The aim of this study was to analyse the cost-benefit-ratio of a soil remediation project. The target of the study was the 'Altablagerung Osnabrueck-Wueste' the largest inhabited former landfill site in Germany. The determination of benefit resulting from the soil remediation was quantified with the help of willingness-to-pay(WTP) analysis (contingent valuation method, CVM). 400 households participated in the survey. The average WTP was 6.5 Euro per household per month or 78 Euro per house-hold per year. The projected benefit generated by the remediation (consumer value) for the population in the landfill area was determined to be 0.7 million Euro per year. Factors which influence the will-ingness to pay were evaluated. The most important factors were age, garden use and the prevailing concern about personal health. A computation of the cost-benefit relationship was made on the basis of three different scenarios, which differed in terms of the projected benefits. Finally the economical efficiency of the project was determined. With a projection of 18 years and upwards the remediation of the soil is economically worthwhile.
After kaolin clay was compulsorily contaminated by Sr$^{2+}$ solution, the remediation characteristics by electrokinetic method were analyzed. Meanwhile, the numerical code for analysis of electrokinetic migration was developed for modelling of the soil remediation. Experimental results are as follows After 3 day remidiation under 40 voltage, the front part of experimental cell was almost decontaminated, but the behind part didn't almost be decontaminated. Accordingly, the total remediation ratio of Sr$^{2+}$ from cell soil was about 42.6 %. Also, the total Sr$^{2+}$ remediation ratio from cell soil was about 84.8 % after 6 days, and about 97.1 % after 7 days. Meanwhile, the values calculated by the developed code almost agreed with experimental values.ues.
Various remediation methods have been applied to clean soils contaminated with pollutants. They remove contaminants from the soils by utilizing physicochemical, biological, and thermal processes and can satisfy soil remediation standards within a limited time; however, they also have an effect on the biological functions of soils by changing soil properties. In this study, changes of the biological properties of soils before and after treatment with three frequently used remediation methods-soil washing, land farming, and thermal desorption-were monitored to investigate the effects of remediation methods on soil biological functions. Total microbial number and soil enzyme activities, germination rate and growth of Brassica juncea, biomass change of Eisenia andrei were examined the effects on soil microorganisms, plant, and soil organisms, respectively. After soil washing, the germination rate of Brassica juncea increased but the above-ground growth and total microbial number decreased. Dehydrogenase activity, germination rate and above-ground growth increased in both land farming and thermal desorption treated soil. Although the growth of Eisenia andrei in thermal desorption treated soil was higher than any other treatment, it was still lower than that in non-contaminated soil. These results show that the remediation processes used to clean contaminated soil also affect soil biological functions. To utilize the cleaned soil for healthy and more value-added purposes, soil improvement and process development are needed.

We studied the on-site treatment of soil contaminated by heavy metals and petroleum was tested using relocatable soil washing equipment for greater remediation efficiency. Different combinations of pH and solid/liquid ratio were tested to determine the optimum balance, settling on values of 5 and 1:2, respectively. Next, soils containing Pb, Hg, and petroleum were further tested to assess the optimum number of washing cycles. The remediation efficiency of Pb and Hg in soil contaminated solely by heavy metals was 90.1% and 86.4% after three and two washings, respectively. The remediation efficiency of petroleum in soil contaminated solely by petroleum was 98.8% after one washing. When soil contaminated by both heavy metals and petroleum was cleaned, up to 91.0% of Pb, 86.9% of Hg, and 96.1% of petroleum was removed after two, one, and one washings, respectively. We conducted all remediation efficiencies and concentration reductions satisfied the standard threshold for soil contamination in South Korea.
There are a number of approaches to in situ remediation that are used at contaminated sites for removing contaminants from the contaminated zone without excavating the soil. These include soil flushing, dual phase extraction, and soil vapor extraction. Of these techniques, soil flushing is the focus of the investigation in this paper. The concept of using prefabricated vertical drains(PVDs) for remediation of contaminated sites with fine-grained soils is examined. The PVD system is used to shorten the drainage path or the groundwater flow and promote subsurface liquid movement expediting the soil flushing process. The use of PVDs in the current state of practice has been limited to soil improvement. The use of PVDs under vacuum conditions is investigated using sample soil consisting of silty sand.
In this study, mine tailing buffer zone in cathode was used to overcome precipitation of heavy metals that reducing remediation efficiency during electrokinetic remediation. Test results showed that heavy metal transportation affected by initial soil pH which was verified through traditional test and enhanced test with two type of soils. With mine tailing enhanced method 39% of extraction rate was achieved in surface soil and significant transportation trend was observed in deep soil.
Germany as a densely populated and heavily industrialised country has a long and broad experience in handling contaminated sites. With this presentation we want to describe some main aspects of the soil protection policies and the remediation of contaminated sites in Germany. Due to the history of working on contaminated sites in Germany the Federal Soil Protection Act came into force in 1998. A lot of programmes and network in Germany and in Europe, funded by the State or the European Union, helped developing new measures and techniques for remediation and also for implementing regulations for the involved authorities. Questions like 'who is responsible?' and 'who has to pay for measurements and the remediation?' became more and more important. In the near future there will be an official European Soil Protection Policy (is expected in June 2004). Besides the contaminated sites also other soil protection policies as 'Reducing the land consumption' are pursued and an indicator is developed.and an indicator is developed.
This study examined the possibility of reutilization of soil reclaimed from contaminated sites after completing remediation. The current status of soil remediation methods in Korea was reviewed and physicochemical properties of soil before and after remediation processes were examined to access the recycling possibility of reclaimed soils based on Recycling Aggregate Quality Standard. The most commonly practiced soil remediation techniques are soil washing, land farming, and thermal desorption. These techniques tend to deteriorate various soil properties including electrical conductivity(EC), organic matter content(OM), available P2O5, and cation exchange capacity(CEC). Evaluation of the properties of soil retrieved after each remediation process indicated soil washing may yield the most suitable soil for use as a filling, covering, back-filling, road pavement, and blocking materials, In addition, the soils reclaimed from land farming and thermal desorption have potential utility as a filling, covering and road pavement materials.
This study applied EK method to remediate contaminated soil by heavy metal(Pb), tried to increase the efficiency of remediation using zeolite as enhanced EK remediation method to overcome the limit of traditional EK remediation method. Adsorption tests on Pb were conducted to apply the EK extraction and test conditions which contained the electrode reversal, operating time were established. After tests, lead-ions were transported into the specific position of zeolite by EK phenomena, then the immobilization of lead-ions at zeolite was developed. Based on these tests, the efficiency of remediation is different with its test conditions. In addition, the efficiency of remediation was improved dramatically by adding zeolite without electrode reversal and satisfied TCLP regulation of EPA in USA through the whole sample range. Finally, absorption and immobilization capacity of zeolite were proved its excellence and confirmed the possibility of application as enhanced EK remediation method.
After kaolin clay was compulsorily contaminated with Co$^{2+}$ion, the remediation characteristics by electrokinetic method were analyzed. Ethanoic buffer was injected in the soil column and $CH_3$COOH was continuously inputted in cathode reservoir to restrain the pH elevation. Since pH of the cathode side of the soil column was 4.0 at initial and was restrained by 6.5 at 43.6 hours, Precipitation, Co(OH)$_2$, was not formed in the column. Effluent rate increased with time passage and remediation in the column in initial time was mainly controlled by ion migration. 13.1% of total in the soil column was remediated in 10 hours, and the 6.8% of total in 20.8 hours, and the 71.7% of total in 43.6 hours, and the 94.6% of total in 43.6 hours. Meanwhile, the residual concentrations in the column calculated by the developed model were similar to those by experiment.t.
