  • Cracks in soil provide significant preferential pathways for contaminant transport and rainfall infiltration. Water exchange between the soil matrix and crack is crucial to characterize the preferential flow, which is often quantitatively described by a water exchange ratio. The water exchange ratio is defined as the amount of water flowing from the crack into the clay matrix per unit time. Most of the previous studies on the water exchange ratio mainly focused on cracked sandy soils. The water exchange between cracks and clay matrix were rarely studied mainly due to two reasons: (1) Cracks open upon drying and close upon wetting. The deformable cracks lead to a dynamic change in the water exchange ratio. (2) The aperture of desiccation crack in clay is narrow (generally 0.5 mm to 5 mm) which is difficult to model in experiments. This study will investigate the water exchange between a deformable crack and the clay matrix using a newly developed experimental apparatus. An artificial crack with small aperture was first fabricated in clay without disturbing the clay matrix. Water content sensors and suction sensors were instrumented at different places of the cracked clay to monitor the water content and suction changes. Results showed that the water exchange ratio was relatively large at the initial stage and decreased with the increasing water content in clay matrix. The water exchange ratio increased with increasing crack apertures and approached the largest value when the clay was compacted at the water content to the optimal water content. The effective hydraulic conductivity of the crack-clay matrix interface was about one order of magnitude larger than that of saturated soil matrix.

  • The use stage of a textile product impacts sustainability more significantly than other stages of the product's life cycle due to repeated washing and drying. This study determines efficient washing conditions, with high detergency, to reduce energy consumption from excessive washing and improve the washing process sustainability. Detergency was measured at various washing temperatures ($20^{\circ}C$, $40^{\circ}C$, and $60^{\circ}C$) and time (10 min, 20 min, and 30 min) using standardized soiled fabrics, i.e., 100% cotton, polyester/cotton (65%/35%), and 100% polyester woven fabric soiled with pigment/sebum, carbon black/mineral oil, soot/mineral oil, cocoa, blood, and red wine. Detergency at the washing condition of $20^{\circ}C$ and 30 min was higher than that at $40^{\circ}C$ and 10 min. In addition, detergency at the condition of $40^{\circ}C$ and 30 min was also higher than that at $60^{\circ}C$ and 10 minutes. This may be because a reduced washing effect at low washing temperatures was complemented by increased mechanical action over a long time. Further, washing temperature and time, with the same detergency, differed based on the type of fiber and soil. Also, the influence of a detergent on the detergency depends on the type of soil. The results suggest that energy and detergent have been consumed more than necessary in actual laundry. According to each type of fiber and soil, washing conditions designed to reduce the energy consumption of the washing process while maintaining the same detergency, were determined.

  • Utilization of underground construction if increased by the large size & skycraperlization of building recently. Therefore. waterproof dependence of underground construction is risen. However, water leakage was happened by rupture by concrete conduct, drying shrinkage. form tie. In underground environment soil class, degradation of waterproofing is showing to corrode by oil. An odious smell by oil, promotion evil of reinforcing rod corrosion, declination of durability can happen. Then, practical un degree of underground spare becomes low, Because oil or water permeates by construction by degradation to waterproof class corrode by oil, is considered to affect evil durability of construction.

  • A simple and rapid capillary electrophoresis method was developed for the quantitative analysis of common triazine herbicides. Cyclic voltammetry was employed to clarify the detection voltage which showed characteristic irreversible cathodic peaks. For the analysis, the mixture of triazine herbicides was applied in a microfluidic chip to determine the CE-separated peaks. Soil sample extracts were analyzed directly after drying and redissolution with the supporting electrolyte but without other pretreatment. The results were comparable to those obtained by HPLC with UV detection. Therefore, this method can be used in the rapid determination of pesticide/herbicide residues.

  • A variety of microbial strains isolated from soil were tested for their ability to produce D-tagatose from D-galactose. An organism that can convert D-galactose into D-tagatose was selected and was identified as Enterobacter agglomerans. The cells grown on the induction medium containing 20 g/l arabinose were found to the best conversion potential among different carbohydrates and the conversion yield was about 15% when 20 gll galactose was used. The isolated crystals were obtained from the culture broth after the purification process such as treatment of ion resins, crystallization, and drying. The recovery yield was 70% after the purification. The crystals were identified as D-tagatose by the infrared spectroscopy, HPLC, specific optical rotation, and melting point.

  • A field study was performed to investigate the effect of water saving irrigation method on water use efficiency and rice yield. The field plot was 40a (40 ${\times}$ 100m) in size and located at Buryangmyun, Kimjae city, Chonbuk province. Field measurements were made during the growing seasons, May to September of the year 1998 and 1990. Irrigation water volume, drainage water volume, rainfall and ponding depth were measured. Irrigation water management practice employed was such that to keep the ponding depth about 3 to 4cm by intermittent irrigation with drying the soil surface until hair cracks emerge before the next irrigation. The amounts of water volume irrigated and drained were measured by pipe flow meter and ponding depth was observed by using a partly buried 120mm diameter PVC pipe. The results showed that the irrigation water depths, the rainfalls, and the drainage depths were 379mm, 458mm, and 448mm in 1988, and 274mm, 819mm, and 736mm in 1990, respectively. The average yield was 590kg per 10a. The water saving irrigation method saved irrigation water by about 20% with higher yield compared with the traditional method.

  • Recently, the study for practical construction application no recycled aggregate concrete is actively being proceeded, on the purpose of technical development for recycling on the construction waste concrete occurred at the time of destruction of building construction by the rapid increase of building wastes and exhaustion of natural aggregates. But, the durability of investigation with all sorts of fluidity and engineering property for application recycled aggregate concrete to practical construction must be done at the same time. Especially, because of the real condition for chemical attack of concrete construction by the acid rain, acidification of soil, deepening of air pollution and dirty water etc. being come to the fore a serious problem, the study on the chemical soundness of concrete durability must be accompanied. This study is composed as: I series: Analysis for chemical soundness of aggregates. II series: Analysis for chemical soundness of natural and recycled aggregate concrete against $Na_2$$SO_4$ solution in drying and wet curing condition ($at20~80^{\circ}C$).

  • This experiment was carried out to elucidate the effect of the midsummer drainage times and some growth regulators on lodging characters, lodging and yield in puddled-soil drill seeding in rice. Dongjinbyeo, the mid-late maturing rice variety was seeded at May 11 by seeding machine with 4cm of furrow depth. Experimental plots were divided two main treatment without midsummer drain and two time drains (30 and 50 days after seeding), Inabenfide(IBF) was applied 40days before heading(DBH) and IBP was applied at 30DBH, respectively. Culm length was shorten, the wall of N$_4$ was thicken, and the breaking weight was increased at two time drainage and growth regulators applied in order of Inabenfide, IBP, and Control. Lodging wasn't occurred at two time drainage but it was occurred at none drainage in the order of Control, IBP, and Inabenfide applied. Yield was higher at two time drainage compared with none drainage and higher in order of Inabenfide, IBP and Control in none drainage but wasn't significantly different among growth regulators applied in two time drainage. Therefore, two times midsummer soil drying is recommendable management method for puddled -soil drill seeding of rice. • Physical and cultural properties were investigated on the rice-seed pellets made by the pelleting machine(Yu, 2003) as the changes with mixing ratios of soil to rice seed of 6 : 1, 7 : 1, and 8 : I, and rotating speeds of forming rolls of 7, 10, and 13 rpm. Average weight, average diameter, and average sphericity of the pellets were 1.70 g, 12.0 ㎜, and 99.1 %, respectively. Average number of seeds per pellet was more than 3, and almost all pellets had more than 3 seeds in the cases of mixing ratios of 6 : 1, and 7 : 1 at the forming rolls' speed of 7 rpm. Gradual drying was needed because rapid drying caused cracks on surface of the pellets. Compression strength of the pellets dried in shady room was in the range of 132 ∼ 152 N, which was enough for handling. Comparing with the previous pellets(Park, 2002), average number of seeds per pellet, ratio of pellets including more than 3 seeds, and compression strength increased due to the effects of pressure feed of pellet materials, and improvements of the forming rolls. Emergence ratio of the pellets made at the mixing ratio of 6 : 1 and the forming rolls' speed of 7 rpm, was 100 % on dry paddy and was 97 % on flooded paddy surface. Good growth characteristics, and yield except number of seedling stand and ratio of missing plant were shown in planting of the pellets made at the mixing ratio of 7 : 1 and the forming rolls' speed of 7 rpm on flooded paddy surface field. Considering the cultural results, the mixing ratio of 6 : 1, and the forming rolls' speed of 7 rpm seems to be optimum operating condition for the improved pelleting machine.

  • Morels (Morchella spp.) are valuable medicinal and edible mushrooms. In this study, chemical profiles of aromas and lipophilic extracts of black morel (Morchella importuna) grown in China were analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectroscopy, along with the evaluation of antioxidant and antimicrobial activities for the lipophilic extracts. Sixty-five compounds in total were identified from the aromas, and 1-octen-3-ol was the main component for aromas of fresh (34.40%) and freeze-dried (68.61%) black morels, while the most abundant compound for the aroma of the oven-dried sample was 2(5H)-furanone (13.95%). From the lipophilic extracts, 29 compounds were identified with linoleic acid as the main compound for fresh (77.37%) and freeze-dried (56.46%) black morels and steroids (92.41%) as the main constituent for an oven-dried sample. All three lipophilic extracts showed moderate antioxidant activities against 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl and 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) with the IC50 values ranging 7.56~17.52 mg/mL and 5.75~9.73 mg/mL, respectively, and no obvious antimicrobial activity was observed for lipophilic extracts. The drying methods affect the chemical profile of black morel, and freeze-drying was favorable for retaining nutrients and morel smell. This is the first report on the aroma and lipophilic extracts of M. importuna grown in China.
