Specimens of five softwood species were heat-treated at three temperature levels of $170^{\circ}C$, $190^{\circ}C$ and $210^{\circ}C$. Their FSP's were measured by the volumetric Swelling Method. Within a species the FSP decreases as the temperature of heat treatment increases. The FSP's of the controls range from 21.0% to 32.5%, while those of the specimens heat-treated at $210^{\circ}C$ from 18.7% to 35.3%. There was no difference of basic density between the heat-treated and control specimens.

This study was carried out to investigate the propagation methods of the Rhododendron micranthum as a landscape plant The results obtained are as follows : 1. The optimum temperature for seed germination was $20^{\circ}C$, and the seed germination needs light. 2. GA and thiourea did not affect the seed germination under light, but GA gad substitutive effect. 3. 87% and over of germination rates were obtained in room temperature and $5^{\circ}C$ dry storages. 4. The rooting rate was high on sandy loam, vermiculite, and vermiculite 50%+sand 50%, at softwood and hardwood cutting(hardwood ; 45~48%, softwood ; 45~48%). 5. The significant effects on rooting were found with the treatment of NAA 500~2000ppm.
This study developed the Korean roundwood import prediction model using vector autoregressive (VAR) method. The roundwood was divided into softwood and hardwood by species. The VAR model of roundwood import was specified with two lagged endogenous variables, that is, roundwood import volume and roundwood import price. The results showed that the significance levels of F-statistics in the softwood and hardwood roundwood import equations rejected the hypothesis that all coefficients are zero. So, we concluded that roundwood import volume can be explained by lagged import volume and lagged import price in Korea. The coefficient signs of all variables were as expected. Also, the model has good explanatory power, and there is no autocorrelation.

The objectives of this study were investigation of the sutiable propagation method by softwood cuttings of female Ilex serrata, the comparison of sex determination of Ilex serrata after seeding and the fruiting percentage of the Ilex serrata male and female. The results obtained were as follows. 85 percentage of the seed were germinated with three months cold stratification. 35 percentage of female plant were observed after seeding. Cuttings should be rooted on late June using a quick dipping of 1,000ppm IBA solution. The rooting rate of the softwood cuttings treated IBA 1,000pm on June 22 in a closed moist chamber with 50% shade screen was 72.2 percentage. The suitable planting of male and female of Ilex serrata was male one versus female thirteen in a distance of 50 meter.
Mycelial growth of L. edodes by supplement nutrition of softwood was studied on a sawdust medium. The sawdust used was from the following softwood species : Larix leptolepis, Pinus densiflora and Pinus koraiensis. The added nutritions consisted of carbon nutritions(sucrose, active carbon, xylose, glucose, paper pellet), nitrogen nutritions(potassium nitrate, ammonium chloride, asparagine, glutamic acid) and vegetable oil(rice bran oil). The sawdust medium was a mixture of 76% sawdust, 20% rice bran, 3% carbon nutrition, 0.4% nitrogen nutrition and 0.6% calcium carbonate. Following addition of carbon and nitrogen nutritions on the sawdust medium proved most suitable : L. leptolepis (glucose, glutamic acid), P. densiflora (active carbon, asparagine) and P. koraiensis (xylose, glutamic acid). The highest mycelial growth was obtained from sawdust medium of optimum condition with 97% of L. leptolepis, 110% of P. densiflora and 98% of P. koraiensis. This study has provided useful preliminary information for the cultivation of L. edodes.
The biometry, morphological properties and chemical composition of bagasse, corn, sunflower, rice, and rapeseed residues plants were analyzed. The results revealed differences in biometry properties and chemical composition of the different types of agricultural resides investigated. The greatest proportion of fiber length (1.32 mm) and cellulose (55.56%) was found in residues of bagasse plants, with a low ash (1.78%) and lignin (20.5%). The lignin of all types of agricultural resides was less than hardwood and softwood. In addition, the rice and rapeseed residues plants had highest amount of ash and extractive component. The slenderness and flexibility ratios of the all types of agricultural resides fibers were similar to some of hardwood and softwood species.
To analyze chemical compositions of softwood vinegar prepared with continuous carbonized kiln, the chemical compositions were analyzed by GC-MS spectrometry. The results were summarized as follow : 1. The amounts of methylalcohol and acetic acid and of vinegar were 0.12% and 0.8% respectively, and acidity was 0.85 2. Perfume components of vinegar were frufual, 5-meayl-2-furancarboxyaldehyde, 2,3-pentanedione, 2-butanol, 2,3-dihydrofuran, 1-(2-furanyl)-etanone, benzaldehyde, 2-furan carboxyaldehyde and acetic acid. 3 Vinegar prepared from softwood, so that murk amount of guaiacyl compound and phenol derivetives are produced from lignin and extractives was analγzed. 4 The yield of 4-methyl-di-tert-butylphenol was the highest in the nutural and carbonyl and acetic acid in the acid fractions, 3-ethylpentane in the basic fraction, and guaiacol in the phenolic fraction.
In order to identify an unknown wood sample native to Korea. the softwood databases(KSWCHUN; Korean SoftWood CHUN) and the hardwood databases(KHWCHUN; Korean HardWood CHUN) had been built. and the new computer searching programs(IDINEX; IDentification INformation EXpress) has been written in Turbo Pascal(V.5.0) and in Macro Assembly(V.5.0). The characters of the data were based on the 74 features of softwood and on the 148 features of hardwood which are a part of new "IAWA list of microscopic features for hardwood identification" published in 1989. For the purpose of this investigation the wood anatomical nature of 25 species of softwood(13 genera of 5 families) and of 112 species of hardwood(57 genera of 31 families) were observed under a scanning electron microscope and light microscope. and a lot of literature used. The IDINEX programs are based on edge-punched card keys. with several improvements. The maximum number of features in the IDINEX is 229. but that is fixed for a given database. Large numbers of taxa are handled efficiently and new taxa easily added. A search may be based on sequence numbers of features. Comparisons are made sequentially by feature and taxon using the entire suite of features specified to produce the list of possible matching taxa. The results are followings. (1) The databases of Korean wood and the searching programs(IDINEX) had been built. (2) The databases of Korean wood could be an information to search an unknown wood. (3) The databases would be valuable. for the new features, which were not mentioned in Korean wood up to the present. were observed in details. (4) The ultrastructures of the cell walls(warty layer) and crystals observed under a scanning electron microscope will be helpful to search an unknown wood in particular. (5) The searching process is more quick and accurate than the others. 6) We can obtain the information on the differences of a species from the other and search an unknown wood using probability. in IDINEX, (7) The IDINEX will be utilized to identify and classify an animal life, vegetable world, mineral kingdom, and so on.
This paper deals with the restoration of ancient wooden bridge foundation which excavated in Seta river Shiga Prefecture, Japan. Shiga Archeological Research started a marine archeological investigation of the bridge foundation in 1987. The bridge foundation stricture excavated and have since then recovered about a lots of woods and another materials. The bridge foundation structure constructed log, timbers and stones. The species of those waterlogged wood were identified as two types, hardwood and softwood. Hardwood(log : Cyclobalanopsis) was used for below foundation and softwood (timber' Chamaecyparis obtusa Endl. Cupreessaceae) was used for base structure. One of those timber sample dated by dendrochronology, we asked Dr. Misutani*. The softwood gave a felling date of 567 A.D. In result, the ancient Seta bridge foundation structure had constructed between Asuka and Nara period. We healed the news that ancient bridge foundation excavated at Woljyongyo site in Kyongju, Korea 1987. The bridge foundation Setakarahashi is similar in plane and structure to Woljyongyo structures. The Woljyongyo site report had be of value for reference. We had planning to restore those woods. Hardwood log was got serious damage. The water content varies from 400 to $600\%$. The other timbers water content varies about $200\%$. In the Shiga Center for Archaeological Operations and the Azuchi Castle Archaeological Museum, we set up the PEG impregnation tank. Those wooden objects treated by PEG method. PEG with a molecular weight of 4000. The treatment results may be considered satisfactory. The ancient wooden Seta bridge was reconstructed in Biwako Museum which established in Oct. 1996. We must take care of indoor exhibition environments. Automatic wood species identification systems have enabled fast and accurate identification of wood species outside of specialized laboratories with well-trained experts on wood species identification. Conventional automatic wood species identification systems consist of two major parts: a feature extractor and a classifier. Feature extractors require hand-engineering to obtain optimal features to quantify the content of an image. A Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), which is one of the Deep Learning methods, trained for wood species can extract intrinsic feature representations and classify them correctly. It usually outperforms classifiers built on top of extracted features with a hand-tuning process. We developed an automatic wood species identification system utilizing CNN models such as LeNet, MiniVGGNet, and their variants. A smartphone camera was used for obtaining macroscopic images of rough sawn surfaces from cross sections of woods. Five Korean softwood species (cedar, cypress, Korean pine, Korean red pine, and larch) were under classification by the CNN models. The highest and most stable CNN model was LeNet3 that is two additional layers added to the original LeNet architecture. The accuracy of species identification by LeNet3 architecture for the five Korean softwood species was 99.3%. The result showed the automatic wood species identification system is sufficiently fast and accurate as well as small to be deployed to a mobile device such as a smartphone.
