With the purpose of energy recovery from sludge having calorific value as fuel we investigated the current status and characteristics of sludge in Korea in order to understand the type and amount of sludge that can recover energy. 'The Status Report on Waste Generation and Treatment in Korea' announced that 152 million tons of wastes were generated nationwide in 2015 and 9.2 % of the whole waste disposed into landfills which includes 15.1 % of the total industrial wastes. The average of upper calorific values of sewage sludge was 3,021 kcal/kg and that of wastewater sludge was 2,472 kcal/kg respectively. In order to determine the sludge as fuel, each correlations between calorific value, carbon content and combustibility ratio were evaluated. In the study, the current status and characteristics of sludge in Korea were investigated in order to understand the type and amount of sludge as fuel to recover energy. It is predicted that if the energy of sludge having a calorific value of 6 MJ/kg($${\sim_=}1,500kcal/kg$$) or more is recovered as fuel, the amount of the sludge disposed into landfills can be reduced about 40 %.
As a basic research for developing a sludge application technique in forestry, this study was conducted to investigage a reasonable amount and period of sludge to be applied onto forest nursery of Acer palmatum Thunb. The paper mill sludge was used for the study, and ammonium nitrate was treated to some of them to reduce the C/N ratio lower than 40. The maximum amount of applied sludge was 7ton/ha/year, and they were spread on spring and on late summer. The sludge application did not stimulate early growth of the trees during a year. Since there was no significant changes in soil chemical properties, the amount of applied sludge was thought to be too little to result in a significant role for tree growth. However, the soil water showed significant increase of Cu when the activated sludges were applied during late summer. Thus, the time of application need to be determined cautiously with considering the risk of ground water contamination. In conclusion, if we set a goal from the view point of long-term concept such as forest productivity rather than to get a short-term product, the uncomposted sludge in small amount during growing season might be considered to be applied on forest nursery.

In this study, a series of experiment was carried to improve dewaterability of the sludge produced in a treatment plant, located in Hongcheon, Gangwondo, which has been treating municipal wastewater and livestock wastewater. Optimum sludge mixing ratio and the amount of sludge conditioner were determined. As sludge conditioners, alum and ferric salt were selected and tested. For the measurement of sludge dewaterability, capillary suction time(CST) and the specific resistance were measured, The specific resistance was detemined by running a series of Buchner Funnel Test. Mixing the two sludges at a 50:50 ratio with the addition of 20 mL alum gave the best results in terms of dewaterability. The moisture content decreased by 2% at this condition.
This pilot study evaluated fueling feasibility of sewage sludge, which contains a large amount of water content, by applying melting of thermoplastic polyethylene (PE). This study has identified a simultaneous achievement of drying and heating value improvement of the sewage sludge. The sewage sludge collected from a sewage sludge treatment plant during a winter period had a water content of 83.7 wt%, a combustible volatile content of 12.5 wt%, and an ash content of 3.8 wt%. The higher heating value (HHV) of the dried sewage sludge, before impregnation or coating of PE, was 4,600 kcal/kg. The collected sewage sludge was immersed into the melted PE solution, which had a HHV of 11,070 kcal/kg, and kept immersing with increasing reaction time. As the reaction (immersing or coating or impregnation) time increased, the water content of the sludge decreased. However, the HHV of the sludge increased with increasing the reaction time. The HHVs of the sewage sludge immersed or dipped into the melted PE solution for 15 min ranged from 6,780 to 8,170 kcal/kg with water content less than 7 wt%. This result indicates the melted PE solution can be utilized as an improvement technology for dryness and heating value of the sewage sludge with high water content. The sewage sludge impregnated or coated with melted PE can be utilized as potential fuel or energy resources.

The objective of this study is to develop effective and economical treatment processes for the removal of non-biodegradable organics by reusing the sludge generated from Fenton's Oxidation Process. It was found that about 50% of coagulants and 50% of catalyst can be reduced by reusing the sludge generated from Fenton's Oxidation Process. It was also found that the amount of sludge generation can be reduced in coagulation process and Fenton's Oxidation Process. From the results of bench-scale test, it was found that the average removal efficiency increased to 8.5% and the amount of sludge generation was reduced up to 35% by reusing the sludge as coagulant. The average organic removal efficiency increased to 5.3% and the amount of sludge generation was reduced up to 14% by reusing the sludge as catalyst in Fenton's Oxidation. It can be concluded that the reuse of sludge generated from Fenton's Oxidation Process would be reduced cost of chemical consumption and Fenton's sludge treatment.
This study was conducted to reduce excess sludge generation by recycling of return sludge to the aeration tank after solubilization by electric field charger and ultrasonifier. The return sludge was purposely broken-up to the ratio of $SCOD_{Cr}/TCOD_{Cr}$ at 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3, which was tested along with control (i.e., untreated). Solubilized sludge was subsequently treated in a bench-scaled conventional activated sludge reactor. According to varying $SCOD_{Cr}/TCOD_{Cr}$ ratios, TSS in the reactor was correspondingly increased from 129 to 219 mg/L and $TCOD_{Cr}$ was also from 257 to 335 mg/L. However, TSS in the effluent was nevertheless kept lower at below 30 mg/L and $TCOD_{Cr}$ was also unvaryingly below 40 mg/L. For $SCOD_{Cr}/TCOD_{Cr}$ = 0.3, the amount of excess sludge produced was at the highest decreased up to as high as 78%.
This study has cross checked the change of internal sludge-recycle in Anaerobic-Digestion, and researched about not only the improvement of Bio-gas production from the digested sludge but also the efficient method of sludge minimization. Ultimate object of the study is to reduce the amount of sludge by the improved efficiency of contact with the organic-matter and the microbes in Anaerobic-Digestion. The sludge-recycle fluidized sludge layer and raised the activity of the sludge, the optimal sludge-recycle ratio, VS and COD removal ratio were 1,000%, 28.2% and 27.7%, respectively. Through these results of this study, it may be of use to treat waste sludge by the sludge-recycle ratio in terms of minimization and circulation of resources.
Phosphate removal through adsorbent, such as activated alumina, powdered aluminum oxide, flyash, blasted furnace slag and other materials, is commonly and widely practiced. The purpose of this study was to improve the removal efficiency of phosphorus in waste sludge earned at seafood processing factories. To investigate the utility and the feasibility of this sludge disposal process, experiment was carried out with a batch process. As a result, phosphate removal appears to increase with increasing adsorbent does, but shows no changes at an adsorbent does over 5g/l. With increasing ratios of initial phosphate concentration to adsorbent does, the amount of removed phosphate is increased while phosphate removal(%) is decreased. Wasted sludge, treated with zinc chloride chemically, represented a better efficiency than the untreated activated sludge and zinc chloride itself, when they reacted with phosphate solution.

The feasibility study on paraffin binder as a solidifying agent of digested sewage sludge cake was peformed. The availability of paraffin binder as a solidifying agent was investigated by several tests. Based on the tests, it is ascertained that paraffin binder with a small amount of quicklime and fly ash enhances the solidification of digested sewage sludge cake. Paraffin binder shortened the drying time of digested sewage sludge cake and solidified sludge with paraffin was not dissolved in water again. Also, the unconfined compressive strength of solidified sludge with paraffin increases.
Isolation of pollutant-degrading bacteria is important in bioaugmentation, one of the methods for biological degradation of environmental contaminants. We focused on the magnetic activated sludge (MAS) process as a culture method that efficiently concentrates degrading bacteria, and cultured activated sludge with 1,4-dioxane as a model pollutant. After 860 days of operation, MLVSS, which indicates the amount of sludge, increased from 390 mg/L to 10,000 mg/L, and the removal rate of organic matter including 1,4-dioxane, tetrahydrofuran, and glucose in the artificial wastewater reached up to 97%. Based on these results, the MAS process was successfully used to acclimate activated sludge with 1,4-dioxane. Bacterial flora analysis in the MAS showed that bacteria of the genus Pseudonocardia, already reported as 1,4-dioxane degrading bacteria, play an important role in the degradation of this pollutant. The MAS process is a suitable culture method for acclimation of environmental pollutants, and the findings indicate that it can be used as an enrichment unit for pollutant-degrading bacteria.
