  • In this paper, in order to solve high water content of water sludge and promote its recycle, sludge mixtures with various mixing ratios were produced. Sludge mixture consisted of water sludge and weathered granite soil. Their physical properties and unsaturated characteristics (soil-water characteristic curve, and unsaturated permeability function) were investigated by laboratory tests. Experimental test results indicated that at a given matric suction volumetric water content of sludge mixture increased as water sludge content increased. Air entry values of sludge mixture increased from 0.9 kPa to 2.4 kPa with an increase in water sludge content or fine content. In addition, unsaturated permeability function, which is an important factor for performing infiltration analysis, was predicted using saturated permeability and soil-water characteristic curve of sludge mixture.

  • This study is about the application of waste stone sludge as fill material. Waste stone sludge, weathered granite soil, and the mixture of the former and the latter strengthened with staple fiber are experimentally analyzed for measuring strength property. When staple fiber was mixed with waste stone sludge, weathered granite soil, and the mixture, there was a nearly linear relationship between the amount of the staple fiber and the increasing ratio of unconfined compressive strength. The increasing ratio of unconfined compressive strength was the largest in weathered granite soil. The increasing ratio of unconfined compressive strength of the mixture was similar to that of waste stone sludge. In the case of the mixture of weathered granite soil and waste stone sludge, an internal friction angle tended to increases rely on increasement of staple fiber content, whereas the change of cohesion was small. An internal friction angle was increased by 21 percent when staple fiber content is 0.75 percent. Comparing with weathered granite soil or waste stone sludge, strength parameters of the mixture were increased relatively. Thus strengthening effect of staple fiber in the mixture is expected.

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the reaction of hydration of paper sludge during the setting of portland cement in a paper sludge, wood-cement-water mixturte. The percentage of paper sludge per cement is 7.5%, 15%, 30% respectively. The result indicated that the sludge of 7.5% had the most effect on reaction of hydration, and the sludge of 15% had moderately inhibitory effect but there is still possibility to make sludge-cement board. Paper sludge of 30%, Pinus koraiensis Sieb. et Zucc and Populus euramericana Guinier were proved to have the worst inhibitory effect on cement hydration, so pretreatment will be needed before making board with paper sludge-cement mixture.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of bulking agents including cow manure, saw dust and rice straw in the ripening of leather sludge for vermistabilization. The changes of the waste properties for ripening time for 50 days were observed according to the various mixture ratios of leather sludge and bulking agents. The pH values of the mixture wastes were decreased from 7.5-8.0 to 6.4-7.3 with the ripening time for 50 days, and it was indifferent of the mixture ratio and type of the bulking agent. The initial value of oxidation-reduction potential(Eh) of the mixture waste was a negative(-)value indicating an unfavorable condition for earthworm life, but the values of Eh were increased with the ripening time. The increase rate of Eh value was proportional to the mixture ratio of bulking agents, but the increase rate for saw dust was higher than that of the cow manure and the rice straw. The value of alkalinity was also changed into the favorable range for earthworm after 50 days except for 10% of the mixture ratio of the bulking agents. When the mixture ratios of the bulking agents were increased from 10% to 40%, the growth characteristics of earthworms were increased from 31.7% to 95% for the survival rate, 103% to 225% for the liveweight increase rate and 32% to 91% for hatching rate of the cocoons. It can be concluded that the proper content of the bulking agents in the leather sludge to ensure effective vermistabilization was over 30%, when the mixture was ripened during 50 days. The contents of heavy metals in the ripened sludge were lower than the other regulatory standards for compost.
