Copula Contraction and Deletion among African American Vernacular English (AAVE) Speakers

  • This is a cross-sectional study designed to analyze the correlation between the structural and social variables and the pattern of contraction and deletion of the copula verb in the speech of African American Vernacular English (AAVE) speakers in Athens in Georgia, USA using a questionnaire. The results show that the frequency of copula contraction is higher than that of deletion in all factor groups including the age of the speakers where this study found that younger speakers tend to have higher frequency of contraction and deletion of the copula than older speakers. This study analyzes this as a function of the fact that younger speakers of AAVE are conscious of the linguistic and social differences between AAVE speakers and speakers of Standard American English (SAE) and they consciously make choices regarding which norm to use at which contexts to satisfy their communicative and socio-cultural needs. This sort of conscious social behavior is not likely to disappear with age rather it might increase as a correlate of the perceived physical, socio-cultural and psychological distance between AAVE speakers and speakers of other varieties. This study shows that such perceived linguistic, socio-cultural and psychological distance has negative effects on pedagogy and I proffer the remedy.

<테레사의 초상>에 투영된 쿠바 여성의 사회문화적 이미지 연구 (A study on the socio-cultural images of the cuban female reflected in the film Retrato de Teresa)

  • The principal purpose of this study is to analyse and critique how precisely the representation of women in the film Retrato de Teresa reconstructs the socio-cultural image of the female in the late seventies of Cuban society. The film of Pastor Vega is obviously an outstanding challenge on the new subject of 'women's liberation' against machismo in the context of the Cuban society. Teresa, the female character, as a socio-cultural image of the Cuban society don't focuses on the declarative and iconic images of the women's role as a revolutionary heroin that had appeared frequently in the films of the sixties, but she struggles for getting more realistic and pragmatic values such as women's emancipation to take rights in daily life. Therefore, the declaration of the emancipation of Teresa against machismo of her husband $Ram{\acute{o}}n$ has the special and symbolic meanings of social role and function of the film in the process of Cuban cultural revolution. The film concentrates on inducing the audience to make new perspectives such as women and gender issues in the daily experience of Cuban society where the machista ideologies and practices characteristic of a patriarchal society. Conclusively the female image of this film does not represent a national heroin, but reflects the women's desire, hope, and dreams in the society. Teresa makes the audience think of representations of the true meanings of the revolution in daily life, the machista ideologies in the patriarchal society, and the women's role and fuction in the Cuban society.

도시숲 조성 및 관리를 위한 도시숲 건전성 평가지표 선정 (Evaluation Indicators for Creation and Management of Urban Forest)

  • The importance of the green space in urban area has been increasing. There are the increasing needs of creation and sustainable management of urban forest. In order to satisfy the need, it is necessary to set indicators for sustainable urban forest. With this regard, this study is to derive the indicators for evaluation of the urban forest through literature reviews, experts opinion, and field survey. The results of the study, the indicators consist of the ecological healthiness, socio-cultural function, and scenic beauty. The ecological healthiness includes stability and naturality (e.g. area, native species, connectivity etc.). The socio-cultural function contain improvement of living environment, stable emotion, community, and environmental education. The scenic beauty includes environmental-friendly facilities, maintenance of urban forest. The indicators have high feasibility to create and manage the urban forest through evaluating urban forest in practical. This indicators are useful to guide to develop urban forest and park.

중국인과 한국인 이민자들의 소수민족사회 형성과 사회문화적 적응: 캐나다 밴쿠버의 사례연구 (Formation of the Minority Societies and Socio-Cultural Adaptation of the Chinese and Korean Immigrants in Vancouver, Canada)

  • 이 연구는 캐나다 밴쿠버에 거주하는 중국인과 한국인 이민자들의 사회문화적 적응과 생활양식을 파악하기 위한 것이다. 이 연구에서는 우선 캐나다의 이민정책을 개관하고, 1996년 인구센서스와 각종 통계자료를 활용하여 중국인 및 한국인 이민자의 증가추세를 분석하였다. 아울러 전화번호부에 등재된 김씨 성을 가진 한국인의 숫자를 활용하여 밴쿠버에 거주하는 한국인의 규모를 추정하는 작업도 시도되었다. 이 논문의 초점은 중국인과 한국인 이민자들의 적응형태를 설명하고, 화교사회와 한인사회의 사회문화적 특성을 파악하는데 맞추어져 있다. 이를 위해 소수민족 이민자의 적응형태가 현지사회에의 참여수준과 문화정체성의 강약에 의하여 네가지 범주로 나누어지는 분석틀이 제시되었다. 이 연구에서는 대부분의 중국인과 한국인 이민자들의 민족정체성이 강하며, 고유의 문화적인 전통과 생활양식을 유지하고 있는 것으로 확인되었다. 그러나 중국인들의 활발한 현지사회진출에 비해서 한국인 이민자들은 상대적으로 폐쇄적인 활동영역과 민족적 울타리를 유지하고 있는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 중국인들의 사회적 통합 및 문화정체성의 유지와 관련해서는 자발적 결사체의 역할이 강조되었다. 마지막으로, 이 논문에서는 중국인과 한국인들의 장기적인 문화변용의 전망에 관한 논의가 이루어졌다.

파리공원에 반영된 한국성의 기호학적 해석 -예름슬레우 모델을 중심으로- (A Semiological Interpretation of the Koreaness in Paris Park, Seoul)

  • Although built-environment has not only function but also socio-cultural meanings, the latter is neglected in the modernism. People don't have the identity of their place because they can't communicate with environment. Therefore, expressing the socio-curtural meanings in landscape is one of main issues after the modern era. The meanings of phenomena can be analyzed by the Semiology based on Structurism, the methodology which has been developed in Linguistics and Anthropology since 1900's. The purpose of this study is to adapt Helmslev's model that can effectively explain the meanings of built-environment and interpret the Koreaness, one of important meanings in contemporary urban park, Paris park. The following methods are used for achieving the purpose. 1. Adaptation of the Helmslev's model for interpreting the urban park. 2. Interpretation of the Paris park. 3. Making the types of interpretion of Paris park. The results are as followings: 1. Helmslev's model can explain the content and expression of the urban park in denotation and connotation. 2. Th socio-cultural meanings of Paris park are the relationship of France, Yan and Yin theory, philosophy of Samjae, king's authority. And they are expressed in the pattern of paving, the shape of mounds, fountain, and pond, a picture of the wall, colours of lightings and columns, and a mark of bollards.

농촌지역 재가노인의 성공적 노화, 우울과 가족기능간의 관계 (Relationship of Successful Aging, Depression, and Family Function Among Rural Community Elders Living at Home)

  • Purpose: This study was done to examine the relationship of successful aging, depression, and family function in rural elders. Method: A descriptive correlation study design was used and data of the study were collected from 272 people who were overn 65 years of age and lived in a rural community. Result: The mean score for successful aging was $2.28{\pm}0.46$ points of a maximum 3 points. The elders showed a moderate degree of family function ($6.98{\pm}2.83$ points out of 10 points). The mean score for depression was $6.13{\pm}3.75$ points out of 15 points. There was a statistically significant correlation between successful aging and both depression (r=-.659, p<.001) and family function (r=.621, p<.001). Stepwise regression analysis was done to verify factors influencing successful aging. Depression was the dominant factor accounting for 43.2% of the total variance, followed by family function and age in that order. Inclusion of all of the study values resulted in an explanation power of 61.7%. Conclusion: The study results suggest that the provision of individual socio-psychological, and economic measures is important to promote successful aging in rural areas which are different in terms of socio-cultural as well as regional factors compared to urban areas.

독거노인의 인지기능 및 삶의 만족도 위험요인 탐색 (Risk Factors to Cognitive Function and Life Satisfaction in Elderly Living Alone)

  • 본 연구는 독거노인의 인지기능과 삶의 만족도에 영향을 미치는 위험요인을 탐색하고자 하였다. 전국표본추출로 실시된 2014년도 노인실태조사 원시자료 중에서 만 65세 이상인 독거노인 2,449명의 자료를 분석하였다. 인지기능의 위험요인은 고령과 사별경험, 무학력, 운동 안함, 낮은 사회문화 활동만족도로 확인되었다. 삶의 만족도 위험요인은 이혼/미혼/별거경험, 무학력, 미취업, 부정적 건강평가와 우울진단, 운동 안함, 정서적 학대, 경제적 학대, 재정적 방임 경험과 낮은 인지기능 수준으로 확인되었다. 이는 고령의 사별한 독거노인 대상의 적극적인 인지기능 검사 및 강화 프로그램, 사회문화활동 참여를 위한 네트워킹, 우울 예방과 운동 및 건강증진 프로그램, 노인학대 예방을 위한 사회적 노력이 필요함을 시사해준다.

지방 정기시장의 변화과정과 지역사회 - 장성 황룡장을 중심으로 - (Transformation of Local Community and Local Marketplace)

  • 이 글은 장성군 황룡장을 소재로 지방 장시의 변화과정을 구술과 기억자료에 의해 재구성한 것이다. 장시에 대한 기존연구는 대부분 역사학에서 이루어져 왔기 때문에 이 연구는 새로운 방법론을 검토하는 시도이다. 황룡장은 18세기 중엽에 장시가 처음 있었다는 것이 문헌으로 확인할 수 있다는 점 이외에 시장 출현의 구체적 원인에 대해서 규명할 수 있는 자료는 없는 상태이다. 조선 후기경 이미 인근 6개군의 주민들이 황룡장을 찾는 장시로 성립되어 있었고, 특히 우시장으로서 성가가 있었던 것으로 확인된다. 그러나 조선 후기를 거쳐 일제시대에 접어들어 장시가 번성하게 된 데에는 세금 징수와 1차 산품의 매집이라는 외부적 변수가 크게 작용했던 것으로 보인다. 이때가 황룡장으로서는 전성기였고 사회경제적인 측면에서뿐만 아니라 정치적, 문화적인 측면에서도 지역사회의 중심 고리 역할을 하고 있었다. 해방 이후의 정치적 혼란기에는 경제적 측면에서 시장의 경제적 기능은 약화되었지만 정치적 기능은 오히려 강화되었던 것으로 생각한다. 그 후 정치적 이유로 장터가 없어질 수 있는 위기를 맞기도 했지만 주민들과 시장 상인들의 힘으로 이를 저지시키면서 다시 장이 활성화되기도 하였다. 그렇지만 근대화라는 지금까지와는 전혀 다른 물결이 밀려 오면서 독자적인 상권을 유지하지 못한 채 광주권에 편입되어 쇄락을 길을 걷고 있는 상태이다. 특히 호남고속도로를 비롯한 각종 도로의 확충과 이농에 따른 농업의 기계화는 우시장으로서의 황룡장의 정체성이 흔들리게 되는데 결정적 타격을 입혔다. 지금은 인근에서도 규모가 작은 시골 장터로 변했고 개점휴업상태의 상설 상점들도 많은 상태이다. 앞으로 황룡장은 지역 축제 등의 이벤트성 행사라든지, 특산품의 유일한 유통 경로로 자리매김되는 등의 큰 변화가 발생하지 않는 한 지금의 추세는 멈추지 않을 것으로 보인다.

홧병 환자의 가족붕괴 경험 (The Experience of Family Breakdown of Hwabyung Patient)

  • Purpose: This study aimed to describe the experience of family breakdown of Hwabyung patients in a socio-cultural context. Methods: Data for this study came from 5 participants, 2 family members and 1 friend of participant by interviews and participant observations from January 2006 to April 2007. Sociology of everyday lives analyzing method were adopted. Results: There were two processes of family breakdown ; sudden on set and progressive processes. The sudden breakdown was unpredictable death of a husband, the significant family member. On the other hand, their family structure and function were broken down through the husband, who repeatedly destructive and malicious behaviors. The experience of family breakdown of middle-aged women with Hwabyung in a socio-cultural context was weakened or severed family-relationships, exhaustion of economic sources, and the breakdown of participant's body. Participant's experience of family breakdown were influenced by Korean culture, the patriarchal social system and the clan-centered family system. Conclusion: Hwabyung is the result of a clan-centered family system and patriarchal system. The approach to Hwabyung should involve not only the person with the illness but also their family.

과달루뻬 성모 신앙에 대한 인식 연구 (A study on the perception of faith in St. Mary of Guadalupe)

  • The faith in St. Mary of Guadalupe is supposed to be concerned not as reminiscence of historical events or legends, but organic product of having nowness. It's an organism that can not be stay in a fixed type. From the perspectives of syncretism the coexistence of heterogeneous elements (Symbiosis) between Catholicism and Aztec's religion has been changed constantly depending on the necessity and function of the subjects who have dreamed the social integration. It's fundamentally clear that the faith in St. Mary of Guadalupe is still valid phenomenon in the modern Mexican society and that the faith is an aspect of popular catholicism which includes the remaining elements of the religion of the Aztecs. This is to understand the meanings of the perception of the contemporary mexicans on the phenomenon for the faith in St. Mary of Guadalupe. Through in-depth interviews, it is revealed that a high rate of sharing of the information does not mean the proportional acceptance of the history. It's a interesting point to see that the mexicans consider the faith in St. Mary of Guadalupe catholic belief, having a feeling of strong tie between themselves and the Aztec's religion. In spite of the historical conflicts over the veracity of St. Mary of Gaudalupe, the majority of the contemporary mexicans consider the faith positive element to consolidate the nationality and socio-cultural identity of $M{\acute{e}}xico$ against the socio-political and ethnic conflicts in the Mexican Society.
