  • Shear walls have high stiffness and strength; however, they lack energy dissipation and repairability. In this study, an innovative slotted shear wall featuring vertical slots and steel energy dissipation connectors was developed. The ductility and energy dissipation of the shear wall were improved, while sufficient bearing capacity and structural stiffness were retained. Furthermore, the slotted shear wall does not support vertical forces, and thus it does not have to be arranged continuously along the height of the structure, leading to a much free arrangement of the shear wall. A frame-slotted shear wall structure that combines the conventional frame structure and the innovative shear wall was developed. To investigate the ductility and hysteretic behavior of the slotted shear wall, finite element models of two walls with different steel connectors were built, and pushover and quasi-static analyses were conducted. Numerical analysis results indicated that the deformability and energy dissipation were guaranteed only if the steel connectors yielded before plastic hinges in the wall limbs were formed. Finally, a modified D-value method was proposed to estimate the bearing capacity and stiffness of the slotted shear wall. In this method, the wall limbs are analogous to columns and the connectors are analogous to beams. Results obtained from the modified D-value method were compared with those obtained from the finite element analysis. It was found that the internal force and stiffness estimated with the modified D-value method agreed well with those obtained from the finite element analysis.

  • The effect of base cavities on the drag of a simplified tractor-trailor model for Re=4.1*10$^{5}$ is investigated experimentally. Three different types of base cavities are studied in this work. They are solid-wall, slitted-wall, and slotted-wall cavities. Slotted-wall cavity is found to be most effective for drag reduction. A maximum of 11% reduction in the zero-yaw drag coefficient is achieved with the slotted wall cavity.

  • The eigenfunction expansion method is appled for the wave scattering by a vertical slotted, where both the inertial and quadratic drag terms are involved. Quadratic drag term representing the energy loss is linearized by the application of socalled equivalent linearization. The drag coefficient, which was empirically determined by Yoon et al.(2006) and Huang(2007) is used. Analytical results are verified by comparison to the experimental results conducted by Kwon et al.(2014) and Zhu and Chwang(2001). Using the developed design tool, the effect of energy loss by a vertical slotted wall is estimated with various design parameters, such as porosity, submergence depth, shape of slits and wave characteristics. It is found that the maximum value of energy loss across the slotted wall is generated at porosity value less than P = 0.1. The present solutions can provide a good predictive tools to estimate the wave absorbing efficiency by a slotted-wall breakwater.

  • Based on the eigenfunction expansion method, the interaction between monochromatic waves and a partially immersed slotted plate with a back wall has been investigated. Analytical results show that the reflection coefficients by a partially immersed slotted plate depend on the porosity, immersed depth, chamber width, incidence angle and wave frequency. It is found that the reflection coefficient has minimum value within entire frequency range when the porosity has optimal value 0.1. Comparison between the analytical results and the experimental results(Zhu,2001) of reflection coefficients is made for various chamber widths, immersed depths and wave periods with good agreement. The present analytic method can account adequately for energy dissipation caused by flow separation behind a slotted plate and provide the design informations for the construction of slit caisson breakwater.

  • Post-wall waveguide structures have attracted a great deal of attention for micro- and millimeter-wave applications. One of the waveguide’s applications is a slotted waveguide array. In order to design the slotted array, the characteristics of a slot unit alone on the post-wall waveguide should be investigated. In this paper, a method for extracting the S-parameters of a unit slot is proposed. This simple method requires only two kinds of waveguides: waveguides without a slot unit and waveguides with a slot unit. Three kinds of slot units are fabricated, and the extracted results show a high level of agreement with predicted (simulated) results. With this method, the equivalent slot length can also be found.

  • This paper describes the characteristics of a one dimensional narrow-wall slotted waveguide array with a single-layer linear-to-circular polarization converter consisting of a dipole array. An external boundary value Problem of one slot and three dipoles, which approximates the mutual coupling between the dipole array and an edge slot extending over three faces of a rectangular waveguide, is formulated and analyzed by the method of moments; design of polarization conversion is conducted for this model as a unit element. If every unit element has perfect circular polarization, grating lobes appear in the array pattern due to the alternating slot angle: these are suppressed in this paper by changing the dipole angle and degrading the axial ratio of the unit element. The validity of the design is confirmed by the measurements. The dipole array has negligible effects upon slot impedance; the polarization conversion for existing narrow-wall slotted arrays is realized by add-on dipole array.

  • This paper presents design for radiation element of slotted waveguide by the method of moment. The piecewise sinusoidal function as the basis function is used for the Moment Method. From the analytically results based on the Galerkin's moment method, frequency characteristics and radiation power is investigated for the design parameter such as the slot length, offset and angle. This paper also discusses that the radiation power is controled by the slot offset and angle. The thickness of the waveguide wall is also discusses in the analysis.

  • Periodically perforated slot structure in the upper wall of the parallel plate waveguide is analyzed with main interest focusing on the diffraction Properties. The Periodic slot array is of infinite extent in one direction and of finite extent in the other direction. Various numerical results for reflection from the slotted section and transmission beyond the slotted section, and the radiation through the slotted section into the upper half space are presented with the height of feeding parallel plate waveguide, single slot size, and the periodicity between slots as parameters. This study is thought to be helpful to the design of the ventilation hole in the TFT-LCD and PDP.
