  • A problem on the sloshing flow of highly-viscous fluid in a rectangular box was revisited by both of theoretical approach and experimental visualization method. Based on the theoretical prediction that a linear shape of free surface is prevailing in bulk zone, it has been studied an analogy between a near wall coating flow in sloshing problem and dip coating flow in Landau-Levich problem. Phenomenological observation confirms that, in the case of highly-viscous fluid, I.e., Re ≪ 1, viscous dominant near-wall flow in sloshing problem is identical to dip coating flow generated by drag-out of the plate being in both motion of vertical translation and horizontal rotation.

  • The sloshing tank causes the instability of the fluid flows and the fluctuation of the impact pressure by the liquid on the tank. These flow characteristics inside the sloshing tank can generate the uncomfortable sloshing noise. In the present study, a numerical analysis for the reduction of a fuel tank sloshing noise was performed. To simulate the flow characteristics in a sloshing tank with partially filled liquid, a VOF method was used for interfacial flows by applying a momentum source term for the sloshing motion in a non-inertial reference frame. This numerical method was verified by comparing its results with the available experimental data. For the reduction of the sloshing noise, the horizontal and vertical baffles and porous media inside a sloshing tank were considered and numerically analyzed in the present study. For various installations of these baffles and porous media, the characteristics of the liquid behavior in the sloshing tank were obtained along with the impact pressure on the wall and the height of the free surface along the wall. These basic results can be used for the design of the actual vehicular fuel tank with the reduced sloshing noise.

  • A study on the sloshing flow of highly-viscous fluid in a rectangular box was made by both of theoretical approach and experimental visualization method. Assuming a smallness of external forcing to oscillate the container, it was investigated a linear sloshing flow of highly-viscous fluid utilizing asymptotic analysis by Taylor-series expansion as a small parameter Re (≪1) in which Re denotes Reynolds number. The theory predict that, during all cycles of sloshing, a linear shape of free surface will prevail in a bulk zone and it has confirmed in experiment. The relevance of perfect slip boundary condition, adopted in theoretical approach, to the bulk zone flow at the container wall was tested in experiment. It is found that quasi-steady coated thin film, which makes a lubricant layer between bulk flow and solid wall, is generated on the wall and the film makes a role to perfect slip boundary condition.

  • Impact pressure due to sloshing is of great concern for the ship owners, designers and builders of the LNG carriers regarding the safety of LNG containment system and hull structure. Sloshing of LNG in partially filled tank has been an active area of research with numerous experimental and numerical investigations over the past decade. In order to accurately predict the sloshing impact load, a new numerical method was developed for accurate resolution of violent sloshing flow inside a three-dimensional LNG tank including wave breaking, jet formation, gas entrapping and liquid-gas interaction. The sloshing flow inside a membrane-type LNG tank is simulated numerically using the Finite-Analytic Navier-Stokes (FANS) method. The governing equations for two-phase air and water flows are formulated in curvilinear coordinate system and discretized using the finite-analytic method on a non-staggered grid. Simulations were performed for LNG tank in transverse and longitudinal motions including horizontal, vertical, and rotational motions. The predicted impact pressures were compared with the corresponding experimental data. The validation results clearly illustrate the capability of the present two-phase FANS method for accurate prediction of impact pressure in sloshing LNG tank including violent free surface motion, three-dimensional instability and air trapping effects.

  • In the present study, a three-dimensional least square/level set based two-phase flow code was developed for the simulation of three-dimensional sloshing problems using finite element discretization. The present method can be utilized for the analysis of a free surface flow problem in a complex geometry due to the feature of FEM. Since the finite element method is employed for the spatial discretization of governing equations, an unstructured mesh can be naturally adopted for the level set simulation of a free surface flow without an additional load for the code development except that solution methods of the hyperbolic type redistancing and advection equations of the level set function should be devised in order to give a bounded solution on the unstructured mesh. From the numerical experiments of the present study, it is shown that the proposed method is both robust and accurate for the simulation of three-dimensional sloshing problems.

  • The motions and drift forces of side-by-side moored FSRU and LNGC including the sloshing effect, were studied using experiments. The FSRU and LNGC contained LNG cargo tanks and the LNG sloshing could affect the motions and drift forces of the structures due to its coupling with floating body motion. The effect of coupling can vary with the LNG filling level, and the effect of the filling level was investigated. The coupling effect was stronger at lower filling level. It was confirmed that longitudinal sloshing influenced the surge and surge mean drift force in head sea. In addition, gap flow affected the sway and mean drift forces. Sloshing attenuated the sway and yaw excited by gap flow in side-by-side configuration.

  • A numerical code is developed based on potential flow theory to investigate nonlinear sloshing in rectangular Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) tanks under forced excitation. Using this code, internal free-surface elevation and sloshing loads on liquid tanks can be obtained both in time domain and frequency domain. In the mathematical model, acceleration potential is solved in the calculation of pressure on tanks and the artificial damping model is adopted to account for energy dissipation during sloshing. The Boundary Element Method (BEM) is used to solve boundary value problems of both velocity potential and acceleration potential. Numerical calculation results are compared with published results to determine the efficiency and accuracy of the numerical code. Sloshing properties in partially filled rectangular and membrane tank under translational and rotational excitations are investigated. It is found that sloshing under horizontal and rotational excitations share similar properties. The first resonant mode and excitation frequency are the dominant response frequencies. Resonant sloshing will be excited when vertical excitation lies in the instability region. For liquid tank under rotational excitation, sloshing responses including amplitude and phase are sensitive to the location of the center of rotation. Moreover, experimental tests were conducted to analyze viscous effects on sloshing and to validate the feasibility of artificial damping models. The results show that the artificial damping model with modifying wall boundary conditions has better applicability in simulating sloshing under different fill levels and excitations.

  • This paper is concerned with the analytical derivation of natural sloshing frequencies of liquid in annular cylindrical tank and its verification by experiment. The whole liquid domain is divided into three simple sub-regions, and the region-wise linearized velocity potentials are derived by the separation of variables. Two sets of matrix equations for solving the natural sloshing frequencies are derived by enforcing the boundary conditions and the continuity conditions at the interfaces between sub-regions. In addition, the natural sloshing frequencies are measured by experiment and the numerical accuracy of the proposed analytical method is verified through the comparison between the analytical and experimental results. It is confirmed that the present analytical method provides the fundamental sloshing frequencies which are in an excellent agreement with the experiment. As well, the effects of the tank radial gap, the bottom flow gap and the liquid fill height on the fundamental sloshing frequency are parametrically investigated.

  • In this paper, we intend to introduce a nonlinear finite element method based on the fully nonlinear potential flow theory in order to simulate the large amplitude sloshing flow in two-dimensional baffled tank subject to horizontally forced excitation. The free surface is tracked by a direct time differentiation scheme with the four-step predictor-corrector time integration method. The flow velocity is accurately recovered from the velocity potential by second-order least square method. In order to maintain the finite element mesh regularity and total mass, the semi-Lagrangian surface tracking method with area conservation is applied. According to the numerical formulae, we perform the parametric experiments by varying the installation height and the opening width of baffles, in order to examine the effects of baffle on the nonlinear liquid sloshing. From the numerical results, the hydrodynamic characteristics of the large amplitude sloshing are investigated.
