  • Background and objective: Land vacancy is a persistent issue in most urban areas in the United States, yet few case studies have examined how vacant lots are used and the functions they serve in local communities. The purposes of this study were to provide a new revitalization planning and design proposal for the Durant-Tuuri-Mott (DTM) target area in the shrinking city of Flint, MI, USA, and to assess the final planning and design guideline through an analysis of vacant land redevelopment alternatives. Methods: For developing a revitalization planning and design guideline, this study developed several design modules with three main design themes. Then, landscape performance of the final design proposals was analyzed by three development scenarios, based on implementation level: 100%, 75%, and 50%. These development scenarios were based on the local context and different implementation budgets needed to adopt the proposed design modules. To generate a comprehensive development plan by optimizing design module allocation in the study area, this research employed a system-oriented approach, analyzing the existing cultural, natural, and built environments. A community participant process was adopted to collect stakeholders' opinions on future development. Results: By utilizing landscape performance metrics to quantify the environmental, social, and economic benefits, this study developed optimized development scenarios and a master plan for the reuse and redevelopment of existing vacant lots across DTM neighborhoods and analyzed the benefits of each. Conclusion: This research offers a flexible design method for balancing objectives in vacant land redevelopment that can be applied in other shrinking cities.

  • As the link between traffic accidents and social and economic losses has been confirmed, there is a growing interest in developing safety policies based on crash data and a need for countermeasures to reduce severe crash outcomes such as severe injuries and fatalities. In this study, we select Daejeon city where the relative proportion of fatal crashes is high, as a case study region and focus on the severity of pedestrian crashes. After a series of data manipulation process, we run machine learning algorithms for the optimal model selection and variable identification. Of nine algorithms applied, AdaBoost and Random Forest (ensemble based ones) outperform others in terms of performance metrics. Based on the results, we identify major influential factors (i.e., the age of pedestrian as 70s or 20s, pedestrian crossing) on pedestrian crashes in Daejeon, and suggest them as measures for reducing severe outcomes.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine factors associated with the self-rated health status of the elderly and whether these factors were different from younger adults. Methods: An interview survey was conducted on non-institutionalized adults in Wonju City, Korea. Determinants of self-rated health status were identified and compared between individuals aged 19 to 64 years and those aged 65 years and over, using an ordered logistic regression conducted separately on these two groups. Participants were 1,685 younger adults and 188 elderly people. Self-rated health status was measured along a continuous scale from 0 to 100 (0 for the worst and 100 for the best they could imagine) and then binned into 11 categories. Results: Self-rated health status of the elderly in Wonju was associated with household income, education, bereavement, adequate sleep, daily and social life being affected by poor health status, mobility, and anxiety and depression. Household income, adequate sleep, and participation in social activities were significant only in the elderly, while some factors associated with the self-rated health status of younger adults, such as rural dwelling, regular exercise, living alone, and skipping breakfast were not significant in the elderly. Conclusion: In order to improve the health of the elderly in Wonju City, it would be necessary to develop programs addressing those specific needs of the elderly and to integrate them effectively in the Healthy City projects.

  • This study analyzed the open peer review results for 585 papers in the field of social sciences in F1000Research, a representative OPR(Open Peer Review) platform, and checked the relationship between the number of cited-by, altmetrics and review score. In addition, by verifying whether the review score shows a moderating effect between the relationship between the utilization of the paper and the cited-by, it was confirmed whether the paper evaluated as high quality in the open review platform can promote the number of cited-by. As a result of the analysis, first, there was no significant difference in the number of cited-by between the approved and conditionally approved paper groups, but the converted review score and the number of cited-by showed a weak positive correlation (r = 0.40 - 0.60). Second, the review score showed a weak correlation with the altmetrics, and it was analyzed that review result could weakly predict the number of cited-by and social impact. Finally, it was verified that the review score performed a significant positive moderating effect (B=1.69, P < 0.01) in making the use of the paper lead to citation. As a result of the conditional effect test, it was verified that it showed the greatest effect(B=11.32, 95% CI [10.57, 12.08]) in the group of papers rated as the highest quality. Therefore, it was analyzed that the open review scores can help researchers select high quality papers and induce citations.

Comprehensive meta-analysis methodology can examine the entire set of research results historically and wholly to illuminate the tendency or properties of the overall research trend. Academic research related to the sharing economy first appeared in the year in which Professor Lawrence Lessig introduced the concept of the sharing economy to the world in 2008, but research began in earnest in 2013. In particular, between 2006 and 2008, research improved dramatically. In order to grasp the overall flow of domestic academic research of trends, 8 years of papers from 2013 to the present have been selected as target analysis papers, focusing on titles, keywords, and abstracts using database of electronic journals. Big data analysis was performed in the order of cleaning, analysis, and visualization of the collected data to derive research trends and insights by year and type of literature. We used Python3.7 and Textom analysis tools for data preprocessing, text mining, and metrics frequency analysis for key word extraction, and N-gram chart, centrality and social network analysis and CONCOR clustering visualization based on UCINET6/NetDraw, Textom program, the keywords clustered into 8 groups were used to derive the typologies of each research trend. The outcomes of this study will provide useful theoretical insights and guideline to future studies.

  • Economic impact analyses have not been widely conducted in archives. This article reports on a two parallel surveys in the US and Canada to assess the economic impact of government archives (state, provincial, territorial, county, and municipal). The surveys utilize indirect measures of economic impact. Responses from 2,534 people in 66 archives were analyzed. Findings indicate that archives were the primary reason that respondents visited an area and that visitors exhibit specific patterns of visiting the archives in conjunction with other cultural organizations in an area. Furthermore, while many respondents used local eateries, fewer rented lodgings or spent money on theater or sporting events. As a result, the archives participating in this survey did have a modest impact on local economies. The article concludes by discussing three major questions about the evaluation of the economic impact of archives which were raised by the findings: 1) Are indirect measures the most appropriate means of assessing economic impact in archives or should archives employ direct measures as used by public libraries? 2) How should government archives formulate their value proposition and should those value propositions focus on other aspects of archives' impact, such as the social impact, to demonstrate archives' important role in society? and 3) Since visitors exhibited distinct visitation patterns, should archives work more with these other aligned organizations and work on larger forms of collective impact that benefit the entire cultural heritage sector in an area?

  • This study attempts to develop the scale of 'Successful Aging' for Korean elderly. It follows fives: (1)developing 105 items based on the literature reviews, (2)performing the 1st survey to confirm and reduce items, (3)verifying the content validity through the professional group and the elderly focused group, (4)performing the 2nd survey to explore the factors of 'Successful Aging' and (5)performing the 3rd survey to identify the construct validity and concurrent validity. The scale constructs four factors with 30 items. The four factors are confirmed : (1)self efficacy, (2)satisfaction with adult children's success, (3)couple life like companion, (4)self control. The reliability of this scale is 0.94 and the relationship between the items and each factor are statistically significant by the confirmatory factor analysis. Thus, the content validity is verified. Also the correlation with the successful aging and the life satisfaction is 0.69 and then the concurrent validity is verified. This 'Successful Aging Scale' for Korean elderly will contribute to use as the socio-metrics at the welfare practice for aging.
