This paper presents a numerical study of pile force distribution in a pile group foundation subjected to vertical load and large moment. The physical modeling of a pile foundation for a wind turbine is analyzed using 3D finite element software, PLAXIS 3D. The soil profile consists of several clay layers, which are modeled as Mohr-Coulomb material in an undrained condition. The piles in the pile group foundation are modeled as special elements called embedded pile elements. To model the problem of a pile group foundation, a small gap is created between the pile cap and underlying soil. The pile cap is modeled as a rigid plate element connected to each pile by a hinge. As a result, applied vertical load and large moment are transferred only to piles without any load sharing to underlying soil. Results of the study focus on pile load distribution for the square shape of a pile group foundation. Mathematical expression is proposed to describe pile force distribution for the cases of vertical load and large moment and purely vertical load.
The study deals with physical modeling of a typical building frame resting on pile raft foundation and embedded in cohesive soil mass using finite element based software ETABS. Both- the elements of superstructure and substructure (i.e., foundation) including soil is assumed to remain in elastic state at all the time. The raft is modelled as a thin plate and the pile and soils are treated as interactive springs. Both- the resistance of the piles as well as that of raft base - are incorporated into the model. Interactions between raft-soil-pile are computed. The proposed method makes it possible to solve the problems of uniformly and large non-uniformly arranged piled rafts in a time saving way using finite element based software ETABS. The effect of the various parameters of the pile raft foundation such as thickness of raft and pile diameter is evaluated on the response of superstructure. The response included the displacement at the top of the frame and bending moment in columns. The soil-structure interaction effect is found to increase displacement and increase the absolute maximum positive and negative moments. The effect of the soil- structure interaction is observed to be significant for the type of foundation and soil considered in the present study.

Static formulae based on limiting equilibrium theories often provide misleading predictions of pile bearing capacity in cohesionless soils due to the incorrect basic assumptions or oversimplification of actual soil conditions. Soil conditions prior to pile driving are significantly changed after pile installation and imposition of high stress levels. Therefore soi1 parameters at failure rather than those obtained at initial conditions should be used in application of static formulae. In this research. model pile test data were analyzed and compared with the predicted values obtained from the various static formulae. The results showed that the proper choice of soil parameters remarkably improve the reliability of static formulae.
The pilot scale biopile system was designed and operated for evaluation of bioremediation efficiency for petroleum contaminated soil. The pilot scale biopile consisted of biopile dome, aeration system and monitoring system and two biopiles were operated with nutrients and inoculum for more 100 days. The test pile A and B were analyzed with regard to pH, total carbon contents, water contents, nutrients (N, P) and TPH. The initial TPH concentrations for pile A and pile B were about 10,000 mg/kg and 2,300 mg/kg, respectively. After 100 days, the TPH contents decreased about 70% in the pile A and 30% in the pile B. Also, n-$C_{17}$/pristane and n-$C_{18}$/phytane ratios in all pile were significantly changed. The microbial densities in the pile A was increased by approximately $10^7$ CFU/g-soil~$10^8$ CFU/g-soil, but there was almost no changed in the pile B. The average biodegradation rates were calculated about 66.8 mg/kg-day in the pile A and 10.9 mg/kg-day in the pile B. Over the course of operation period, pile temperature was considered the major limiting factor for the efficiency of all biopiles.
Micropiled raft has been used to support the existing and new structures or to provide the seismic reinforcement of foundation systems. Recently, research on micropile or micropiled raft has been actively conducted as the usage of micropile has increased, and the reinforcement effect of pile for the raft, the pile installation methods, and methods for calculating the bearing capacity of micropiled raft have been proposed. In addition, existing research results show that the behavior of this foundation system is different depending on the pile conditions and can be greatly influenced by the characteristics of the upper or lower ground depending on the conditions of pile. In other words, considering that the micropile is a friction pile, it can be predicted that the reinforcing effect of micropile for the raft and the bearing capacity of micropiled raft may depend on the cohesion of upper soil layer depending on the pile conditions. However, existing studies have limitations in that they were conducted without taking this into account. However, existing studies have limitations as they have been conducted without considering these characteristics. Accordingly, this study investigated the reinforcing effect of micropile and the bearing characteristics of micropiled raft by varying the cohesion of upper soil layer and the stiffness of pile which affect the behavior of micropiled raft. In this results, the reinforcing effect of micropile on the raft also increased as the cohesion of soil layer increased, but the reinforcing effect of pile was more effective in ground conditions with decreased the cohesion. In addition, the relationship between the axial stiffness of micropile and the bearing capacity of micropiled raft was found to be a logarithmic linear relationship. It was found that the reinforcing effect of micropile can increase the bearing capacity of raft by 1.33~ 3.72 times depending on the cohesion of soil layer and the rigidity of pile.
Ground motions recorded in near-fault sites, where the rupture propagates toward the site, are significantly different from those observed in far-fault regions. In this research, finite element modeling is used to investigate the effect of pile cap stiffness on the seismic response of soil-pile-structure systems under near-fault ground motions. The Von Wolffersdorff hypoplastic model with the intergranular strain concept is applied for modeling of granular soil (sand) and the behavior of structure is considered to be non-linear. Eight fault-normal near-field ground motion records, recorded on rock, are applied to the model. The numerical method developed is verified by comparing the results with an experimental test (shaking table test) for a soil-pile-structure system. The results, obtained from finite element modeling under near-fault ground motions, show that when the value of cap stiffness increases, the drift ratio of the structure decreases, whereas the pile relative displacement increases. Also, the residual deformations in the piles are due to the non-linear behavior of soil around the piles.

This paper discusses the lateral behavior of single and group piles in homogeneous and non-homogeneous(two layered) soil. In the single pile, the model tests were conducted to investigate the effects on ratio of lower layer height to embedded pile length, ratio of soil modules of upper layer to lower layer, boundary rendition of pile head and tip, embedded pile length, pile construction condition, ground condition with saturate and moisture state in Nak-Dong river sand. Also, in the group pile, the model tests were to investigate the effects on spacing-to-diameter ratio of pile, pile array, ratio of pile spacing, boundary condition of pile head and tip, eccentric load and ground condition. The maximum bending moment and deflection induced in active piles were found to be highly dependent on the relative density, pile construction condition, boundary condition of pile head and tip. Based on the results obtained, it was found that the decrease of lateral bearing capacity in saturated sand was in the range of 31% - 53% as compared with the case of dry sand. Also, in the group pile, a spacing-to-diameter of 6.0 seems to be large enough to eliminate the group effect for the case of relative density of 61.8%, and 32.8%, and then each pile in such a case behaves essentially the same as a single pile. In this study, the program is developed by using the modified Chang method which used p - y method and the exact solution of governing equation of pile and it can be used to calculate the deflection, bending moment and soil reaction with FDM in non-homogeneous soil. In comparing the modified Chang method with field test results, the predict results shows better agreement with measured results in field tests.
Appropriate assessment of lateral capacity of pile foundation is known to be a complex problem involving soil-structure interaction. Having reviewed the available methods in brief, relative paucity of simple and rational technique to evaluate lateral capacity of pile in layered soil is identified. In this context, two efficient approaches for the assessment of lateral capacity of short pile embedded in bi-layer cohesive deposit is developed. It is presumed that the allowable lateral capacity of short pile is generally dictated by the permissible lateral displacement within which pile-soil system may be assumed to be elastic. The applicability of the scheme, depicted through illustration, is believed to be of ample help at least for practical purpose.
In this paper, a hybrid boundary element technique is implemented to analyze nonlinear transient pile soil interaction in Gibson type nonhomeogenous soil. Inelastic modeling of soil media is presented by introducing a rational approximation to the continuum with nonlinear interface springs along the piles. Modified $\ddot{O}$zdemir's nonlinear model is implemented and systems of equations are coupled at interfaces for piles and pile groups. Linear beam column finite elements are used to model the piles and the resulting governing equations are solved using an implicit integration scheme. By enforcing displacement equilibrium conditions at each time step, a system of equations is generated which yields the solution. A numerical example is performed to investigate the effects of nonlinearity on the pile soil interaction.

In this study, a numerical analysis for soil-pile interaction systems in multi-layered half planes under a forced vibration is presented. The soil-pile interaction system is divided into two parts, so called near field and far field. The near field soil using finite elements and piles using beam elements are modeled. The far field soil media is implemented using boundary elements those can automatically satisfy the condition of wave radiation. These two fields are numerically coupled by imposing displacement compatibility condition at the interface between the near field and the far field. For the verification, the forced vibration test was simulated and the response under horizontal and vertical harmonic loads at the pile cap in the layered half plane was determined. The results are compared to the theoretical and experimental results of the literatures to verify the proposed soil-pile interaction analysis formulation.
