A challenge faced by smart grid systems is providing highly reliable transmissions to better serve different types of electrical applications and improve the energy efficiency of the system. Although wireless networking technologies can provide high-speed and cost-effective solutions, their performance may be impaired by various factors that affect the reliability of smart grid networks. Here, we first suggest the use of IEEE 802.11s-based wireless LAN mesh networks as high-speed wireless backbone networks for smart grid infrastructure to provide high scalability and flexibility while ensuring low installation and management costs. Thereafter, we analyze some vital problems of the IEEE 802.11s default routing protocol (named hybrid wireless mesh protocol; HWMP) from the perspective of transfer reliability, and propose appropriate solutions with a new routing method called HWMP-reliability enhancement to improve the routing reliability of 802.11s-based smart grid mesh networking. A simulation study using ns-3 was conducted to demonstrate the superiority of the proposed schemes.

Recently, a lot of research for the smart grid technology have been carried out to achieve energy efficiency for the electronic products. In order to practically apply this study, smart instruments which are capable of the AMI (Advanced Metering Infrastructure) and DR (Demand Response) function are necessary. However, it is difficult to apply the function of the smart grid to the electronic product that cannot support the smart grid. Accordingly, the efficient use of electric energy is impossible. In order to solve this problem, the electronic product has to be changed into the exclusive electronic product supporting smart grid technology or the smart controller has to be attached the outside of the device. In this study, we developed the smart controller for connecting the electric appliances to the smart grid system. It can be attached to the illumination and the smart grid-based lamp control system at home. We additionally designed the message frame and the protocol to operate the smart controller with the AMI based EMS (Energy Management Server). We developed an experimental system to practically verify functions of the smart controller which is attached to the lighting device. From the system, we showed that the electric source of the illumination can be controlled according to the load change and saved energy effectively. We also confirmed the structural benefit and the energy-efficient effect through the verification of the smart controller.

Smart grid is a next-generation intelligent power grid that applying ICT to power grid to maximize the energy efficiency ratio. Recently, technologies and standards for smart grid are being developed around the world. Information security which is an essential part of smart grid development has to be managed continuously. Information security management system certification for organizational risk management has been implemented in Korea. Although preparation for information security management system certification which is applicable to smart grid is considered, there are no specific methods. This paper is to propose core and added evaluation criteria for Korean smart grid based on K-ISMS through comparative analysis between ISMS operated in Korea and smart grid information security management system developed in the United States. Added evaluation criteria enable smart grid related business that certified existing ISMS to minimize redundant and unnecessary certification assessment work.
In developing countries especially in African continent, rapid population growth in cities is a major concern. Majority of governments in Africa have made more effort to develop urban areas as compared to the rural ones. Social and economic activities are more concentrated in urban areas. This is a pushing factor for the rapid population growth in cities as many people, especially young generation, tend to migrate from rural to urban. This growth leads to excessive exploitation of natural resources, environmental degradation and increased pressure on social services. Rapid increased population acts as an encouragement to construct smart cities for achieving needs for present and future generations. Tanzania as one of the developing countries in Africa has taken initiatives in establishing smart cities. The aim of this study therefore, is to examine opportunities and challenges in the development of Smart cities in Tanzania with a case study of Mbeya city. In addition, conceptualization about development of smart cities is proposed to prioritize the planning of smart grid among other smart city infrastructure systems. Conclusively, Mbeya city has a full potential of many strengths and opportunities for successful development as a smart city.

Considerable number of major countries have put great efforts to leverage the efficiency of power consumption using Smart Grid in order to resolve the critical issues with drastical growing demands regarding electricity, the crisis of environmental pollution and so on. There has been increasing number of researches to construct Smart Grid in Korea as well. The threats of cyber terror attacks which might cause national crisises in terms of economy and society have been climbing up because of the fact that Smart Grid employs bi-directional communications embedding the cyber threats from existing/legacy communication networks. Consequently, it is required to build concrete response processes including investigation and analysis on cyber breaches into Smart Grid. However, the digital evidence acquisition techniques do not suffice to be deployed in Smart Grid systems despite of the fact that the techniques, against cyber breaches into well-known networks, have been studied in plenty of time. This work proposes a novel digital evidence acquisition scheme appropriate to Smart Grid systems through intensive investigation of the evidence acquisition requirements in Smart Grid and the historical evidence acquisition methods.

We present the concept of applying Wireless Mesh Networking (WMN) technology into Smart Grid, which is recently rising as a potential technology in various areas thanks to its advantages such as low installation costs, high scalability, and high flexibility. Smart Grid is an intelligent, next-generation electrical power network that can maximize energy efficiency by monitoring utility information in real-time and controlling the flow of electricity with IT communications technology converged to the existing power grid. WMNs must be designed for Smart Grid communication systems considering not only the high level of reliability, QoS support and mass-data treatment but also the properties of the traditional power grid. In addition, it is essential to design techniques based on international standards to support interoperability and scalability. In this paper, we evaluate the performance of IEEE 802.11s based Smart Grid Mesh Networks by conducting preliminary simulation studies with the ns-3 simulator. We also outline some challenging issues that should be reviewed when considering WMNs as the candidate for Smart Grid communication infrastructure.

ISO/IEC 15118 is a standard for communications and services for electric vehicle charging infrastructure. Although this standard deals only with data communication between an electric vehicle and a charge station, communication with the outside is essential for establishing an authentication system for vehicle certification and V2G service for electric power transmission. In this study, it was designed to verify the information of electric car charging infrastructure in electric power system through communication link between ISO/IEC 15118 electric vehicle model and IEC 61850 standard MMS protocol. This is demonstrated in the field so that the electric vehicle communication data is linked with the micro grid management system. This could be used as an element technology in other distributed power sources as well as electric cars in the future.
Present electric grids are advanced to integrate smart grids, distributed resources, high-speed sensing and control, and other advanced metering technologies. Cybersecurity is one of the challenges of the smart grid and nuclear plant digital system. It affects the advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), for grid data communication and controls the information in real-time. The research article is emphasized solving the nuclear and smart grid hardware security issues with the integration of field programmable gate array (FPGA), and implementing the latest Time Authenticated Cryptographic Identity Transmission (TACIT) cryptographic algorithm in the chip. The cryptographic-based encryption and decryption approach can be used for a smart grid distribution system embedding with FPGA hardware. The chip design is carried in Xilinx ISE 14.7 and synthesized on Virtex-5 FPGA hardware. The state of the art of work is that the algorithm is implemented on FPGA hardware that provides the scalable design with different key sizes, and its integration enhances the grid hardware security and switching. It has been reported by similar state-of-the-art approaches, that the algorithm was limited in software, not implemented in a hardware chip. The main finding of the research work is that the design predicts the utilization of hardware parameters such as slices, LUTs, flip-flops, memory, input/output blocks, and timing information for Virtex-5 FPGA synthesis before the chip fabrication. The information is extracted for 8-bit to 128-bit key and grid data with initial parameters. TACIT security chip supports 400 MHz frequency for 128-bit key. The research work is an effort to provide the solution for the industries working towards embedded hardware security for the smart grid, power plants, and nuclear applications.
Recently the existing one-way electricity system that combines information and communications technology to develop smart grid technology is made active. The core infrastructure of the smart grid, AMI smart meters to AMR system, the amount of power measured at the top to MDMS transmits data store. Smart meters utilizing information and communication technology to transfer data and power because of the existing security threats are expected, including the additional security threats. It exposes the privacy of consumers and industrial systems, such as paralysis is likely to result in the loss. In this paper to respond to these security threats in the environment smart grid. Also, We propose data transfer methods between smartmeter and MDMS and between home device and MDMS.

With response to the critical issue of global warming, Smart Grid system has been extensively investigated as next efficient power grid system. Domestically, Korean is trying to expand the usage of Electric Vehicles (EVs) and the charging infrastructure in order to replace the current transportation using fossil fuels holding 20% of overall CO2 emission. The EVs charging infrastructures are combined with IT technologies to build intelligent environments but have considerable number of cyber security issues because of its inherent nature of the technologies. This work not only provides logical architecture of EV charging infrastructures with security threats based on them but also analyses security requirements against security threats in order to overcome the adversarial activities to Smart Grid.
