This study suggested practical considerations in case of planning Small-Sized Household Units of the Vertical Extension of Aged Apartment along with selecting particular Age-Apartment Complex to plan Small-Sized Household Units. Four parts of consideration; (1) Architectural planning aspects, (2) Resident aspects, (3) Structural aspects, and (4) Facility aspects were thoroughly examined to apply in the remodeling construction period. Proposals for Small-Sized Household Units, in this study, covered two different combinations. One was the combination of six equal units, the other was the combination of eleven different types of household units which reflected resident aspects in plan organizations. Plan organization proposal could be chosen and applied to Vertical Extended units by Local Government, Remodeling Association, or Constructor based on their potential residents' aspect, such as family size, life style, age, amount to income and etc. to fulfill their satisfaction. Furthermore, this study had great significance of the adequately reflecting demand on Small-Sized Household Units in Vertical Extension of Aged Apartment.
This study was to identify the spatial and functional characteristics of kitchen and utility space plan in apartment housing. For this purpose, spatial arrangement and function of kitchen and utility space were analyzed according to the size of apartment unit. The results of this study were as follows; 1) The level of spatial separation among living room, dining room, and bedroom is higher in large-sized apartment. And diverse plans were applied for the kitchen of large-sized apartment. 2) To find out functional characteristics of kitchen space, furniture arrangement was analyzed. The I-type kitchen furniture is dominant for small-sized and medium-small apartment, and L-type furniture for medium-large and large sized apartment. 3) For most of the unit plans utility space is located on the balcony outside the kitchen. 4) Sub-kitchen and laundry are major function of utility space, but in case of balcony extention, the function of utility space is minimized. Recent plans for apartment housing shows various spatial arrangement and functions for kitchen and utility space.
The purpose of this study was to present basic data for better space plan of the apartment housing. It attempted to examine the possession and space usage of furniture and housing goods in three type floor plan. It also studied in relation to socidemographic variables and physical variables. The major findings were as follows :1) Housewife age, educational level, family income, number of family members were affected variables to the possession of housing goods and furniture except furniture possession to housewife age.2) It appeared similarity in the furnishing of housing goods and furniture in case of same floor plan.3) Generally, the space of living room was used often in furnishing of furniture and housing goods. 4) Linear arrangement of sofa set and corner arrangement of Anbang furniture are a tendency to get a effective space for activities in living room.5) The size of floor plan space was the most powerful variable to explain the possession and space usage of housing goods and furniture.6) The scarce of space result in pressing the household living space hard. The storage space should be planned and chosen after consideration of human factors according to the tastes, character of the users, and the space factors according to the composition of unit plan and the size of each living space. In case of the small size plan, particularly, it needed to the Built-in furniture as a effective method.

This study aimed to provide a basic data for presenting an appropriate plan of bathroom space which is suitable to our bathing behavior. We analized 1052 of small-sized apartment housing floor plans and the results were as follows. 1. Bathroom space were classified into 5 types : bath unit type, separated type, deficisncy type, over bath unit type, and semiseparated type and there was no separated type in this study. 2. The bathroom space type according to the size of housing 1) Deficiency type was the most popular one in 10-15 pyung sized housing. 2) In the size of 16-20 pyung housing, deficiency and bath unit type were popular ones. 3) Bath unit type was the most generalized one in 21-30 pyung. 4) Bath unit type and over unit type were generally equipped in 31-34 pyung housing. 3. The size of bathroom was ranged from 0.7 pyung to 2.0 pyung, and the ratio of it was 7.5- 12%.
Dwelling connotes characteristics like social and cultural and technical climatic conditions, lifestyles and demands of regions, and especially, apartment, as one of dwelling types, shows various aspects of modern society. With the economic development centering on large cities, apartments have been established as universal housing forms in Seoul and Shanghai. The deepening of economic development in cities has increased small households consisting of one or two persons by affecting the population and household structure, and they've become information consumer groups. This has also influenced the size of apartment and increased the demand for small-sized housing. If the floor area is small, it is possible to use space widely according to the plan composition, so there is a need for floor planning to understand natural environment, physical environment and residents.This study compared and analyzed plan compositions of small-sized apartments which have been parceled out for the recent three years in Seoul and Shanghai. This study aims to understand housing cultures and users in the two countries depending on natural environments, living habits and spatial functions by analyzing common points and differences of public spaces like living room, dining room and kitchen, and private spaces like bedroom which have absolute effects on room arrangement and traffic line. The study results are as follows. From the perspective of natural environments, in Seoul, two-sided open cross-ventilation structure where is favorable to lighting and ventilation, occupied the biggest proportion of public space, while in Shanghai, most public spaces had lighting and ventilation structures through windows in each room. In Seoul, 3R type occupied the largest proportion of private space(87.7%), and privacy was maintained and space scale was adjusted using spaces with diverse functions such as bathroom in the couple bedroom, dress room and powder room and variable walls. But 2R type occupied the largest proportion of private space(60.2%) in Shanghai, and they emphasized private space and privacy of each room depending on major living habits. In conclusion, this study for comparing and analyzing common points and differences of small-sized apartment plan compositions in Seoul and Shanghai will provide proper guidelines for small-sized apartments to be built in Seoul and Shanghai in the future, if strong points and weak points of plan compositions in the two countries will be additionally analyzed and remedied.

Today, apartment is the primary housing type in Korea. In the past, there were many apartment floor plans in the same design way. There have been changes to complex and luxury plans in these days because people want to fit their own needs and wants to the plans. The primary purpose of this study is to analyze interior design trend of medium-large size apartment after year 2000. For that, this study used 7 different construction companies, 13 apartment complexes and 30 unit plan cases which were on sale from April 2007 to April 2008 in Seoul and the Metropolitan area. The results of analysis are as follows: First, most cases had 4LDK and 2bathroom with a dress-room. Second, characteristics of the interior design showed that the variety finish materials used in the units. For wall finish materials, wallpapers were used in mostly regardless in different areas. For floor finish materials, stone and tile were used in similar ratio in the entrance area whereas wood floor mostly was used in living room and kitchen areas. This study shows some significant characteristics of today's apartment even it has some limitations because of small amount of survey cases. More detailed and deeper study will be done continuously.

Korean Apartment Housing, which has been built up for short-time, represents as popular housing reflecting our unique cultural background, and recently the utility room in apartment housing has been changed to accept residents' needs, focusing on their improving life styles. At this point, the purpose of this study Is to analyze the characteristics of the utility room between 1995 and 2005 in order to grasp the current change of the utility space in Korean Apartment Housing. For this, this research investigated 176 samples, collected in 'Apartment Encyclopedia(2004)'. The major results of this study are as follows : 1) As the utility room gets bigger, the size and the ratio to the whole unit area are increased, however the ratio in small area is bigger than the ratio in other area. 2) According to time, the utility room tends to increase the size and the ratio to the whole unit area, and the Increasing tendency appears distinctively after 2002. 3) The utility room used to be located with rear balcony area, however, now it appears to be planned Independently with its unique function. 4) Currently, Second-Kitchen start to plan in the apartment housing.

The purpose of this study is to analyze space composition and size of the Master Zone in the apartment unit plan. For this, we analyzed 435 samples by searching web-sites of the 5 main construction companies. The major results of this study are as follows. 1) Master Zone is organized 4 spaces such as main room, bathroom and make-up & dress room. Six types of Master Zone are classified with the composition of 4 spaces. 2) The size of the Master Zone is increased in proportion to the square meter. But the range of the ratio is small range of fluctuation as 20%${\sim}$30%. 3)The size and ratio of the each spaces of the Master Zone are analyzed. The size of bedroom is increased but the ratio is decreased. The size of bathroom is increased but the ratio is regular as 4%${\sim}$5%. The size of make-up and dressing room is generally increased but the range of the size and ratio is the most extensive. Through this analysis and research, this study would be provied the basic data for actual housing planning and to contribute to future trends of apartment houses.
Open Housing System ideas were developed in Korea in the 1980s to satisfy the demand for variety indwelling spaces. This domestic attempt to apply open building principles was highly restricted and was applied only in support of middle-large size apartments rather than small size apartments. One of the problems was the conventional design of building structures. It was difficult to effectively satisfy the various lifestyles and transformation of dwellings because existing apartments were designed using a concrete wall structure approach, in which room sizes and arrangements were fixed by the placement of structural concrete walls. This was the result not only of structural analysis (other structural designs were possible) but also the result of the idea that the standard plan was suitable for a stable society and was easier to implement, and that change in social standards and technical upgrading was not going to happen. This study presents an apartment concept in which open building design methods were applied to satisfy the problem of various lifestyles and household sizes and preferences for small apartments. This concept also helps to create a more effective and long lasting building which decreases construction waste, saves resources and protects the environment by enabling the building to accommodate combining, increasing / decreasing, changing location or changing usage of rooms.
The purpose of this study was to examine needs of residents on the storage according to unit size in apartment. In order to achieve our goal, the questionnaire survey was used. We sampled the questionnaire surveys of 250 households in Seoul whose apartment sizes had been more than 20 pyung. The data collected by the questionnaire survey was analyzed by examining the frequency, percentage on the SPSS/PC+. The results of the study were obtained as follows: 1) In research on the actual storage condition, Residents tended to feel constraint on the storage of the season goods and the storage satisfaction on the service area was found lowest. Therefore, there needed to design the balcony more efficiently for the storage and the interior storage for the season goods. 2) In research on consciousness and attitude about the storage, residents tended to keep the goods of no use and prefered to arrange neatly rather than use conveniently. Therefore, there needed more efficient space in the balcony for the storage of the goods of no use and the closed furniture rather than the open furniture was suited for arrangement. 3) In research on the storage needs, needs for the built-in furniture in all apartment sizes showed highly and residents wanted a space for the exclusive use of the storage. In a solution, it was proposed to equip with the interior storage and the exterior cooperative storage. In the conclusion, needs of residents on the storage according to apartment size were different little. The small size apartment had the serious storage problems and wanted the efficient space plan for storage.
