In order to study the impact fracture behavior of brittle materials, a steel-ball-impact experiment was Performed. Five kinds of materials were used in this study : soda-lime glass plates, glass/epoxy prepreg-one layer-bonded and unbonded glass plates, glass/epoxy prepreg-three layers-bonded and unbonded glass plates. Fracture patterns, the maximum stress and absorbed fracture energy were observed according to various impact velocities 40-120m/s. With increasing impact velocity, ring crack, cone crack, radial crack and lateral crack took place in the interior of glass plates. The generation of such cracks was largely reduced with glass/epoxy prepreg coating. Consequently, it is thought that the characteristics of the dynamic Impact fracture behavior could be evaluated using the absorbed fracture energy and the maximum stress measured at the back surface of glass plates.
In order to investigate the possibility of processing of brittle material by ball impact, the effects of boundary conditions about impact damage of soda-lime glass by small spheres were evaluated experimentally. It was investigated that crack appearance developed in soda-lime glass with boundary conditions of without sealing, single-sealing and double-sealing by impact velocity. The double-sealing was most effective in the development of perfect cone than other boundary condition. In case of double-sealing condition, PVC and Polyurethane sealing were more effective in producing a perfect cone formation than other sealing materials. The impact velocity range over which perfect cones were formed was influenced by both the contact area and diameter of impact particle.
The outward diffusion of $Na^+$ ions in iron-bearing soda lime silicate glass via oxidation heat treatment before the ion exchange process is artificially induced in order to increase the amount of ions exchanged during the ion exchange process. The effect of the addition process is analyzed through measuring the bending strength, the weight change, and the inter-diffusion coefficient after the ion exchange process. The glass strength is increased when the outward diffusion of $Na^+$ ions via oxidation heat treatment before the ion exchange process is added. For the glass subjected to the additional process, the weight change and diffusion depth increase compared with the glass not subjected to the process. The interdiffusion coefficient is also slightly increased as a result of the additional process.

This study investigated the possibility of strength development by incorporating the slighly coarser soda-lime glass powder (GP) with 0-100 wt.% of Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBS) to synthesis GGBS based geopolymer. Compressive strength, water absorption & apparent porosity, were experimentally determined. To determine the homogeneity of mix, the microstructure & elemental composition of samples were studied using SEM-EDS. Study reveals the improvement in strength and reduction in porosity for the samples containing up to 30% GP. Furthermore, the microstructure analyses confirmed the development of denser and compact structure with the incorporation of glass powder up to 30%.
Micro- and nanoscale texturing and control of surface energy have been considered for superhydrophobicity on polymer and silicon. However these surfaces have been reported to be difficult to meet the robustness and transparency requirements for further applications, from self cleaning windows to biochip technology. Here we provided a novel method to fabricate a nearly superhydrophobic soda-lime glass using two-step method. The first step involved wet etching process to fabricate micro-sale patterns on soda-lime glass. The second step involved application of $SiO_x$-incorporated DLC to generate high intrinsic contact angle on the surface using chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process. To investigate the effect of surface roughness, we used both positive and negative micro-scale patterns on soda-limeglass, which is relatively hard for surface texturing in comparison to quartz or Pyrex glasses due to the presence of impurities, but cheaper. For all samples we tested the static wetting angle and transparency before and after 100 cycles of wear test using woolen steel. The surface morphology is observed using optical and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results shows that negative patterns had a greater wear resistance while the hydrophobicity was best achieved using positive patterns having static contact angle up to 140 deg. with about 80% transparency. The overall experiment shows that positive patterns at etching time of 1 min shows the optimum transparency and hydrophobicity. The optimization of micro-scale pattern to achieve a robust, transparent, superhydrophobic soda-lime glass will be further investigated in the future works.

We present a low temperature thermal process for the transparent dielectric layer, barrier rib, and white back dielectric layer on the soda-lime glass substrate of the PDP by the $TruNano^{TM}$ processor in combination with a compositional modification to the conventional dielectric pastes. By this method the firing temperature can be lowered by more than $100^{\circ}C$.
An analytical model about lateral crack occurring in abrasive wear of brittle solids is developed. Stress field around the lateral crack and stress intensity factor at the crack tip are analytically modeled. Abrasive wear by abrasive particle is experimentally studied. In soda-lime glass, it is observed that chipping by lateral crack occurs and produces the greatest material removal when normal load applied by the abrasive particle is about 1.5∼3.0 N. The prediction of lateral crack length from the model is compared with the experimentally measured length in soda-lime glass.
Objectives of this research were to reclaim the coal mine overburdens using the lime waste cake from the soda ash production by stabilizing the overburden slopes, introducing neutralizing the AMD from runoff and leachate in an attempt find the sink to dispose the lime wastes and alleviate the environmental problems caused by the closed coal mines. The pH changes of the runoff and leachate collected in the tanks at the end of the experimental plots, averaged over measurements from April to August, indicated that the runoff pH of the coal overburden was 4.3 but increased significantly to the ranges of 6.7 to 7.1 with treatments of tile calcites and lime wastes. This might be related with the decreases in Fe concentrations in the runoff and leachate from the coal overburdens. The Fe concentrations in tile runoff seemed to increase with the amounts of precipitation. Results demonstrated that the amounts of lime wastes at 25% of the lime requirement were sufficient for neutralizing the acidic coal overburden. Either layering between the coal waste and topsoil or mixing with coal overburdens could be adopted as the lime waste treatment method. The lime wastes from the soda ash production might have a potential to be recycled for the reclamation of the abandoned coal mines to alleviate the environmental problems associated with coal mine waste.
