An experience based training system concerning various fire situations which may result many casualties has been required to make rapid decision and improve the responsiveness. Recently, the necessity of virtual reality (VR) based training system which can replace a dangerous full-scale fire training and be easily adopted to the training or evaluation process is increasing. This study constructed tile virtual environment according to pre-defined scenarios, utilized the FDS(Fire Dynamics Simulator), three dimensional computational fire analysis program, to derive numerically simulated data on the propagation of fire. Finally, by visualizing the realistic fire and smoke behavior through virtual reality technique and implementing real-time interaction, we developed a VR-based fire training simulator. Also, in order to ensure the sense for tile real of a virtual world and reaI-time performance at the same time, we proposed appropriate data processing and space search algorithms, demonstrate d the value of proposed method through experiments.

Wake structures behind two circular cylinders with different groove configurations(U and V-shape) have been investigated experimentally. The results were compared with those for the smooth cylinder having the same diameter D. The drag force, mean velocity and turbulent intensity profiles of wake behind the cylinders were measured with varying the Reynolds number in the range of Re(sub)D=8,000∼14,000. As a result, the U-shaped groove was found to reduce the drag up to 18.6%, but the V-shaped groove reduced drag force only 2.5% compared with the smooth cylinder. As the Reynolds number increases, the vortex shedding frequency becomes a little larger than that of the smooth cylinder. The visualized flow using the smoke-wire and particle tracing methods shows the flow structure qualitatively.

An experimental investigation was performed to study the characteristics of turbulent swirling flow in the cylindrical annuli. The swirl angle measurements were performed by flow visualization technique using smoke and dye liquid. By using the particle image velocimetry method. this study has found the time-mean velocity distribution and turbulent intensity with swirl for Re=20,000. 30.000. 50.000. and 70,000 along longitudinal sections. The results appear to be physically reasonable. Other experimental study was performed to investigate heat transfer characteristics of turbulent swirling air flow in axisymmetric annuli. The static pressure. the local air flow temperature, and the wall temperature with decaying swirl were measured by using thermocouples and the friction factor and the local Nusselt number were calculated for Re=30,000. 50,000 and 70000. The local Nusselt number was compared with that obtained from the Dittus-Boelter equation with swirl and without swirl, respectively. The results showed that the swirl enhances the heat transfer at the inlet and the outlet of the test tube.
Climate change is an important issue, with many researches examining not only future climatic conditions, but also the interaction of climate and air quality. In this study, a new version of the emissions processing software tool - Python-based PRocessing Operator for Climate and Emission Scenarios (PROCES) - was developed to support climate and atmospheric chemistry modeling studies. PROCES was designed to cover global and regional scale modeling domains, which correspond to GEOS-Chem and CMAQ/CAMx models, respectively. This tool comprises of one main system and two units of external software. One of the external software units for this processing system was developed using the GIS commercial program, which was used to create spatial allocation profiles as an auxiliary database. The SMOKE-Asia emissions modeling system was linked to the main system as an external software, to create model-ready emissions for regional scale air quality modeling. The main system was coded in Python version 2.7, which includes several functions allowing general emissions processing steps, such as emissions interpolation, spatial allocation and chemical speciation, to create model-ready emissions and auxiliary inputs of SMOKE-Asia, as well as user-friendly functions related to emissions analysis, such as verification and visualization. Due to its flexible software architecture, PROCES can be applied to any pregridded emission data, as well as regional inventories. The application results of our new tool for global and regional (East Asia) scale modeling domain under RCP scenario for the years 1995-2006, 2015-2025, and 2040-2055 was quantitatively in good agreement with the reference data of RCPs.

A push pull hood system is frequently applied to control contaminants evaporated from an open surface tank. Efficiency of push pull hood system is affected by various parameters, such as, cross draft, vessel shapes, tank surface area, liquid temperature. A previous work assisted by flow visualization technique qualitatively showed that a strong cross draft blown from the pull hood to push slot could destroy a stable wall-jet on the surface of tank, resulting in the abrupt escape of smoke from the surface. In this study, the tracer gas method was applied to determine the effect of cross-draft on the capture efficiency qualitatively. A new concept of capture efficiency was introduced, that is, linear efficiency. This can be determined by measuring the mass of tracer gas in the duct of pull hood while the linear tracer source is in between push slot and pull hood. By traversing the linear tracer source from the push slot to the pull hood, it can be found where the contaminant is escaped from the tank. Total capture efficiency can be determined by averaging the linear efficiencies. Under the condition of cross-draft velocities of 0, 0.4, 0.75, 1.05 and 1.47m/s, total capture efficiencies were measured as 97.6, 95.4, 94.6, 92.7 and 70.5% respectively. The abrupt reduction of efficiency with cross-draft velocity of 1.47m/s was due to the destruction of tank surface wall-jet by the counter-current cross-draft. The same phenomenon was observed in the previous flow visualization study. As an alternative to overcome this abrupt efficiency drop, the 20% increase of hood flow rates was tested, resulting in 20% efficiency increase.

An experimental study has been performed on vortex pairing under fundamental and subharmonic forcing with controlled initial phase differences through hot-wire measurements and a multi-smoke wire flow visualization. For the range of St$_{D}$ < 0.6, vortex pairing was controlled by means of fundamental and subharmonic forcing with varying initial phase differences. Much larger mixing rate was achieved by two-frequency forcing with a proper phase difference than one frequency forcing. As St$_{D}$ decreased, vortex pairing was limited to a narrow region of the initial phase difference between two disturbances and higher amplitudes of the fundamental and its subharmonic at the nozzle exit were required for more stable pairing. As the amplitude of the subharmonic at the nozzle exit increased for fixed St$_{D}$ and fundamental amplitude, the distribution of the subharmonic mode against the variation of the initial phase difference changed from a sine function form into a cusp-like form. Thus, vortex pairing can be controlled more precisely for the former case. For St$_{D}$ > 0.6, non-pairing advection of vortices due to the improper phase difference was sometimes observed in several fundamental forcing amplitudes when only the fundamental was applied. However, when its subharmonic was added, vortex pairing readily occurred. As the initial amplitude of this subharmonic increased, the position of vortex pairing moved upstream. This was thought to be due to the fact that the variation of the initial phase difference between the fundamental and its subharmonic has less effects on vortex pairing in the region of fundamental-only vortex pairing.pairing.
Physics-based graphic techniques are used when simulating and rendering natural phenomena such as smoke, water and flame with computational physics. We propose novel methods which render simulated particle data fast onto 3D using tetrahedron splat. We calculate the position and the normal vector of splat by SPH(smoothed particle hydrodynamics) method then we reconstruct splat into quadrangular pyramid to reduce seam. We implement this technique for SPH fluid simulation, and animate natural flow of water successfully.

The heat transfer and flow measurements on a cylindrical pedestal mounted on a flat surface with a turbulent impinging jet were made. The experiments were made for the jet Reynolds number of Re = 23,000, the dimensionless nozzle-to-surface distance of L/d = 2~10, the dimensionless pedestal height of H/D = 0~1.5. Measurements of the surface temperature and the Nusselt number distributions on the plate surface were made using liquid crystal and shroud-transient technique. Flow measurements involve smoke flow visualization and the wall pressure coefficient. The results show that the wall pressure coefficient sharply decreases along the upper surface of the pedestal. However, the pressure increases when the fluid escapes from the pedestal and then collides on the plate surface. The secondary maxima in the Nusselt numbers occur in the region of 1.0 $\leq$ r/d $\leq$ 1.9. Their values for the case of H/D = 0.5 are maximum 80% higher than those for other cases. The formation of the secondary maxima may be attributed to the reattachment of flow on the plate surface which was separated at the edge of the pedestal.
The flow around a circular cylinder was controlled by attaching O-rings to reduce drag force acting on the cylinder. Four experimental models were tested in this study; one smooth cylinder of diameter D (D=60mm) and three cylinders fitted with O-rings of diameters d=0.0167D, 0.05D and 0.067D with pitches of PPD=1D, 0.5D and 0.25D. The drag force, mean velocity and turbulent intensity profiles in the near wake behind the cylinders were measured for Reynolds numbers based on the cylinder diameter in the range of $Re_D=7.8{\times}10^3{\sim}1.2{\times}10^5$. At $Re_D=1.2{\times}10^5$, the cylinder fitted with O-rings of d=0.0167D in a pitch interval of 0.25D shows the maximum drag reduction of about 5.4%, compared with the smooth cylinder. The drag reduction effect of O-rings of d=0.067D is not so high. For O-ring circulars, as the Reynolds number increases, the peak location of turbulence intensity shifts downstream and the peak magnitude is decreased. Flow field around the cylinders was visualized using a smoke-wire technique to see the flow structure qualitatively. The size of vortices and vortex formation region formed behind the O-ring cylinders are smaller, compared with the smooth cylinder.
Liquefied petroleum gas and compressed natural gas haven been regarded as promising alternative fuels because of no smoke, and they are also clean fuel for spark-ignited engine. In spark-ignited direct-injection engine, direct injection technology can increase engine volumetric efficiency significantly and also reduce necessity of throttle valve. This study designed combustion chamber equipped with visualization system. To improve ignition probability, the study designed to help three types of impingement-walls to form mixture. In doing so, LPG CNG-air mixture could be easily formed after spray-wall impingement and ignition probability increased too. The results of this study could contribute as basic resources of spark-ignited direct injection LPG and CNG engine design and optimization extensively.
