A PIV system consisting of an image board slit into personal computer and 2-D sheet light projector is developed and related techniques to improve its performance are discussed. A grey-level cross correlation method capable of overcoming particle seeding limitation is suggested. And a sub-pixed interpolation method in determining the vector terminal is preposed by considering 8-neighbours correlation distributing patterns. Furthermore, pressure estimation from the acquired velocity vectors by applying the Poisson equation is persented with reasonable feasibility. As a practical application of the present system, evaporator flows are analysed and attained instantaneous velocity vectors reveal that the flow phenomena maintain turbulent fluctuation.
Rectangular microstrip antenna with parasitic element is analyzed. Radiation admittance and equivalent circuit parameters between rectangular microstrip antenna and parasitic element are obtained by using equivalent ${\pi}$-network parameters of the slit in the wall of the parallel plate waveguide filled with homogeneous dielectric. The return loss is calculated and measured as a function of frequency with gap width 0.5mm between the patch and parasitic element. The experimental results are in fairly agreement with calculated values.

The non-uniform leaky wave structure of the slits in a parallel-plate waveguide is analyzed from the viewpoints of transmitting(receiving) leaky wave antenna and grating coupler. Period and slit width are simultaneously varied along the leaky wave structure to construct the leaky wave structure with a specific distribution of complex propagation constant. Some results for the equivalent magnetic current distributions over the slits and the radiation characteristics of the leaky wave structure with various source(equivalent magnetic current) distributions such as Gaussian, uniform, cosine, cosine-squared, and Taylor distributions are given and compared with each other.

A two-stage slit type virtual impactor based on the concept of the single stage virtual impactor has been designed, fabricated, and evaluated for the purpose of concentrating the suspended particles in the air with the size range of 1.8-4.5 .mu.m and handling large flow volume. Monodisperse methylene blue particles have been generated with vibrating orifice aerosol generator (VOAG). The separation efficiency and concentration efficiency have been measured by the UV-visible absorption spectrometry. Previous study for a single stage virtual impactor were used to determine the design parameters such as 50% cut-off sizes and dimensions of the two stage virtual impactor. The separation efficiency curve and 50% cut-off Stokes number(cut-off sizes) are not sensitive to the nozzle Reynolds number, but sensitive to the ratio between the minor flow rate and the total flow rate, The measured concentration efficiency was compared with the maximum concentration efficiency determined by the separation efficiencies of the first and the second stages. The differences between the measured and the maximum concentration efficiencies result from the wall loss due to the deposited particles on the internal walls inside the impactor.
The corrosion of metals and alloys in flowing liquids can be classified into uniform corrosion and localized corrosion which may be categorized as follows. (1) Localized corrosion of the erosion-corrosion type: the protective oxide layer is assumed to be removed from the metal surface by shear stress or turbulence of the fluid flow. A macro-cell may be defined as a situation in which the bare surface is the macro-anode and the other surface covered with the oxide layer is the macro-cathode. (2) Localized corrosion of the differential flow-velocity corrosion type: at a location of lower fluid velocity, a thin and coarse oxide layer with poor protective qualities may be produced because of an insufficient supply of oxygen. A macro-cell may be defined as a situation in which this surface is the macro-anode and the other surface covered with a dense and stable oxide layer is the macro-cathode. (3) Localized corrosion of the active/passive-cell type: on a metal surface a macro-cell may be defined as a situation in which a part of it is in a passivation state and another in an active dissolution state. This situation may arise from differences in temperature as well as in the supply of the dissolved oxygen. Compared to uniform corrosion, localized corrosion tends to involve a higher wall thinning rate (corrosion rate) due to the macro-cell current as well as to the ratio of the surface area of the macro-anode to that of the macro-cathode, which may be rationalized using potential vs. current density diagrams. The three types of localized corrosion described above can be reproduced in a Jet-in-slit test by changing the flow direction of the test liquid and arranging environmental conditions in an appropriate manner.
Compression, lateral, and opposite woods in the stem and branch of rimu (Dacrydium cupressinum Lamb.), a softwood species indigenous to New Zealand, were described and compared in the anatomical aspects. Qualitatively, growth rings were wide in the compression wood, intermediate in the lateral wood, and narrow in the opposite wood. Tracheid transition from early wood to late wood was very gradual in the compression wood but was more abrupt in both the lateral and opposite woods. When viewed transversely, compression wood tracheids showed a roundish outline except at the growth ring boundary but lateral and opposite wood tracheids were angular to rectangular in outline. Intercellular spaces were occasionally detected in the compression wood except in the late wood at the growth ring boundary but were absent from both the lateral and opposite woods. Slit-like extensions of the bordered pit openings caused by the location of pit apertures within short and narrow helical grooves were observed in the compression wood tracheids but not in the opposite or lateral wood tracheids. In the compression wood tracheids, fine striations in the form of fine checks or grooves were observed on the lumen surfaces and the innermost $S_3$ layer of secondary wall was absent. In the tracheids of lateral and opposite woods, the $S_3$ layer was sometimes absent but occasionally highly developed. Cross-field pits in the compression wood appeared to be piceoid due to slit-like pit apertures but those in the lateral and opposite wood tracheids showed cupressoid to taxodioid. Quantitatively, compression wood tracheids were somewhat shorter than those of opposite or lateral wood in stem but not different from the opposite or lateral wood tracheids in branch. The walls were thicker in the compression wood than in the lateral or opposite wood. Uniseriate rays in the compression wood were fewer than in the lateral or opposite wood.
The extended analysis on the diverging flow through asymmetric membrane pores has been performed in this study. Afore rigorous equations of velocity profile relevant to the divergent slit and cone shaped channels, which are widely used as a general pore model, have been obtained by employing a creeping flow approach of Newtonian fluids. As a degree of asymmetry (i.e., diverging angle) is increased, the predicted flow function shifts Toward the center region due to the incorporated wall effect, so that the overall velocity profile becomes decreased. It is true, as expected, that when the divergent channel is in the low diverging angle limit, the channel flow results in the Poiseuillean fashion by utilizing a lubrication approximation. The flow rate equation of each type of channel has been developed from the combined solution of velocity profile and pressure fields. The effect of diverging flow on the flow rate enhancement has been remarkably predicted, in which the flow rate increases with the increase of pore asymmetry. The advantage of our theoretical results lies in the analytical expression for the diverging flow behavior through pore channels as well as its ability to play a fundamental role on the related membrane filtrations such as microfiltration and ultrafiltration.

In this study, we proposed a new-type of circular perforated caisson breakwater consisting of a bundle of latticed blocks that can be applied to a small port such as a fishing port, and numerically investigated the hydraulic characteristics of the breakwater. The numerical method used in this study is OLAFOAM which newly added wave generation module, porous media analysis module and reflected wave control module based on OpenFOAM that is open source CFD software published under the GPL license. To investigate the applicability of OLAFOAM, the variations of wave pressure acting on the three-dimensional slit caisson were compared to the previous experimental results under the regular wave conditions, and then the performance for irregular waves was examined from the reproducibility of the target irregular waves and frequency spectrum analysis. As a result, a series of numerical simulations for the new-type of circular perforated caisson breakwaters, which is similar to slit caisson breakwater, was carried out under the irregular wave actions. The hydraulic characteristics of the breakwater such as wave overtopping, reflection, and wave pressure distribution were carefully investigated respect to the significant wave height and period, the wave chamber width, and the interconnectivity between them. The numerical results revealed that the wave pressure acting on the new-type of circular perforated caisson breakwaters was considerably smaller than the result of the impermeable vertical wall computed by the Goda equation. Also, the reflection of the new-type caisson breakwater was similar to the variation range of the reflection coefficient of the existing slit caisson breakwater.

We developed two kinds of the microchip for application to electrophoresis based on both glass and quartz employing the MEMS fabrications. The poly-Si layer deposited onto the bonding interface apart from channel regions can play a role as the optical slit cutting off the stray light in order to concentrate the UV ray, from which it is possible to improve the signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio of the detection on a chip. In the glass chip, the deposited poly-Si layer had an important function of the etch mask and provided the bonding surface properly enabling the anodic bonding. The glass wafer including more impurities than quartz one results in the higher surface roughness of the channel wall, which affects subsequently on the microflow behavior of the sample solutions. In order to solve this problem, we prepared here the mixed etchant consisting HF and $NH_4F$ solutions, by which the surface roughness was reduced. Both the shape and the dimension of each channel were observed, and the electroosmotic flow velocities were measured as 0.5 mm/s for quartz and 0.36 mm/s for glass channel by implementing the microchip electrophoresis. Applying the optical slit with poly-Si layer provides that the S/N ratio of the peak is increased as ca. 2 times for quartz chip and ca. 3 times for glass chip. The maximum UV absorbance is also enhanced with ca. 1.6 and 1.7 times, respectively.
The hindered diffusion in confined spaces is an important phenomenon to understand in a micro-scale the filtration mechanism determined by the particle motion in membrane pores. Compared to the case of spherical colloids, both the theoretical investigations and the experiments on the hindered diffusion of polyelectrolytes is actually more difficult, due to lots of relevant parameters resulting from the complicated conformational properties of the polyelectrolyte chain. We have successfully performed the Brownian dynamics simulations upon a single polyeiectrolyte confined in a slit-like pore, where a coarse-grained bead-spring model incorporated with Debye-Huckel interaction is properly adopted. For the given sizes of both the polyelectrolyte and the pore width, the hindered diffusion coefficient decreases as the solution ionic concentration decreases. It is evident that a charge effect of the pore wall enhances the hindered diffusion of polyelectrolyte. Simulation results allow us to make sense of the diffusive transport through the micro-pore, which is restricted by the influences of the steric hindrance of polyelectrolytes as well as the electrostatic repulsion between the polyelectrolytes and pore wall.
