This paper deals with asymptotic stabilization problems for linear systems with time-varying input disturbances. In order to eliminate the influence of a disturbance on the system, a disturbance observer is designed and the time-varying disturbance can be rejected using its estimated value. Since the disturbance observer is kind of low-pass filter, it has inevitably estimation errors. To eliminate the inflences on the performance due to these errors, the additional control is designed based on these estimation errors using a well-known min-max control method. It is shown that the asymptotic stability of the closed-loop system is guaranteed. In general, the min-max control method requires the switching of control inputs and the switching magnitude of the control input is determined by the disturbance estimation error bounds. As the error bounds can be made arbitrarily small by choosing the high gain for the disturbance observer, the control method suggested in this paper can reduce the chattering phenomena as small as possible. Therefore, it has superior performance to the existing ones.
This paper deals with robust control problems of linear systems with matched nonlinear uncertainties. In order to handle the uncertainties, a Lyapunov min-max control approach can usually be adopted. By the way, the min-max control input is required to be switched and provokes chattering phenomena which limit the practical implementation. The magnitude of switching control input which cause chattering is dependent on the size of uncertainties. In this paper, it is shown that the magnitude of the min-max control input can be made small using a well-known disturbance observer technique and only considers the disturbance observing errors. The chattering phenomena can be reduced as small as possible by selecting a high diturbance observer gain. The simulations show that the min-max control with a disturbance observer can reduce chattering phenomena much smaller and guarantee much better robust performance rather than the one without a disturbance observer.
This paper deals with a robust controller design problem for a small one-link robot arm system subject to input time delay and load variations. The uncertain parameters of the system are considered as a disturbance input. A disturbance observer(DOB) has been designed to alleviate disturbance effects and to compensate performance degradation owing to the time-delay. This paper employs a new DOB structure for non-minimum phase systems together with the Smith predictor. We propose a new controller for reducing the both effects of disturbance and time-delay. In order to test the performance of proposed controller, four different other control laws are compared with the proposed one by computer simulations. The simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed control method.
A motor cylinder is widely used as an apparatus for transportation of a small scale load. It is, however, difficult for only one motor cylinder to transfer a large scale load such as a weir. The large scale load is transferred by two motor cylinders which are mounted on right and left of load itself. In this case, the displacement difference generated between two motor cylinders, namely, the synchronous error has a bad influence on the transportation. In this study, a synchronous control system is designed to restrain synchronous error caused by skew disturbance. The control system is composed of two disturbance observers and one synchronous controller. Each disturbance observer is designed to restrain the skew disturbance. And the synchronous controller is designed to achieve stable and accurate synchronization. Finally, the simulation results show that the designed control system is effective for the skew disturbance which lead to synchronous error.
A controller is proposed for the robust adaptive backstepping control of a class of uncertain nonlinear systems using nonlinear disturbance observer (NDO). The NDO is applied to estimate the time-varying lumped disturbance in each step, but a disturbance observer error does not converge to zero since the derivative of lumped disturbance is not zero. Then the fuzzy neural network (FNN) is presented to estimate the disturbance observer error such that the outputs of the system are proved to converge to a small neighborhood of the desired trajectory. The proposed control scheme guarantees that all the signals in the closed-loop are semiglobally uniformly ultimately bounded on the basis of the Lyapunov theorem. Simulation results are presented to illustrate the effectiveness and the applicability of the approaches proposed.
Recently, the disturbance caused by an optical disk vibration and the external vibration/shock are more serious problem in an optical disk drives (ODD) as an ODD become small size and rotation speed increases. The conventional controller cannot cope with the mentioned problems properly when the disturbance and vibration are larger than some range. Therefore, we propose a new control scheme using a disturbance observer (DOB) and it can control the aforementioned problems. The designed the controller is applied to a commercial ODD in focusing direction, then its validity is proved by experimental method. By rising the disturbance observer theory, the focusing performance is conspicuously improved in the presence of sinusoidal vibrations or a shock disturbance. This algorithm also applies to a tracking structure also, because focusing structure is very similar to it.
In this paper, a dual stage servo mechanism has been developed for image tracking system to improve control performances such as small rise time, small overshoot, small settling time, small stabilization error etc. A secondary stage, a platform, actuated by a pair of electro-magnets is mounted on a conventional elevation gimbal. In this mechanism, the gimbal provides large range but slow motion and the platform provides small range but fast positioning. A sliding mode control is applied to the platform positioning to attain robust performances and stability in the presence of the disturbance related to dynamic coupling of the gimbal and the platform. Results from experiments illustrate that the suggested dual stage mechanism controlled by the sliding mode control is effective in improving responses and attenuating the disturbance response related with dynamic coupling.

A novel robust $H_{\infty}$ switching tracking control design method with disturbance observer is proposed for the near space interceptor (NSI) with aerodynamic fins and reaction jets. Initially, the flight envelop of the NSI is divided into small subregions, and a slow-fast loop polytopic linear parameter varying (LPV) model is proposed, to approximate the nonlinear dynamic of the NSI, based on the Jacobian linearization and Tensor-Product (T-P) model transformation approach. A disturbance observer is then constructed, to estimate the modeled disturbance. Subsequently, based on the descriptor system method, a robust switching controller is developed, to ensure that the closed-loop descriptor system is stable with a desired $H_{\infty}$ disturbance attenuation level. Furthermore, the outcome of the proposed switching tracking control problem is formulated as a set of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). Finally, simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed design method.
Disturbance regime and tree regeneration were studied in kwangnung natural forest, an old-growth deciduous hardwood forest located in central korea. This forest is dominated by carpinus laxiflora, c.erosa, and quercus species. The area occupied by canopy gaps was 4.6% of the total forested area, and the mean size of canopy gaps was 92 $m^2$ with the maximum being 524 $m^2$. More than half of the gaps were less than four years old, and 3/4 of the gaps were created by death of only or two canopy trees, indicating the dominance of small-sized gaps in kwangnung forest. about half of the gap-makers were c. laxiflora, and another one third were quercus species. In contrast, the most frequent relacers were c. laxiflora while quercus species filled only 5% of the gaps, suggesting a future shift in tree species composition under the current disturbance regime. tree regeration was more conspicuous even in small gaps than non-gaps regardless of shade-tolerance of tree species, indicating the importance of gaps in tree regeneration.
The basis for determining hearing disturbance adopted by the Life Insurance Industry is the loss of hearing power above 80 db on either or both sides, in accordance with the divide sixth method of audiometric test. Different types of small-to-medium-sized enterprises were chosen for the study of the extent of loss and the power of hearing. The following are the findings: 1. The disturbance percentage found among the types of occupation and different levels of age was found to be higher as the subject's ages increased. 2. The heavier the workload and the noisier the environment, the higher the percentage of disturbance. The average percentage of the subjects turned out to be 24.35%. Those engaged in sawing and wood-work showed 49%. Those engaged in machinery and equipment for transportation accounted for 42.6%. Those engaged in the metal products occupied 39.6%. The disturbance percentage among those engaged in such noisy works as press, pipe and sawing showed 32.52%. 28.46% of those workers with three to four years employment turned out to be disturbed in hearing. Of these, a high percentage of 43.9% showed disturbance in conversation or talk. 3. No hearing loss due to occupation beyond the Life Insurance standard of 80 db was found; therefore, the present status poses no problem. Constant attention, however, is needed.
