  • When the liquid tanks only partially filled and under translational acceleration, large quantities of liquid move uncontrollably inside the tanks and generate the liquid sloshing effect. Liquid sloshing effect could be a severe problem in launch vehicle stability and control if the liquid modes of motion couple significantly with the launch vehicle's normal modes of motion. Several methods have been employed to reduce the effect of sloshing, such as introducing baffles inside the tanks or dividing a large tank into a number of smaller ones. These techniques, although helpful in some cases, do not succeed in canceling the sloshing effects. In this paper, An attitude controller is designed for a launch vehicle with liquid sloshing effect. Both PD controller and sloshing filter are designed for the objective. PD gains and design parameters are determined by optimal algorithm. The performance of the attitude controller is evaluated via computer simulations.

  • Recently in the design of fuel tanks(launch vehicle, ship, automobile) which transport a large amount of liquid in the cargo holds, the structural damage due to liquid-sloshing becomes an important problem. The impact pressure from sloshing is most violent when the liquid motion of a partially filled tank is in resonance with the motion of a system. In this paper, the sloshing natural periods in liquid tanks are estimated for partially filled tanks with various geometries. In addition to, controlled for a launch vehicle with liquid sloshing effect by PD controller and sloshing filter The PD gain and sloshing filter parameter arc determined by optimal algorithm.

  • This study is constructed to investigate the sloshing effect on the motions of a two-dimensional rectangular cylinder experimentally and numerically. The modes of motion under consideration are sway and roll, and also experimental cases are divided by two categories; 1-DoF roll motion and 2-DoF motion (Coupling sway and roll). It is found that the sway response is considerably affected by the motion of the fluid, particularly near the sloshing natural frequency, while the roll response changes comparatively small. The dominant mode of motion is analyzed for 2-DoF experiments as well. The measured data for 1-DoF motions is compared with numerical results obtained by the Multi-modal approach. The numerical schemes vary in detail with the number of dominant sloshing modes; i.e. there is a single dominant mode for the Single-dominant method, while the Model 2 method assumes that the first two modes are superior. For the roll motion, numerical results obtained by the two different methods are relatively in good agreement with the experiments, and these two results are similar in most wave frequency range. However, the discrepancies are apparent where the fluid motion is not governed by a single mode. But both of numerical methods over-predict the motion at the vicinity of the sloshing natural frequency. In order to correct the discrepancy, the modal damping needs to be investigated more precisely. Furthermore, another multi-modal approach, such as the Boussinesq-type method, seems to be required in the region of the intermediate liquid.

  • The Floating storage and re-gasification unit (FSRU), which has large cargo storage tanks, is a floating liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal. The sloshing motion in tanks that are partially filled with LNG can cause impact pressure on the containment system and affect the global motion of the FSRU. Therefore, the accurate prediction of sloshing motion has been a significant issue in the offshore gas production industry. In this paper, a particle method based on the moving particle semi-implicit (MPS) method proposed by Koshizuka and Oka (1996) has been modified to predict sloshing motion accurately in a rectangular tank with the filling ratio of water. The simulation results, including the violent sloshing of the fluid, were validated by comparison with the original MPS method.

  • Many engineering issues are caused because of sloshing phenomena. Numerical solution methods including the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technique, are used to analyze these sloshing problems. In this study, a numerical technique was used to analyze sloshing impact loads in a prismatic tank under forced horizontal motion. The volume-of-fraction (VOF) method was adopted to model the sloshing flow. Six cases were used to compare the effects of the natural frequencies of a simple rectangular and prismatic tank, with impact pressure on the prismatic tank wall. This study also investigated the variable pressure loads and sloshing phenomena in prismatic tanks when the frequencies were changed. The results showed that the average of the peak pressure value for ${\omega}^{\prime}1=4.24=4.24$ was 22% higher than that of ${\omega}_1=4.6$.

  • The present study describes a numerical analysis for simulation of the sloshing of flows with free-surface which contained in a rectangular tank The SOLA-VOF (Volume of fluid) method uses a fixed mesh for calculating the motion of flow and the free-surface. This Eulerian approach enables the VOF method to use only a small amount of computer memory for simulating sloshing problems with complicated free-surface contours. The VOF function, representing the volume fraction of a cell occupied by the fluid, is calculated for each cells, which gives the locating of the free-surface filling any some fraction of cells with fluid. Using SOLA-VOF method, the study describes visualization about simulation of the sloshing of flows and damping effect by baffle. Translation and pitching motion of the forms have been investigated The time-dependent changes of free-surface height are used for visualization subject to several conditions such as fluid height horizontal acceleration, sinusoidal motion, and viscosity. The free-surface heights were used for comparing wall-force, which is caused by sloshing of flows. Baffle was Installed to reduce the force on the wall by sloshing of flows. Damping effects was extensively expressed under the conditions such as baffle shape and position.

  • In the present study, a numerical analysis on the sloshing in a tank with the harmonic motion was investigated. A VOF method was used for two-phase flows inside the sloshing tank and a source term of the momentum equation was applied for the harmonic motion. This numerical method was verified by comparing its results with the available experimental data. The sloshing in a tank causes the instability of the fluid flows and the fluctuation of the impact pressure on the tank. By these phenomena of the tank sloshing, the sloshing problems such as the failure and the noise of system can be generated. For the reduction of these sloshing problems, the various baffles such as the horizontal/vertical plate baffles and the porous baffles inside the tank are installed. With the installations of these baffles, the characteristics of the liquid behavior in the sloshing tank, the impact pressure on the wall, the amplitude of the free surface near the wall and the sloshing noise were numerically analyzed.

  • The two-dimensional sloshing problem in a rigid rectangular tank with a free surface is considered. The flow is generated by a container in harmonic motion in time along the horizontal axis, i.e., a container excited by u=Asin($2{\pi}ft$) where u denotes the container velocity imposed externally, A is the amplitude of the oscillation velocity, and f is the frequency of oscillation. Experimental apparatus is arranged to investigate the large-amplitude sloshing flows in off-resonant conditions, where the large amplitude means that A~O(1), and the distance, S, is comparable to the breadth, L, of the container, i.e., L/S~O(1). Comprehensive particle image velocimetry (PIV) data are obtained, which show that the flow physics of the nonlinear off-resonant sloshing problem can be characterized into three peculiar free surface motions: standing-wave motions similar to those of linear sloshing, a run-up phenomenon along the vertical sidewall at the moment of turn-over of the container, and gradually propagating bore motion from the sidewall to the interior fluid region, like a hydraulic jump.

  • The interaction between a sloshing liquid damper (SLD) tank and a rectangular pontoon was investigated under the assumption of the linear potential theory. The eigenfunction expansion method was used not only for the sloshing problem in the SLD tank but also for analyzing the motion responses of a rectangular pontoon in waves. If the frictional damping due to the viscosity of the SLD tank was ignored, the effect of the SLD appeared to be an added mass in the coupled equation of motion. The installation of the SLD tank had a greater effect on the roll motion response than the sway and heave motion of the pontoon. One resonance peak for rolling motion showed up in the case of a frozen liquid in the SLD tank. However, if liquid motion in the SLD tank was allowed, two peaks appeared around the first natural frequency of the fluid in the SLD tank. In particular, the peak value located in the low-frequency region had a relatively large value, and the peak frequency located in the high-frequency region moved into the high-frequency region as the depth of the liquid in the tank increased.

  • The natural sloshing frequencies of annular cylindrical TLD are parametrically investigated by experiment, aiming at the exploration of its successful use for suppressing the structural vibration of spar-type floating wind turbine subject to multidirectional wind, wave and current excitations. Five prototypes of annular cylindrical TLD are defined according to the inner and outer radii of acryl container, and eight different liquid fill heights are experimented for each TLD prototype. The apparent masses near the first and second natural sloshing frequencies are parametrically investigated by measuring the apparent mass of interior liquid sloshing to the acceleration excitation. It is observed from the parametric experiments that the first natural sloshing frequency shows the remarkable change with respect to the liquid fill height for each TLD model with different container dimensions. On the other hand, the second natural sloshing frequency is not sensitive to the liquid fill height but to the gap size, for all the TLD models, convincing that the annular cylindrical sloshing damper can effectively suppress the wave- and wind-induced tilting motion of the spar-type floating wind turbine.
