  • A taxonomic study of the marine sponges was conducted with the materials collected from Gageodo Island (Sohuksando), Korea from August 1999 to July 2001. The sponges were identified into 35 species, 23 genera, 16 families, six orders, two subclasses and a class. Among them, two of Polymastia murrayi Burton, 1959 and Clathria (Thalysias) spicata Gray, 1924, are newly recorded to Korean fauna, and Stylocordyla korenna n. sp. is new to science.

  • To determine the fish fauna and their characteristics of the Sohuksando Island located in the South - Western Sea of Korea, samples were collected from June 1993 to August 1995. 128 species belonging to 59 families and 97 genera were identified. Among them the order Perciformes were about 42.2% of total species, as 54 species belonging to 27 families and 44 genera, and order Scorpaeniformes, 19.5%, as 25 species belonging to 8 families and 15 genera. Besides of these groups, order Pleuronectiformes were about 12.5%, as 16 species belonging to 5 families and 13 genera, and order Tetraodontiformes, 6.3%, as 8 species belonging to 3 families and 4 genera. Cypselurus unicolor, Siganus canaliculutus and Tarphops elegans from Sohuksando Island are reported here as first record species from Korea. The unidentified species were Raja sp., Scorpaenopsis sp., Sebastes sp., Entomacrodus sp. and Psettodes sp.. The economic fishes of this area were Raja kenojei, Sebastes schlegeli, Sebastes thompsoni, Lateolabrax japonicus, Nibea albiflora, Argyrosomus argentatus, Pseudosciaena poliactis, Miichthys miiuy, Mugil cephalus, Paralichthys olivaceus, Cynoglossus joyneri and Cynoglossus semilaevis.

  • Two new species of the genus Psammocinia (Dictyoceratida, Irciniidae), P. lobatus and P. rubra, are described from Gageodo Island (Sohuksando Island)and Jejudo Island, Korea. Psammocinia lobatus is most closely related to P. wandoensis Sim and Lee in growth form. However, it can be distinguished by its sharp conules and primary and secondary fibres, lightly cored with detritus. Psammocinia rubra is readily distinguished from the other described Psammocinia species by the blunt conules, reddish brown color of specimen, brown color of fibres and filaments, secondary web between adjacent primary fibres and filament coated with brown granules.

  • Two new species of the genus Stelletta (Astrophorida: Ancorinidae), S. spinulosa n. sp. and S. calyx n. sp., are described from the waters around Gageodo Island (Sohuksando) and Ulleungdo Island, Korea. S. spinulosa n. sp. is similar to S. crassispicula (Sollas, 1886) in the feature of entire animal, but differs from it in the shape of orthotriaene and the form and size of oxyasters. S. calyx n. sp. resembles to S. crater Dendy, 1924 in the shape of sponge, but the new species has four size categories of oxyaster whereas S. carter has no oxyaster.

  • Two new species of the genus Psammocinia (Dictyoceratida, Irciniidae), P. bergquisti n. sp. and P. gageoensis n. sp., are described from Gageodo Island (Sohuksando Island), Korea. P. bergquisti n. sp. is characterized by the thumb like appearance and secondary fibre which makes a broad plate or secondary web while other known species in Psammocinia has many narrow and simple secondary fibres. P. gageoensis n. sp. is very similar to P. mosulpia Sim 1998 in shape, but primary fibre of the new species has more complex fascicles and it is difficult to see the detritus in the fibre. The primary fibre of this new species is cored with the smaller sand than that of P. mosulpia.

  • The abnormal low water temperature phenomenon of the Yellow Sea Bottom Cold Water in summer, 1981 is studied on the basis of the oceanographical data collected by the National Fisheries University of Pusan in July, 1981 and Fisheries Research and Development Agency of Korea from 1960 to 1981 and meteorological data within the same 22 years. In winter, 1980 the northwesterly monsoon was vary predominant and the air temperature was lower than that of mean year by 1∼8$^{\circ}C$ and also the surface temperature was lower 1∼3$^{\circ}C$. And then the temperature of the Yellow Sea Bottom Cold Water in summer, 1981 became lower 2∼3$^{\circ}C$ than that of mean year and the influence of this cold water was extended to about 50 miles off the coast of Cheju Island. Comparing with mean year, the water temperature at 30m depth in February, 1981 was lower by 1∼2$^{\circ}C$ in entire regions except near sea of Sohuksando and at 50m depth in August, 1981, it was lower by about 3.5$^{\circ}C$. Particularly, the offshore of Hongdo shower value of 5$^{\circ}C$ than that of mean year. It was found that the abnormal low water temperature phenomenon of Yellow Sea Bottom Cold Water in summer, 1981 resulted from the sea surface cooling by the predominant northwestly monsoon and abnormally low air temperature in winter, 1980.
