Road construction is becoming increasingly important in marine and desert areas due to population growth and economic development. However, the load carrying capacity of pavement is of gear concern to design and geotechnical engineers because of the poor engineering properties of the soils in these areas. Therefore, stabilization of the soils is regarded as an important issue. Besides, due to the fuels combustion and carbonate decomposition, cement industry generates around 5% of global $CO_2$ emission. Thus, using bentonite as a natural pozzolan in soil stabilization is more eco-friendly than using cement. The aim of this research is to experimentally study of the stabilized marine and desert sands using deep mixing method by ordinary Portland cement and sodium bentonite. Different partial percentages of cement along with different weight percentages of sodium bentonite were added to the sands. Unconfined compression test (UCS), Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX), and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) were conducted on the specimens. Moreover, a mathematical model was developed for predicting the strength of the treated soils.
Generally, the effect of the cement deep mixing method on the improvement of clay ground is far greater than the effect of physical improvement. Although it leads to great improvement strength in the initial stage, there are not many constructional precedents in Korea and it is hard to manage quality according to the cement-clay mixing method. In order to figure out the strength characteristics according to the mixing ratio of cement, sand, and clay and the improvement characteristics of weak ground according to the forms of the specimens to be improved, marine clay was used in this study to conduct the uniaxial compression test and soil bin model test. The test piece specimens for the uniaxial compression test were mixed with sand in a fixed ratio with the criterion of the water cement ratio. The cement was mixed with clay in the ratios of 10%, 20%, 30%, and 40% to the clay weight. The moisture content of the soil ground was made in the ratios of 40%, 60%, and 80%. The test piece specimens went through curing by moistening for 7, 14, and 28 days and underwent the uniaxial compression test according to the curing period. For the bearing test, the soil bin models were made and the ground improved in the Mat type was formed. After that, the bearing strength was compared in this study according to the improvement ratio and analyzed the intervening effect between the walls of the improved specimens.

A few study has been performed on the durability of subbase treated with geo-cement for the farm road although many papers for the road treated with soil-cement were published. The objectives of the study are to develop the stabilizing method of subbase using additives of cement groups and 2nd additives such as gypsum and MgO, etc. A series of test was performed to investigate possible mixing ratios with geo-cement A, B, C, D and 2nd additives on the various soft soils from the rice paddy. Based on test results, durability index was greatly affected by geo-cement D which was mainly composed with gypsum. Compressive strength of clayey soil such as Soil I was less than threshold strength(30kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$) but the strength was increased as addition of gypsum and MgO. It is recommended that geo-cement for soil stabilization has to be carefully chosen because strength characteristics of subbase are varied not only with soils but also with addition of geo-cement and 2nd additives. The developed method in this study can be used subbase treatment of low-cost agricultural roads.

Square patterned jet grouting technique is the soil improvement method that shakes the special end monitor left and right like as tail fin and mixing the soil and cement paste after cutting the soil in square shape by injecting the cement paste from installed two nozzles. The structure shape by jet grouting technique can be constructed in various shapes and sizes like as square, circle, and sector form designed by an engineer. Also, it can be constructed without waste material and reduced a construction time of work economically. In this study, the applicability of Square Jet Grouting to reduce permeability is estimated by FEM analysis and in-situ test in many cases which are various coefficient of permeability and breadth of grouting structure.
The removal characteristics of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) and heavy metals in contaminated soils with ultrasonic washing have been studied. The ultrasonic washing was evaluated on a laboratory scale. In this investigation, the effects of factors such as ultrasonic frequency, power intensity, duration of irradiation, contents of the TPHs and heavy metals and mixing ratios between the contaminated soils and water, were considered. Experimental results suggested that the rates for contaminant extraction of the TPHs and heavy metals in the contaminated soil increased considerably with the ultrasonic washing. Therefore, the ultrasonic washing has previously been to be an effective method to remediate the contaminated soils with the TPHs and heavy metals.

This study was carried out to provide basic information to improve the surrounding ecosystems with benefit analysis and monitoring in cut slopes following establishment of a test construction to improve ecological environment in slopes of an expressway. Field tests from October 2012 to May 2013 were conducted in Seosejong IC and Shinyang IC. In order to improve the view of slopes, soil condition is an important factor. The earth slope, it is possible to introduce directly the plant. Stable construction method was applied, another foundation for planting is necessary. The mixing ratio of the seeds according to the experimental results, the difference was found at an early stage plants in Site I (Seosejong IC). Trees were planted on terraced structures were well coordinated and pictures. The growth of planted trees was good in Site II (Shinyang IC). Due to the use of plants in the landscape will continue to change. Thus, long-term monitoring and landscape analysis will be needed.
The bored pile is widely used as a low noise and vibration piling method in Korea. However, there is design tendency to minimize the friction capacity of the bored pile because of uncertainty and the quality control specification is not set up. This research analysed the strength characteristics of cement paste after the uniaxial compression test with various condition. Test results show that the compressive strength of cement paste with w/c=0.83 was up to $156.0kgf/cm^2$, and the lower w/c ratio and the longer age, the strength of cement paste increased. Also the higher soil mixing ratio, the strength of soil cement decreased, and too high soil mixing ratio caused the malfuction of soil cement. Also this research analysed the 188 dynamic pile test results which were performed before and after hardening of cement paste. Analysis result showed that the average ultimate unit friction capacity was $9.1tf/m^2$ and this result surpassed the common design criteria of the bored pile.
To improve the stability of levee structure, it is required to use good quality fill materials, intensive management, appropriate hydraulic structure and construction of cut-off wall. In particular, the most important factor of levee construction technology is to use bed sediment for its safety. In this study, seepage model test and numerical analysis were performed based on a standard section of levee recommended in the river design standard of korea (2005). The results of test and analysis show that most of the bed soil is a sand (SP in USCS), which does not satisfy the permeability criteria for levee materials ($< k=10^{-3}cm/sec$), thus for the safety of levee it is required to adopt a stabilizing method such as good quality soil mixing, water content control.
Standardized remediation process for the soil contaminated with arsenic is insufficient due to characteristics of its anion-mobility and speciation changed by Eh-pH of soil. One of the well-known efficient remediation processes is the modified soil washing that particle separation process by only water. However, it is required that the treatment plan for the fine soil what was discharged after modified soil washing. Therefore, this research suggests the treatment plan that the recycling method using arsenic immobilization by FeS-$H_2O_2$. The batch experiments results for the arsenic immobilization showed that the water content was at least 50%, the injection of FeS and $H_2O_2$ (assay-35%) were 8% (w/watdrybase) and 0.2 mL/10 g of fine soil respectively. Arsenic concentration with KSLT was decreased about 95.4%. The results indicated that the mixing of FeS-$H_2O_2$ was highly efficient on the immobilization of As-contaminated soil. The mixing ratio as 13% of bentonite with 3% of cement (at based on 100% of immobilized fine soil) was satisfied with standard of liner for landfill construction.
Laboratory soil washing experiments with HCl or EDTA were conducted to remediate lead-contaminated soil in a firing range. After lead bullets were removed by standard sieve #18 (1.0 mM), Pb concentrations were measured by EPA Method 3050B (9,443 mg/kg) and Korea Standard Test (4,803.5 mg/kg). The results of the batch test showed that the removal efficiency curve was logarithmic and approximately 90% of lead in soil was removed, when HCl was used. In case of EDTA, the removal efficiency increased proportionally to the concentration of EDTA, up to 98% lead removal with 0.1M EDTA. High mixing strength resulted in increase of removal efficiency and kinetics showed that the most lead was extracted in 10 min.
