  • The present study was to investigate the heat transfer enhancement effect of coil wire fins in an ice storage system. For the two cases of tubes with internal brine flows, a finned tube with coil wires on its outer surface and a smooth tube, the rates of ice layer were tested and compared for both the icing processes. The coil fins were made of a stainless steel wire with a dia. of 2.0(mm), and the coil had an outer dia. of 10(mm) and a helix angle of 60($^{\circ}$). The experimental results showed that the coil fins could substantially reduce the thermal resistance of the ice layer, and enhance the heat flow rates between the water in the storage tank and the brine. The ice storing time was found to be shortened by 13(%) for the coil fins to get the same amount of ice layer that was built on the smooth tube wall for 10 hours of operation when the same thermal conditions were provided.

  • An experimental study was carried on the characteristics of fluid flow and heat transfer in a fluidized bed shell-and-tube type heat exchanger with corrugated tubes. Seven different solid particles having same volume were circulated in the tubes. The effects of various parameters such as water flow rates, particle geometries and materials, and geometries of corrugated tubes on relative velocities and drag coefficients were investigated. The present work showed that the drag force coefficients of particles in the corrugated tubes were usually lower than those in the smooth tubes, meanwhile the relative velocities between particles and water in the corrugated tubes were little higher than those in the smooth tubes except the glass.

  • Refrigerant mixtures provide an opportunity to adjust their properties to fit design criteria and a possibility to create new blends that can improve heat transfer characteristics. Therefore, mixture of $CO_2$ and propane is chosen which may be a promising refrigerant and has good environmental compatibility. This paper presents measured heat transfer coefficient data during evaporation process of $CO_2$/propane mixtures flowing upward in vertical smooth and. micro-fin tubes. Smooth and micro-fin tubes with outer diameters of 5 mm and length of 1.44in were selected as test tubes. The tests were conducted at mass fluxes of 212 to $656kg/m^{2}s$, inlet temperatures of -10 to $30^{\circ}C$, heat fluxes of 15 to $60\;kW/m^2$ and for several compositions (75/25, 50/50, 25/75 wt%). Among $CO_2$/propane refrigerant mixtures, the heat transfer characteristics are much better than that of any compositions when the composition is 75/25 (wt%).

  • This study investigates the effect of an included angle and heat flux on heat transfer of V-shape tube array having a horizontal upper tube. The test uses two stainless steel tubes with a smooth surface submerged under the water at atmospheric pressure. The angle varies from 2° to 24°. The heat transfer coefficient gets decreasing in consequence as the angle increases. The enhancement due to the lower tube is distinct as the heat flux is lower than 60 kW/㎡, where the effect of the convective flow is dominant. The present study and the published results show a similar tendency. Although the heat transfer coefficient for the present study is smaller than the symmetry case, enhanced heat transfer is observed compared to the tube array having a lower horizontal tube as the included angle is less than 10°.

  • New alternative refrigerants have been developed due to the ozone layer depletion and global warming. For this reason, carbon dioxide is believed to be a promising refrigerant for use in air conditioners and heat pumps. Evaporative heat transfer characteristics and pressure drop of $CO_2$ with outer diameter of 5 mm in inclined ($45^{\circ}$) smooth and micro-fin tubes have been investigated by the experiments with respect to several test conditions such as mass fluxes, heat fluxes, evaporation temperatures in this study. The inclined ($45^{\circ}$) smooth and micro-fin tubes with length of 1.44 m were installed to measure the evaporative heat transfer coefficients of $CO_2$ and heat was supplied to the refrigerant by direct heating method where the test tube was uniformly heated by electricity. The tests were conducted at mass fluxes from 212 to $656\;kg/m^2s$, heat fluxes from 15 to $60\;kW/m^2$ and evaporation temperatures from -10 to $20^{\circ}C$. The heat transfer coefficients of $CO_2$ are slightly increased with increasing mass flux, and the heat transfer characteristics in the inclined ($45^{\circ}$) tubes are enhanced about $5{\sim}10%$ compared with those in horizontal or vertical tubes.

  • Single phase heat transfer coefficients were measured for turbulent water flow in a micro-fin tube by using Wilson plot technique. An experiment for counterflow heat exchange between the micro-fin tube and its outer annulus passage was performed. The annulus side heat transfer resistance was varied and the overall heat transfer coefficients were measured. The single-phase heat transfer coefficients in a micro-fin tube were obtained by Wilson plot technique. Nusselt numbers based on the real heat transfer area and the nominal area were about 35% and 50% larger than those for smooth tube respectively Also, single-phase heat transfer correlations based on real heat transfer area and nominal area have been proposed for a micro-fin tube.

  • This paper presents a pressure drop correlation for evaporation and condensation of alternative refrigerant with oil in micro-fin tubes. The correlation was developed from a data base consisting of oil-free pure and mixed refrigerants in micro-fin tube; Rl25 R134a. R32 R410a(R32/R125 50/50% mass), R22, R407c(R32/R125/R134a, 23/25/52% mass) and R32/R134a(25/75% mass). The micro-fin tube used in this paper had 60 0.2mm high fins with a 18 helix angle. The cross sectional flow area $(A_c)$ was $60.8 mm^2$ giving an equivalent smooth diameter$(D_e)$ of 8.8mm. The hydraulic diameter $(D_h)$ was estimated to the 5.45mm. The new correlation was obtained by replacing the friction factor and the tube-diameter in Bo Pierre correlation by a friction factor derived from pressure drop data for a micro-fin tube and the hydraulic diameter, respectively. This correlation was also used to predict some pressure data with a lubricant after using a mixing viscosity rule of lubricants and refrigerants. As a result, the new correlation was also well predicted to the measured data within a mean deviation of 19.0%.

  • Heat transfer characteristics in terms of the tube wall-temperature and the enthalpy have been investigated utilizing ribbed (rifled) tubes in order to enhance heat transfer performance. Considerations were given for the cases of smooth tubes in order to compare with the case of ribbed tubes. The tilt angle of the experimental tubes are from 0.deg. to 90.deg. , in order to simulate the boiler water tubes having 15.deg.-90.deg. inclined angle in boiler nose and studded tubes (burner zones), Natural convection and forced convection (Re=1810) conditions were considered in the experiments. The experimental results for the effect for the tube inclination through a natural convection and forced convection are presented and it is shown that ribbed tubes permit an appreciable increase in heat transfer coefficients and consequently it means substantial reductions in boiler water wall tubes and heat exchanger surface areas.

  • Evaporation heat transfer coefficients and pressure drops were measured for smooth and micro-fin tubes with R-22 and R-410A. Heat transfer measurements were performed for 3.0m long horizontal tubes with nominal outside diameters of 9.52 and 7.0mm over an evaporating temperature range of -15 to 5$\^{C}$, a mass flux range of 68 to 211kg/㎡s, and a heat flux range of 5 to 15kW/㎡. It was observed that the heat transfer coefficient increased with mass flux. Evaporation heat transfer coefficients of R-22 and R-410A increased as the evaporating temperature dropped at a lower heat flux. Generally, R-420A showed the higher heat transfer coefficients than R-22 in the range of low mass flux, high heat flux and high evaporating temperature. Pressure drop increased with a decrease of evaporating temperature and a rise of mass flux. Pressure drop of R-22 was higher than that of R-410A at the same mass flux.

  • In this study, condensation heat transfer coefficients (HTCs) of nonazeotropic refrigerant mixtures of HFC32/HFC 134a and HCFC123 at various compositions were measured on a horizontal smooth tube. All data were taken at the vapor temperature of 39$^{\circ}C$ with a wall subcooling of 3~8K. Test results showed that HTCs of tested mixtures were 11.0~85.0% lowed than the ideal values calculated by the mass fraction weighting of the HTCs of the pure components. Thermal resistance due to the diffusion vapor film was partly responsible for the significant reduction of HTCs with these nonazeotropic mixtures. The measured data were compared against thc predicted ones by Colburn and Drew's film model and a good agreement was observed within a deviation of 15%.
