  • This study was conducted to investigate the possible installation of small hydro-power plant at the discharge point of Gumi sewage treatment plant (STP) using treated wastewater. Sufficient amount of water to transfer to electric power and the selection of proper location are two essential elements for the construction of small hydro-power facility. Preliminary analysis based on site visit and existing data in Gumi STP were made. Capacity of the small hydro-power plants and exact location were determined by geomorphological condition and flow duration characteristics. Flow duration characteristics and its duration curve were identified using monthly rainfall data in Gumi STP. Relevant facts of small hydro-power system in other STP were referred to adopt to Gumi STP situation. Flowrate of treated effluents and effective head between flow chamber and the location of hydraulic turbine in Gumi STP are found to be $3.70m^3$/sec and 3.5m respectively. Electric generation rate based on this feasibility study was estimated to be 86.3kW/h. Yearly electric generation rate was expected to be 932.4MMh. Proposed small hydro-power plant construction in Gumi STP is to be reasonable.

  • In order to advance and improve the performance of domestic aged power plants, IEDs have been developed for power generation systems. For smooth installation and operation of the protection relays, a detail settings study of IED is required. This paper deals with an analysis based on PSCAD and setting investigation of IED for loss of field, reverse power protection in Small Hydro Generation System.

  • Hydro-electric power generation from multi-purpose dams has been playing important roles in the electric power supply network in Korea. Although the total share of hydro power in national electricity supply now becomes very small, the peak-shaving and frequency control capability of hydro power helps the power company enormously in maintaining the quality of power. But since the company that builds and operates the multi-purpose dams in Korea has to sell all the electricity produced to the monopolistic utility, there have been various problems in justifying the investment, designing pricing mechanism, and controlling operations of the power plants. In addition, economic evaluation of the hydro power has been distorted by a variety of reasons and hence it has been very difficult to encourage effective development and utilization of national water resources. To make the problem worse, both parties are public companies with X-inefficiency problems. Thus, changing environment requires to reengineer the system that governs hydro power generation. We address the problems of Korean hydro-electric power generation system in four areas: the investment justification process, the operations decison right of the hydro power plants, the pricing of the purchased-power, and the negotiation of contract revision. Then we propose improvement directions of new hydro-electric power system in view of static and dynamic efficiency, X-inefficiency and equity.

  • Small Hydro-Power (SHP) is an environmental friendly technology. Usually hydro power generation projects are viewed as constructing large dams and reservoirs but available new research and engineering techniques have helped hydro power generation without large dams and without large reservoirs. In India, there are several water installations, irrigation dams, canals, streams or running rivers not tapped to generate power. In these cases the existing system and facilities can help in generating power with less investment and time. This area is yet unexplored. Harnessing a stream for hydroelectric power is a major undertaking for the energy crises and the global issues to go green. In this technical note a potential site for mini hydro power plant nearby Shoolini University is identified and examined for the economic feasibility.

  • The water discharged from sewage treatment plants has been considered to be useless, due to itslack of economic utility for small hydro power generation. Considering that most sewage treatment facilities have a water head of less than 2 meters and their flow rate is constant, it is necessary to develop a small hydro power generation device capable of maintaining stable power generation and efficiency. This paper presents the development of anintegrated small hydro power generation system and presents its performance evaluation and results. Then, the economics and use of the system for practical applications are suggested. As a result, it is foundthat the generator efficiency is 92%, the electric energy produced is 10kWh and the economic efficiency, as described by the B/C ratio,is 1.0 or more. Particularly, if the operating level of the generation device is maintained at 80% or more of the rated power, it is possible to secure its economic efficiency and, after 23 years, the investment cost will bereturned. The integrated hydro power generation device is expected to have a positive effect not only in terms of the water discharged from the sewage treatment plant, but also in terms of facilities capable of securing similar flow characteristics.

  • The purpose of this study is to explain the importance of Vibration Monitoring Device by introducing an example of Predictive Maintenance System using Condition Monitoring System of Hydro-turbine generator. Confirming vibration of generation equipment is commissioning procedure during equipment completion for checking guaranteed items. Data from Generator output range are used to determine output band to continue the performance of equipment. The Vibration Monitoring System is not absolute method of maintenance, but if it is used well with expert, it will be visible, data-analyzed, scientific maintenance more than others. And also, Condition Monitoring System is very important for remote controlled small hydro-power plant although most of it is installed in Large hydro-power plant.
