A Study on Enclosed Mast Characteristics for Radar Cross-Section Reduction (레이더반사면적 감소를 위한 폐위형 마스트 특성 연구)

  • Radar Cross Section (RCS) is a factor directly related to survivability, and a design to reduce the presence of this factor is needed. The upper structure, guns, radar and so on are related to warship RCS, but radar RCS reduction is difficult because of complex shapes involved. In this paper, an enclosed mast, which is one modern method for reducing radar RCS, and the characteristics of an applied Frequency Selected Surface (FSS) are analyzed. The RCS reduction ability of an enclosed mast has been confirmed by comparing RCS analysis results for a general radar with that of an enclosed mast for available frequency according to FSS shape. The characteristics of the enclosed mast have also been studied by analyzing the elevation angle and slope of the mast. General radar RCS was high because of its complex shape, but low RCS was shown for the enclosed mast model, which had a simpler shape.

  • When constructing LNG storage structures using the cast-in-place method in extreme areas, the construction cost and time may be increased due to the poor working environments and conditions. Therefore, demand for modular energy storage tanks is increasing. In this study, we propose using an SCP module as an alternative for lighter-weight LNG storage tanks. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of LNG storage outer tanks by performing bending tests on the thickness of composite steel plate concrete under field conditions. The loads on specimens with thicknesses of 100 mm and 200 mm were linearly increased to the design final loads of 413 kN and 822 kN, respectively. The slope was rapidly changed, and fracture occurred. The two test conditions showed linear behavior until the steel plate yielded, and after an extreme load behavior, sudden yielding of the steel plate yield occurred in the SCP bending test according to the INCA guidelines. The results satisfied the design flexural load and showed the possibility of using the specimens in a modular LNG outer tank. However, it is necessary to evaluate the structural performance of the SCP by performing compression and shear tests in future research.

Comparison Analysis of the Road Environment between Urban and Suburban Area for Connected and Automated Driving(CAD) Mobility Services (교통소외지역 자율주행 모빌리티 서비스를 위한 도로 환경 분석 : 대구광역시와 세종특별자치시를 중심으로)

  • The introduction of Connected and Automated(CAD) technology has a growing interests especially in areas with low demand for transport, where often the local transport services do not connect to peripheral areas for more efficient and convenient mobility services. However, there are few researches on CAD-based mobility services in areas with low demand for transport. Because current researches are mainly focuses on introduction of CAD-based mobility services in area with high demand for transport such as urban and highway. These two areas have different road environments and these differences require different driving technology especially related to Operational Design Domain(ODD). ODD is important factors for introduction of CAD-based mobility services. Therefore, we compare the road environments of areas with low demand for transport and areas with high demand for transport in terms of ODD. In addition, this paper proposes suggest guidance for the introduction of CAD-based mobility services in areas with low demand for transport such as rural and suburban areas.

A Study on the Stability of Slopes Reinforced with Panel-Type Retaining Walls (대절토부 사면의 패널식 옹벽보강에 따른 안정성 검토)

  • Various innovative technologies and methods are being applied to ensure the stability of steep rock slopes. However, there are design limitations concerning site ground conditions, leading to discrepancies between the designed and actual ground conditions during construction. In the case of the retaining wall in Yeosu, where the study area is located, although the construction of a 5-stage retaining wall is planned, at the current completion of the second stage, cracks on the upper part of the wall, settlement in the front of the wall, and seepage have been observed. After the completion of stages one and two, issues regarding cracks and settlement on the upper part of the wall and seepage in the front of the wall were discovered. Thus, there was a need to reevaluate the results of the existing stability assessment. It was confirmed that the issue was due to groundwater leakage, attributed to the lack of clear assessment of the colluvial soil layer during the initial design stage. Therefore, to conservatively reflect groundwater level conditions, a groundwater level contour was positioned at the top of the wall to conduct a slope stability assessment. The assessment results indicated that the safety factor during the rainy season exceeded the required value of 1.3, with a calculated safety factor of 1.31. However, during seismic events, the safety factor was determined to be 1.12, falling short of the required safety factor of 1.3. Therefore, it is suggested that the existing retaining walls constructed during stages one and two undergo reinforcement using methods such as micro-piles with grouting, and additional work should be carried out to ensure a clear assessment of the colluvial soil layer.

Investigation of Fatigue Strength and Prediction of Remaining Life in the Butt Welds Containing Penetration Defects (블완전용입 맞대기 용접재의 용입깊이에 따른 피로강도특성 및 잔류수명의 산출)

  • In this paper fatigue strength reduction of butt weld with penetration defect, which can be seen frequently in the steel bridge, was assessed quantitatively. S-N curves were derived and investigated through the constant amplitude fatigue test of fully or partially penetrated welded specimen made of SWS490 steel. The fracture mechanical method was applied in order to calculate the remaining fatigue life of the partially penetrated butt welds. The fatigue limit of the fully penetrated butt welds was higher than that of category A in AASHTO's fatigue design curves, and the slope of S-N curves with 5.57 was stiffer than that of other result for welded part generally accepted as 3. The fatigue strength of the partially Penetrated butt weld was strongly influenced by the size of lack of penetration, D. It decreased drastically with increasing D from 3.9 to 14.7mm. Fracture behaviour of the partially penetrated butt weld is able to be explained obviously from the beach mark test that a semi-elliptical surface crack with small a/c ratio initiates at a internal weld root and propagates through the weld metal. To estimate the fatigue life of the partially penetrated butt weld with fracture mechanics, stress intensity factors K of 3-dimensional semi-elliptical crack were calculated by appling finite elements method and fracture mechanics parameters such as C and m were derived through the fatigue test of CT-specimen. As a result, the fatigue lives obtained by using the fracture mechanical method agreed well with the experimental results. The results were applied to Sung-Su bridge collapsed due to penetration defects in butt weld of vertical member.

Design on Slopes Revegetation and Tentative Instruction on Construction Work (비탈면 녹화 설계 및 시공 잠정 지침)

  • In Korea, there has been no revegetation applicable standard for slopes formed by road construction work up to now, so revegetation work has been done using mostly foreign varieties in the manner of early revegetation. However, foreign varieties have some shortcomings; for example, they tend to be dried to death after construction work. Besides, due to the rift in the supporting soil, these revegetated varieties are often displaced from the slopes. Thus, the Ministry of Construction & Transportation on July, 2005 established revegetation standard on the slopes suited for the natural eco-system of Korea and organized positively recommending directions for using self-sewn plants growing near the slopes in overall consideration of soil, weather, regional conditions. The locations specified in this direction are the slopes at the road construction jobsite like the expressway, highways, and local roads. In addition, the Ministry's standard and directions stipulated that damaged slopes's natural environment and eco-system due to various road construction work should be restored, and thus a feeling of stability and pleasantness should be provided to road users as well. Also, the Ministry tried to select seed plants and revegetation measures suited for surrounding environment to put the environment-friendly slope revegetation measures into practice through the test revegetation work in order to prevent illegal construction practices and to improve the quality of revegetation. According to the direction, revegetation districts aimed at the slopes are divided into three ones in consideration of weather environment, regional environment, and forest environment as follows : national territory's core ecological green-land based district centering on the Taebaek Mountains; coastal ecosystem district including islands off the coast; inland eco-system district. The combination of revegetation plants according to environment revegetation districts, should be executed by dividing into herb-oriented type, woody plant colony type, and bio-species versatility restoration type, and the selection of seeding plants should be done in the presence of a supervisor and through test construction results and technology counseling from a specialist in natural eco-system restoration and revegetation measure seed combination standard according to environment revegetation districts. This direction will be executed in the manner of monitoring until the yea 2008 and 2009 it will be finalized and enforced on December, 2009.

A Study on the Channel Planform Change Using Aerial Photographs and Topographic Map in the Mangyoung River (영상자료를 이용한 만경강 하도변화에 관한 연구)

  • River is able to change by various environmental factors. In order to conduct river restoration design, it is necessary to evaluate the stable channel through the analysis of past and present river channels. River evaluation requires various data, such as geometry, hydraulic and hydrology, but there is a lot of difficulty to understand topographical information of river change on time and space due to a lack of past data by domestic conditions. This study was analyzed abandoned channel formation, changes in the vertical-section and cross-section length of rivers, and micro-landform changes etc using an image analysis technique. Purpose of this research is to evaluates the stable channel through a river channel morphology change from past and present river channels image. Mangyoung river was conducted artificial river maintenance through straight channel consolidation form 1920 to 1930 year. In the result river maintenance, mangyoung river length was decreased by 15 km and abandoned channels of six points were made. Since then, weir was continuously increased to control bed slope and use water. Install of weir was to be the reason of changes on channel width, thalweg, vegetated bar, sand bar, water area. Present Mangyoung river show that water area was temporary increased in upper and middle reach because of weir installation. Total sand bar was only decreased in upper channel. The change of vegetated bar and sand bar was slight recently. In this result, Mangyoung river is inferred to reach stabilized channel although there is some difference to the lower reach.

The Study on Improvement Methods for The Seismic Performance of Port Structures (항만 구조물의 내진성능 향상을 위한 배면 지반의 보강방안에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, the four types of improvement methods (increase self weight and reducing sliding force etc.) were proposed depending on install location with compaction grouting to improve seismic performance of existing port structure and optimal methods by analyzing the effects of improvement (stability, constructability and economy) by theoretical and numerical methods. From the dynamic time history analysis for artificial seismic waves, the results indicated that the horizontal displacement after improvement decreased compared to before improvement, however the displacement reduction effect among improvement methods was not significantly different. Slope stability based on the strength reduction method and the limit equilibrium analysis method, it is confirmed that the passive pile method is more safe than other methods. It is due to the shear strength at the failure surface is increased. In addition, the analysis of constructability and economy showed that the reduction of earth pressure method (type 02) and the passive pile method (type 03) are excellent. However, in the case of the passive pile method is concerned that there is a shortage of design cases and the efficiency can be reduced depend on various constraints such as ground conditions.

A Study on Land Acquisition Priority for Establishing Riparian Buffer Zones in Korea (수변녹지 조성을 위한 토지매수 우선순위 산정 방안 연구)

  • The Korean government has purchased land properties alongside any significant water bodies before setting up the buffers to secure water qualities. Since the annual budgets are limited, however, there has always been the issue of which land parcels ought to be given the priority. Therefore, this study aims to develop efficient mechanism for land acquisition priorities in stream corridors that would ultimately be vegetated for riparian buffer zones. The criteria of land acquisition priority were driven through literary review along with experts' advice. The relative weights of their value and priorities for each criterion were computed using the Analytical Hierarchy Process(AHP) method. Major findings of the study are as follows: 1. The decision-making structural model for land acquisition priority focuses mainly on the reduction of non-point source pollutants(NSPs). This fact is highly associated with natural and physical conditions and land use types of surrounding areas. The criteria were classified into two categories-NSPs runoff areas and potential NSPs runoff areas. 2. Land acquisition priority weights derived for NSPs runoff areas and potential NSPs runoff areas were 0.862 and 0.138, respectively. This implicates that much higher priority should be given to the land parcels with NSPs runoff areas. 3. Weights and priorities of sub-criteria suggested from this study include: proximity to the streams(0.460), land cover(0.189), soil permeability(0.117), topographical slope(0.096), proximity to the roads(0.058), land-use types(0.036), visibility to the streams(0.032), and the land price(0.012). This order of importance suggests, as one can expect, that it is better to purchase land parcels that are adjacent to the streams. 4. A standard scoring system including the criteria and weights for land acquisition priority was developed which would likely to allow expedited decision making and easy quantification for priority evaluation due to the utilization of measurable spatial data. Further studies focusing on both point and non-point pollutants and GIS-based spatial analysis and mapping of land acquisition priority are needed.

A Case Study on Deformation Behaviors of CFRD with Water Level Change (수위변화에 따른 CFRD의 변형거동 사례분석)

  • This paper analyzes the displacements of CFRD which was completed by field measurement. It is to understand the deformation behavior of the dam body according to the water level change from the impounding time. And it was compared with numerical analysis results. As a result of measuring the behavior of the dam crest and downstream slope according to impounding, horizontal displacements in axis direction of the dam, upstream and downstream displacements and settlements occurred mostly when the water level reaches about half of the dam height. The displacements continued until the water level reached its maximum. After that, it showed a constant convergence regardless of the water level. Horizontal displacements of the face slab which is the most important in CFRD were similar at all locations. The Horizontal displacements of the face slab showed the trends of increasing in winter and decreasing in summer due to the effect of the outside temperature before impounding. Also, the displacements increased until the water level reached about half of the dam height. After that, they decreased with rising in water level. As a result, the face slab behaviors according to seasonal change after impounding as well as water level condition. It is judged because of the material characteristics of the concrete slab. Numerical analysis showed slightly different maximum settlement and depth of occurrence from the measuring data after construction of the dam. It is considered that this is due to various design and construction differences such as the estimation of input parameters in analysis, construction period, and the layer thickness of construction. For the overall period of the dam, the settlements were mostly completed during the construction period and some settlements occurred in the early days of impounding and then converged.
