Direct membrane filtration (DMF) of wastewater has many advantages over conventional biological wastewater treatment processes. DMF is not only compact, but potentially energy efficient due to the lack of biological aeration. It also produces more biosolids that can be used to produce methane gas through anaerobic digestion. Most of ammoniacal nitrogen in wastewater is preserved in effluent and is used as fertilizer when effluent is recycled for irrigation. In this study, a technical feasibility of DMF was explored. Organic and nitrogen removal efficiencies were compared between DMF and membrane bioreactor (MBR). Despite the extremely high F/V ratio, e.g., $14.4kg\;COD/m^3/d$, DMF provided very high COD removal efficiencies at ~93%. Soluble microbial products (SMP) and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) were less in DMF sludge, but membrane fouling rate was far greater than in MBR. The diversity of microbial community in DMF appeared very narrow based on the morphological observation using optical microscope. On the contrary, highly diverse microbial community was observed in the MBR. Microorganisms tended to form jelly globs and attach on reactor wall in DMF. FT-IR study revealed that the biological globs were structurally supported by feather-like materials made of secondary amines. Confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) study showed microorganisms mainly resided on the external surface of microbial globs rather than the internal spaces.
The conventional activated sludge processes were operated as a combined organic substrate removal and nitrification. So, it was necessary to provide with oxygen for both carbon and ammonia removal. But, in the BNR processes, nitrification is separated from carbon removal that causes fast ammonia oxidation and reduced oxygen demands. And most of the substrate is utilized by denitrification organisms and phosphorus accumulating organisms. with these appearances, mathematical model for BNR processes different from IWA ASM can be simplified and applied. In this study, it was performed that the existing equations as McKinney model, nitrification model published by U.S. EPA and oxygen demands from stoichiometry and the relationship between NUR and OUR were applied to full-scale BNR processes and the results were compared with the measured. and it is possible to make out the optimum design parameter from those equations.
In this study, the performance of new digestion system (NDS) for the treatment of food waste leachate was evaluated. The food waste leachate was fed intermittently to an anaerobic reactor at increasing steps of 3.3 L/day (hydraulic retention time [HRT] = 30 day), 5 L/day (HRT = 20 day), and finally 10 L/day (HRT = 10 day). In the anaerobic reactor, the pH and alkalinity were maintained at 7.6 to 8.2 and 8,940-14,400 mg/L, respectively. Maximum methane yield determined to be 0.686L $CH_4$/g volatile solids (VS) containing HRT over 20 day. In the digester, 102,328 mg chemical oxygen demand (COD)/L was removed to produce 350 L/day (70% of the total) of biogas, but in the digested sludge reduction (DSR) unit, only 3,471 mg COD/L was removed with a biogas production of 158 L/day. Without adding any chemicals, 25% of total nitrogen (TN) and 31% of total phosphorus (TP) were removed after the DSR, while only 48% of TN and 32% of TP were removed in the nitrogen, phosphorus, and heavy metals (NPHM) removal unit. Total removal of TN was 73% and total removal of TP was 63%.
A rotating activated bacillus contactor (RABC) process with a series of aerobic reactors was tested in pilot scale to treat digested liquid from an anaerobic digester treating swine wastewater and sewage sludge. The influent (digested liquid) for the RABC process showed C/N ratios less than 2 as a typical feature of effluent from anaerobic digesters. The pilot process, which consists of three 3 RABC reactors, four aerobic tanks and a sedimentation tank, was operated for 210 days with a hydraulic retention time of 20 days without pH and temperature control. Since the Bacillus-enriched aerobic reactors shows high efficiencies of nitrogen removal at low DO levels less than 1.0 mg/L, they were operated at reduced aeration intensities. With relatively low concentrations of organics in comparison with nitrogen concentrations, the RABC process tested in this study showed stable and high nitrogen and organics removal efficiencies over 80%. The nitrogen removal process tested in this study was proven to be an effective and operation-cost saving (lower aeration) method to remove nitrogen without adding external carbon sources to meet the optimum C/N ratio.
This study was carried out to evaluate the performance of Modified Ludzsck Etinger (MLE) process with waste oyster shell media in aerobic tank. Influent flow was 36 L/d and the order of reactor was anoxic, aerobic and sedimentation tank and unit hydraulic retention time was 2 hr, 6 hr and 4 hr, respectively. Sludge recycling rate in sedimentation tank and internal recycling rate were 100%. Media fill rate in aerobic tank was 5%, 10% and 17% and fluid MLSS concentration in aerobic tank was 3000~4000 mg/L. Average TCOD removal rate was 91~93%, TBOD 92~96%, SS 95~96% and when media fill rate was 10% or more, in organic compound removal it could satisfy with wastewater discharge standard. Average total nitrogen removal rate was 70~76% and average total phosphorous removal rate was 58~65%. With media fill rate increasing, total phosphorous average removal rate also increased. For it was that released calcium ion from waste oyster shell reacted with soluble phosphorous. From these experiment results, the MLE process using waste oyster shell as media is a practical method for advanced sewage treatment in rural area.
Distillery wastewater was used in a thermophilic laboratory-scale two stage anaerobic digester to test the effects of the redox potential of the first acidogenic reactor on the performance of the system. The digester consisted of first a acidogenic reactor and the an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor. The digestor was operated at a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 48 h. Under these conditions, about 90% of the chemical oxygen demand as measured by the chromate method ($COD_{cr}$) was removed with a gas production yield of 0.4 l/g-COD removed. The redox potential of the acidogenic reactor was increased when the reactor was purged with nitrogen gas or agitation speed was increased. The increase in reduction potential was accompanied by an increase in acetate production and a decrease in butyrate formation. A similar trend was observed when a small amount of air was introduced into the acidogenic reactor. It is believed that the hydrogen partial pressure in the acidogenic reactor was decreased by the above mentioned treatments. The possible failure of anaerobic digestion processes due to over-loading could be avoided by the above mentioned treatments.
Biodegradability of cotton/polyester blend fabric was investigated employing activated sluge test, soil burial test and enzyme hydrolysis. Surface changes of the degraded sample were observed through a microscopy. Changes in X-ray diffraction patterns and crystallinity were examined using X-ray diffractometer. Experimental results revealed that biodegradability of cotton/polyester blend fabric was proportional to the blending ratio of cotton, not showing any synergy effect. Polyester 100% hardly degraded in this study. Through the comparison of the experimental method it was shown that the biodegradabilities determined from activated sludge test and enzymatic hydrolysis except soil burial test were linearly related to the blending ratio of cotton in the blent fabrics. It is probably because the biodegradability determined from the retention of tensile strength of fabrics buried in soil was affected by the stress distribution of polyesters throughout the fabric. From the microscopic observations it was revealed that fungi were grown on the fabric surface and the colors turned yellow, brown and black. X-ray diffraction patterns showed that the heights of crystalline peak coming from cotton part in blend fabrics decreased whereas those coming from polyester part increased comperatively as time passed by. Crystallinities of cotton 100% fabric increased slightly at the begining and then decreased continuously.
With the increasing concern on climate changes and energy shortage, anaerobic membrane bioreactors (AnMBR) become a promising alternative to aerobic processes for domestic wastewater treatment. Two major advantages of AnMBRs are energy production and sludge reduction. Recently, several different configurations of AnMBRs have been proved to produce high quality effluent at reasonable hydraulic retention time and ambient temperature. One of the major problems of the AnMBR is membrane fouling control, and some solutions are already suggested. Other problems to be solved before the full application of the AnMBR are recovery of dissolved methane, management of residual nutrients and sulfide. Considering the potential advantages and future technology development, AnMBR will become major domestic wastewater treatment process in near future.
Preparing for the Standards for Effluents which will be strengthen from 2012, many ways like remodellings and repairs of sewage treatment plant (STP) are considered. The treatment of the recycle water from the sludge treatment process contains high-strength organic compounds and nitrogen is considered as alternative. In the treatment of high-strength nitrogen, nitritation has more economic advantages than nitrification. In this study, lab-scale reactor was operated at the $35^{\circ}C$, $20^{\circ}C$ and $10^{\circ}C$ conditions using effluent of anaerobic digester to investigate the nitrogen removal by nitritation. Long-term stable nitritation was achieved at the $35^{\circ}C$, $20^{\circ}C$ but $10^{\circ}C$. In the stable nitritation states, nitrite conversion was higher at the high temperature of $35^{\circ}C$ than the room temperature of $20^{\circ}C$. Also shorter solid retention time (SRT) was needed to induce high nitrite conversion at the high temperature of $35^{\circ}C$. It was showed that temperature and SRT are important factors to induce nitritation.
