Primary hepatocytes of small animals such as rat and rabbit were often used for the study of extracorporeal liver support systems. Freshly isolated rat hepatocytes form spheroids within tow days when cultivated as suspension in spinner vessels. These spheroids showed enhanced liver specific functions and more differentiated morphology compared to hepatocytes cultured as monolayers However, shear stress caused by continuous agitation deteriorated spheroids gradually. In this work we immobilized spheroids to prolong liver specific activities. First, hepatocyte spheroids were suspended in collagen solution containing calcium chloride and then dropped into alginate solution. A thin layer of calcium alginate was formed around the droplet and then was removed after the inner collagen was gelled by treatment of sodium citrate buffer. Spheroids embedded in collagen-gel bead maintained liver specific functions such as albumin secretion rate longer than hepatocyte spheroids exposed to shear stress. Therefore, we suggest that this immobilization technique may offer an effective long-term hepatocyte cultivation and facilitase the development of a bioartificial liver support device.
Constipation is one of the most common symptoms that a child visits pediatrician. The general approach to the child with functional constipation includes the following steps; disimpaction, maintenance and withdrawal of medication. There are many drugs which can be applied to children; osmotic agents (lactulose, sorbitol, magnesium hydroxide/citrate, polyethylene glycol with/without electrolytes, sodium phosphate, glycerin), stimulants (senna, bisacodyl, caster oil), lubricant (mineral oil), bulking agent (psyllium, cellulose, glucomannan). At each stage of treatment, one or some of these drug can be applied to the purpose. The author tries to summarize recent studies on drugs for constipation in child, and finally introduces new dugs for constipation which is under investigation.

The purpose of this study was to investigate phospholipase $A_{2}$ activity and lipid peroxidation I streptozotocin induced diabetic rats. Sprague-Dawley male rats weighting-Dawley male rats weighting 300$\pm$10gm were randomly assigned to normal and STZ-induced diabetic group. Diabetes was induced by intravenous injection of 55mg/kg of STZ in sodium citrate buffer(pH 4.3). Animals were sacrificed at the 6th day of diabetic states. Body weight gains were lower in DM group. Phosphatidylcholine hydrolysis in liver was not significantly different between two groups, whereas phosphatidylethanolamine hydrolysis in liver was increased by 69% in DM group comparing with that of normal group. Liver microsomal phospholipase $A_{2}$ activity and level of TBARS was increased by 91%, 109% in DM group compared with that of normal group, respectively. The present results indicate that phospholipase $A_{2}$ activity is specific to PE hydrolysis, leading to lipid peroxidation process in STZ induced diabetic rats.
Nanosized palladium particles were synthesized using palladium(II) chloride, trisodium citrate dihydrate, and sodium borohydride under stirring condition. Nanosized palladium-graphene composites were prepared from palladium nanoparticles, and graphene was enclosed with polyallylamine under stirring condition for 1 h followed by ultrasonication for 3 h. Nanosized palladium-graphene composites were heated in an electric furnace at $700^{\circ}C$ for 2 h and characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. UV-vis spectrophotometry was used to evaluate the nanosized palladium-graphene composites as a catalyst in the photocatalytic degradation of various organic dyes such as methylene blue, methyl orange, rhodamine B, and brilliant green under ultraviolet light at 254 nm.
Urease is an important microbial enzyme and its production is a marker to predict potential pathogenicity. An unusual halophilic bacterium producing urease was isolated from sea product and identified as Vibrio parahaemolyticus KH410. Its biochemical properties were indole negative, gelatin positive, sodium citrate positive and Kanagawa positive whereas other characteristics were identical as the standard strain except it showed a positive reaction on Christensen's urea agar. V. parahaemolyticus urease production was directly related to urea concentration. The production of urease was noticeable by the addition of 0.2% urea, 0.5% glucose, 2% NaCl in LB broth, and the initial pH of 5.5. The maximum production reached after 6 hr of incubation at 37$^{\circ}C$. However, NiCl2, metal ions, phosphorus did not affect production of urease.

Nanoscale gold particles have been intensively researched due to their potential applications in catalysis, electronics, plasmonics, and biological assays. In our study, we fabricated gold nanoparticles (NPs) that were synthesized in an aqueous environment via the reduction of $HAuCl_4$ by ascorbic acid (AC) with a sodium citrate (SC) surfactant. Highly monodispersed gold particles with sizes ranging from 123 to 184 nm were prepared in high-yield by a surfactant concentration. The structural and optical properties of the synthesized gold nanoparticles were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and UV-vis spectroscopy. The prepared nanoparticles exhibited efficient surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) properties that were dependent on their on size.
The following new techniques have been developed: (A); To a 500ml of sample water, it was adjusted pH 10 with ammonia-anmonium citrate, added 10ml of 1${\%}$ sodium diethyldithiocarbamate and extracted three times with 10ml of CHCl3. The extract was shaken with 10ml of 0.05N $HCl-4{\times}10^{-4}M\;HgCl_2$. The aqueous solution was added 2ml of 2N KCl and washed two times with 10ml of pure $CHCl_3$, and then recorded square wave polarograms. (B); To a 500ml of sample water adjusted pH 10 with ammonia-ammonium citrate, it was added 2ml of 1${\%}$ 8-hydroxyquinoline and extracted three times with 10ml $CHCl_3$. The separated $CHCl_3$ phase was shaken with 10ml of 0.2 N HCl. The aqueous solution was recorded polarograms directly. These methods can be used for determination of the ppb order of metal in water with an error of ${\pm}10{\%}$. The method (B) can not be used for the determination of zinc on account of the free 8-hydroxyquinoline.
Effects of sugars, temperature, pH and some chemicals on caramelization were investigated for improving of its reaction rates. Among the sugars tested, fructose showed the fastest reaction rate, followed by sucrose, glucose, starch syrup and maltose. As the reaction temperature increased from 80 to $110^{\circ}C$, the rate greatly increased by the range of $150{\sim}8000$ folds depending on sugars. It was indicated that pH 10 resulted in the highest reaction rate in the range of $pH{\;}4{\sim}10$. When several chemicals, such as phosphates and organic acid salts, were added to starch syrup, the rate increased by more than 10 folds, in particular effects of $K_2HPO_4$ and sodium salts of citrate, oxalate and succinate were significant.
The study was carried out to compare the antioxidant activities of products from caramel-type-browning reaction of xylose(XY), glucose(GL), sucrose(SU), glucose + citric acid (GLCA), glucose + sodium citrate(GLSC), glucose + glycine(GLGC) heated at 80, 120 or 140$^{\circ}C$ for 24 hr. 1. The hydrogen donating ability (HDA) of browning reaction products was generally enhanced as the browning temperature and time increased. The HDAs of the browning reaction products heated at 80$^{\circ}C$ for 24 hr were in the order of GLSC (0.387) > GLSC (0.362) > GLCA (0.301) > GL (0.299) > XY (0.290) > SU (0.281). But they were in the order of GLSC (0.543) > SU (0.328) > GL (0.309) > GLGC (0.325) > XY (0.298) > GLCA (0.275) under the condition of heating at 140$^{\circ}C$ for 24 hr. 2. The antioxidant activities of the anhydrous ethanol extracts of the browning mixtures were inferior to that of TBHQ as measured in com oil, but SU was superior to tocopherol in its antioxidant activity. All the browning mixtures showed antioxidant activities when heated at 80$^{\circ}C$; however, only SU and GLCA showed the activites at 120 or 140$^{\circ}C$. And the antioxidant activity of the SU extract was higher than that of TOCO. The antioxidant activities of the ethanol extracts were in the order of TBHQ > GLCA > GLGC > TOCO > SU > XY > GL > GLSC > control at 80$^{\circ}C$, TBHQ > SU > TOCO > GLCA > control > GLSC> XY > GL > GLGC at 120$^{\circ}C$, and TBHQ > SU > TOCO > GLCA > control > GLSC > GLGC > XY > GL at 140$^{\circ}C$.
The study performed to identify the type of ESBL against strains which are producing extendedspectrum ${\beta}$-lactamases and isolated from sewage in Suyeong sewage disposal plant, Busan Environmental Corporation. By the standard activated sludge method, Suyeong sewage disposal plant purify living and lavatory sewage gathering from the northeast Busan and the facility purify total 550,000 tons of living sewage disposal a day. 14 strains were isolated by double disk synergy test and the third generation cepha-antibiotics test. Indole, methyl-red, Voges-Proskauer, Simmon's citrate, decarboxylasedihydrolase and sugar-fermentation tests identified as Klebsiella pneumoniae (n=4) and Escherichia coli (n=10). Plasmid-mediated transmission test against isolated 14 strains proved 11 strains transmitted resistance to recipient E. coli J53 (sodium $azide^R$, $ceftazidime^S$). 9 strains of conjugant were expressed ESBL genes transferred from parental strain but 2 conjugants did not expressed. The type of ESBL from each strain was determined by isoelectric focusing points, DNA and amino acids sequencing. The results indicated that the types of ESBL transmitted to recipient E. coli J53 were TEM-1, the parental TEM type and SHV-12 type.
