It is very improtant to evaluate the reliable nonlinear deformational characteristics of soils not only in the analysis of geotechnical structures under working stress conditions but also for the soil dynamic problems. Field testings such as crosshole and pressuremeter tests can be used to determine the modulus of soils under in-situ conditions, but it is not possible to determine the modulus over the entire strain amplitude range. Laboratory methods such as resonant column 1 torsional shear test can be used to determine the modulus over the whole strain amplitude range, but it is very difficult to obtain the representative undisturbed samples on the sixte. For the reliable evaluation of nonlinear deformation characteristics of soils on a typical site, small strain modulus obtained from field testy and nomalized modulus reduction curve determined by laboratory bests need to be combined. In this paper, laboratory and Held testy were performed at a sixte which consisted of granite wearthered residual boils to evaluate the nonlinear deformational characteristics of coils such as the effects of strain amplitude, loading frequency, confining pressure and sample disturbance. It has been shorn that when the effects of these factors are properly taken into account, the stiffness values evaluated by various field and labrotary tests are comparable to each other fairly well. Finally, the procedure to evaluate the nonlinear deformstional characteristics of the sixte was proposed.
In this study, dynamic deformation characteristics of sands under dry, saturated drained and undrained conditions were investigated at small to intermediate strains using the modified Stokoe-type torsional shear tests. The equipment was modified to saturate the specimen and to maintain the B-value above 0.99 during the test. On two types of sands, Geumgang sand from Korea and Toyoura sand from Japan, tests were carried out at various drainage conditions, void ratios, and effective confining pressures. Based on the test results, dynamic deformation characteristics, shear modulus (G) and damping ratio (D), and/or pore-water pressure were measured with strain amplitude and number of loading cycles. Variations of G and D at small ($\gamma_c<{10}^{-3}\%$) to medium (${10}^{-3}\%<\gamma_c<{10}^{-1}\%$) strains were measured under various drainage conditions, and test results were intensively compared considering drainage conditions.

The stress-strain behavior of soils can usually be regarded as non-linear, while it is also known that the soil exhibits the linear-elastic behavior at pre-failure state (very small strain range, $<10^{-3}%$). This study aims to analyze the variation of anisotropic elastic shear moduli of granular soils in various stress conditions. The stress probe experiments with the triaxial testing device equipped with local strain gages and multi-directional bender elements were conducted. When the stress ratio exceeds the range between -0.5 and 1.5, the elastic shear stiffness in the axial direction deviates from the empirical correlation with current stresses, which indicates that the yielding of soils alters the internal pathway through which the elastic shear wave propagates. The experimental results show that the variation of elastic shear moduli in the horizontal direction closely relates to the volume change of soils.
The objective of the present study is to systematically characterize a linear viscoelastic behavior of petroleum jelly in small amplitude oscillatory shear flow fields correspondent to the rheological ground state. With this aim, using a strain-controlled rheometer, the dynamic viscoelastic properties of commercially available petroleum jelly have been measured at $37^{\circ}C$ (body temperature) over a wide range of angular frequencies at an extremely small strain amplitude of 0.1 %. In this article, the linear viscoelastic behavior was reported in detail and then explained from a structural view-point of petroleum jelly and discussed in depth with respect to the consumer's requirements. Main findings obtained from this study can be summarized as follows : (1) The storage modulus is always greater than the loss modulus over an entire range of angular frequencies studied, meaning that the linear viscoelastic behavior of petroleum jelly is dominated by an elastic nature rather than a viscous nature. (2) Petroleum jelly shows a desirable linear viscoelastic behavior with respect to the consumer's requirements because it is undesirable for the product to flow down from the skin at an initial stage upon contact with the human skin. (3) A fractional derivative model shows an excellent applicability to describe a linear viscoelastic behavior of petroleum jelly. However, this model should be used with a special caution because there exists no physical meaning for the model parameters. (4) A modified form of the Cox-Merz rule gives a good ability to predict the relationship between steady shear flow properties (nonlinear behavior) and dynamic viscoelastic properties (linear behavior) for petroleum jelly.

Engineered mixtures, which consist of rigid sand particles and soft fine-grained rubber particles, are tested to characterize their small and large-strain responses. Engineered soils are prepared with different volumetric sand fraction, sf, to identify the transition from a rigid to a soft granular skeleton using wave propagation, $K_{o}-loading$, and triaxial testing. Deformation moduli at small, middle and large-strain do not change linearly with the volume fraction of rigid particles; instead, deformation moduli increase dramatically when the sand fraction exceeds a threshold value between sf=0.6 to 0.8 that marks the formation of a percolating network of stiff particles. The friction angle increases with the volume fraction of rigid particles. Conversely, the axial strain at peak strength increases with the content of soft particles, and no apparent peak strength is observed in specimens when sand fraction is less than 60%. The presence of soft particles alters the formation of force chains. While soft particles are not part of high-load carrying chains, they play the important role of preventing the buckling of stiff particle chains.
This paper proposes a numerical methodology for capturing the complete curve of a pressuremeter test including initial or disturbed parts and loops through a stiffness-based approach adopted in three dimensional finite difference code, FLAC3D. In order to enable this, a new hyperbolic model was used to replace the conventional linear elastic model prior to peak strength of Mohr-Coulomb soil model and update or degradation of shear modulus was considered. Presented modeling approach and implemented constitutive model are impressively successful. It leads to obtain the whole set of parameters for characterizing sands and seems promising for modeling the most of geotechnical structures.
The behaviors of saturated soils such as compressibility and permeability are distinguished by preconsolidation stress. Preconsolidation stress becomes an important design parameter in geotechnical structures. The goal of this study is to introduce a new method for the evaluation of preconsolidation stress based on the shear wave velocity at small strain, using Busan, Incheon, and Gwangyang clays in Korea. Standard consolidation tests are conducted by using an oedometer cell equipped with bender elements. The preconsolidation stresses estimated by shear wave velocity are compared with those evaluated by the Casagrande, constrained modulus, work, and logarithmic methods. The preconsolidation stresses estimated by the shear wave velocity produce very similar values to those evaluated by the Onitsuka method (one of the logarithmic methods), which yields an almost real preconsolidation stress. This study shows that the shear wave velocity method provides a reliable method for evaluating preconsolidation stress and can be used as a complementary method.
Soils naturally contain grains of different minerals which may be dissolved under chemical or physical processes. The dissolution leads changes in microstructure of particulate media, such as an increase in local void or permeability, which affects the strength and deformation of soils. This study focuses on the small strain stiffness characteristics of vanishing mixtures, which consist of sand and salt particles at different volume fractions. Experiments are carried out in a conventional oedometer cell (Ko-loading) integrated with bender elements for the measurement of shear waves. Dissolutions of particles are implemented by saturating the mixtures at various confining stresses. Axial deformation and shear waves are recorded after each loading stage and during dissolution process. Experimental results show that after dissolution, the vertical strain and the void ratio increase, while the shear wave velocity and small strain shear modulus decrease. The decrease of the velocity results from the void ratio increase and particle contact decrease. The process monitoring during dissolution of the particles shows that the vertical strain dramatically increases at the beginning of the saturation process and converges after vanishing process finishes, and that the shear wave velocity decreases at the beginning and increases due to the particle reorientation. Specimens prepared by sand and salt particles are proved to be able to provide a valuable insight in macro structural behaviors of the vanishings mixtures.
Various type of in-situ and laboratary tests were performed in order to evaluate the stiffness of sedimentary soft rock. In triaxial compression tests of sedimentary soft rocks, axial strains from the axial displacement of the loading piston or specimen cap conventionally were considerably larger than those measured. tocally on the lateral surfaces of specimen, due to the bedding errors at the top and bottom ends of a specimen. A local deformation transducer was used to measure axial strains free from the bedding error ranging from 0.001% to about 1%. In ultra-sonic wave tests, the elastic modulus of unconfined spec imens was smaller than that of confined specimens, due probably to microfracks. Young's modulus Ed from ultra-sonic wave tests and those at small local strains from triaxial tests were similar, both of which agreed very well with Young's modulus Er from field shear wave velocities. Young'a modulus from the field behaviour was virtually similar to that obtained by reducing Er based on the strain level-dependency of stiffness evaluated by the triaxial tests.

In this study, a relationship between small-strain shear modulus ($G_{max}$) and overconsolidation ratio (OCR) based on shear wave velocity ($V_S$) measurement was established to identify the stress history of centrifuge model ground. A centrifuge test was conducted in various centrifugal acceleration levels including loading and unloading sequences to cause various stress histories on centrifuge model ground. The $V_S$ and vertical effective stress were measured at each level of acceleration. Then, a sensitivity analysis was conducted using testing data to ensure the suitability of OCR function for the tested cohesionless soils and found that OCR can be estimated based on $V_S$ measurements irrespective of normally-consolidated or overconsolidated loading conditions. Finally, the developed $G_{max}$-OCR relationship was applied to centrifuge models constructed and tested under various induced stress-history conditions. Through a series of tests, it was concluded that the induced stress history on centrifuge model by compaction, g-level variation, and past overburden load can be analysed quantitatively, and it is convinced that the OCR evaluation technique will contribute to better interpret the centrifuge test results.
