  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of auditory cues in the form of a metronome on gait initiation (GI) in Parkinson's disease (PD). 2 patients (mean age: 54 yrs) with idiopathic PD participated in the study. All patients (Hoehn and Yahr disability score of 2.0) were tested in the "on" state approximately 1.5 hours following the administration and fully responding to their PD medications. Subjects first initiated walking at self-initiated speeds to determine their cadences. Then, subjects were asked to initiate gait along the walkway while keeping pace with a metronome. The metronome rate (in beats/min) was set at a cadence 85% (slow condition), 100% (normal condition) and 115% (fast condition) of gait for each subject. Subjects were able to increase the speed of GI with faster cadence, but the speed of GI for the slow condition was similar to that of the normal condition. Swing toe-off was 578.3 ms for the fast condition, 709.4 ms for the normal condition and 736.2 ms for the slow condition. Respective times for swing heel-strike were 894.3 ms, 1110.2 ms and 1119.1 ms, and stance toe-off were 1105.4 ms, 1338.5 ms, and 1343.1 ms. Except for stance unloading ground reaction forces were greatest for the fast condition and smallest for the slow condition. It appears that PD patients were able to modulate GRFs and temporal events in response to auditory cues to achieve the peak acceleration force of the swing and stance limb. The findings from this study provided preliminary data, which could be used to investigate how PD patients modulate GRFs and temporal events during GI in response to tasks.

  • In fly ash-lime system the effects of reaction condition amounts of gypsum and cement and CaO/SiO2 ratio on the hydrates by hydrothermal reaction were investigated. The tobermorite phases were not observed in hy-drothermal reaction of fly ash lime because of the hydrate rate was very slow. The compressive strength and the hydration rate increased with increasing the amount of gypusm and cement and the optimum amounts of gypsumo and cement were 5wt and 20wt% respectively. The specimen which CaO/SiO2 ratio is 0.85 was shown the maximum compressive strength and the tobermorite phase within reaction time 2 hours.

  • In this study, the reaction at UBM(Under Bump Metallurgy) and solder interface was investigated. The UBM employed in conventional optical packages, Au/Pt/Ti layer, were found to dissolve into molten Au-Sn eutectic solder during reflow soldering. Therefore, the reaction with different diffusion barrier layer such as Fe, Co, Ni were investigated to replace the conventional Pt layer. The reaction behavior was investigated by reflowing the solder on the pad of the metals defined by Cr layer for 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 minutes at $330^{\circ}C$. Among the metals, Co was found to be most suitable for the diffusion barrier layer as the wettability with the solder was reasonable and the reaction rate of intermetallic formation at the interface is relatively slow.

  • Gallium oxyhydroxide (GaOOH) powders were heat-treated in a flowing ammonia gas to form GaN, and the reaction kinetics of the oxide to nitride was quantitatively determined by X-ray diffraction analysis. GaOOH turned into intermediate mixed phases of $\alpha-\;and\;\beta-Ga_2O_3$, and then single phase of GaN. The reaction time for full conversion $(t_c)$ decreased as the temperature increased. There were two-types of rapid reaction processes with the reaction temperature in the initial stage of nitridation at below $t_c$, and a relatively slow processes followed over $t_c$ does not depends on temperatures. The nitridation process was found to be limited by the rate of an interfacial reaction with the reaction order n value of 1 at $800^{\circ}C$ and by the diffusion-limited reaction with the n of 2 at above $1000^{\circ}C$, respectively, at below $t_c$. The activation energy for the reaction was calculated to be 1.84 eV in the temperature of below $830^{\circ}C$, and decreased to 0.38 eV above $830^{\circ}C$. From the comparative analysis of data, it strongly suggest the rate-controlling step changed from chemical reaction to mass transport above $830^{\circ}C$.

  • Chlorine bulk decay tests were carried out by bottle test under controlled conditions in a laboratory. Experiments were performed at different temperatures: $5^{\circ}C$, $15^{\circ}C$, $25^{\circ}C$, and the water temperatures when samples were taken from the effluent just before entering to its distribution system. 38 bulk tests were performed for water of Al (water treatment plant), 4 bulk tests for A2 (large service reservoir), and A3(pumping station). Residual chlorine concentrations in the amber bottles were measured over time till about 100 hours and bulk decay coefficients were evaluated by assuming first-order, parallel first-order, second-order. and $n^{th}-order$ reaction. The $n^{th}-order$ coefficients were obtained using Fourth-order Runge-Kutta Method. A good-fit by the average coefficient of determination ($R^2$) was first-order ($R^2=0.90$) < parallel first-order ($R^2{_{fast}}=0.92$, $R^2{_{slow}}=0.95$) < second-order ($R^2=0.95$) < $n^{th}-order$ ($R^2=0.99$). But if fast reaction of parallel first-order bulk decay were applied to the effluent of large service reservoir with ca. 20 hours of travel time and slow reaction in the water distribution system following the first 20 hours, parallel first-order bulk decay would be best and easy for application of water quality modeling technique.

  • This paper deals with the reaction-bonded silicon nitride I terms of its microstructural development during nitrida-tion. Silicon powder compacts were reacted with nitrogen at 1185$^{\circ}C$ and 13$65^{\circ}C$ according to the nitriding schedule. Microstructures of nitrided specimens were examined by means of optical and scanning electron microscope to discuss the nitridation or microstructural development at initial and intermediat stage of nitridation. Reaction products were also analysed by X-ray diffraction method at each stage of nitridation. The results indicate that ho-mogeneous and uniform microstructure with find porosity can be obtained only under the reaction condition. such as slow and relatively constant reaction rate with time.

  • Tylenchulus semipenetrans is an important and widespread plant-parasitic nematode of citrus worldwide and can cause citrus slow decline disease leading to significant reduction in tree growth and yield. Rapid and accurate detection of T. semipenetrans in soil is important for the disease forecasting and management. In this study, a loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay was developed to detect T. semipenetrans using DNA extracted from soil. A set of five primers was designed from the internal transcribed spacer region (ITS1) of rDNA, and was highly specific to T. semipenetrans. The LAMP reaction was performed at $63^{\circ}C$ for 60 min. The LAMP product was visualized directly in one reaction tube by adding SYBR Green I. The detection limit of the LAMP assay was $10^{-2}J2/0.5g$ of soil, which was 10 times more sensitive than conventional PCR ($10^{-1}J2/0.5g$ of soil). Examination of 24 field soil samples revealed that the LAMP assay was applicable to a range of soils infested naturally with T. semipenetrans, and the total assay time was less than 2.5 h. These results indicated that the developed LAMP assay is a simple, rapid, sensitive, specific and accurate technique for detection of T. semipenetrans in field soil, and contributes to the effective management of citrus slow decline disease.

  • For development of slow releaseing K-fertilizer using natural zeolite, two kinds of K adsorbed zeolite were made by ion exchange reaction in $K^+$ saturated aqueous solution. K-Zeolite was prepared by removing the excess salt after K adsorption on zeolite, however, NW. K-Zeolite was prepared only by K adsorption reaction without removing the excess salt. The adsorbed K on zeolite was not easily released, but continuously and slowly released from the surface of zeolite. By the results of application for tobacco cultivation, the K contents in soil treated with K-Zeolite and NW. K-Zeolite were lower than that of control (20kg/10a) at the early growth stage, but were higher at the late growth stage. Therefore, the results suggest that K adsorbed zeolite could be applied as a slow-releasing K fertilizer.

  • We have obtained the results of Cannizzaro reaction of furfural, 5-methylfurfural and 5-bromofurfural by using alcoholic potassium hydroxide solution in 95% (V/V) methanol solvent at $0{\sim}40^{\circ}C$. The results are as follows: 1) Their Cannizzaro reaction is fourth-order reaction, and the reaction of furfural proceeds 3 times as rapid as that of 5-methylfurfural and 10 times as slow as that of 5-bromofurfural. 2) Their activation energies of furfural, 5-methylfurfural and 5-bromofurfural in the reaction are 10.46Kcal/mole, 16.27Kcal/mole, and 9.62Kcal/mole respectively, and the calculated activation parameters, and ${\Delta}S^{\neq}$, increase in the order of 5-bromofurfural, furfural and 5-methyl-furfural.
