  • Under the assumption that people go through stages in making dietary behavior change, this study was attempted to apply the stages of a change model for fat intake by examining the associations of social psychological variables with stages of change in dietary fat reduction. Derived from social psychological theories, 10 social psychological variables on motivational beliefs(6), social influence(3) and self-efficacy(1) related specifically to selecting every day diets low in fat were constructed. Fat and energy intakes were assessed by a short form semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. The associations of stages of change with motivational beliefs, social influence, and self-efficacy variables and energy and fat intakes were assessed in 333 female adults from large cities in Korea. Dietary stage groups differed significantly on most of the social psychological variables in ways predicted by theory. Motivational factors that lead to a psychological state of readiness to take action were important in the early stages of the dietary change process. Social influences were more important in the stages as people decide to take action. Self efficacy and motivational beliefs, particularly, reduction of perceived barriers were important in maintaining fat reduction behavior. The results of our study indicate differences in stages of change in fat reduction behavior in terms of nutrient intakes and social psychological correlates and suggests that adding a time dimension to social psychological models increases our understanding of dietary change, which assist us in designing nutrition education interventions that are more appropriately targeted by stage of change. • The present study investigated the relationship between the perceptions of social change and subjective well-being, and the effectiveness of coping resources in such a relationship by comparing the structural equation models of the samples obtained in two countries (Korea and the United States). Participants in two countries reported their perceived pace of social change, evaluation of social change, subjective well-being, personal resources(self-esteem and self-efficacy), and social resources. Based on the survey data, a structural equation models was developed and compared across two samples to examine the moderation effects of coping resources by culture and nations. As a result, it was revealed that the perceived pace of social change affected subjective well-being through the mediation of the evaluations of social change and that there were differences in the effectiveness of coping resources: social resources had stronger effects for the Korean sample whereas personal resources had stronger effects for the U.S. sample. Discussions on the psychological impact of a new type of social stress, social change, is included.

  • This study has been conducted to assess the effectiveness of the elderly employment programs through change of social capital by understanding how the elderly employment programs in the elderly employment policy of Korea has effected the change of social capital. The method of research was to design the research in the nonequivalent control groups design from the quasi-experimental design for the 500 elderly who participated and 250 who have not participated in the elderly employment programs through distributing structured questionnaire by classifying into before and after the project during 7 months from March 1, 2010 to September 30, 2010 to those above 65 living in Changwon. The social capital which is an important variable among the measurement index of the study has been set as trust, network, and social participation fields based on the aforementioned theoretic background. When the fact that there is a partial difference in the change of social capital of the elderly according to the participation in the elderly employment programs and the timing (before/after) is looked at in terms of change of social capital after controlling the general character of the elderly and the pre-score, there are differences per timing according to the participation in the elderly employment programs. Thus, the participation in the elderly employment programs had a significant difference in the change of social capital. It is possible to see that the trust, network, and social participation of the social capital all increased in the elderly with difficulties in their living status. It can be seen that the participation in the elderly employment programs brings forth increase of social capital for the elderly with difficulties in their living status. Among the social capitals, the elderly who participated in the elderly employment programs showed that the trust increased the most. Consequently, in order to increase the comprehensive social capital, the programs must be carried out focused on the vulnerable class in parallel to the elderly employment programs for the general elderly of other classes.

  • This study deals with the psycho-social development of children raised by disabled parents. In particular, we are willing to examine the influence of parental factors such as social engagement and future forecast on the change of children's psycho-social development. Using the three waves of Korean Welfare Panel Study data, these predictors were examined through the Latent Growth Curve Modeling. The result shows that parent's disability has a negative influence on their children's psycho-social development. However, similar to the findings of the previous studies, the degree of this influence tends to be decreased as children grow up. Lastly, two parental factors have a direct influence on the psychological development of children. Furthermore, parent's social engagement has an indirect influence on the change of sociality of children through the psychological change of them. This result means that we should encourage disabled parents to participate actively in social activities and think positively about their future.

  • Climate change is a constant threat to human life, and it is important to understand the public perception of this issue. Previous studies examining climate change have been based on limited survey data. In this study, the authors used big data such as news articles and social media data, within which the authors selected specific keywords related to climate change. Using these natural language data, topic modeling was performed for discourse analysis regarding climate change based on various topics. In addition, before applying topic modeling, sentiment analysis was adjusted to discover the differences between discourses on climate change. Through this approach, discourses of positive and negative tendencies were classified. As a result, it was possible to identify the tendency of each document by extracting key words for the classified discourse. This study aims to prove that topic modeling is a useful methodology for exploring discourse on platforms with big data. Moreover, the reliability of the study was increased by performing topic modeling in consideration of objective indicators (i.e., coherence score, perplexity). Theoretically, based on the social amplification of risk framework (SARF), this study demonstrates that the diffusion of the agenda of climate change in public news media leads to personal anxiety and fear on social media.

  • This study seeks to find new strategies for the development of Tapgol Park and to identify Programs to promote this development. In addition, the study specifies the purpose and meaning of these efforts by revealing social aspects not apparent in the physical form of the site, and reading how these aspects influenced the development of Tapgol Park Because the focus of the study lies in reading cultural aspects of the site which have to be understood within the context of their social circumstances, the study drew materials from mass media such as newspapers and literary magazines, which best reflect these social aspects. Interpreting the over 100 you history of Tapgol Park in a cultural context, the study found a meaningful suggestion that such a small urban place located in a city forms a cultural identity in the course of communicating with its surrounding social situations. The change in the identity of Tapgol Park has been sensitive to changing social circumstances rather than the physical structure of the space. The original function of Tapgol Park as a traditional city park has gradually changed towards strengthening social functions, much like the character of an urban plaza. In the process of change the park developed a unique culture. This park culture, however, came not from the original design but from its close interactions with social circumstances changing over time. At the same time, the change in identity seen in Tapgol Park has not been fresh formed. It can be said that the inertia came into light with the potential powers under the place over the long history having been combined into the then social circumstances. In early 2002, the park re-opened, refurbished as one of the relics of the March 1st Movement. Investigating how cultural inertias that have been developing in various forms to date will change and be maintained in this new paradigm is an important assignment for researchers.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the effects of change of social relations due to COVID-19 on life satisfaction and to examine mediating effect of leisure satisfaction in the relationship between change of social relations due to COVID-19 and life satisfaction of older people. This study utilized 2021 Social Survey data and 7,203 older persons aged over 65 years were analyzed. Multiple regression analyses were used for the analyses and significance of mediating effect was tested using bootstrapping methods. Study findings showed that change of social relations due to COVID-19 had a significant effect on life satisfaction of older people. That is, those who experienced increasing distance from neighbors and friends reported lower level of life satisfaction. Also, leisure satisfaction partially mediated the effects of change of social relations due to COVID-19 on life satisfaction. Results of this study suggest that various interventions are needed to prevent a decrease of quality of life of older people in times during which social distancing can be necessary like COVID-19 pandemic.

  • This study was to analyze data of climate change impacts on social infrastructure using text-mining methodology, and to visualize the spatial information by integrating those with regional data layers. First of all, the study identified that the following social infrastructure; power, oil and resource management, transport and urban, environment, and water supply infrastructures, were affected by five kinds of climate factors (heat wave, cold wave, heavy rain, heavy snow, strong wind). Climate change impacts on social infrastructure were then analyzed and visualized by regions. The analysis resulted that transport and urban infrastructures among all kinds of infrastructure were highly impacted by climate change, and the most severe factors of the climate impacts on social infrastructure were heavy rain and heavy snow. In addition, it found out that social infrastructure located in Seoul and Gangwon-do region were relatively largely affected by climate change. This study has significance that atypical data in media was used to analyze climate change impacts on social infrastructure and the results were translated into spatial information data to analyze and visualize the climate change impacts by regions.
