  • The effect of some thiosemicarbazide derivatives on corrosion of aluminium in 2M sodium hydroxide has been studied using thermometric, weight loss and hydrogen evolution techniques. The rate of the corrosion depends on the nature of the inhibitor and its concentration, heated of hydrogenation, mode of interaction with the metal surface and formation of metallic complexes. The compounds are weakly adsorbed on the surface of aluminium and form a monolayer of the adsorbate. Values of the Arrhenius activation energies indicate agreement with those obtained for an activation controlled process.

  • The production of geopolymer is considered as a cleaner process due to much lower CO2 emission than that from the production of Portland cement. This paper presents a study of the potential use of recycled steel fibre (RSF) coming from the recycling process of the old tires in geopolymer mortars. Ground expanded perlite (EP) is used as a source of alumino-silicate and sodium hydroxide (NaOH=5, 10, 15, and 20M) is used as alkaline medium for geopolymer synthesis. RSFs were added to the mortar mixtures in four different volume fractions (0, 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5% of the total volume of mortar). The unit weight, ultrasound pulse velocity, flexural and compressive strength of expanded perlite based geopolymer mortar (EPGM) mixtures were determined. The microstructures of selected EPGMs were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) analyses. The optimum molarity of sodium hydroxide solution was found to be 15M for geopolymer synthesis by EP. The test results revealed that RSFs can be successfully used for fibre-reinforced geopolymer production.

  • Endorcarp inhibited the embryo growth of ginseng seeds. This inhibition is not due to impermeability to water, but is probably caused by mechanical resistance. The embryo growth rate was enhanced by endocarp injury by soaking for 10 to 30 minutes in 2.5% solution of sodium hydroxide. But sulfuric acid did not affect on the embryo growth of ginseng seed.

  • The silk/paper mulberry paper was prepared by recycling of the hard twisted silk waste and its mechanical properties was investigated. The silk waste was pretreated with sodium hydroxide(0.5%) and sodium carbonate(4%) to make it easy for beating and fibrillation. The silk/paper mulberry hand sheet paper has better mechanical properties of tearing strength and air permeability compared with the traditional and modified traditional paper. Treating with alkaline solution, the hard twisted silk waste could be used for an novel composite material.

  • This paper describes the commercial application of custom ultrafiltration (UF) membranes in the resolution of two aqueous-based problems: the recovery and recycling of laundry wash water and the fmal polishing of sodium hydroxide sterilization solution in the dairy and brewing industries. Both applications are currently in the pilot Stage and employ custom-made UF membranes developed by Liumar Technologies Corporation of Ottawa, Canada.

  • Integral coloring of aluminum and its alloy with the elecrolytic solution of sulfosallicylic acid and sodium hydroxide was investigated in this study. Addition of hydrogen peroxide and potassium permanganate accelerated the anodizing speed and deepened the color of anodized film. Electron microscopic study was also performed on the surface and cross section.

  • This research explores a refined approach to mitigating the setting time delays encountered in thixotropic cement-based materials. The study evaluated three alkali agents-potassium hydroxide, sodium hydroxide, and calcium hydroxide-along with a chemical accelerator, to determine their effectiveness in addressing the delay. The results revealed that, aside from calcium hydroxide, the alkalis and the accelerator showed promising outcomes in reducing setting time. However, increasing the dosages of potassium hydroxide and sodium hydroxide negatively impacted the thixotropic properties of the paste. In contrast, the accelerator demonstrated a unique ability to preserve and even enhance thixotropy with higher dosages. Therefore, the findings suggest that the accelerator is a more effective and reliable solution than alkali materials for resolving setting time delays in thixotropic cement systems

  • Recycled aggregate used in a site is strong alkali due to calcium hydroxide attached on its surface. Accordingly, many environmental problems arise. Therefore, as basic research to reduce pH of recycled aggregate, this study tries to reduce the strong alkalinity of recycled aggregate by using mixture solution based on sodium phosphate and ammonium chloride. As a result, original aggregate has the strong alkalinity of pH 11.23, whereas pH of recycled aggregate immersed in mixture solution decreased as more mixture rate increased, and mostly pH 9.8 or less was found.

  • Hemicelluloses are useful materials for papermaking and other biotechnological applications. To recover and further utilize the hemicelluloses, this study carried out the pre-extraction of the hemicelluloses from Korean mixed hardwoods chips using hot water and sodium hydroxide solution at various temperature and time conditions. Through the hot water pre-extraction, the wood components of 22% was extracted and the 35% of the hemicelluloses which were contained in the original wood chips were dissolved into the pre-extractives. The yield of the pre-extractives was more significantly influenced by the pre-extraction temperature than the time. The pre-extractives with the yield of 30% could be obtained by alkali pre-extraction and alkali concentration was the most important factor. It had lower hemicellulose content but high molecular weight, compared with the hot water pre-extractives.

  • To study the effect of incorporation of a surface crosslinking layer on a crosslinked poly (sodium acrylate) (cPSA) absorbent with ethylene glycol dimethacrylate CEGDMA), we synthesized several surface crosslinked cPSAs with EGDMA by an inverse emulsion polymerization method to delay the absorption of excess water in concrete, Liquid paraffin was used as a continuous phase. cPSA was synthesized with acrylic acid (AA) neutralized with aqueous 8 M sodium hydroxide solution as a monomer, N,N-methylene bisacrylamide (MBA) as crosslinking agent and ammonium persulfate (APS) and sodium metabisulfite (SMBS) as a redox initiator system by inverse emulsion polymerization. FTIR spectroscopy was used to characterize $Ca^{2+}$ ion interaction with cPSA and cPSA-EGDMAs. The swelling ratios of synthesized absorbents were evaluated from the absorption in deionized water, cement saturated aqueous solution and aqueous solution of calcium hydroxide (pH 12). Equilibrium swelling times for cPSA and surface crosslinked cPSA with EGDMA were 2 and 3 hrs, respectively. We also observed an increase in setting time of the cement and an increase in the compressive strength of mortar by addition of the synthesized cPSA-EGDMA.
