Behavior of the insecticide imidacloprid in crucian carp (Carassius auratus L.) and its toxic effects on organs (살충제 imidacloprid의 붕어(Carassius auratus L.)중 행적 및 장기에 대한 독성)

  • In order to elucidate the behavior of the insecticide imidacloprid (1-(6-chloro-3-pyridylmethyl)-N-nitroimidazolidin-2-ylideneamine) in crucian carp (Carassius auratus L.) and its effects on the internal organs of crucian carp, the crucian carps were exposed to [$^{14}C$]imidacloprid at a predicted environmental concentration of 0.064 mg/L for 4 days. Imidacloprid in water was absorbed into crucian carps to reach the maximum concentration at 2 days after exposure. Unknown major metabolite and imidacloprid urea, minor metabolite, were detected in test water. The amounts of the [$^{14}C$]imidacloprid and its metabolites absorbed in gall were much higher than those in the other parts, strongly suggesting that biliary excretion involving enterohepatic recirculation could be an import route for the elimination of imidacloprid absorbed in crucian carps. Meanwhile, no toxic effects of imidacloprid on liver and kidney as well as the genital organs such as testis and ovary were observed by microscopic inspection.

  • 기후변화로 인한 가뭄 및 홍수 등의 이상 현상은 유역의 수자원에 미치는 영향이 크기 때문에 이에 대한 예측 및 적응방안을 마련하는 부분이 대두되고 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 유역의 수자원 관리를 위하여 단위유역에서의 수자원 취약성을 평가하고자 하였다. 평가 지표는 기후 및 사회 경제 환경적 측면을 고려하여 선정하였으며, 취약성 정의에 따라 수량 및 수질/수생태에 대하여 각각 노출, 민감도, 적응능력으로 구성하였다. 이후 다기준 의사결정기법(Multi-criteria Decision Making, MCDM) 중 TOPSIS(Technique for Order Performance by Similarity to Ideal Solution)를 적용하여 각각의 통합 취약성을 도출하였다. 지표 자료는 2010년을 기준으로 국가 통계 자료를 통해 수집하였으며, 유출량과 증발산량 자료는 준분포형 장기유출모형인 SWAT(Soil and Water Assessment Tool) 모형의 모의 자료(2005~2014)를 활용하였다. 또한, 지표에 대한 가중치는 전문가 설문조사를 통해 산정한 주관적 가중치(Subjective weight)와 수집된 자료를 통하여 산정한 객관적 가중치(Objective weight)로 구분하여 적용하였다. 인구 및 산업의 밀집도가 높은 한강권역에 대하여 표준단위유역(평균 $145km^2$)의 취약성을 평가하였으며, 각각의 취약성 우선 순위를 확인하였다. 수량 취약성의 경우에는 경기 강원북부와 충정도 일부 지역이 높은 것으로 나타났으며, 수질/수생태는 수도권 등 비교적 하류에 위치한 지역의 취약성 순위가 좀 더 높았다. 가중치 적용 방법에 따른 공간분포의 차이는 수질/수생태 취약성이 더 크게 나타나는 것을 확인할 수 있었다.

Ecological Characteristics of Natural Habits of Deutzia paniculata, a Rare and Endemic Woody Species in Korea

  • Deutzia paniculata Nakai, a rare and endemic plant, has limited distribution throughout the North and South Gyeongsang provinces of South Korea. The D. paniculata community grows mostly on the stony slopes of forests, valley edges, and rock layers at 250-960 m in altitude, where deciduous trees are dominant and high humidity is maintained. Correlation analysis of vegetation and environmental factors found that the Walter's dogwood-mulberry community was correlated with soil acidity (pH). Whilst the queritron community had correlations with distance from the valley, rock rate and slope. The natural habitat of the Palgongsan Mountain in Daegu is known to have high genetic diversity, had eight D. paniculata individuals recorded from 2014 to 2018, and 12 individuals recorded in 2020 (new individuals due to a newly created space within the herbaceous layer caused by grass mowing works), it is therefore unlikely that the community would perish unless there was an artificial disturbance. To conserve the natural habitats of D. paniculata, oppression by Sasa borealis, damage, increase in crown density of the upper layer, overexploitation, and absence of seedlings should be carefully investigated. In addition, response measures should also be established and the impact on seed fullness and the reproductive characteristics of D. paniculata recorded. To restore declined genetic diversity, individuals from high genetic diversity regions, such as Palgongsan Mountain, should be artificially transplanted.

The effects of additive biomaterials and their mixed-ratios in growing medium on the growth of Quercus serrata container seedlings

  • The materials of artificial soils in the production process of container seedlings have a great influence on plant growth. Peat moss, vermiculite, and perlite have been used as major components of artificial soils for many years; however, they could decrease carbon fixation carried out by the soil and cause environmental problems such as a change in the water quality. Thus, environmental friendly materials to replace them must be developed. The purpose of this study was to verify the optimum additive materials of artificial soils and their mixed ratios for the growth and seedling quality index (SQI) of Quercus serrata. Rice husk, mushroom sawdust, and pine bark were each used as an additive material and mixed into the growth medium at 10% and 20% of the total volume. There was no significant difference in the height growth of Q. serrata. The 20% mushroom sawdust decreased the root collar diameter by 23.4% compared to the control. The total dry weight was highest with the 10% rice husk and was significantly lower by 10.3% for the 20% mushroom sawdust compared to the control. Additionally, the SQI for all the treatments showed no tendency to increase compared with the control. Thus, this study showed the possibility of recycling biomaterials from agriculture and forest for seedling production. This method could reduce environmental problems and help eco-friendly nurseries to achieve a carbon negative impact by the recycling of by-products.

Operational Status of Urban Gardens to Derive Necessary Items of Public Urban Garden Management Guidelines

  • The purpose of this study was to understand the current status of education and programs and to identify the items that urban residents need most for garden management. First of all, there were 45 sites (40.5%) with gardens operated by city and county local governments nationwide, and 41(91.1%) of them had dedicated staff (1.8 persons on average). The average area of gardens was 18,623 m2, garden area per person was 20.27m2, the average number of participants was 683, and the average period of use was 8.69 months. In addition to gardening activities, 14 (31.1%) out of 45 sites were operating small group meetings, with an average of 2.29 meetings and 67 participants. In the satisfaction survey after gardening activities, 88.9% of 18 sites were satisfied. According to the questionnaire about education and programs related to garden users, an average of four sessions were conducted per education. In terms of education, the contents were in the following order: basic education on garden cultivation (33.9%) > prior education on garden operation (28.9%) > pest control (14.0%) > eco-friendly management (11.6%) > pesticides and Positive List System (9.9%) > others (1.7%). Over 95% of the respondents were generally satisfied. Regarding the perception survey on which items are needed to develop garden management guidelines, the most necessary items were in the order of crop management (38.7%) > public garden etiquettes among users (27.9%) > pest control (14.4%) > weed management (13.5%) > activities using harvest (5.4%). The contents that are to be included in the guidelines were in the order of garden planning and crop selection (17.2%) > cultivation techniques and schedule (16.5%) > pest and soil management (15.7%) > introduction of garden crops and gardening models (12.7%) > garden etiquettes (10.7%). In establishing urban garden management plans by region, the results will have high utility value as the basic data for continuous garden operation by setting a direction that meets the regional characteristics as well as the needs of urban residents.

Pathogenicity of Bacillus Strains to Cotton Seedlings and Their Effects on Some Biochemical Components of the Infected Seedlings

  • Pathogenicity of eight Bacillus strains to seedlings of four cotton cultivars was evaluated under greenhouse conditions. Each of the tested cultivars was individually treated with powdered inoculum of each bacterial strain. Untreated seeds were planted as control treatments in autoclaved soil. Effects of the tested strains on levels and activities of some biochemical components of the infected seedlings were also assayed. The biochemical components included total soluble sugars, total soluble proteins, total free amino acids, peroxidase, polyphenol oxidase, phenols, and lipid peroxidation. ANOVA showed that Bacillus strain (B) was a very highly significant source of variation in damping-off and dry weight. Cotton cultivar (V) was a nonsignificant source of variation in damping-off while it was a significant source of variation in dry weight. B × V interaction was a significant source of variation in damping-off and a nonsignificant source of variation in dry weight. Bacillus strain was the most important source of variation as it accounted for 59.36 and 64.99% of the explained (model) variation in damping-off and dry weight, respectively. The lack of significant correlation between levels and activities of the assayed biochemical components and incidence of damping-off clearly demonstrated that these biochemical components were not involved in the pathogenicity of the tested strains. Therefore, it was hypothesized that the pathogenicity of the tested strains could be due to the effect of cell wall degrading enzymes of pathogenic toxins. Based on the results of the present study, Bacillus strains should be considered in studying the etiology of cotton seedling damping-off.

Identification and classification of pathogenic Fusarium isolates from cultivated Korean cucurbit plants

  • Fusarium wilt disease caused by Fusarium species is a major problem affecting cultivated cucurbit plants worldwide. Fusarium species are well-known soil-borne pathogenic fungi that cause Fusarium wilt disease in several cucurbit plants. In this study, we aimed to identify and classify pathogenic Fusarium species from cultivated Korean cucurbit plants, specifically watermelon and cucumber. Thirty-six Fusarium isolates from different regions of Korea were obtained from the National Institute of Horticulture and Herbal Science Germplasm collection. Each isolate was morphologically and molecularly identified using an internal transcribed spacer of ribosomal DNA, elongation factor-1α, and the beta-tubulin gene marker sequence. Fusarium species that infect the cucurbit plant family could be divided into three groups: Fusarium oxysporum (F. oxysporum), Fusarium solani (F. solani), and Fusarium equiseti (F. equieti). Among the 36 isolates examined, six were non-pathogenic (F. equiseti: 15-127, F. oxysporum: 14-129, 17-557, 17-559, 18-369, F. solani: 12-155), whereas 30 isolates were pathogenic. Five of the F. solani isolates (11-117, 14-130, 17-554, 17-555, 17-556) were found to be highly pathogenic to both watermelon and cucumber plants, posing a great threat to cucurbit production in Korea. The identification of several isolates of F. equiseti and F. oxysporum, which are both highly pathogenic to bottle gourd, may indicate waning resistance to Fusarium species infection.

Performance of a Chimney Drain in Reinforced Earth Wall for Reduction of Pore Water Pressure During Rainfall - a Numerical Investigation (보강토 옹벽에 적용되는 연직 배수시스템의 강우시 수압 저감 효과 - 수치해석 연구)

  • This study is concernsed with the effect of a chimney drainage system installed at the back of reinforced soil block on preventing the pore water pressure development. A series of finite-element analyses based on transient seepage analysis were performed for a number of cases with different patterns of the chimney drainage system. The results were thoroughly analyzed to get insight into the mechanism of pore water pressure reduction effect of the chimney drainage system. It is shown that a vertical drainage system installed at the back of reinforced zone can be an effective means of maintaining the wall stability during rainfall by preventing pore pressure increase in the reinforced as well as the backfill zones. Also shown is that the optimum height of the chimney drain is 50% of the wall height. Practical implications of the findings were discussed.

Numerical Investigation on the Stability of Reinforced Earth Wall during Rainfall (강우시 보강토 옹벽의 안정성에 관한 수치 해석 연구)

  • This paper presents the results of numerical investigation on the stability of reinforced earth wall during rainfall. A series of limit-equilibrium based slope stability analyses within the framework of unsaturated shear strength, coupled with transient seepage analyses, were conducted with due consideration of rainfall characteristics in Korea. It is shown that the factor of safety of the reinforced wall during rainfall decreases with time due to decreases in the suction in the reinforced as well as retained zones. Also revealed is that the decrease in the factor of safety depends not only on the backfill soil type but also on the rainfall characteristics. Practical implications of the findings were discussed.

A Study on the Public Interest Role of the Detective Industry for Music Copyright Protection (음악저작권 보호를 위한 탐정산업의 공익적 역할 연구)

  • In modern times, damage caused by the spread of the Internet has become very diverse. In particular, due to the craze of K-pop since 2008, the damage caused by copyright infringement in the domestic and international music markets has become the biggest problem in the Internet market. However, the manpower of the police and copyright protection agencies to solve these increasingly intelligent crimes is insufficient. Therefore, we are trying to find out the role of the public interest detective as a supplementary force for the public authority and as a substitute for the copyright protection agency that can provide legitimate help for victims in the prevention of music copyright infringement and disputes. For this study, first, the concept and types of music copyright, the concept of public interest detectives, the current status and system of music copyright were identified, and the role of detectives for music copyright protection was explored through system operation and status analysis of protection agencies and literature review. Through the results of this study, it is hoped that the role of a professional detective in the public interest dimension of music copyright protection can be a good soil for the development of the detective industry in the future.
