  • This paper has focusing CheongHaeJin's maritime trading activities between Korea, China and Japan in the 9th century. In operation of CheongHaeJin which Chang BoGo was given a key role, CheongHaeJin creates three nation's wealth in triangular trade among Korea, China and Japan. And also, CheongHaeJin's contribution is considerable to the maritime trade development of Northeast Asia through establishing trading advance base in China and Japan, and organizing Shilla's people in China. Chang BoGo justified the control over small business groups of the west and south sea of Korea and the east and south sea of China by keeping pirates away His trade groups controlled foreign trade of three countries: Shilla, the Dang Dynasty of China and Japan. They connected Persia, India, Southeast Asia, and China. CheongHaeJin's key success factors of the maritime activities are summarized as follows; There is a possibility of searching that successful factor from the people of operator of CheongHaeJin. Based on oceanic adventurous spirit with character and progressive thinking could complete the rally of sea influence and composition of fleets. Secondly, the success factor is the excellent operational ability and leadership which learned in the Dang Dynasty of China. Thirdly, In 9th century, International political context was suitable for CheongHaeJin's construction and operation. Such political circumstances had given to CheongHaeJin remunerative position. Finally, Although central government could not maintain the sea traffic securities, Chang BoGo's ocean trading fleets guaranteed the safe fishing industry of people and security of sea traffic.

  • The investigation for the catch and species composition in the deep sea of the East Sea was done to search marine organisms using some kinds of traps with small commercial fishing vessel near Goseong, Korea from 2008 to 2009. The experiments was carried out with some different traps at the depth of 200m, 400m, 700m and 1,000m. In 2008, the amount of catch with rectangular, cone and drum net traps was 91.4kg with twelve trips and the proportion of catch with rectangular and cone traps was high. Dominant species caught were Aniwan whelk (57%), snow crab (12%), hunchback sculpin (7%) and red snow crab (5%). The catch of Aniwan whelk was done well with rectangular and cone traps at the depth of 700-1,000m. Snow crab was mainly caught with rectangular and cone traps at the shallower depth of 200m, while red snow crab caught a lot with cone trap at the deeper depth of 700m. In 2009, the amount of catch with rectangular, cone and round traps was 92.4kg with nine trips. The proportion of catch with round trap was higher than that with cone trap. Dominant species caught were snow crab (67.1%), Aniwan whelk (14.8%) and northern shrimp (9.8%). Snow crab was caught well with round trap at the depth less than 400m.

  • Copper (Cu) is a necessary microelement for plants. However, high concentrations of Cu are toxic to plants that change the regulation of several stress-induced proteins. In this study, an annealing control primer (ACP) based approach was used to identify differentially expressed Cu-induced genes in alfalfa leaves. Two-week-old alfalfa plants (Medicago sativa L.) were exposed to Cu for 6 h. Total RNAs were isolated from treated and control leaves followed by ACP-based PCR technique. Using GeneFishing ACPs, we obtained several genes those expression levels were induced by Cu. Finally, we identified several genes including UDP-glucuronic acid decarboxylase, transmembrane protein, small heat shock protein, C-type cytochrome biogenesis protein, mitochondrial 2-oxoglutarate, and trans-2,3-enoyl-CoA reductase in alfalfa leaves. These identified genes have putative functions in cellular processes such as cell wall structural rearrangements, transduction, stress tolerance, heme transport, carbon and nitrogen assimilation, and lipid biosynthesis. Response of Cu-induced genes and their identification in alfalfa would be useful for molecular breeding to improve alfalfa with tolerance to heavy metals.

  • The author carried out an experiment to find out the response of gray rock cod, Sebastes inermis (Cuvier et Valenciennes) to the color light. The experimental tank ($360L{\times}50W{\times}55H\;cm$) was set up in a dark room. Six longitudinal sections with 60 cm intervals are marked in the tank to observe the location of the fish. Water depth in the tank was kept 50 cm level. Light bulbs of 20W at the both ends of the tank projected the light horizontally into the tank. Two different colored filters were selected from four colors of red, blue, yellow, and white, and they were placed in front of the light bulbs to make different colors of light. Light intensity were controlled by use of auxiliary filters intercepted between the bulb and the filter. The fishes were acclimatized in the dark for 50 minutes before they were employed in the experiment. Upon turning on the light, the number of fish in each section was counted 40 times in 30 second intervals, and the mean of the number of fish in each section was given as the gathering rate of the fish. The colors favourited by the fish was found in the order of white, blue, yellow and red. The gathering rate of fish on illumination period was small and comparatively fluctuated with stability. The difference of the gathering rates on two different colors of light was much greater, regardless of illumination period, in day time than in night time.

  • This paper reports the strandings of sea turtles on Korean shores monitored for the first time in 2008. A total of 19 sea turtles, consisting of 12 greens and 7 loggerheads, were recorded as stranded from the east coast to the south including Jeju Island. Reported strandings reached a peak in July and dominant area was Jeju Island. The curved carapace length of loggerhead sea turtles ranged 65-84.2cm and that of green sea turtles ranged 39.2-90cm, indicating most of them were immature to sub-adult. Out of 19 turtles, 11 were found dead with unknown reasons. Possible causes of death may include drawning by fishing gear, swallowing of marine debris, boat collision, and diseases. An immature green sea turtle tagged with a satellite transmitter spent winter near Jeju Island where it was released, suggesting that the Island provide immature greens a feeding ground. Considering thousands of sea turtles crawl on Japanese shores for nesting every year, the number of sea turtles reported in Korean waters was relatively small. Therefore, it is suggested that an appropriate monitoring system be necessary to protect and conserve endangered sea turtle species in Korean waters.

  • This paper aims to examine the local changes in which the introduction of new fishery technology in small remote island, Geomun-Do, had resulted. The main findings are as follows. With the help of introduction of new fishery technology, local fishery industry transformed self-sufficient one into commercial one. This led to increase in the productivity of fishery industry and, subsequently, the emergence of new social system and processing facilities. The growth of fisheries, which led the opening of fishing market and the development of processing industry, made it change local industrial structure. This paper focused particularly on local cultural transformation revealed in the process of the introduction of new fishery technology. In conclusion, the paper argues that the pace of cultural transformation can be selectively appeared by the qualitative characteristics of locality and social group, when new cultural elements are introduced and adapted to a certain locality.

  • This paper presents case studies on the multi-species fisheries in Korean waters. Multi-species fisheries were divided into two types, that is, multi-species by a single fishery and single species by multiple fisheries. For the case of the multi-species by a single fishery, a multi-species yield-per-recruit model was applied to the Korean pair trawl fishery, which exploits demersal fishes such as, hairtail (Trichiurus lepturus), small yellow croaker (Pseudosciaena polyactis), white croaker (Argyrosomus argentatus) and pomfret (Pampus echinogaster). The overall fishing mortality ($F_x$) values for the multi-species was estimated and compared to the spawning potential ratio ($F_{x\%}$) val ues estimated from the spawning biomass-per-recruit model.

  • Dyslexia is an obstacle for reading that should be found and treated in the early stage. Although dyslexia is not a common symptom appeared many people, they are alienated group which the government should pay attention and support. Yet the government of the Republic of Korea has low awareness and interests on dyslexia. This study aims to survey on measuring the awareness of parents, elementary school teachers, kindergarten teachers, and school librarians, who should sensitively distinguish dyslexia among children in its full-swing time, and to find their perception gaps. In order to gain result, this study conducted questionnaire survey targeting parents, elementary school teachers, kindergarten teachers, and school librarians resided in metropolis, small and medium sized cities, and farming and fishing village, with the total number of 623 people, and analyzed their answers using SPSS 20.0 program. The research shows that awareness on dyslexia depends on their jobs, residence, gender, knowledge on dyslexia, and experience in encountering a person in dyslexia.

  • The maneuverabilities of the M.S. Pusan 404 are studied, based on maneuvering indices and the data obtained from her Z test. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. The maneuvering indices K' and T' of the M.S Pusan 404 are 0.9359, 0.1955 at 10° Z test and 0.9781, 0.5802 at 20° Z test and 0.9108, 0.7090 at 30° Z test respectively. The above calculated values K', T' showed that her maneuverabilities are more effective when the rudder is used to small angle than to large angle. 2. As her maneuvering indices K' and T' at 10° Z test are smaller than the standard maneuvering indices of fishing boats, her turning ability was found to be lower but her obeying ability higher. 3. the running distance of a turn at her 10° Z test was about 8.7 times her own len호 and she was considered to have good maneuverabilities synthetically.
