The object of this paper is the controller for supplying stably power in a separate house in which a hybrid electrical storage system with a stand-alone photovoltaic/wind power generation system and a small generator is applied. In the photovoltaic/wind hybrid power system used in the separate house, when only the battery is used in sunless days, the capacity of the battery is become larger. In particular, as in recent days, if cloudy days are frequent due to anomaly climate, it is difficult to estimate the number of sunless days. Accordingly, it is preferable to build the electrical storage system that numbers of sunshineless days are to be controlled and a shortage amount of the power generation capacity is to be handled by a small generator system. In order to supply stably power of new renewable energy such as solar to any separate houses, it is preferable to reduce the capacity of battery by decreasing the number of sunless days when estimating the capacity of battery and to drive the small generator for compensation of the power shortage. Such system needs components including inverters for photovoltaic and wind power generation system, batteries and controllers for automatically driving the small generator, based upon the nature of the stand-alone house, and it is preferable to use the controller having a simpler and higher stability by adopting the all-in-one scheme to facilitate its maintenance.
In a wind farm, a large number of small wind turbine generators (WTGs) operate whilst a small number of a large generator do in a conventional power plant. To maintain high quality and reliability of electrical energy, a wind farm should have equal performance to a thermal power plant in the transient state as well as in the steady state. The wind farm shows similar performance to the conventional power plant in the steady state due to the advanced control technologies. However, it shows quite different characteristics during fault conditions in a grid, which gives significant effects on the operation of a wind farm and the power system stability. This paper presents an analysis of response of a wind farm during grid fault conditions. During fault conditions, each WTG might produce different frequency components in the voltage. The different frequency components result in the non-fundamental frequencies in the voltage and the current of a wind farm, which is called by "beats". This phenomenon requires considerable changes of control technologies of a WTG to improve the characteristics in the transient state such as a fault ride-through requirement of a wind farm. Moreover, it may cause difficulties in protection relays of a wind farm. This paper analyzes the response of a wind farm for various fault conditions using a PSCAD/EMTDC simulator.
This paper describes evaluation results of the wind power penetration limit (WPPL) and the wind energy penetration (WEP) in the Mongolian central power system (MCPS). A wind power plant (WPP) in a power system possesses an output power limit because the power system must maintain a balance between the generation and consumption of electricity at all times in order to achieve an adequate level of quality. The instantaneous penetration limit (IPL) of wind generation at a load is determined as the minimum of the three technical constraints: the minimum output, the ramp rate capability, and the spinning reserve of the conventional generating units. In this paper, a WPPL is defined as the maximum IPL divided by the peak load. A maximal variation rate (VR) of wind power is a major factor in determining the IPL, WPPL, and WEP. This paper analyzes the effects of the maximal VR of wind power on the WPPL, WEP, and capacity factor (CF) in the MCPS. The results indicate that a small VR can facilitate a large amount of wind energy while maintaining a high CF with increased wind power penetration.
To install a wind power generator, the survey on the wind environment resources must be conducted in advance. The survey on the wind environment resources is to collect and analyze data regarding the wind speed and direction on a data logger. The data logger consists of a sensor, signal processing circuit and storage device. According to the analysis of the stored data, the amount of power generation by the types of generators can be predicted and the most optimal generator including safety grade can be selected, and in case of installing a generator in the future, it can be utilized as basic data regarding supporting base and foundation construction method of survey points. Data logger was developed for a small wind power generator that is suitable for the international standard(IEC 61400) by using DSP-F28335 micro controller in this paper. It was developed to measure the wind speed of 1 [m/s]~17 [m/s], the wind direction of 0 [$^{\circ}$]~359 [$^{\circ}$], and temperature of -30 [$^{\circ}C$]~50 [$^{\circ}C$], and the comparative experiment with other companies' data loggers was conducted, and an error was measured to be less than ${\pm}0.1$ [m/s] for wind speed and less than +1 [$^{\circ}$] for wind direction.
Due to environmental issues such as global warming, the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions has become an inevitable measure to be taken. Among others, the building sector accounts for 50% of total carbon dioxide emissions, which is significantly high. Therefore, in order to reduce carbon dioxide emissions of the buildings, improving the energy efficiency by utilizing wind power among renewable energy sources is recommended. In case of buildings in the planning stage, it is possible to take the load of wind power generation systems into consideration when determining installed capacity. Already completed buildings, however, should be connected to small wind electric systems according to the live loads of the buildings based on the architectural design criteria. In order to connect to a building that has already been completed, it is necessary to consider the load of the small wind electric system as well as the live load of building. In addition, we need to generate the maximum electricity possible by determining the maximum installed capacity in a small area. In this paper, we propose the method for determining maximum capacity for building integrated small wind electric systems, which takes into account the considerations associated with connecting small wind electric systems to completed buildings. This can be developed into a system linked to solar power, which makes it possible to improve the energy independence of the building. In addition, carbon dioxide reduction by improving energy efficiency is expected.
A dispered power system means a little bit of small power generation equipment located near the power-damend areas. Due to no power supply line, such a power source is very favorable for the decrease in loss of electric power supply, in comparison to the giantly focused power source, Because of small power source, this power source also corresponds promptly to the variation of power demend. On the basis of energy saving, environmental reservation, and utilization of natural or unused energy, solar power plants can be introduced into the residence section of cities and small water or wind-power plants near the urban areas. In case of Korea, some wind farm have been introduced into Cheju island, Condensed introduction of several small power sources into an used distribution line may, however, result in a big problem, it is, therefore, necessary that protective-cooporative plans between power quality and distribution line should be introduced for efficient utilization of KEPCO distribution system.
Compared with a traditional power system of electricity providers, distributed power systems consist of power suppliers which are small and demand-oriented. Each small power supplier tends to utilizes renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power. It is because that home renewable energy systems do not need a large scale infrastructure which is required for traditional power plants. In this work we study an economic feasibility of such a renewable energy source. We describe how renewable power generation works and what it brings in terms of economic benefits. Also, we analyze limitations by the current policy and their possible solutions.
Recently wind energy penetration into power systems has increased. Wind power, as a renewable energy source, plays a different role in the power system compared to conventional power generation units. As long as only single and small wind power units are installed in the power system, wind power does not influence power system operation and can easily be integrated. However, when wind power penetration reaches a significantly high level and conventional power production units are substituted, the impact of wind power on the power system becomes noticeable and must be handled. The connection of large wind turbines and wind farms to the grid has a large impact on grid stability. The electrical power system becomes more vulnerable to and dependent on wind energy production, and therefore there is an increased concern about the large wind turbines impact on grid stability. In this work, a new type of fuzzy logic controller for the frequency control of wind farms is proposed and its performance is verified using SimWindFarm toolbox which was developed as part of the Aeolus FP7 project.
In this study, procedures, a power performance testing system of Wind Turbine System Research Center of Kangwon National University is introduced. Test prodedures and results are presented on a stand-alone vertical-axis 200W wind turbine manufactured by Geum-Poong Energy Inc.. Power performance test is performed according to IEC standard. The test results are compared with the power performance standard. Also, the effects of normalization and disturbed sectors are considered.
