Recently, to improve the safety and maneuverability at fairway around harbor the POD system has been equipped on a ship. And the interest about maneuvering characteristics of a cruise ship has been increasing. In this paper the mathematical model of maneuvering motion of a cruise ship with twin POD system in general speed and slow speed are presented. And the maneuvering coefficients of mathematical model are obtained from the captive model tests using CPMC(Computerized Planar Motion Carriage). Computer simulation using mathematical model in general speed and slow speed are carried out and compared with the results of free running model test with the same model ship. The differences between the mathematical models are compared and discussed. In this paper the mathematical models, the results of captive model test and simulation results are presented.

The FPSO is moored by mooring lines to keep the position of it. The nonlinear motion analysis of the moored FPSO must be carried out in the initial design stage because sea environments affect motion of it. In this paper, the mathematical model is based on the slow motion maneuvering equations in the horizontal plane considering wave, current and wind forces. The direct integration method is employed to estimate wave loads. The current forces are calculated by using mathematical model of MMG. The turret mooring forces are quasi-statically evaluated by using the catenary equation. The coefficients of a model for wind forces are calculated from Isherwood's experimental data and the variation of wind speed is estimated by wind spectrum according to the guidelines of API-RP2A. The nonlinear motions of FPSO are simulated under external forces due to wave, current, wind including mooring forces in time domain.

Kinematic GPS provides quite good accuracy of position in cm level. Though K-GPS assures high precision measurement in cm level on the basis of an appreciable distance between a station and an observational point, but it has measurable distance restriction within 20 km from a reference station on land. So it is necessary to make out a simple and low-cost method to obtain accurate positioning information without distance restriction. In this paper, the velocity integration method to get the precise velocity information of ship is explained. Next two experimental results (Zig-zag maneuvering test and Williamson turn) as the ship's maneuvering test and also the experimental results of leaving and entering port as slow speed ship's movement were shown. In these experimental results, ship's course, speed and position are compared with those obtained by kinematic-GPS, velocity integration method and dead reckoning position using Gyro-compass and Doppler-log.

The anchor is laid on seabed and the main engine is worked to against incident environmental loads in typoon. As the main engine is broken down in the storm, the anchor chain is cutted and the vessel is drifted. Although a ship is moored by two point mooring lines to keep the her position, a ship is crashed into a rock because of typoon and the accident of oil spilling may be occured. In this paper, we studied the position-keeping of a ship which is analyized based on the slow motion maneuvering equations considering wave, current and wind. The direct integration method is employed to estimate wave loads. The current forces are calculated by using mathematical of MMG. The two point mooring forces are quasisatatically evaluated by using the catenary equation. The coefficeints of wind forces are modeled from Isherwood’s emperical data and the variation of wind speed is estimated by wind spectrum. The nonlinear motions of a two point moored ship are simulated considering wave, current, wind load in time domain.

Recently it is coming to be hish reality on visual system in ship-handling simulator depending on the technical development of 3D computer graphics. Even with high reality, it is possible that visual information presented seafarers through screen or display is not equivalent to the real world. In docking maneuvering, visual targets or obstructs are sighted close to ship's operator or within few hundred meters, so it might be possible to affect visual information such as the difference between both eyes' and single eye's visual sight. Because it is not possible to perceive of very slow ship's movement by visual in case of very large vessels, so the Doppler Docking SONAR and/or Docking Speed and Distance Measurement Equipment were developed and applied for safety docking maneuvering. By the way, the simulator training includes the ship's maneuvering training in docking, but in Ship-handling Simulator and also onboard, there are some limitations of perception of ship's movement with visual information. In this paper, perception of ship's movement with visual system in Ship-handling Simulator and competition of performances of visual systems that are conventional screen type with Fixed Eye-point system and Mission Simulator. We got some conclusions not only on the effectiveness for visual system but also on the human behavior in docking maneuver.

As offshore oil fields move towards the deep ocean, the oil production systems such as FPSO are being built these days. Generally, the FPSO is moored by turret mooring lines to keep the position of FPSO. In this paper the mathematical model is based on the slow motion maneuvering equations in the horizontal plane considering wave, current and wind forces. Some practical methods have already been proposed for predicting the characteristics of ship manoeuvring motions at relatively high advance speed. However, these methods can hardly be applied to motions of ships in starting, stoppint, backing and slow steaming conditions, even though such extensive motions are of vital importance from a safety point of view particularly in harbour areas. The method presented here aims at predicting the characteristics of ship manoeuvring at low advance speed, which covers starting, stopping, backing and slow steaming conditions. The force mathematical models at large angles of incidence to the hull as well as under the tilde range of propeller operations are formulated. Simulations of various manoeuvres at low advance speed are carried out for two types of merchant ship, i.e. a LNGC and a VLCC. Comparisons between simulations and corresponding full-scale measurements or free-running model tests provide a first verification of the proposed mathematical models.
Everyday about 90% of cargos are delivered by ships, and thousands of vessels enter and depart the international container harbors such as Shanghai, Singapore, Hong Kong, Busan, Rotterdam, etc. Maneuvering at harbor is known as the most sophisticated and difficult procedure, because the effectiveness of actuators during low speed berthing is reduced. In this paper, a new berthing method is discussed. Tugboats are combined with damper systems to ensure safe berthing. A mathematical model describing the interaction between unactuated ship, tugboats and damper systems is presented. An optimal controller is designed to maneuver the ship without oscillation and overshoot. MCL (Marine Cybernetics Lab) model ship is used to evaluate the efficiency of the proposed approach through MatLab simulation.

As the number of offshore structure is glowing in deep waters, there have been increased damages of it. These floating structures in offshore locations exposed to harsh environmental conditions. In recent years, there has been a slowing attention around damages on bow and deck on FPSO caused by waves in steep storm condition. This paper describes a study of the water on deck due to the dynamic behavior of a FPSO with turret mooring system. The nonlinear motions of the FPSO are simulated under external forces due to wave, current, wind, and mooring forces in the time domain. The direct integration method is employed to estimate low frequency drift wave forces. The current forces are calculated by using slow motion maneuvering equations in the horizontal plane. The coefficients of a model for wind forces are calculated from Isherwood's experimental data and the variation of wind speed is estimated by wind spectrum according to the guidelines of API-RP2A.
