Parental smoking status and smoking environment do not only affect children's health through exposure to nicotine, but are also related to children's smoking attitude, intention and knowledge of smoking. Since this study was conducted to examine a relationship between family members smoking and smoking attitude, intention and knowledge of their children, little is known about psychosocial factors influencing smoking among Korean preschool children. This study aimed to determine the psychosocial factors (sociodemographic factors, education for smoking cigarette, knowledge about smoke cigarette) influencing smoking attitude and smoking intention, with a purpose of providing directions for future education programs for Korean preschool children. A cross sectional sample of 840 children, ages 4-7 years, living in a rural district were interviewed during August 6 - November 14, 2003. Among them, 834 children whose missing data were less than $10\%$ were included the analysis. The independent variables included sociodemographic characteristics and education for smoking cigarette, while the dependent variables were knowledge about smoking, the children's smoking attitude and their intention of smoking. The data on sociodemographic characteristics were analyzed using descriptive statistics including frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation. The correlations between the independent variables and attitude and intention of smoking were analyzed using chi-square test, t-test, and logistic regression. The results of this study were s follows. The factors that were found to be significantly correlated to smoking attitude include mother's smoking $(x^2=4.86,\;p=.03)$, grandmother's smoking $(x^2=5.56,\;p=.02)$, and knowledge of smoking cigarette $(x^2=-5.13 p<.01)$. The factors that were significantly correlated to the intention of smoking include gender $(x^2=.08,\; p=.02)$, education for smoking$(x^2=17.65,\;p<.01)$, mother's smoking $(x^2=19.05,\; p<.01)$, grandmother's smoking $(x^2=17.67,\; p<.01)$, and knowledge$(x^2=-2.17,\;p=.03)$. The children who had non smoking mother were more likely to have negative attitude (OR=2.29). The children who had a higher knowledge about smoking were more likely to have negative attitude (OR=1.58). The findings suggest that a smoking prevention program specific for preschool children is necessary to prevent early onset of smoking. The findings also suggest that the program should involve children's family members who influence their smoking attitude and intention.
Objectives : We examined the effect of sociodemographic factors, cancer, and psychiatric disorders on suicide by gender and age-specific patterns in South Korea. Methods : The study is a case-control study. Claim data was obtained from the national health insurance database and national death registration database. The number of people who committed suicide was 11,523, which was matched with a control group consisting of ten times as many people at 115,230 selected from the national health insurance and medical aids beneficiaries. The medical utilization of the case group was one year before death and that of the control group was from July 1,2003 to June 30, 2004. Four variables-address, economic status, presence of a psychiatric disease, and cancer-were used in multiple logistic regression analyses. Results : Living in cities or in rural areas showed a greater risk for suicide than living in a metropolitan city. Low economic status, the presence of a psychiatric disorder, and cancer were also statistically meaningful risk factors for suicide. The three major psychiatric diseases, schizophrenia, alcohol abuse, and bipolar disorder, were meaningful in all age groups, but the scale of the odds ratio differed by the age group. Only the psychiatric disorder variable was meaningful in the adolescent group, whereas a psychiatric disorder and economic status were meaningful for the young adult group, and all variables were meaningful for the middle-aged group. A psychiatric disorder and cancer were meaningful in the elderly group, economic status was meaningful for male subjects, and address was meaningful for female subjects. Conclusions : Factors such as living in city or rural areas, low economic status, the presence of a psychiatric disorder, and cancer were statistically meaningful risk factors in suicide. These factors also differed by age group. Therefore, policymakers should establish policies for suicide prevention that are relevant for each age group.
Statement of problem: In spite of the progress in techniques and materials in complete denture prosthodontics, patients still complain of discomfort after the insertion of complete dentures. For the last several decades many prosthodontists tried to find factors influencing patient complete denture satisfaction, however the reported results became a controversy. Purpose: The purpose of the present study was to verify the factors influencing patient satisfaction with complete dentures using multiple regression analysis. Materials and methods: 33 patients who visited the department of prosthodontics, dental hospital of Yonsei University, 4 to 6 weeks after the complete denture delivery, were asked to complete the questionnaires on complete denture satisfaction, social variables and psychological variables. The Prosthodontists who treated the patients with complete dentures were also asked to complete the questionnaires on evaluation of patients' oral condition and technical quality of dentures. The factors influencing patients' satisfaction with their complete dentures were analyzed using multiple regression analysis. Results: Among the patients' sociodemographic variables. the variables of relationship with children, economic status, housing condition, other people's opinions of dentures and gender were the influential factors on patients' satisfaction with complete dentures. Patients showing the symptoms of depression, one of the psychological variables, were dissatisfied with their complete dentures. In spite of the good oral condition, patients were dissatisfied with complete dentures, where-as the technical quality of dentures did not influence patients' complete denture satisfaction. Conclusion : According to the results above, patients' sociodemographic and psychological variables rather than clinical variables including oral condition and technical quality of dentures were the influential factors on complete denture satisfaction. The results of this study may not only enable prosthodontists to predict the success and failure of complete denture treatment, but also help both prosthodontists and patients be informed of the essentials of increasing satisfaction with complete dentures.
The purpose of this study was to explore the dynamics of stepfamilies and the adjustment difficulties such families may experience. The study describes some sociodemographic characteristics of a sample of 117 stepfamilies. The independent variables were stresses due to adjustment difficulties, which were defined as "role strains". Sociodemographic variables included gender, family income level, length of time since remarriage, type of stepfamily, and the existence of any children born to the new marriage. The dependent variable was the extent of stepfamily adjustment, expressed as a scale. The factors influencing family adjustment included stepparent gender, family income level, type of stepfamily, and various role strain variables (family boundary ambiguity, role conflict, etc.). Practical recommendations for social work are made and possibilities for future research in this area are discussed based on the results of this study.
The purpose of this study was to identify the degree of stress and job satisfaction and the relationship of stress and job satisfaction of oriental hospital nurses. The instruments used for this study were a survey of genernal characteristics(7 items). stress(6 items) and job satisfaction(20 items). Analysis of data was done by use of mean, percentage, t-test, ANOVA and pearson correlation with SPSS program. The results of this study are as follows : 1) The average item score for stress was 3.08. Religion, duration of nurse expectancy and work motivation among sociodemographic characteristics were significantly different with the degree of stress. 2) The average item score for job satisfaction was 2.84. Education, religion, marital state, carrier history, duration of nurse expectancy and work motivation among sociodemographic characteristics were significantly different with the degree of job satisfaction. 3) There were significant negative correlation among the variables : working volume and group conflict factors · role implementation fators${\cdot}$personal socialization fators/nursing skill and role implementation fatal's· personal socialization fators/rolesharing with peers and role implementation fators/relationship with co-workers and group conflict factors${\cdot}$role implementation fators${\cdot}$personal socialization fators/relationship with patients and role implementation fators/relationship with supervisors and role implementation fators. And there was a significant positive correlation between role-sharing with peers and decision-making fators.
The purposes of this study are 1) to explore the evaluating attribute of family life- insurance 2) to examine the relationship between evaluation attribute variables and level of consumer satisfaction/ dissatisfaction (CS/D), and 3) to investigate the sociodemographic variables and psychological variables which influence the purchase of life-insurance. The data used in this study include 432 households of 208 life-insurance purchasers and 224 non-purchasers Statistics used for the data analysis are x2, factor analysis, multiple regression and a discriminant analysis. The resulting major findings are as follows; 1) The evaluating attributes are saving function, convenience. economic payoff, safety for future accident, agreement of insurance, and reputation of brand. 2) Among these factors. the most important factors. in CS/D of life-insurance are saving function, and reputation of brand. 3) the purchase of life-insurance has been influenced by such sociodemographic variables as husband's age , family income, and family life-cycle. Psychological variables such as attitude of life, perceived risk, consumer attitude about insurance business did not influence the purchase of life -insurance significantly. As mentioned above, we can conclude that Korean purchasers of life-insurance are using irrational evaluating attributes. Therefore more education of the consumers and more information about life-insurance purchases are necessary. Especially low-income households and first step of family life-cycle families are turned out to need more education as well as more information.
This study was performed to explore multidimensional customer royalties and relating factors. 900 households, $1\%$ sample were randomly selected from K city located in Kangwon province. Interview survey was performed with structured Questionnaire for the entire people, 923 persons who experienced medical service utilization during one year before survey on time, september, 2004. In comparison of customer royalties by sociodemographic characteristics, the older group showed the higher level of cognitive and attitudinal royalties significantly. Education and income level also, showed negative relationship with cognitive, attitudinal and behavioral loyalties significantly. The more being a female and a visitor at oriental medicine clinic, the higher level of attitudinal loyalties. Customer satisfaction was a critical explaining variable for cognitive, attitudinal and behavioral loyalties. In multiple regression analysis, some sociodemographic characteristics showed significant relation with customer loyalties and customer satisfaction was the strongest relating variable to customer loyalties. In conclusion, multidimensional approach for customer loyalty is useful for understanding customer behaviors comprehensively. Future studies should focus on developing the more specific and valid measurement tools for customer loyalty in medical service.
Objectives : This study aimed to evaluate the factors influencing health promotion behaviors in elderly men.
