  • This paper describes the design processes and evaluation results of a small-sized six-axis force/torque sensor. The new six-axis force/torque sensor including S-type structure has been developed using a parallel plate structure as a basic sensing element. In order tominimize coupling errors, the location of strain gages has been determined based on the finite element analysis and the connections of strain gages have been made such that the bridge circuit with 4 strain gages becomes balanced. Several design modifications result in a similar strain sensitivity for six-axis forces and moments, and the reduced coupling errors of 2.6% FS between each forces and moments. Calibration test results show that the six-axis load cell developed which has light weight of 135g and the maximum capacities of 196 N in forces and 19.6 N.m in moments is estimated to be within 7.1% FS in coupling error.

  • The effects of DNA polymerase $\beta$ on the somatic chromosome mutations and mitotic recombinations were investigated using the transgenic Drosophila beating chimetic gene consisting of a promoter region of Drosophila actin 5C gene and rat DNA polymerase $\beta$. For detecting the somatic chromosome mutations and mitotic recombinations, the heterozygous (mwh/+) strains possessing or lacking transgene poi 13 were used. The spontaneous frequency of small mwh spots, due to deletion or nondisjunction etc., in the non-transgenic w strain and the transgenic p[pol $\beta$]-130 strain was 0.351 and 0.606, respectively. The spontaneous frequency (0.063) of large mwh spots, arises mostly from somatic recombination between the centromere and the locus mwh, in the transgenic p[pol $\beta$]-130 strain was about three times higher than that (0.021) of the non-transgenic w strain. The mutant clone frequencies of small and large mwh spots induced by N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine and ethyl methanesulfonate in the transformant p[pol $\beta$]-130 were higher than those in the host strain w. The present results suggest that rat DNA polymerase $\beta$ participate at least in the somatic chromosome mutations and mitotic recombination processes.

  • In this study, finite element analysis is performed for consolidation behavior prediction of drainage-installed soft deposits. Finite element analysis is performed under the two strain conditions as small strain with limited application and large strain for relatively thick layers, large deformation and non-linear material properties. The analysis conditions such as layer depth, loading conditions, smear effects are also changed and variation of consolidation behavior for each condition is estimated from ABAQUS program.

  • The high temperature deformation behavior of $SiC_p/Al-Si$ composites and Al-Si matrix was studied by hot torsion test in a range of temperature from $270^{\circ}C$ to $520^{\circ}C$ and at strain rate range of $1.2{\times}10_{-3}~2.16{\times}10_{-1}/sec$. The hot restoration mechanisms for both matrix and composites were found to be dynamic recrystallization(DRX) from the investigation of flow curves and microstructural evolutions. The Si precipitates and SiC particles promoted DRX, and the peak strain$({\varepsilon}_p)$ of the composites was smaller than that of the matrix. Flow stresses of $SiC_p/Al-Si$ composites were found to be generally higher than the matrix, but the difference was quite small at higher temperature due to the decrease of capability of load transfer by SiC particles. With increasing temperature, failure strain of matrix and composites are inclined to increase, the increasing value of failure strain for the $SiC_p/Al-Si$ composites was small compared to that of matrix. The stress dependence of both materials on strain rate() and temperature(T) was examined by hyperbolic sine law, $\.{\varepsilon}=A_1[sinh({\alpha}{\cdot}{\sigma})]_n$exp(-Q/RT)

  • Small size antibiotic resistance plasmids having molecular weights less than 10 Mdal were isolated and characterized from ten clinically isolated multiple resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Agarose gel electrophoresis profiles and antibiotic resistance patterns divided these strains into four groups. Strain 2-23-6, the representative strain of a group of five strains conferred two plasmids of molecular weights $1.6{\times}10^6\;dal\;and\;2.0{\times}10^6$ dal. The small plasmid (pSBK 112) specified macrolides, lincosamides and streptogramin type B (MLS) resistance gene which are expressed constitutively. Lage plasmid (pSBK 125) specified chloramphenicol resistance gene which is inducible. Strain 10-5 conferred a $3.0{\times}10^6$ dal plasmid (pSBK 141) which carry an inducible ampicillin resistance gene and strain P-H-2 conferred and $1.6{\times}10^6$ dal plasmid (pSBK 190) which carry a constitutive MLS resistance gene. Strain D-H-1 conferred four plasmids of molecular weights $0.8{\times}10^6$ dal (pSBK 201), $1.6{\times}10^6$ dal (pSBK 202), $2.5{\times}10^6$ dal (pSBK 203), and $1.2{\times}10^7$ dal (pDBK 204), respectively. Among those four plasmids, only pSBK 203 specified chloramphenicol resistance gene. Curing of constitutive MLS resistance using acriding orange or ethidium bromide in 2-23-6 and P-H-2 strains produced 'inducible' MLS resistance strains which are less resistant to MLS than the wild type strains, suggesting that there are two resistance genes in both strains; one is constitutive and the other is inducible.

  • The present work deals with an investigation on longitudinal wave propagation in nanobeams made of graphene sheets, for the first time. The nanobeam is modelled via a higher-order shear deformation theory accounts for both higher-order and thickness stretching terms. The general nonlocal strain gradient theory including nonlocality and strain gradient characteristics of size-dependency in order is used to examine the small-scale effects. This model has three-small scale coefficients in which two of them are for nonlocality and one of them applied for gradient effects. Hamilton supposition is applied to obtain the governing motion equation which is solved using a harmonic solution procedure. It is indicated that the longitudinal wave characteristics of the nanobeams are significantly influenced by the nonlocal parameters and strain gradient parameter. It is shown that higher nonlocal parameter is more efficient than lower nonlocal parameter to change longitudinal phase velocities, while the strain gradient parameter is the determining factor for their efficiency on the results.

  • Based on the nonlocal strain gradient (NSG) theory and considering the influence of moment of inertia, the governing equations of motion of porous functionally graded (FG) nanoplates with four edges clamped are established; The Galerkin method is applied to eliminate the spatial variables of the partial differential equation, and the partial differential governing equation is transformed into an ordinary differential equation with time variables. By satisfying the boundary conditions and solving the characteristic equation, the dispersion relations of the porous FG strain gradient nanoplates with four edges fixed are obtained. It is found that when the wave number is very small, the influences of nonlocal parameters and strain gradient parameters on the dispersion relation is very small. However, when the wave number is large, it has a great influence on the group velocity and phase velocity. The nonlocal parameter represents the effect of stiffness softening, and the strain gradient parameter represents the effect of stiffness strengthening. In addition, we also study the influence of power law index parameter and porosity on guided wave propagation.

  • On a refrigeration compressor, damage of a discharge valve is one of the annoying troubles for an engineer. Small size compressors, having ring plate type discharge valve are recently used. Therefore, it is very important for engineers to measure and analyze strains of discharge valve. The purpose of this study is to obtain the basic data of the strain of the flexible ring valve. Measurements were performed by the strain gauge bonded on the surface of the flexible ring valve. Stress and strain of the valve were calculated by the method of uniformly loaded circular plates with a central hole. The results obtained are as follows; (1) the strain of flexible ring discharge valve in refrigeration compressor was influenced by tension and compression strain simultaneously. (2) for a given discharge pressure, the tangential and radial strains was increased with increasing discharge pressure. (3) the valve of radial strain was larger than that of tangential strain.

  • The effect of plastic strain on the surface integrity of mild steel (SS 41) was studied. This paper shows that the recrystallization technique is adequate to evaluate the plastic strain in a machined surface experimentally. The relations between the plastic strain and the machining conditions are quantitatively evaluated by using the recrystallization technique. The obtained results are summarized as follows. 1. The surface integrity of steel is considerably influenced by the amount of surface region deformation produced by changes in cutting conditions. 2. The plastic strain in machined surface produced by changes of the cutting conditions is evaluated by the recyrstallization technique. 3. The plastic strain increases with the increase of depth of cut and the decrease of rake angle. 4. When the cutting force is high and the rake angle is small, the value of maximum true strain reaches to high. 5. The maximum true strain is related to the cutting energy, and the values increase with the increase of the unit shear and total engergy in constant depth with the increase of the energy values.

  • In this paper, an asymptotic method is employed to formulate nano- or micro-beams based on strain gradient elasticity. Although a basic theory for the strain gradient elasticity has been well established in literature, a systematic approach is relatively rare because of its complexity and ambiguity of higher-order elasticity coefficients. In order to systematically identify the strain gradient effect, an asymptotic approach is adopted by introducing the small parameter which represents the beam geometric slenderness and/or the internal atomistic characteristic. The approach allows us to systematically split the two-dimensional strain gradient elasticity into the microscopic one-dimensional through-the-thickness analysis and the macroscopic one-dimensional beam analysis. The first-order beam problem turns out to be different from the classical elasticity in terms of the bending stiffness, which comes from the through-the-thickness strain gradient effect. This subsequently affects the second-order transverse shear stress in which the surface shear stress exists. It is demonstrated that a careful derivation of a first strain gradient elasticity embraces "Gurtin-Murdoch traction" as the surface effect of a one-dimensional Euler-Bernoulli-like beam model.
