This study examined 233 cut slopes in Gyeongnam region; evaluated hazards and slope conditions involved in the slope; and determined the priority order for reinforcement. The conclusions are summarized in the following. (1) The slopes that need reinforcement or maintenance are 153, accounting for 65.6% of the entire slopes. Slopes with a length of $0{\sim}200m$ account for 70.9%; slopes with a height of $10{\sim}20m$ account for over 50%. (2) Slopes with slope of more than 1:0.5 account for 70.9% of the entire slopes. The steepness of the slope is owing to more rock slopes than soil slopes. (3) The percentages of rock slopes, soil slopes, complex slopes mixed with rocks and soil, and slopes comprised of igneous rocks are 54.4%, 24.9%, 20.7%, and 54.1%, respectively. (4) In the rock area occurred cave-in, plain failure, wedge failure, and overturning failure, in order. Slopes with volcanic rocks are the most unstable, while sedimentary rocks and metamorphic rocks are relatively stable. (5) When the slope height is over 20m, low grade slopes are more than 80%; leading to the conclusion that the higher the slope height is, the more unstable the slope is.

Research was initiated to investigate vegetation characteristics of native ('Pureundle' and 'Sewon') and introduced ('Brilliant' and 'Midnight') Kentucky bluegrass (KB, Poa pratensis L.) varieties by soil-seed applying system on a cut-slope in May 17, 2008. There were no statistic differences observed in soil hardness and soil moisture content while significant differences were observed in surface coverage rate, height and disease occurrence in native and introduced KB varieties. The introduced 'Brilliant' KB was highest in the surface coverage rate from the early period of seeding to August 11, 2008. The surface coverage rate of introduced varieties were high when compared to native varieties in their early growth stage. But native varieties reached to equal surface coverage rate with the introduced varieties when three months after seeding. The height of 'Pureundle' and 'Brilliant' KBs were high compared with Midnight and Sewon KBs. 'Pureundle' and 'Brilliant' KBs were damaged by disease whereas there were no disease occurrence in 'Midnight' and 'Sewon' KBs. Probably, the disease occurrence was close related with the height of KBs not with native and introduced KB varieties. These results indicate that the growth of KB on a cut-slope are statistically affected by varieties in early growth stage of this experiment but reach equal rate between native and introduced KB varieties in three months after seeding. This growth characteristics implies the huge potential of native KB varieties seeding for cut-slope vegetation. Considering that native KB varieties are adapted to a environment and have no risk of causing disturbance to the ecosystem compared to the introduced KB varieties, the use of them as native varieties for a cut-slope vegetation can be increased.

The slope of an open cut tunnel is located above the exit of the Leijia tunnel on the Changgan high-speed railway. During the excavation of the open cut tunnel foundation pit, the slope slipped twice, a large landslide of 92500 m3 formed. The landslide body and unstable slope body not only caused the foundation pit of the open cut tunnel to be buried and the anchor piles to be damaged but also directly threatened the operational safety of the later high-speed railway. Therefore, to study the stability change in the slope of the open cut tunnel under heavy rain and excavation conditions, a 3D numerical calculation model of the slope is carried out by Midas GTS software, the deformation mechanism is analyzed, anti-sliding measures are proposed, and the effectiveness of the anti-sliding measures is analyzed according to the field monitoring results. The results show that when rainfall occurs, rainwater collects in the open cut tunnel area, resulting in a transient saturation zone on the slope on the right side of the open cut tunnel, which reduces the shear strength of the slope soil; the excavation at the slope toe reduces the anti-sliding capacity of the slope toe. Under the combined action of excavation and rainfall, when the soil above the top of the anchor pile is excavated, two potential sliding surfaces are bounded by the top of the excavation area, and the shear outlet is located at the top of the anchor pile. After the excavation of the open cut tunnel, the potential sliding surface is mainly concentrated at the lower part of the downhill area, and the shear outlet moves down to the bottom of the open cut tunnel. Based on the deformation characteristics and the failure mechanism of the landslides, comprehensive control measures, including interim emergency mitigation measures and long-term mitigation measures, are proposed. The field monitoring results further verify the accuracy of the anti-sliding mechanism analysis and the effectiveness of anti-sliding measures.

In the deign of cut and cover tunnel, the structural analysis such as rigid frame analysis has been used for its simplicity and convenience. The structural analysis, however, can not consider the geological and geotechnical factors such as soil arching effect. In this study, the dominant factors influencing the behavior of cut and cover tunnel such as interface element, slope of excavation plane, distance between slope and tunnel lining, and location of slope of covered soil, were investigated by the numerical analysis to develop the analysis technique and design technology. Based on the results, the variation of bending moment, shear stress, axial force and displacements were evaluated and analyzed for each factor.
The information of cut slope in Baekyang Mt. area, Busan is investigated in order to construct the Slope Management System in Urban Area. The slope inspection sheet is made to record the characteristics for cut slopes, and that is capable to be inputted slope information systematically. The cut slopes in Baekyang Mt. area are consisting of 103 slopes. Most of the cut slopes are constructed in cutting slope and retaining wall (CR). The school is mostly distributed adjacent to cut slopes. The average traverse of cut slopes is approximately 122m, and the average height is approximately 18m. The slopes combined with soil and rock are mostly distributed. The retaining wall was installed in the toe part of cut slope in order to increase the slope stability, and the additional reinforcement methods including the anchor, drainage, preventing rock fall, shotcrete and vegetation were installed in the walls and slopes.

We have analyzed the stability for cut-slopes at main street 3-2 line section in Pa-ju local industrial complex. After studying an additional boring test, laboratory test and face mapping etc., we have determined the extent of reinforcement, slope inclinations and soil strength parameter from the analysis of test results. After changing the inclination of slopes for ground limit and carrying out the analysis of slope stability, we applied the Mass Nailing Method to the site because of need for reinforcement to soil and weathered rock slopes. In slope for soft and hard rock sections, we also reinforced the sections that are difficult to obtain the safety without reinforcement in alteration zone.
Existing cut-and-cover tunnels are designed regardless of cut-slope under the assumption that the overburden weight of backfill soil acts on tunnel arch and the earth pressure at rest acts on tunnel walls. However, actual earth pressures acting on the tunnel lining depend on open-cut size composed of cut-slope and cut-width, and thus the tunnel lining shows a different structural behavior. This study investigated the effect of cut-slope on structural behavior of the cut-and-cover tunnel lining as follows; Firstly, a comprehensive numerical analysis method using FLAC2D code was used and verified by field measurements of tunnel profile. Secondly, based on the verified numerical analysis technique, earth pressure acting on the lining, and displacement and sectional force developed on the lining were estimated with various shapes of cut-slopes$30^{\circ}\;, 456{\circ},\; 60^{\circ},\; and\;75^{\circ}%). Numerical analysis results indicate that the steeper cut-slope shows the more displacement and moment of the tunnel lining.
An instrumentation system is designed to observe the behavior of slope soil and stabilizing piles during heavy rains. Inclinometers, standpipe piezometers and strain gages are installed into a cut slope reinforced by a row .of piles for an apartment. The horizontal deflection and bending stress developed on the piles can be measured, respectively, by the inclinometers and strain gages installed in piles, while the horizontal deformation of the slope soil can be measured by the inclinometer installed in the soil across the open space between piles. The groundwater level doss not grow so sensitively during heavy rain. The behavior of piles and slope is 서footed by the wetting front, since the driving force of slope increases with the weight of slope soil above the wetting front. The stabilizing piles and the slope soil show elastic behavior during heavy rain.
The frost heave process from repeated freezing and thawing actions in winter on forest road cut-slopes is important for forest road maintenance and management. This study investigated the damages of the forest heave process on forest road cut-slopes by measuring the changes in the road-cut surface elevation and sediment production and by conducting vegetation surveys which were aimed at providing information for forest road maintenance plans. The temperature and humidity differences were determined between the north and south cut-slopes. T-test showed that the north slope had a lower temperature and humidity than that of the south slope. Field observations also confirmed frozen soils on the north slopes, indicating that the north slopes are susceptible to frost heave. Sediment was converted to dry weight per unit area ($g/m^2$). T-test showed that the north slope produced more sediment than that of the south slope. The study confirmed that more frost heave occurred on the north cut-slopes than on the south cut-slopes. Vegetation surveys were conducted on five cut-slope plots. Considering the dominant species found above the cut-slopes, vegetations in all the plots are expected to succeed to pine and oak in the future. The dominant species appearing on the cut-slopes of the study area were exotic species because the elapsed time of the site was only 2 - 4 years.

In case heavy rainfall is a key factor of slope failure, the failure zone is usually developed within the depth of 3~5m from the ground surface regardless of the location of the watertable. If rainfall is taken into consideration, it is general that the slope stability analysis is carried out under the assumption that the cut slope is saturated to the slope surface or the watertable elevates to a certain height so that ${\gamma}_{sat}$, the unit weight of saturated soil, is used. However, the analysis method mentioned above can't exactly simulate the variation of pore water pressure in the slope and yields different failure shape. The applicability of slope stability analysis method considering the distribution of pore water pressure within the slope with heavy rainfalls, was checked out after the stability analysis of a lage-scale cut slope in a highway construction site, where surface failure occurred with heavy rainfalls. An appropriate slope stabilization method is proposed on the base of the outcome of the analysis.
