Performance Improvement of an INS by using a Magnetometer with Pedestrian Dynamic Constraints

  • This paper proposes to improve the performance of a strap down inertial navigation system using a foot-mounted low-cost inertial measurement unit/magnetometer by configuring an attitude and heading reference system. To track position accurately and for attitude estimations, considering different dynamic constraints, magnetic measurement and a zero velocity update technique is used. A conventional strap down method based on integrating angular rate to determine attitude will inevitably induce long-term drift, while magnetometers are subject to short-term orientation errors. To eliminate this accumulative error, and thus, use the navigation system for a long-duration mission, a hybrid configuration by integrating a miniature micro electromechanical system (MEMS)-based attitude and heading detector with the conventional navigation system is proposed in this paper. The attitude and heading detector is composed of three-axis MEMS accelerometers and three-axis MEMS magnetometers. With an absolute algorithm based on gravity and Earth's magnetic field, rather than an integral algorithm, the attitude detector can obtain an absolute attitude and heading estimation without drift errors, so it can be used to adjust the attitude and orientation of the strap down system. Finally, we verify (by both formula analysis and from test results) that the accumulative errors are effectively eliminated via this hybrid scheme.

  • The increasing demand from passengers in vehicles to improve safety, traffic efficiency, and comfort has lead to the growing interest of Wi-Fi based vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications. Although the V2I system provides fast and cost-effective Internet connectivity to vehicles via roadside Wi-Fi access points (APs), it suffers from frequent handoffs due to the high mobility of vehicles and the limited coverage of Wi-Fi APs. Recently, the Mobile AP (MAP) platform has emerged as a promising solution that overcomes the problem in the V2I systems. The main advantage is that MAPs may yield longer service duration to the nearby vehicles that have similar mobility patterns, yet they provide smaller link capacities than the roadside APs. In this paper, we present a new association control technique that harnesses available connection duration as well as achievable link bandwidth in high-speed vehicular network environments. We also analyze the tradeoff between two association metrics, namely, available connection duration and achievable link bandwidth. Extensive simulation studies based on real traces demonstrate that our scheme significantly outperforms the previous methods.

  • 소프트웨어 개발노력 추정에 대한 연구는 소프트웨어가 복잡해지고 범위가 크게 증가함에 따라서 그 중은 지속적으로 부각되고 있다. 관련 프로젝트를 발주하는 업체나, 이를 수주하고 개발을 진행하는 업체에게 원가를 고려하는 측면에서 매우 중요한 부분을 차지하고 있다. 이러한 개발노력 추정을 위하여 다양한 접근 방식들이 고려되어지고 있는데, 그중에서 많이 활용되어지고 있는 방식은 소프트웨어 규모에 기반을 둔 LOC(Line Of Code) 기반 COCOMO (Constructive Cost Model) 모델이나 기능점수(Function Point)를 기반으로 한 회귀분석 모델, 인공지능(Artificial Intelligence)을 활용한 신경망(Neural Network) 모델, 사례분석기법 (CBR, Case Based Reasoning) 등이 있다. 이중에서 최근에 기능점수를 활용한 개발노력 추정에 관한 연구들이 활발히 진행되고 있으나 개발노력 추정에는 소프트웨어 규모의 척도인 기능점수 뿐만 아니라, 개발환경을 구성하는 여러 가지 측면에 대한 고려가 추가되어져야 한다. 이에 본 논문은 최신의 소프트웨어 개발 사례들에 대하여 기능점수 및 추가적인 개발환경 요소들을 면밀히 분석하고, 분석한 내용에 대해서 전문가들의 설문을 통한 빈도분석 및 로지스틱 회귀분석, 데이터마이닝 기법인 신경망 분석 등을 활용하여 개발노력 추정 모델을 구축함으로써, 소프트웨어 개발의 다양한 측면의 중요성을 강조하고, 정확한 추정의 방안을 제시 하고자 노력 하였다.

Predicting unconfined compression strength and split tensile strength of soil-cement via artificial neural networks

  • Soil properties make it attractive as a building material due to its mechanical strength, aesthetically appearance, plasticity, and low cost. However, it is frequently necessary to improve and stabilize the soil mechanical properties with binders. Soil-cement is applied for purposes ranging from housing to dams, roads and foundations. Unconfined compression strength (UCS) and split tensile strength (CD) are essential mechanical parameters for ascertaining the aptitude of soil-cement for a given application. However, quantifying these parameters requires specimen preparation, testing, and several weeks. Methodologies that allowed accurate estimation of mechanical parameters in shorter time would represent an important advance in order to ensure shorter deliverable timeline and reduce the amount of laboratory work. In this work, an extensive campaign of UCS and CD tests was carried out in a sandy soil from the Leiria region (Portugal). Then, using the machine learning tool Neural Pattern Recognition of the MATLAB software, a prediction of these two parameters based on six input parameters was made. The results, especially those obtained with resource to a Bayesian regularization-backpropagation algorithm, are frankly positive, with a forecast success percentage over 90% and very low root mean square error (RMSE).

Application of UAV-based RGB Images for the Growth Estimation of Vegetable Crops

  • On-site monitoring of vegetable growth parameters, such as leaf length, leaf area, and fresh weight, in an agricultural field can provide useful information for farmers to establish farm management strategies suitable for optimum production of vegetables. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are currently gaining a growing interest for agricultural applications. This study reports on validation testing of previously developed vegetable growth estimation models based on UAV-based RGB images for white radish and Chinese cabbage. Specific objective was to investigate the potential of the UAV-based RGB camera system for effectively quantifying temporal and spatial variability in the growth status of white radish and Chinese cabbage in a field. RGB images were acquired based on an automated flight mission with a multi-rotor UAV equipped with a low-cost RGB camera while automatically tracking on a predefined path. The acquired images were initially geo-located based on the log data of flight information saved into the UAV, and then mosaicked using a commerical image processing software. Otsu threshold-based crop coverage and DSM-based crop height were used as two predictor variables of the previously developed multiple linear regression models to estimate growth parameters of vegetables. The predictive capabilities of the UAV sensing system for estimating the growth parameters of the two vegetables were evaluated quantitatively by comparing to ground truth data. There were highly linear relationships between the actual and estimated leaf lengths, widths, and fresh weights, showing coefficients of determination up to 0.7. However, there were differences in slope between the ground truth and estimated values lower than 0.5, thereby requiring the use of a site-specific normalization method.

Applying a Forced Censoring Technique with Accelerated Modeling for Improving Estimation of Extremely Small Percentiles of Strengths

  • Many real world cases in material failure analysis do not follow perfectly the normal distribution. Forcing of the normality assumption may lead to inaccurate predictions and poor product quality. We examine the failure process of the internal bond (IB or tensile strength) of medium density fiberboard (MDF). We propose a forced censoring technique that closer fits the lower tails of strength distributions and better estimates extremely smaller percentiles, which may be valuable to continuous quality improvement initiatives. Further analyses are performed to build an accelerated common-shaped Weibull model for different product types using the $JMP^{(R)}$ Survival and Reliability platform. In this paper, a forced censoring technique is implemented for the first time as a software module, using $JMP^{(R)}$ Scripting Language (JSL) to expedite data processing, which is crucial for real-time manufacturing settings. Also, we use JSL to automate the task of fitting an accelerated Weibull model and testing model homogeneity in the shape parameter. Finally, a package script is written to readily provide field engineers customized reporting for model visualization, parameter estimation, and percentile forecasting. Our approach may be more accurate for product conformance evaluation, plus help reduce the cost of destructive testing and data management due to reduced frequency of testing. It may also be valuable for preventing field failure and improved product safety even when destructive testing is not reduced by yielding higher precision intervals at the same confidence level.

무선 센서망에서의 주파수 차이 추정 비동기 Ranging 방식 (Asynchronous Ranging Method using Estimated Frequency Differences in Wireless Sensor Networks)

  • 무선 센서망에서 이동노드의 위치를 추정하는데 센서노드의 클럭주파수 차이는 TOF 추정에 중요한 파라메타이며, 이동노드와 고정노드 간의 거리 추정에 크게 영향을 미친다. IEEE802.15.4a에서는 별도의 유선 등에 의한 망동기 공급이 없는 상태에서도 주파수 차이에 둔감한 비동기 TWR 및 SDS-TWR 거리 추정 방식을 제안하고 있다. 그러나 제안된 비동기 TWR 및 SDS-TWR 방식은 여전히 노드 쌍에 따른 주파수 차이, 프레임 처리 시간, 프레임 처리 시간 차이 등에 의한 영향을 충분히 제거하지 못하고 있다. 특히 주파수 차이가 큰 저가의 발진기 사용, 서로 다른 하드웨어 및 소프트웨어에서 동작하는 센서노드는 더 큰 위치추정 오류를 유발할 수 있다. 본 논문은 주파수 차이를 추정하는 방식을 제안하고, 기존의 TWR 및 SDS-TWR 방식에 적용하였다. 시뮬레이션을 통하여 주파수 차이 추정을 적용한 제안된 방식은 주파수 차이의 영향을 감소시켜 TWR 및 SDS-TWR 등의 성능을 개선시켰으며, 25cm 이하의 위치오류가 발생하는 것을 확인하였다.

  • 정보시스템 개발 프로젝트는 다양한 리스크 요소로 인하여 많은 비용이 발생하는 구조를 가지고 있다. 일반적으로 정보시스템 소프트웨어 프로젝트가 납기 내에 성공적으로 이루어질 확률은 매우 낮아 프로젝트 실패를 막는 주요한 요인인 정형화된 비용에 대한 예측이 필요하다. 그러나 대부분의 프로젝트 규모 산정 시 산정 기준의 객관성이 부족하며, 프로젝트 수행 중 베이스라인의 관리가 제대로 이루어지지 않고 있는 실정이다. 이에 본 논문에서는 정보시스템 개발 프로젝트 초기에 현장에서 실용적이지 못한 기법의 한계를 극복하고자 방법론 기반으로 개발에 소요되는 공수를 산정하는 모델을 제안한다. 이러한 융복합적인 제안 모델을 통하여 정보시스템 개발 사업에서 소요되는 공수와 비용을 추정하는데 간단하게 활용할 수 있는 도구가 될 것으로 기대된다.

Seismic Retrofit Assessment of Different Bracing Systems

  • Structural ageing influences the structural performance in a negative way by reducing the seismic resilience of the structure which makes it a major concern around the world. Retrofitting is considered to be a pragmatic and feasible solution to address this issue. Numerous retrofitting techniques are devised by researchers over the years. The viability of using steel bracings as retrofitting component is evaluated on a G+30 storied building model designed according to ACI318-14 and ASCE 7-16. Four different types of steel bracing arrangements (V, Inverted V/ Chevron, Cross/ X, Diagonal) are assessed in the model developed in commercial nu-merical analysis software while considering both material and geometric nonlinearities. Reducing displacement and cost in the structures indicates that the design is safe and economical. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to find the best bracing system that causes minimum displacement, which indicates maximum lateral stiffness. To evaluate the seismic vulnerability of each system, incremental dynamic analysis was conducted to develop fragility curves, followed by the formation of collapse margin ratio (CMR) as stipulated in FEMA P695 and finally, a cost estimation was made for each system. The outcomes revealed that the effects of ge-ometric nonlinearity tend to evoke hazardous consequences if not considered in the structural design. Probabilistic seismic and economic probes indicated the superior performance of V braced frame system and its competency to be a germane technique for retrofitting.

공동주택의 시간의존적 설계VE 및 LCC분석 모델 (A Model of Time Dependent Design Value Engineering and Life Cycle Cost Analysis for Apartment Buildings)

  • 최근에 공동주택 건설사업을 위한 가치공학 및 생애주기비용(LCC)분석의 중요성이 대두됨에 따라, 대형 건축물의 건설사업에서 가치공학 및 생애주기분석을 위한 이론적 모델, 표준지침 및 소프트웨어 등이 개발되어지고 있다. 그러나 현재까지도 실질적인 과거 보수이력데이터의 부재로 인한 VE 및 LCC분석 결과에 대한 신뢰수준이 미흡하다. 본 연구에서는 공동주택의 건설사업에 대한 합리적인 투자의사결정과 설계대안선정을 위한 시간의존적 LCC분석에 의한 가치분석 방법론을 제시하였다. 제안된 방법론은 과거이력데이터의 불확실성과 분석대안의 가치분석을 보다 합리적으로 고려하기 위한 시간의존적 생애주기비용 모델과 퍼지로직에 의한 성능평가기법과의 상관관계를 규명하였다. 또한, 제시된 시간의존적 생애주기비용 모델과 가치분석 절차의 타당성을 검토하기 위하여 실제대상사업에 적용하였다. 본 연구에서 제안된 방법론은 공동주택 건설사업에서의 설계대안 선정, 생애주기 비용 평가 및 합리적인 예산의 분배 등에 크게 기여할 것으로 기대된다.
