  • This research developed a method for the estimation of groundwater recharge by yielding daily soil moisture content and watershed evapotranspiration from the water balance concept of the unsaturated and saturated layers in rainfall-runoff model called DAWAST. The goal of the research is to estimate the groundwater recharge fulfilling conditions of the safe discharge for any season. To meet this goal, the data of groundwater level and stream flow rate have been monitored in a study area and used to validate the model.

  • The grid-based KlneMatic wave STOrm Runoff Modei (Kim, 1998; Kim, et al., 1998) which predicts temporal variation and spatial distribution of saturated overland flow, subsurface flow and stream flow was evaluated at two watersheds. This model adopts the single overland flowpath algorithm and simulates surface and/or subsurface water depth at each cell by using water balance of hydrologic components. The model programed by C-language uses ASCII-formatted map data supported by the irregular gridded map of the GRASS (Geographic Resources Analysis Support System) GIS and generates the spatial distribution maps of discharge, flow depth and soil moisture of the watershed.

  • Geophysical investigation in non-destructive testing is economically less expensive than boring testing and providing geotechnical information over wide-area. But, it provides only limited geotechnical information, which is hardly used to the design. Accordingly, we performed electrical resistivity experiments on large scale of soil model to analyze the correlation between electrical resistivity response and soil water contents. The soils used in the experiments were the Jumunjin standard sand and weathered granite soil. Each soil particle size distribution and coefficient of uniformity of experimental material obtained in the experiments were maintained in a state of the homogeneous. The specifications of the model used in this study is $160{\times}100{\times}50$(cm) of acrylic, and each soil was maintained at the height 30 cm. The water content were measured using the 5TE sensors (water contents sensors) which is installed 7 ~ 8 cm apart vertically by plugging to floor. The results of the resistivity behavior pattern for Jumunjin standard sand was found to be sensitive to the water content, while the weathered granite soil was showing lower resistivity over the time, and there was no significant change in behavior pattern observed. So, it results that the Jumunjin standard sand's particle current conduction was better than the weathered granite soil's particle through contact with the distilled water. This lab test was also compared with the result of a test bed site composed of similar weathered soil. It was confirmed that these experiments were underlying research of non-destructive investigation techniques to improve the accuracy to estimate the geotechnical parameter.

  • Generally, an unsaturated condition was not considered to predict the long-term strength and drainage behaviors on compacted road foundations. However, it is logical way to consider the unsaturated condition and hysteresis behavior on road foundations like subbase and subgrade. For more quantitative analysis, rational experimental approach requires proper laboratory tool and material model, and hydraulic properties of pavement geomaterials under unsaturated conditions. In this study, therefore, laboratory data from the soil-water characteristic curve tests were used to predict suction and unsaturated permeability on pavement foundations and the results were analyzed based on the nonlinear fitting model considered. In addition to that, the unsaturated moisture capacity of each material is discussed.

  • A CELTHYM(CEll-based Long-term HYdrologic Model), a pre-processor and a post-processor that can be integrated with geographic information system(GIS) were developed to predict the stream flow from the small agricultural watershed on the daily basis. The CELTHYM calculates the direct runoff from a grid using SCS curve number method and then sum up all of cells with respect to a sub-catchment area belonged to a stream grid and integrated to an outlet. Base flow of a watershed outlet was computed by integrating of the base flow of each stream grid that was averaged the sub-catchment deep-percolation and calculated with the release rate. Two kind of water budget equation were used to compute the water balance in a grid that was classified into not paddy field and paddy field. One of the two equation is a soil water balance equation to account the soil moisture of the upland, forest and excluding paddy field grid. The other is a paddy water balance equation for the paddy field, calculating the ponding depth, the effective rainfall, the deep percolation and the evapotranspiration.

  • Leakage detection system can possibly locate leak point without laboratory analysis. Several different types of sensors provide these benefits. But the use of these technologies is not widespread, mainly because of cost. Each of the leakage detection systems available has different advantages and disadvantages. The ideal system would be affordable, durable enough to last through the life of the landfill, automated, and applicable to all types of landfills. The laboratory tests were performed to investigate the relationship between electrical resistivity and the unsaturated subsurface condition and to evaluate the contamination due to leachate based on measuring electrical resistivity. The results of experiment show that the electrical resistivity of soil decreases as moisture density increases. The electrical resistivity of soil decreases as the concentration of leachate in pore fluid increases. These facts indicate that electrical resistivity method can be a promising tool in detecting of leachate. Also, the field model tests were conducted to verify that detection of leachate leak point on detection system using electrical characteristics is accurate. Field model test results of leakage detection system imply that the leakage detection system using electrical characteristics have the great potential of detecting exactly the leak point of leachate.

  • Korea has plentiful precipitation but rainfall events concentrate on several months of rainy season in her weather condition. Korea, therefore, experiences drought for a given period every year. Moreover the soil has usually low water holding capacity, as it is composed coarse particles originated from the granite. Response of several oaks and the Korean red pine (Pinus densiflora) on water stress showed that water budget was significant factor determining vegetation distribution. In addition, dehydration level due to cold resistance mechanism of several evergreen plants during the winter season was closely related to their distribution in natural condition. Experimental result under water stress showed that the Korean red pine was very tolerant to desiccation but the seedlings showed high mortality during the dry season. The mortality tended to proportionate to soil moisture content of each site. A comparison between soil moisture content during June when it is severe dry season and moisture content of the culture soil when the pine seedlings reached the permanent wilting point due to water withheld proved that high mortality during the dry season was due to water deficit. Water potential of sample plants measured during the exposure experiment to the air pollutant showed a probability that water related factors would dominate the occurrence of visible damage and the tolerance level of sample plants. In both field survey and laboratory experiment, plants exposed to air pollution showed more rapid transpiration than those grown in the unpolluted condition. The result would due to injury of leaf surface by air pollutants. Aluminum (Al/sup 3+/) increased in the acid soil not only inhibits root growth but also leads to abnormal distribution of root system and thereby caused water stress. The water stresses due to air pollution and soil acidification showed a possibility that they play dominating roles in inducing forest decline additionally to the existing water deficit due to weather and soil conditions in Korea. Sludge, which can contribute to improve field capacity, as it is almost composed of organic matter, showed an effect ameliorating the retarded growth of plant in the acidified soil. The effect was not less than that of dolomite known in widely as such a soil ameliorator. Litter extract contributed also to mitigate the water stress due to toxic Al/sup 3+/. We prepared a model showing the potential interaction of multiple stresses, which can cause forest decline in Korea by synthesizing those results. Furthermore, we suggested restoration plans, which can mitigate such forest decline in terms of soil amelioration and vegetation restoration.

  • The behaviour of insectcide ethoprophos (O-ethyl S,S-propyl phosphorodithioate) in soil was investigated. In a laboratory study, the degradation of ethoprophos in soil followed first-order reaction kinetics. The half-life of the insecticide in the soil incubated with 10, 18 and $25^{\circ}C$ was 12.4, 5.5 and 2.5 days, respectively. Arrhenius activation energy was 73.8 KJ/mole. The half-life was 46.4, 17.6 and 6.9 day in the soil with 7, 14 and 19% of soil water content, respectively. The moisture dependence B value in empirical equation was 1.67. The adsorption isotherm for ethoprophos in the soil agreed with freundlich equation. The adsorption distribution coefficient (Kd) was 0.27. In a field study prepared in autumn with undisturbed soil column in a mini-lysimeter system, ethoprophos residues were largely distributed in the top $0{\sim}2cm$ soil layer and moved down to the top 6cm soil layer. Persistence of ethoprophos in field soil was correlated with variation in weather pattern during the period of experiments. The half-life of ethoprophos treated at March and October was about 17 and 5 days, respectively. The ethoprophos woil was degraded up to 90% at 37day after the both treatment. In persistence and mobility of ethoprophos in field soil, the observed data were reasonably corresponded with predicted data by some computer model of pesticide behaviour.

  • Until now, the pore size distribution, PSD, of soil profile has been calculated from soil moisture characteristic data by water release method or mercury porosimetry using the capillary rise equation. But the current methods are often difficult to use and time consuming. Thus, in this work, theoretical framework for an easy and fast technique was suggested to estimate the PSD from unsaturated hydraulic conductivity data in an undisturbed field soil profile. In this study, unsaturated hydraulic conductivity data were collected and simulated by the variation of soil parameters in the given boundary conditions (Brooks and Corey soil parameters, ${\alpha}_{BC}=1-5L^{-1}$, b = 1 - 10; van Genuchten soil parameters, ${\alpha}_{VG}=0.001-1.0L^{-1}$, m = 0.1 - 0.9). Then, $K_s$ (1.0 cm $h^{-1})$ was used as the fixed input parameter for the simulation of each models. The PSDs were estimated from the collected K(h) data by model simulation. In the simulation of Brooks-Corey parameter, the saturated hydraulic conductivity, $K_s$, played a role of scaling factor for unsaturated hydraulic conductivity, K(h) Changes of parameter b explained the shape of PSD curve of soil intimately, and a ${\alpha}_{BC}$ affected on the sensitivity of PSD curve. In the case of van Genuchten model, $K_s$ and ${\alpha}_{VG}$ played the role of scaling factor for a vertical axis and a horizontal axis, respectively. Parameter m described the shape of PSD curve and K(h) systematically. This study suggests that the new theoretical technique can be applied to the in situ prediction of PSD in undisturbed field soil.
