Advanced On-Chip Debugging Unit Design for JTAG-based SoC (JTAG기반 SoC의 개선된 온 칩 디버깅 유닛 설계)

  • An on-chip debugging unit is proposed aiming performance enhancement of JTAG-based SoC systems. The proposed unit comprises a JTAG module and a core breaker. The IEEE 1149.1 standard has been modified and applied to the new JTAG module. The proposed unit eliminates redundant clock cycles included in the TAP command execution stage. TAP execution commands are repeatedly issued to perform debugging of complicated SoC systems. Simulation on the proposed unit shows some 14% performance enhancement and 50% gate count reduction compared to the conventional ones.

  • To develop SoC program for embedded systems, a tool that can remotely debug from host system is needed. Because the existing remote debugging systems using GDB don't offer information of the SoC program execution in real-time, it is difficult to observe condition of the program execution, and also they have limited characteristics to tools and use costly adaptors. In this paper, a real-time tracking tool that can record SoC status on the nv each execution of the assigned instructions is introduced and an economical USB-JTAG adaptor is proposed. And it is shown that this tool can track the execution of a composed program in the target system based on PXA255 processor.

  • LEON3 is a 32-bit synthesizable processor based on the SPARC V8. It can be connected to AMBA 2.0 bus and has a 7- stage pipeline, IEEE-754 FPU and 256[KB] cache. It can be easily implemented using FPGA and used for a SoC design. DSU which comes with LEON3 can be used to control and monitor the operation of LEON3. And DSU makes it easy to set a debugging environment for the development of both hardware and software for an embedded systems based on LEON3. This paper presents the summary of the debugging tool for LEON3 based embedded systems. The debugging tool can initialize the target hardware, find out how the target hardware is configured, load application code to a specified memory space and run that application code. To provide users a debugging environment, it can set breakpoints and control the operation of LEON3 correspondingly. And function call trace is one of key functions of the debugging tool.

  • As the technology of SoC design has been developed, the debugging is more and more important and users want a fast and reliable debugger. This paper deals with an implementation of the fast debugger which can reduce a debugging processing cycle by designing a modified JTAG suitable for a new RISC processor debugger. Designed JTAG is embedded to the OCD of Core-A and works with SW debugger. We confirmed the functions and reliability of the debugger. By comparing to the original JTAG system, the debugging processing cycle of the proposed JTAG is reduced at 8.5~72.2% by each debugging function. Further more, the gate count is reduced at 31.8%.

  • Since ubiquitous embedded software is sensitive to the resources and environment of target system, it should be debugged in the same environment as actual target system. However, existing tools to debug embedded software, in which access to internal signal or resources is limited, are uneconomical. In the thesis, economical and practical USB-JTAG Adapter that can use open GDB is suggested. It can remove existing limitations of environment implementation that have many difficulties in implementing an environment for remote debugging. Hence, the thesis provides economical interfacing environment that can debug ubiquitous embedded software inside remote system.

  • 임베디드 소프트웨어는 타겟 시스템의 자원과 타이밍에 민감하므로 실제 타겟 시스템과 동일한 환경에서 디버깅해야한다. 이를 위한 기존의 기법들은 타겟 시스템의 자원에 직접적으로 접근하여 시스템 상태를 조사하거나 제어한다. 그러나 이러한 기법들은 내부 신호나 자원에 대한 접근이 제한되어 있는 SoC (System-On-a-Chip) 프로그램을 디버깅하기는 부적합하다. 본 논문에서는 산업 표준화된 JTAG을 기반으로 공개 소프트웨어인 gob를 연동하여 SoC 소프트웨어를 디버깅하는 도구를 제안한다. 따라서 본 도구는 타겟 시스템에 영향을 주지 않고 경제적으로 디버깅할 수 있는 환경을 제공한다.

  • 임베디드 시스템에서 요구하는 SoC 프로그램을 개발하기 위해서는 자원이 풍부한 호스트 시스템에서 원격으로 디버깅할 수 있는 도구가 필요하다. 그러나 GDB를 이용하는 기존의 원격디버깅 도구는 SoC 프로그램의 수행시에 정보를 실시간으로 제공하지 못하므로, 프로그램의 수행 양상을 실시간으로 감시하기 어렵다. 본 논문은 지정된 명령문의 수행시마다 SoC의 상태를 수행 중에 기록할 수 있는 실시간 추적도구를 소개한다. 그리고 본 도구가 PXA255 프로세서 기반의 타켓 시스템에서 합성 프로그램의 수행을 실시간으로 추적할 수 있음을 보인다.

  • SoC 프로그램은 타겟 시스템의 자원과 타이밍에 민감하여 실제 타겟 시스템과 동일한 환경에서 디버깅해야 하므로 호스트 시스템과 타겟 시스템간의 원격 접속을 위한 Adapter가 필수적으로 요구된다. 그러나 기존의 디버깅 도구에 사용되는 고가의 Adapter들은 도구에 제한적이기 때문에 다른 도구와의 연동이 불가능하다. 본 논문에서는 산업표준인 JTAG을 기반으로하는 SoC를 원격으로 제어하기 위한 고속의 USB-JTAG Adapter를 개발하여 GDB 기반의 경제적 원격 디버깅 도구를 개발할 수 있음을 보인다.
