An outrigger damper system has been proposed to reduce dynamic responses of tall buildings. In previous studies, an outrigger damper system was optimally designed to decrease a wind-induced or earthquake-induced dynamic response. When an outrigger damper system is optimally designed for wind excitation, its control performance for seismic excitation deteriorates. Therefore, a smart outrigger damper system is proposed in this study to make a control system that can simultaneously reduce both wind and seismic responses. A smart outrigger system is made up of MR (Magnetorheological) dampers. A fuzzy logic control algorithm (FLC) was used to generate command voltages sent for smart outrigger damper system and the FLC was optimized by genetic algorithm. This study shows that the smart outrigger system can provide good control performance for reduction of both wind and earthquake responses compared to the general outrigger system.
This paper reported test of full-scale cables attached with four types of dampers: viscous damper, passive Magneto-Rheological (MR) damper, friction damper and High Damping Rubber (HDR) damper. The logarithmic decrements of the cable with attached dampers were calculated from free vibration time history. The efficiency ratios of the mean damping ratios of the tested four dampers to theoretical maximum damping ratio were derived, which was very important for practical damper design and parameter optimization. Non-ideal factors affecting damper performance were discussed based on the test results. The effects of concentrated mass and negative stiffness were discussed in detail and compared theoretically. Approximate formulations were derived and verified using numerical solutions. The critical values for non-dimensional concentrated mass coefficient and negative stiffness were identified. Efficiency ratios were approximately 0.6, 0.6, and 0.3 for the viscous damper, passive MR damper and HDR damper, respectively. The efficiency ratio for the friction damper was between 0-1.0. The effects of concentrated mass and negative stiffness on cable damping were positive as both could increase damping ratio; the concentrated mass was more effective than negative stiffness for higher vibration modes.

An outrigger system is used widely to increase the lateral stiffness of high-rise buildings, resulting in reduced dynamic responses to seismic or wind loads. Because the dynamic characteristics of earthquake or wind loads are quite different, a smart vibration control system associated with an outrigger system can be used effectively for both seismic and wind excitation. In this study, an adaptive smart structural control system based on an outrigger damper system was investigated for the response reduction of multi-hazards, including seismic and wind loads. A MR damper was employed to develop the smart outrigger damper system. Three cities in the U.S., L.A., Charleston, and Anchorage, were used to generate multi-hazard earthquake and wind loads. Parametric studies on the MR damper capacity were performed to investigate the optimal design of the smart outrigger damper system. A smart control algorithm was developed using a fuzzy controller optimized by a genetic algorithm. The analytical results showed that an adaptive smart structural control system based on an outrigger damper system can provide good control performance for multi-hazards of earthquake and wind loads.
As the magnitude and frequency of earthquakes increase in Korea, interest in earthquake damage reduction technology has increased. Therefore, research on vibration damping devices that directly respond to seismic loads is being actively researched. After an earthquake, damage or destruction of the device occurs due to the yield of materials, and thus it takes considerable cost and time for restoration and replacement. To supplement the problems of the existing earthquake damage reduction technology, a study was conducted on the recentering smart damper that can be used continuously after an earthquake. In this study, the recentering smart damper that can be restored to its original shape after load removal was developed using superelastic shape memory alloy, pre-compressed polyurethane. General steel was commonly applied to verify the seismic performance of the superelastic shape memory alloy, and the performance of the smart damper was verified according to the amount of polyurethane pre-compressed
The effectiveness of the newly developed smart passive control system employing a magnetorheological (MR) damper and an electromagnetic induction (EMI) part for seismic protection of base isolated structures is numerically investigated. An EMI part in the system consists of a permanent magnet and a coil, which changes the kinetic energy of the deformation of an MR damper into the electric energy (i.e. the induced current) according to the Faraday's law of electromagnetic induction. In the smart passive control system, the damping characteristics of an MR damper are varied with the current input generated from an EMI part. Hence, it does not need any control system consisting of sensors, a controller and an external power source. This makes the system much simpler as well as more economic. To verify the efficacy of the smart passive control system, a series of numerical simulations are carried out by considering the benchmark base isolated structure control problems. The numerical simulation results show that the smart passive control system has the comparable control performance to the conventional MR damper-based semiactive control system. Therefore, the smart passive control system could be considered as one of the promising control devices for seismic protection of seismically excited base isolated structures.

The aim of this research is to develop a new method to use magnetorheological (MR) damper for vibration control. It is a new way to achieve the MR damper response without the need to have detailed constant parameters estimations. The methodology adopted in designing the control structure in this work is based on the experimental results. In order to investigate and understand the behaviour of an MR damper, an experiment is first conducted. Force-displacement and force-velocity responses with varying current have been established to model the MR damper. The force for upward and downward motions of the damper piston is found to be increasing with current and velocity. In cyclic motion, which is the combination of upward and downward motions of the piston, the force with hysteresis behaviour is seen to be increasing with current. In addition, the energy dissipated is also found to be linear with current. A proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller, based on the established characteristics for a quarter car suspension model, has been adapted in this study. A fuzzy rule based PID controller (F-PID) is opted to achieve better response for a varying frequency input. The outcome of this study can be used in the modelling of MR damper and applied to control engineering. Moreover, the identified behaviour can help in further development of the MR damper technology.
Long steel stay cables, which are mainly used in cable-stayed bridges, are easy to vibrate because of their low inherent damping characteristics. A lot of methods for vibration reduction of stay cables have been developed, and several techniques of them have been implemented to real structures, though each has its limitations. Recently, it was reported that smart (i.e. semi-active) dampers can potentially achieve performance levels nearly the same as comparable active devices with few of the detractions. Some numerical and experimental studies on the application of smart damping systems employing an MR fluid damper, which is one of the most promising smart dampers, to a stay cable were carried out; however, most of the previous studies considered only one specific control algorithm in which they are interested. In this study, the performance verification of MR fluid damper-based smart damping systems for mitigating vibration of stay cables by considering the four commonly used semi-active control algorithms, such as the control algorithm based on Lyapunov stability theory, the maximum energy dissipation algorithm, the modulated homogeneous friction algorithm and the clipped-optimal control algorithm, is systematically carried out to find the most appropriate control strategy for the cable-damper system.

A smart tuned mass damper (TMD) is widely studied for seismic response reduction of various structures. Control algorithm is the most important factor for control performance of a smart TMD. This study used a Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (DDPG) among reinforcement learning techniques to develop a control algorithm for a smart TMD. A magnetorheological (MR) damper was used to make the smart TMD. A single mass model with the smart TMD was employed to make a reinforcement learning environment. Time history analysis simulations of the example structure subject to artificial seismic load were performed in the reinforcement learning process. Critic of policy network and actor of value network for DDPG agent were constructed. The action of DDPG agent was selected as the command voltage sent to the MR damper. Reward for the DDPG action was calculated by using displacement and velocity responses of the main mass. Groundhook control algorithm was used as a comparative control algorithm. After 10,000 episode training of the DDPG agent model with proper hyper-parameters, the semi-active control algorithm for control of seismic responses of the example structure with the smart TMD was developed. The simulation results presented that the developed DDPG model can provide effective control algorithms for smart TMD for reduction of seismic responses.
An extensive numerical investigation on the magnetorheological (MR) damper-based smart passive control system for mitigating vibration of stay cables under wind loads has been conducted. The smart passive system is incorporated with an electromagnetic induction (EMI) device for reducing complexity of the conventional MR damper based semi-active control system by eliminating an external power supply part and a feedback control part (i.e., sensors and controller). In this study, the control performance of the smart passive system has been evaluated by using a cable structure model extracted from a full-scale long stay cable with high tension. Numerical simulation results of the proposed smart damping system are compared with those of the passive and semi-active control systems employing MR dampers. It is demonstrated from the results that the control performance of the smart passive control system is better than those of the passive control cases and comparable to those of the semi-active control systems in the forced vibration analysis as well as the free vibration analysis, even though there is no external power source in the smart passive system.

Vibration mitigation of cables or hangers is one of the crucial problems for cable supported bridges. Previous research focused on the behaviors of cable with dampers or crossties, which could help engineering community apply these mitigation devices more efficiently. However, less studies are available for hybrid applied cross-ties and dampers, especially lack of both analytical and experimental verifications. This paper studied damping and frequency of two parallel identical cables with a connection cross-tie and an attached damper. The characteristic equation of system was derived based on transfer matrix method. The complex characteristic equation was numerically solved to find the solutions. Effects of non-dimensional spring stiffness and location on the maximum cable damping, the corresponding optimum damper constant and the corresponding frequency of lower vibration mode were further addressed. System with twin small-scale cables with a cross-link and a viscous damper were tested. The damping and frequency from the test were very close to the analytical ones. The two branches of solutions: in-phase modes and the out-of-phase modes, were identified; and the two branches of solutions were different for damping and frequency behaviors.
