  • We propose a soft-lithographic patterning method for producing a multi-domain liquid crystal (LC) alignment. The LC alignment polyimide layers are periodically patterned in the pixel boundaries by a micromolding-in-capillaries method. In our structure, the initially homeotropic LC orientations in the pixel areas are changed to axially symmetric LC domains due to the symmetric pretilt of LC molecules on the pixel boundaries.

  • Three-dimensional (3D) micro/nanostructures based on soft elastomers have received extensive attention in recent years, owing to their potential and advanced applicability. Designing and fabricating 3D micro/nanostructures are crucial for applications in diverse engineering fields, such as sensors, harvesting devices, functional surfaces, and adhesive patches. However, because of their structural complexity, fabricating soft-elastomer-based 3D micro/nanostructures with a low cost and simple process remains a challenge. Bio-inspired designs that mimic natural structures, or replicate their micro/nanostructure surfaces, have greatly benefited in terms of low-cost fabrication, scalability, and easy control of geometrical parameters. This review highlights recent advances in 3D micro/nanostructures inspired by nature for diverse potential and advanced applications, including flexible pressure sensors, energy-harvesting devices based on triboelectricity, superhydrophobic/-philic surfaces, and dry/wet adhesive patches.

  • Pilon fractures involving distal tibia remain one of the most difficult therapeutic challenges that confront the orthopedic surgeons because of associated soft tissue injury is common. To introduce and describe the diagnosis, current treatment, results and complications of the pilon fractures. In initial assessment, the correct evaluation of the fracture type through radiographic checkup and examination of the soft tissue envelope is needed to decide appropriate treatment planning of pilon fractures. Even though Ruedi and Allgower reported 74% good and excellent results with primary open reduction and internal fixation, recently the second staged treatment of pilon fractures is preferred to orthopedic traumatologist because of the soft tissue problem is common after primary open reduction and internal fixation. The components of the first stage are focused primarily on stabilization of the soft tissue envelope. If fibula is fractured, fibular open reduction and internal fixation is integral part of initial management for reducing the majority of tibial deformities. Ankle-spanning temporary external fixator is used to restore limb alignment and displaced intraarticular fragments through ligamentotaxis and distraction. And the second stage, definitive open reduction and internal fixation of the tibial component, is undertaken when the soft tissue injury has resolved and no infection sign is seen on pin site of external fixator. The goals of definitive internal fixation should include absolute stability and interfragmentary compression of reduced articular segments, stable fixation of the articular segment to the tibial diaphysis, and restoration of coronal, transverse, and sagittal plane alignments. The location, rigidity, and kinds of the implants are based on each individual fractures. The conventional plate fixation has more advantages in anatomical reduction of intraarticular fractures than locking compression plate. But it has more complications as infection, delayed union and nonunion. The locking compression plate fixation provides greater stability and lesser wound problem than conventional implants. But the locking compression plate remains poorly defined for intraarticular fractures of the distal tibia. Active, active assisted, passive range of motion of the ankle is recommended when postoperative rehabilitation is started. Splinting with the foot in neutral is continued until suture is removed at the 2~3 weeks and weight bearing is delayed for approximately 12 weeks. The recognition of the soft tissue injury has evolved as a critical component of the management of pilon fractures. At this point, the second staged treatment of pilon fractures is good treatment option because of it is designed to promote recovery of the soft tissue envelope in first stage operation and get a good result in definitive reduction and stabilization of the articular surface and axial alignment in second stage operation.

  • Surface engineering of polymers has a broad array of scientific and technological applications that range from tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, microfluidics and novel lab on chip devices to building mechanical memories, stretchable electronics, and devising tunable surface adhesion for robotics. Recent advancements in the field of nanotechnology have provided robust techniques for controlled surface modification of polymers and creation of structural features on the polymeric surface at submicron scale. We have recently demonstrated techniques for controlled surfaces of soft and relatively hard polymers using ion beam irradiation and plasma treatment, which allows the fabrication of nanoscale surface features such as wrinkles, ripples, holes, and hairs with respect to its polymers. In this talk, we discuss the underlying mechanisms of formation of these structural features. This includes the change in the chemical composition of the surface layer of the polymers due to ion beam irradiation or plasma treatment and the instability and mechanics of the skin-substrate system. Using ion beam or plasma irradiation on polymers, we introduce a simple method for fabrication of one-dimensional, two-dimensional and nested hierarchical structural patterns on polymeric surfaces on various polymers such as polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), poly (methyl methacrylate) PMMA, and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS).

  • This study was performed to identify the effect of calendering variables on the properties of coated paper such as sheet gloss, surface roughness, opacity, etc. The effect of calendering variables including the number of nips, pressure, machine speed and moisture content on the properties of coated paper was investigated. The calender was installed with two steel rolls and one cotton-made roll. With this calender, the coated sheets were passed through the calender from 1 to 4 times, applying the linear pressure on calender rolls, 5 through 100kg/cm and operating the machine speed 3 to 12m/min. Also, the moisture content of coated sheet was varied about 5 and 10%. It was found that sheet gloss and surface roughness of coated paper was increased with increasing the number of passing nips, linear roll pressure and the moisture content of coated paper. But it was shown that the opacity and brightness of coated paper were decreased under the above conditions due to the blackening. It was also suggested that the soft nip possibly increased the thermoplasticity of coating layer with the heat of steel roll, resulting in the reinforcement of surface properties positively. The sheet gloss and surface roughness of coated paper could be improved by the longer dwell time over the rolls.

  • Chromium-Molybdenum steel was plasma-nitrided at 823 K for 10.8 ks in an atmosphere of 30% $N_2$-70% $H_2$ gas under 665 Pa without and with a subsidiary cathode of $MoS_2$ to compare ion-nitriding and plasma-sulfnitriding using subsidiary cathode. When the steel was ion-nitrided without $MoS_2$, iron nitride layer of 4$\mu\textrm{m}$ and nitrogen diffusion layer of 400mm were formed on the steel. A compound layer of 15$\mu\textrm{m}$ and nitrogen diffusion layer of 400$\mu\textrm{m}$ were formed on the surface of the steel plasma-sulfnitrided with subsidiary cathode of $MoS_2$. The compound layer consisted of FeS containing Mo and iron nitrides. The nitrides of $\varepsilon$-$Fe_2$, $_3N$ and $\gamma$-$Fe_4N$ formed under the FeS. The thicker compound layer was formed by plasma-sulfnitriding than ion-nitriding. In plasma-sulfnitriding, the surface hardness was about 730 Hv. The surface hardness of the steel plasma-sulfnitrided with $MoS_2$ was lower than that of ion-nitrided without $MoS_2$. This may be due to the soft FeS layer formed on the surface of the plasma-sulfnitrided steel.

  • Braced excavation systems are commonly required to ensure stability in construction of basements for shopping malls, underground transportation and other habitation facilities. For excavations in deposits of soft clays or residual soils, stiff retaining wall systems such as diaphragm walls are commonly adopted to restrain the ground movements and wall deflections in order to prevent damage to surrounding buildings and utilities. The ground surface settlement behind the excavation is closely associated with the magnitude of basal heave and the wall deflections and is also greatly influenced by the possible groundwater drawdown caused by potential wall leakage, flow from beneath the wall, flow from perched water and along the wall interface or poor panel connections due to the less satisfactory quality. This paper numerically investigates the influences of excavation geometries, the system stiffness, the soil properties and the groundwater drawdown on ground surface settlement and develops a simplified maximum surface settlement Logarithm Regression model for the maximum ground surface settlement estimation. The settlements estimated by this model compare favorably with a number of published and instrumented records.

  • Ground subsidence in urban areas is mainly caused by anthropogenic factors such as excessive groundwater extraction and underground infrastructure development in the subsurface composed of soft materials. Global Navigation Satellite System data with high temporal resolution have been widely used to measure surface displacements accurately. However, these point-based terrestrial measurements with the low spatial resolution are somewhat limited in observing two-dimensional continuous surface displacements over large areas. The synthetic aperture radar interferometry (InSAR) technique can construct relatively high spatial resolution surface displacement information with accuracy ranging from millimeters to centimeters. Although constellation operations of SAR satellites have improved the revisit cycle, the temporal resolution of space-based observations is still low compared to in-situ observations. In this study, we evaluate the extraction of a time-series of surface displacement in Incheon Metropolitan City, South Korea, using the small baseline subset technique implemented using the commercial software, Gamma. For this purpose, 24 COSMO-SkyMed X-band SAR observations were collected from July 12, 2011, to August 27, 2012. The time-series surface displacement results were improved by reducing random phase noise, correcting residual phase due to satellite orbit errors, and mitigating nonlinear atmospheric phase artifacts. The perpendicular baseline of the collected COSMO-SkyMed SAR images was set to approximately 2-300 m. The surface displacement related to the ground subsidence was detected approximately 1 cm annually around a few Incheon Subway Line 2 route stations. The sufficient coherence indicates that the satellite orbit has been precisely managed for the interferometric processing.
