Electrochemistry of Tris(2,2'-bipyridyl)Ruthenium(II)-Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate in 300 mM $H_2SO_4$ Solution

  • Electrochemistry of 1.0 mM tris(2,2'-bipyridyl)ruthenium(II) ($Ru(bpy)_3{^{2+}}$) in 300 mM $H_2SO_4$ solution with and without sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) is studied. In the presence of SDS, $E_{pa}$ of $Ru(bpy)_3{^{2+}}$ shifts to positive direction compared to the SDS free case. The intersection of two lines on ${\Delta}E_p$ vs. -log[SDS] plot is measured as a critical micelle concentration (CMC), which is 3.67 mM SDS.

Preventive Effects of Co-treatment with Fucoidan and Lutein on the Development of Inflammatory Bowel Disease in DSS Mouse Model

  • We investigated the effects of fucoidan and lutein against dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced mice colitis. Evaluations were made of the body weight, histological index such as crypt injury and inflammation score, biochemical factor such as serum amyloid (SAA) and MPO level data. The combination of fucoidan and lutein reduced the score of crypt injury and inflammation and markedly showed more decrease of the SAA and MPO levels than 5-ASA group. In addition, each sample of fucoidan and lutein was reduced the level of IL-6 which is stimulated by a lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in HT-29 cell line in vitro. Therefore, fucoidan and lutein may be useful as a dietary substance for preventing inflammatory bowel disease in humans.

  • Solubilization isotherms of 1-chlorobenzene (MCB) and 1, 2-dichlorobenzene (DCB) were investigated in ionic surfactant solutions such as sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC), and dedecyltrimethylammonium chloride (DMAC). The solubilization extent of DCB was much higher than that of MCB because of the main driving force of solubilization Is hydrophobic interactions between chlorobenzenes and hydrophobic interior of ionic micelles and DCB is more hydrophobic than MCB. CPC showed highest solubilization capacity because of longest hydrophobic tails. Simultaneous solubilization of MCB and DCB decreased slightly the extent solubilization of both MCB and DCB because the solubilization locus in the micelles is same.

  • Computer optimization technique was applied to obtain the optimum formula of o/w type ointment vehicle containing sodium lauryl sulfate and 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone (MP). In order to determine the feasibility of optimizing a vehicle composition with the aid of computer, the amounts of sodium lauryl sulfate $(X_1)$, salicylic acid $(X_2)$, and MP $(X_3)$ were selected as the independent variables for the solubility and the absorption rates of salicylic acid (dependent variables). The experimental values of absorption rates agreed well with the calculation values obtained from the polynomial regression analysis, and the contour charts drawn by computer were useful in optimization process.

  • 본 논문은 SLS의 함유정도를 다르게 한 A(0%), B(1.1%), C(2.2%)의 세가지 실험세치제를 제작하여 구취변화를 실험하였다. 대상은 전신질환이 없는 20대 성인 150명이었으며 50명씩 세 그룹( A, B, C )으로 나누어 진행되었다. SLS함량에 따른 세치제의 4주간사용 후 3집단의 구취변화를 황화물가스와 암모니아 양의 변화로 측정한 결과 3집단 모두 집단내의 변화는 있는 것으로 나타났지만 SLS함량에 따른 상관관계를 본 결과에서는 구강황(r=0.412)과 호기황(r=0.285)에서만 상관관계가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 이는 잇솔질의 개선으로 인한 변화라고 볼 수 있으며 SLS의 함량이 높을수록 타액분비율을 저하시켜, 구강건조를 유발하므로 구강 황화합물과 호기 황화합물의 수치가 높게 나온 것으로 생각된다.

  • The comparative detergency of Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) solution near the first critical micelle concentration (CMC) was measured by means of a 131 I-labelled castor oil as a soil. More than 95% radiochemical purity of 131 I-labelled castor oil was obtained using potassium lidide as a carrier. Polyester test fabric was soiled with 131 I-labelled castor oil, and washed in a conventional washing apparatus mounted on appropriate devices. Fabric radioactivities were measured before and after washing by a scintilation counter. Near the first CMC, the detergency of SDS was increased with decreasing of surface tension of SDS. It was also shown that 131 I-labelled castor oil was useful for studying the detergency of SDS.

Fast Protein Staining in Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate Polyacrylamide Gel using Counter ion-Dyes, Coomassie Brilliant Blue R-250 and Neutral Red

  • A fast and sensitive protein staining method in sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) using both an acidic dye, Coomassie Brilliant Blue R-250 (CBBR) and a basic dye, Neutral Red (NR) is described. It is based on a counter ion-dye staining technique that employs oppositely charged two dyes to form an ion-pair complex. The selective binding of the free dye molecules to proteins in an acidic solution enhances the staining effect of CBBR on protein bands, and also reduces gel background. It is a rapid staining procedure, involving fixing and staining steps with short destaining that are completed in about 1 h. As the result, it showed two to fourfold increase in sensitivity comparing with CBBR staining. The stained protein bands can be visualized at the same time of staining.

  • Mefenamic acid has been widely used clinically as an anti-inflammatory analgesic. It has poor solubility in water $(41\;{\mu}g/ml)$ and there is the difficulty of dissolution in the mefenamic acid capsules. A study was made to investigate the effect of various surfactants on the dissolution of mefenamic acid capsules. The surfactants used were sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), Pluronic F-68, F-77, and F-127. Mefenamic acid capsule containing surfactant showed significantly improved dissolution characteristics. The dissolution rate was fast in the order of SLS > F-77 > F-68 > F-127 in mefenamic acid capsules containing 0.2 w/w % surfactant. SLS was selected for further study on the bioavailability in rabbits. The area under the plasma concentration-time curve $(AUC_{0-24})$ of mefenamic acid capsule containing SLS was higher than one of mefenamic acid capsule not containing surfactant.

Sclerotherapy using 1% sodium tetradecyl sulfate to treat a vascular malformation: a report of two cases

  • Vascular malformations are the most common congenital and neonatal vascular anomalies in the head and neck region. The demand for simple and esthetic vascular malformation treatments have increased more recently. In this study, two patients that were diagnosed with venous malformations were treated with sodium tetradecyl sulfate as a sclerosing agent. Recurrence was not found one year after the surgery. This article gives a brief case report of sclerotherapy as an effective approach to treat vascular malformations in the oral cavity.

Chemical and Sensory Properties of New Gluten-free Food Products: Rice and Corn Tarhana

  • New gluten-free food product (tarhana) was produced using rice and com flours. Chemical and sensory properties of the tarhana samples were investigated and compared with those of traditional wheat tarhana. Generally, sensory analysis results indicated that utilization of com and rice flours in tarhana resulted in acceptable soup properties in terms of some of the sensory properties. The changes in electrophoretic properties of the proteins of the tarhana samples were also studied during the tarhana production. Sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacryamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) results showed that relative intensities of some of the protein bands in tarhana samples generally decreased during fermentation. The decrease was more obvious at the larger molecular weight region. Corn and rice tarhana seem to be promising food products for the celiac patients who have limited choice of cereal based foods.
