardner's method, which enabled us to obtain simultaneously both the unsaturated hydraulic conductivities and the moisture retention curves by the use of a soil moisture pressure-plate extractor. The unsaturated hydraulic conductivity was calculated from soil moisture changes under different tension ranges in the pressure- plate extractor by means of Gardner's pressure-plate outflow equation. From 30mbar-tension to 10bar-tension, the unsaturated hydraulic conductivities obtained on three soils (Bonryang sandy loam, Yesan silt loam, and Pogog clay loam) varied $3.09{\times}10^{-2}cm/day{\sim}4.06{\times}10^{-6}cm/day$, $1.34{\times}10^{-2}cm/day{\sim}7.30{\times}10^{-6}cm/day$, and $1.83{\times}10^{-2}cm/day{\sim}8.50{\times}10^{-6}cm/day$, respectively. In comparison with the outflow method, it is inconvenient to perform the periodic determinations of the soil moisture content that require release of the applied Pressure before readjusting the pressure desired for each measurement. Nevertheless, the main advantage of the modified method is that the unsaturated hydraulic conductivities of different soils can be calculated simultaneously with a small amount of each soil sample. It is concluded that the unsaturated hydraulic conductivity can be calculated from soil moisture changes in the soil moisture pressure-plate extractor.
This study was performed to investigate the behaviour of root zone environments under the control of soil temperature and tension of soil moisture near the root Bone of 'Kyoho' grapes tree grown on restricted root zone system in plastic greenhouse. Maximum diurnal air temperature inside plastic greenhouse ranged between 25.1 and 32.7$^{\circ}C$, and the average of nocturnal air temperature inside plastic greenhouse maintained at 18$^{\circ}C$ in winter season. Also the minimum diurnal relative humidity ranged between 50 and 55%, and the maximum nocturnal relative humidity ranged between 84 to 87%. At a depth of 15cm from soil surface, the average soil temperature maintained at 25.6$^{\circ}C$ for under-ground heating, and appeared to 17.4$^{\circ}C$ for unheated condition. Although the tension of soil moisture just after irrigation sharply decreased to pF 1.5, the tension of soil moisture at the depth of 15cm maintained at pF 2.0~2.2. It is suggested that the tension of soil moisture at the depth of 15cm might be used as the standard for the determination of irrigation set point. Effective drainage system is needed to prevent the spindly and succulent growth of vine trees grown in restricted root zone system.
Double cropping system in a year in Kyoho grapes (Vitis labruscana L.) has currently been attempted in the plastic greenhouse. One of the problems in double cropping system is the promotion of bud break in summer season and shoot fertility. Effects of the control of soil moisture tension near the root zone and treatments of bud dormancy breaking agents on bud breaking in summer were examined to promote the bud break for the second fruiting. The lignification of shoots was induced in July or August by the control of soil moisture tension in root zone environment. The first shoot growth was almost the same as that in common plastic greenhouses. The highest bud break value appeared in the plot of cyanamide chemicals mixed with merit blue as over 75% bud break rate. The bud break rate in the discontinuing plot in irrigation showed significantly higher in bud break than that in the continuing plot in irrigation. Despite of the final high bud break rate, the time of bud break was irregular.
This study examines the behaviour of single micropiles subjected to axial tension or compression load in collapsible loess under in-situ moisture content and saturated condition. Five tension loading tests and five compression loading tests on single micropiles were carried out at a typical loess site of the Loess Plateau in Northwest China. A series of laboratory tests, including grain size distribution, specific gravity, moisture content, Atterberg limits, density, granular components, shear strength, and collapse index, were carried out during the micropile loading tests to determine the values of soil parameters. The loess at the test site poses a severe collapse risk upon wetting. The tension or compression load-displacement curves of the micropiles in loess, under in-situ moisture content or saturated condition, can generally be simplified into three distinct regions: an initial linear, a curvilinear transition, and a final linear region, and the bearing capacity or failure load can be interpreted by the L1-L2 method as done in other studies. Micropiles in loess should be considered as frictional pile foundations though the tip resistances are about 10%-15% of the applied loads. Both the tension and compression capacities increase linearly with the ratio of the pile length to the shaft diameter, L/d. For micropiles in loess under in-situ moisture content, the interpreted failure loads or capacities under tension are 66%-87% of those under compression. However, the prewetting of the loess can lead to the reductions of 50% in the tensile bearing capacity and 70% in the compressive bearing capacity.

Infiltration and water flow in the upper soil layer of a deep water table aquifer are modeled for multistorm runoff events. The infiltration process is developed using the sharp wetting front model of Green and Ampt, and the following redistribution process is modeled using the gravity drained rectangular approximation. The Brooks-Corey model [Brooks and Corey, 1966] is adopted to relate the effective soil saturation, the tension head, and the unsaturated hydraulic conductivity Firstly, the infiltration and redistribution model is developed for a single stom runoff event. Then a couple of events combined for multistorm runoff events. In the later case, infiltration rate of the second rainfall is strongly influenced by the length of the rainfall hiatus and soil moisture profile.

The laboratory model test was conducted by dividing domestic reclaimed tideland into Sandy Loam (SL) and Silt Clay Loam (SiCL) to estimate soil moisture change and water supply according to soil characteristic when establishing irrigation plan for reclaimed tideland upland crop. In addition, the applicability of each scenario was verified using Van Genuchten model, which is the most widely used mathematical model for analyzing soil moisture characteristics of reclaimed tideland uplands crops. The required water supply according to the target soil moisture tension by reclaimed tideland is as follow. In the case of SL, soil depths of 0~10 cm, 10~20 cm were analyzed as 19 mm, 35 mm to reach the field capacity, and SiCL, 33 mm, 63 mm. The required water supply of SiCL was higher than that of SL. The study compared the simulation results from the scenarios of Van Genuchen model and the measured results from the laboratory model test based on according to the reclaimed tidelands. In the case of parameter, θs, θr, α, η were analyzed 0.55, 0.18, 0.064, 1.74 in SL and 0.46, 0.22, 0.105, 1.92 in SiCL. In terms of soil characteristics, SL with better water permeability was found to have higher applicability than SiCL. By Soil depth, applicability was found in 0~10 cm directly affected by water supply.

The purpose of this study was to verify the shore margin protection effect of a root system developed from direct sticking of Salix gracilistyla Miq., focusing on the reinforcement of soil shear strength. The materials were 20cm long sticks whose average diameter and weight were 7.52mm and 14.58g respectively, and sandy loam(Sand 60.36%, Silt 28%, Clay 11.64%), whose maximum dry weight(${\gamma}$$_{dmax}$) was 1.59gf/㎤ at the water ratio( $W_{opt}$) 13.8%. The direct shearing test(KS F 2343) was applied to cylindric columms(diameter 132mm) of pure soil and two years old root reinforced soil. At each condition of vertical stress, 10N/$ extrm{cm}^2$, 14.41N/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and 18.82 N/$\textrm{cm}^2$, five soil+root columns were sheared. After shear tests, the root area ratio and soil moisture on the shear plane were measured. The results of this research were as follows: 1. The average of root area ratio was 1.86% and the soil moisture 14.67%. 2. Two years old root system was found to increase the soil shear strength of pure soil in terms of Cohesion(C) and Inner friction Angle($\phi$) as follows. 3. The relationship between root area ratio and the increased shear strength can be presented with the following equation, $\Delta$S ≒ 0.33ㆍ TrㆍAs/A $\Delta$S : Increased Shear Strength Tr : Average Tension Strength of Root, Ar/A : Root Area Ratioioage Tension Strength of Root, Ar/A : Root Area Ratio
This research was performed to test the hypothesis that the optimal fertilization rate for red pepper is changed by soil moisture condition. The experiment was conducted in rainfall-intercepted fields in Suwon, South Korea from 2002 to 2003. Soil was irrigated at 30, 50, or 80 kPa of soil moisture tension at 20 cm soil depth in 2002 and 30, 50, 100, or 150 kPa in 2003. For both years, fertilization was performed with four levels: none, 0.5, 1, and 1.5 times of the recommended N, P, and K fertilization rate. The irrigation amount was the greatest at 30 kPa irrigation while the water use efficiency increased with decrease of irrigation amount. The Irrigation amount was 508 mm at 30 kPa irrigation and ranged from 355 mm to 435 mm at 50 kPa irrigation. The maximum yield was found at 30 kPa irrigation and 1.5 times of the recommend fertilization rate in 2002 and 2003. The yield index of red pepper increased linearly with the fertilization rate at 30 kPa which implied that excess irrigation induced nutrient leaching and reduced nutrient availability. The maximum yield in 50 kPa and 80 kPa was found at the recommend fertilization rate while the yield decreased by fertilization at 100 kPa and 150 kPa irrigation. It implies that reduction of fertilization is the feasible practice to mitigate drought stress in fields without stable irrigation resources.
