A study on the ultrastructural changes In the epithellum of the vas deferens by season was conducted for the spdng and summer specimens of a slug Incilarfa fruhstoiferl. The vas deferens of the spdng spedmen was muscular tube about 0.4mm in diameter. Its lumen was divided into three flat grooves and the each groove was subdivided into two subbranches. The luminal epithellal celis of the Vas deferens which were irregular In shape showed strong methylenophilla in a double stain of methylene blue and basic fuchsln. The lumen of the vas deferens was filled with components strongly stained by methylene blue. The circular muscle layers surrounding the luminal epithellum of the vas deferens contained numerous granules arranged at regular intervals. The vas deferens of the summer specimen also was a thick muscular tube showing 0.4 mm in diameter. Its lumen was divided into four grooves but, the each of the grooves was not subdivided to form certain branclees unlikely to the spdng spedmen. The lining epfthelium of the lumen was consisted of simple ciliated columnar cells, irregular columnar cells and conical cells. The histological features were quiet different from those of the spring spedmen which showed irregular cell arrangement. According to electron microscopy the epithelium of the vas deferens in the spring specimen was composed of irregular columnar cells which had irregular shaped nuclei. The nuclei of the epitheilal cells were relatively large in comparison to their cytoplasm. The overall electric density of the cytoplasm was relatively high. The lumen of the vas deferens in the summer specimen was lined by a epfthelium with tail ciliated columnar cells and irregular cells. The unclei of the epithellal cells were long ellipsoid or irregular in shape. Both of the cytoplasm and the nuclei were showed low electric density. in consideration with the observable cell organelles were only ndoplasmic reticulum, lysosomes and microtutules, the cell organelles were poorly developed. The apical surfaces of the epithelial cells possessed brush borders with numerous microvilli and cilia with 9+2 arrangement of microtubules. The circular muscle layers surrounding the epithelium are usually thick and the degree of development of the circular muscle layers seems to be even in the both of the spring and summer specimens.
Prostate cancer (PCa) is one of the most metastatic tumor. Although hormone therapy or surgical castration is mostly conducted to treat PCa, it has a lot of side effects. Recently, many researchers have been exploring the tumor microenvironment to remedy these circumstances. Immune cells, especially macrophages, are an important composition of the tumor microenvironment. Under normal conditions, macrophages exhibit mild tumoricidal activity against tumors. However, once activated by interferon gamma or lipopolysaccharides, macrophages can kill cancer cells directly or indirectly by secreting cytokines and chemokines. In this study, murine macrophage RAW 264.7 cells were treated with Phellinus linteus extract. To analyze their pro-inflammatory phenotype, we were used several assays such as a real-time polymerase chain reaction, an enzyme-linked immunosorbent and nitric oxide assay. Prostate cancer cells were treated with the RAW 264.7-conditioned media, which was identified as a pro-inflammatory nature, for 48 h, and the expression of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT)-related genes was determined. Not only N-cadherin, Snail, Twist, Slug, and Cadherin 11, which are mechenchymal-related proteins, were decrease, but epithelial marker of E-cadherin was increased. In addition, the mRNA level of vimentin, ccl2, and vegfa were decreased, as the EMT is closely related to the migration and invasion of cancer cells. In conclusion, the RAW 264.7-conditioned media stimulated with P. linteus extract inhibited migration and invasion and regulated the EMT pathway in human prostate cancer cells.

Serpins are a group of proteins involved in the regulation of serine and other type of proteases, and have been identified in many kinds of organisms from invertebrates to vertebrates. Serpins are known to regulate the proteolytic cascades of the innate immune pathways in addition to their roles in blood coagulation, angiogenesis, fibrinolysis, inflammation and tumor suppression. In this study, we have isolated two partial serpin gene fragments from expressed sequence tags (ESTs) of Nesiohelix samarangae. Dotplot analysis indicates that they are of two different types, Ns-serpin type 1 and Ns-serpin type 2. Ns-serpin type 1 has 819 bp coding region (272 amino acids), whereas Ns-serpin type 2 has 555 bp coding region (185 amino acids). Molecular phylogenetic analysis shows that the identified serpins have high similarities to their counterparts in the California see slug, Aplysia californica. Yet, the precise biological and immunological roles of these Ns-serpins remain to be further investigated using RNA interference and other molecular techniques.

Recently, liver damage contributes to big percentage of the morbidity and mortality rates worldwide. Excessive intake of alcohol is one of the major causes of liver injury. When liver injury is repeated and becomes chronic, it leads to development of fibrosis and cirrhosis. In the liver, TGF-${\beta}$ is a profibrogenic cytokine, which participates in various critical events cause liver fibrosis. Seahorse (Hippocampus abdominalis) is a common traditional Chinese medicine and has been widely used for centuries. Seahorse has been known to have a variety of bioactivities, such as anti-oxidant, anti-fatigue, and anti-tumor. Peptide is one of the main compounds of seahorse. In this study, we isolated enzymatic hydrolysate from seahorse H. abdominalis by alcalase hydrolysis and investigated the effect of the hydrolysate on liver injury. In the present in vitro studies, the hydrolysate increases cell viability of Chang cells and protects Huh7 cells from ethanol toxicity. In addition, the hydrolysate inhibits TGF-${\beta}$-induced responses. In vivo studies show that the pretreatment of hydrolysate reduces alcohol-induced increases of serum Glutamic oxaloacetic acid transaminase and Glutamic pyruvate transaminase activities and increases liver weight and body weight. These results suggest that seahorse may have a hepatoprotective effect.
Gas and liquid flow characteristics were investigated in an internal circulation airlift reactor using a single nozzle for a gas distributor. In three reactors with different diameters of the downcomer and heights of the riser, the gas holdup in the individual flow zone and the impulseresponse curve of tracer for an air-water system were measured for various gas velocities and reactor heights. Experimental results showed that the flow behavior of bubbles in the riser was the slug flow due to strong coalescences of bubbles and that the bubble flow pattern in the downcomer was the transition bubble flow for the smaller diameter of the downcomer, however, it was the homogeneous bubble flow for the larger one. And mean gas holdups in the individual flow zone and the reactor were greatly increased with decreasing the diameter of the downcomer for the equal ratio of height of the top section to that of the riser. Also, the mixing time was much effected by the height of the top section of reactor and for the equal ratio of height of top section to that of the riser, it was increased with increasing the diameter of the downcomer and the height of the riser. Flow characteristics of liquid were mainly varied with the bubble flow pattern in the downcomer and the size of the top section of reactor. And circulation velocities of liquid in the riser were increased with increasing gas velocities and the size of the top section of reactor, and for the equal ratio of height of top section to that of the riser, they were increased with increasing the diameter of the downcomer and the height of the riser.

Contamination of groundwater resources by organic chemicals has become an issue of increasing environmental concern. Surfactant-enhanced aquifer remediation (SEAR) is widely recognized as one of the most promising techniques to remediate organic contaminations in-situ. Solutions of surfactant or surfactant with polymer are used to dramatically expedite the process, which in turn, may reduce the treatment time of a site compared to use of water alone. In the design of surfactant-based technologies for remediation of organic contaminated aquifers, it is very important to have a considerable analysis using extensive numerical simulations prior to full-scale implementation. This study investigated the formation and flow of microemulsions during SEAR of organic-contaminated aquifer using the finite difference model UTCHEM, a three-dimensional, multicomponent, multiphase, compositional model. The remediation process variables considered in this study were the sequence of injection fluids, the injection and extraction rate, the concentrations of polymer in surfactant slug and chase water, and the duration of surfactant injection. For each variable, temporal changes in injection and production wells and spatial distributions of relative saturations in the organic phase were compared. Cleanup time and cumulative organic recovery were also quantified. The study would provide useful information to design strategies for the remediation of nonaqueous phase liquid-contaminated aquifers.

Hydraulic gradient of the landfill soils is estimated by Devlin (2003) method, and its variation characteristics from rainfall and permeability of the aquifer material are analyzed. The study site of 18 m $\times$ 12 m is located in front of the Environment Research Center at the Pukyong National University, and core logging, slug/bail test and groundwater monitoring was performed. The sluglbail tests were performed in 9 wells (except BH9 well), and drawdown data with elapsed time for bail tests were analyzed using Bouwer-Rice and Hvorslev methods. The average hydraulic conductivity estimated in each of the test wells was ranged $1.991{\times}10^{-7}{\sim}4.714{\times}10^{-6}m/sec$, and the average hydraulic conductivity in the study site was estimated $2.376{\times}10^{-6}m/sec$ for arithmetic average, $1.655{\times}10^{-6}m/sec$ for geometric average and $9.366{\times}10^{-7}m/sec$ for harmonic average. The permeability of landfill soils was higher at the east side of the study site than at the west side. Groundwater level in 10 wells was monitored 44 times from October 2 to November 7, 2007. The groundwater level was ranged 1.187$\sim$1.610 m, and the average groundwater level range in each of the well showed 1.256$\sim$1.407 m. The groundwater level was higher at the east side than at the west side of the study site, and this distribution is identify to it of hydraulic conductivity. The hydraulie gradient and the major flow direction for 10 wells were estimated 0.0072$\sim$0.0093 and $81.7618{\sim}88.0836^{\circ}$, respectively. Also, the hydraulic gradient and the major flow direction for 9 wells were estimated 0.0102$\sim$0.0124 and $84.6822{\sim}89.1174^{\circ}$, respectively. The hydraulic gradient of the study site increased from rainfall (83.5 mm) on October 7, causing by that the groundwater level of the site with high permeability was higher. The hydraulic gradient estimated on and after October 16 was stable, due to almost no rainfall. Thus, it was confirmed that the variation of the hydraulic gradient in the landfill soils was controlled by the rainfall.
Electrical resistivity tomography surveys using boreholes were applied to reveal the cause of a catastrophic land subsidence accompanied by the excessive groundwater withdrawal in urban karst area and to map the connectivity of disseminated cavities over the study area. In order to understand the hydrogeological characteristics, resistivity using exsitu core samples, groundwater level for five boreholes, and hydraulic conductivity using slug test were measured. The hydraulic conductivity variation ranging from 0.8 to $9.3{\times}10^{-4}\;cm/s$ for five boreholes and a gentle slope of groundwater level indicated that there is no significant characteristics of hydraulic heterogeneity. Core samples of the lime-silicated rock were classified as three groups including cracked, weathered, and fresh and measured the resistivity values ranged from 103 to 161, 218 to 277, and 597 to 662 ohm-m, respectively. Drilling results that showed the cavity filled with clay materials and tomogram for this region indicated resistivity value lower than 50 ohm-m. From the inverted resistivity results for each section with five boreholes, cavity and fractured layer were distributed along the depth between 10 and 20 m overall area and cavities ranging from 4 to 6 m filled with clay materials.
Despite recent groundbreaking advances in multiple myeloma (MM) treatment, most MM patients ultimately experience relapse, and the relapse biology is not entirely understood. To define altered gene expression in MM relapse, gene expression profiles were examined and compared among 16 MM patients grouped by 12 months progression-free survival (PFS) after autologous stem cell transplantation. To maximize the difference between prognostic groups, patients at each end of the PFS spectrum (the four with the shortest PFS and four with the longest PFS) were chosen for additional analyses. We discovered that integrin-${\alpha}8$ (ITGA8) is highly expressed in MM patients with early relapse. The integrin family is well known to be involved in MM progression; however, the role of integrin-${\alpha}8$ is largely unknown. We functionally overexpressed integrin-${\alpha}8$ in MM cell lines, and surprisingly, stemness features including $HIF1{\alpha}$, VEGF, OCT4, and Nanog, as well as epithelial mesenchymal transition (EMT)-related phenotypes, including N-cadherin, Slug, Snail and CXCR4, were induced. These, consequently, enhanced migration and invasion abilities, which are crucial to MM pathogenesis. Moreover, the gain of integrin-${\alpha}8$ expression mediated drug resistance against melphalan and bortezomib, which are the main therapeutic agents in MM. The cBioPortal genomic database revealed that ITGA8 have significant tendency to co-occur with PDGFRA and PDGFRB and their mRNA expression were up-regulated in ITGA8 overexpressed MM cells. In summary, integrin-${\alpha}8$, which was up-regulated in MM of early relapse, mediates EMT-like phenotype, enhancing migration and invasion; therefore, it could serve as a potential marker of MM relapse and be a new therapeutic target.
Hydrogeological systems in a metrnpolitan area can be understood by analyzing the groundwater disturbing factors such as constructions and land applications, the groundwater usage for domestic and industrial purposes, and the groundwater pumpage to lower the groundwater level for the structural safety of subway and underground facilities. This study is part of the study performed to understand the groundwater system in the Seoul area and it is focusing on the hydraulic properties. Groundwater well inventory, barometric efficiency measurements, pumping and slug tests, and long-term groundwater monitoring have been perfonrmed during the last 2 years. The relations between Han River and the groundwater around the river also have been observed. These observations and test data, together with the information on soil distribution, geology, and logging data are used to construct a database and GIS(Geographic Information System) presentation system using ARC/INFO. Barometric efficiencies appeared to have no special trends associated with well depths, which maeans that the degree of confinement of the crystaline rock aquifer of the Seoul area is distributed locally depending on the developrnent of fractures. Hydraulic conductivities exponentialiy decrease with well depth. The stage of Han River fluctuates according to the tidal movement of nearby seawater but the tidal effects attenuate due to the underwater dams. Groundwater levels in the Seoul area seem to have declined for the last two years,but it is not certain that the declination represents the long-term trend.
